    I’m 69 years old now and Johnny with Rodney was hilarious every time. I miss these guys. The best. RIP!

      I was flying Lear Jet charters in the early 1980's and I flew Rodney Dangerfield and his family twice. One flight was from the east coast to Illinois and the second time we flew him to Las Angeles.

      I know what you mean, but when you ask many women what they like best in a man, and they say, sense of humor, but then you ask them what profession he should have, stand-up comic, doesn't even show in the top fifty.

      Disagree. Comedy is not “a great profession”. Laughter comes from genuine shared perspective on humanity. And it’s much harder than milking lurid instinctive survival-related emotions like Greek tragedy or Hamlet, or Wicked or Les Miserables or law and order SVU. Comedy is much harder to pull off than tragedy. and at least equally great

    There will never be anything this good again... I remember watching Carson in the 70s and 80s with my grandmother late at night... It was the best times ever... Now it's a sad memory...

      I grew up watching Jonny. A class act. He allows celebrities to be themselves and for that he got the most out of them. Every time I hear the theme music the 70’s child in me smiles.

      I really miss Johnny's show. He had some GREAT guests of the time. Remember Karnack the Magnificent I believe it was.
      Sure Don't get that high level of comedy now from late night TV.

      Eddie Murphy says he worked a club as a kid where Rodney was working and he and Rodney used urinals that stood right next to each other. Neither spoke a word. Years later they both worked a different club and the same situation occurred. As Rodney was zipping up he turned to Eddie, shrugged his shoulders and said, "Who knew?"

      Great comedian , but judging on some recent blooper/behind the scenes videos , not such a pleasant human being. Kicking down at people who he judged to be replacable ( bartender in a sketch etc. )

    In 1989, I saw Rodney when he was touring the country. He did a 90 min set that was, to this day, one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. There were about 3K-5K of us in the audience, and all of us were in pain by the end of the show. He absolutely killed that night. And it was all 1-liners, which makes it even more incredible.

      Saw him at Caesars Palace Las Vegas back in 1985. I'm still laughing my ass off. One of the funniest shows I have ever seen to this day.

      Remember when the show was 90 minutes, and he would have more serious guests, such as scientists, authors, etc? Also had some great magicians on, always one of Johnny's many interests.

      What made Johnny so great was he would sit back and let his guests shine and he was the greatest set-up man ever whether it was a word, question or simply the tone of his voice, he would lead his guests, especially Rodney and Robin Williams, right where they wanted to go.

    Today's late shows are pitiful. Jimmy Fallon is a laughing fool..Jimmy Kimmel is not funny at all and too political. Steve Colbert is a legend in his own mind. We all miss you Johnny. I'm sure he's making God laugh.

    When I lived in Vegas on Eastern and Russell, Redd Foxx was my neighbor across the street and became a friend. I also got to see Rodney's last live show at the Tropicana and talked with him after briefly.He had no issue with chatting with folks and was a nice man, as was Redd. 🙏🙏

    Rodney had me laughing so hard, it brought tears to my eyes. The tears are also from the wonderful talent of Johnny Carson. It’s just amazing what a class act he really was. Super talented! I’m grateful I got to grow up in this era. The late night of today is horrendous. I wouldn’t give any of the current late night hosts a minute of my time. RIP Johnny.

      I SO agree with this. Fallon is the worst with his over exaggerated laughter. I'm 64 and watched Johnny when I was a kid. Amazing how Rodney just had all those jokes ready to go. He was wonderful.

    All the times I've seen Rodney this is probably one of his best sets ever! Saw him live at the sunrise theater in fort Lauderdale and My stomach and face hurt from laughing for 4 days after that! it's dangerous seeing him live because he doesn't give you time to catch your breath between one joke and another and it's just a constant one long laugh until it's almost like a dry heave! Rodney was beautiful...

      when he's doing his shtick he's got this constant sort of agitated body motion going - one begins to even wonder if he was ever in a relaxed state - because he'd just keep that up constantly when doing his jokes such that it just comes off as his "normal" state of being

    One of the funniest things Rodney ever said was just before he passed when he said if the heart surgery he was about have was successful he would be out of the hospital in a couple of days but if it wasn't successful he would be out in a couple of hours. He always caught you off guard with his humor. RIP Johnny and Rodney...

      Jay Leno said that when Rodney had his debilitating stroke and was in the hospital he went to visit him and Rodneys wife told Jay "He can't respond but he can hear you and he knows you're here... let him hold your finger". So Jay put his finger in Rodneys hand and Rodney squeezed it....
      It was then that Jay leaned in and whispered "Rodney... that's not my finger..."
      He said you could see Rodney visibly shaking he was laughing so hard inside.
      Funny men are funny men... right to the end.

    I was 13 when Johnny retired, and I cried through his farewell episode. I cried just now, when I went to look up what year that was (1992). I wasn't a lazy kid, and spent most of the daytime hours outside. Having had a deeper admiration for a person I never met, than with most of those with whom I've interacted, I can't overstate the tremendously endearing power of humor.
    I miss Johnny and Rodney.

      I think his best joke is the one about him saying that he and his wife only smoke after sex. Then he adds that he has the same pack now since 1975 but what bothers him is that his wife is up to 3 packs a day. That brought down the house.

      I think in terms of stand up comedy, he was the funniest, the best. People usually ascribe the GOAT to Richard Pryor, and he was great, but no one was as funny as Rodney. And yup, he still doesn't get no respect.

    The skill that it takes to be this on-point is remarkable! Unreal how ready he was for JC, which was the biggest show at night. Great to see him so on point and JC so quiet.

    When I was in my early 20's, I played the album No respect (flip side "Son of No Respect) over and over. I memorized the jokes and have used them at parties for over 50 years. People never tire of Rodney's one liners. Thanks for the countless laughs!

      @@241sail6 I agree but they did opposite versions; Rickels made fun of others, Rodney made fun of himself. They were so good and iconic that I wonder what a modern comedian with that gift would have to do to not be accused of stealing. Jimmy Carr is the closest, but I think is just like the Beatles for professional comedians.

    In my opinion Rodney D. is one of the original kings of comedy. His standup was top notch and his movies were hilarious as well. Unmatched talent and timing with that never ending condescending tone makes him one of the undisputed greats. Really miss this guy. He gets mountains of respect from me!!!

    He didn't curse or tell jokes at the expense of others by name. Either self-effacing, or his family without naming them. I am pretty sure his family was ok with him referencing them as he did. His ability to catalog and recall hundreds if not thousands of jokes is pure genius and a gift.

That's exactly the joke, he presents himself as a self-pitying, sad, pathetic, loser with embarrassing health problems, and who makes terrible choices. That's the character of Rodney Dangerfield, a bad person who blames everybody else for his problems. That's what makes him funny.

    Rodney did so much to help up and coming comedians. He gave a chance to Jerry Seinfeld, Rosanne Barr, Louie Anderson, Andrew Dice Clay and soooooo many more the list is endless. Not only was he a comedic genius in the telling of jokes but finding those who are also comedians too.

    My wife and I saw Rodney a the MGM in Vegas 2001. It was non stop jokes one after another. Then he’d stop, and you’d hear a little voice cue (his wife) and off he’d go again. He was the classic one liner.

    It's incredible that these titans of entertainment are gone...it seems like just yesterday we were watching these guys and laughing our asses off. It always slayed me when Rodney was on his stand-up roll you could hear Johnny guffawing just as loud as the audience. Rodney was one of a kind...always performing non-stop...

    Carson played straight man to only three guests that I know of - Rodney, Don Rickles and Joan Rivers. Their brand of ribald comedy will never be seen on talk show TV again.

    The legend. You can see how Johnny really was cracking up. I remember being a boy and sneaking out of my bedroom and turning the TV on quietly in our living room to watch Rodney on The Tonight Show on school night. My laughter would wake my mom up and she would tell me to go to bed. The same would happen when Don Rickels was on.
