The little tribute to Pryor at the top was classy of Johnny. Richard would end up making his first television appearance since the accident on Johnny Carson that September.
At the end of the day, no matter what the Country might be going through, Johnny would put it in perspective, find some gentle humor in the situation and help you to sleep in a better mood.A Class Act all the way.

The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid were two great collaborations of Carl and Steve, and key to getting Martin going in movies (nice Johnny mentioned Richard Pryor's accident).
My all time favorite comedian is Steve Martin. He does it all. Sings, dances, composes musicals, writes novels, plays the banjo - amazingly good. No one can hold a candle to his physical comedy like he did in All of Me with Lily Tomlin. I've been a fan since the first time i saw him.
i was born in 2006, and i’ve been watching a few of johnny’s videos, and oh my goodness, times back then seemed so much better. Johnny seemed like the perfect guy for late night, he wasn’t an over the top loud mouth like these guys we have today, he was a calm respectful interviewer who threw a joke in here and there and was actually funny, Live on Johnny!❤️🙏🕊
Who is the "over the top loudmouth" on talk shows today? I grew up in the 80's and loved Carson and Letterman. But this weird cherry-picked nostalgia is just so strange to me. Pick out a handful of pop culture things you like, and then declare unilaterally that "times were so much better back then." Just weird.
Genius doesn't seem hyperbolic. Miss & love(d) those guys! Steve Martin is one of the GREATS! Amazing that he still offers up this very day, over 43 yrs. later. Lot of fun, that episode. Also nice of Mr. Carson to mention in a heart felt matter Mr. Prior.

43 years ago! Unbelievable! 😮😳🤦🏻♂️ I laughed more in this 19 minutes than I have over the past 20 years at all the current late night shows combined! And you can throw Saturday Night Live into the mix as well! “Entertainment” is awful today! 🙄
I Got to thinking the other day............. it seemed like Johnny was on the Tonight show forever, I was a kid when he started the tonight show in 1962. I grew up, married, had kids and entering mid life when he retired in 1992. It hit me, we are in 2023 and Johnny retired one year longer now than he was on the show. Wow, time is passing fast!
You say that with zero context. Until the last 10 years, it was a lot easier to be non-partisan. The Right has become such a clown car of lies and anti-American ideals, it's kinda hard to treat them equally when telling jokes. And as a comedian, you go where the jokes are. And the vast majority of the jokes are on the Right. In the 80's, things were very, very different.
The bit about making up swear words is funny and made me remember a scene from I Remember Mama when Oscar Homolka taught his nephew Norwegian "swear words" to use when he felt pain.
Could you find the Carl Reiner appearance where he tells the story about going out to get ice cream late at night in his pajamas? It's a classic. Thank You.
Whoever Carson was privately, he was an amazing public persona and so talented, so classy and yet so generous. You always gotta wonder as a person who grew up with him around, how much he influenced personalities.
Carson had no equals. His secret wasn't a secret at all. He was just being Johnny, the most likeable host in television history. His comments about Richard Pryor are a perfect example of his humanity and a real concern for others. There is not a single moment in the entirety of the Tonight Show (while he was host) that was contrived. He was as real as it gets and for Hollywood that is damn near impossible to do.
AI says: The humor in this statement is derived from the surprising and somewhat absurd fact that humans and bananas share a significant amount of genetic material. The punchline, “which accounts for only 1% of the total DNA,” adds another layer of absurdity by implying that the vast majority of our DNA is still unaccounted for. It’s a form of humor that plays on our expectations and the incongruities of life.
My expectation is that I am incongruous in regard to understanding any of that. Or is that inkangaroous? (I wonder how much DNA humans, bananas and kangaroos all share.)
@@mas5867 Who is "Al?" Man I'm sorry to say this joke is WAY over my head. Learning, here, that humans and bananas share a significant amount of DNA coding is surprising to me, yes, but I don't find it absurd nor funny. I knew that plants grow and reproduce according to a specific plan, so although I could not have told you that plants have DNA, now that I know, I find that logical, not absurd, and if they have DNA I would expect their DNA and ours to work somewhat the same, so I just don't find that absurd, nor funny. Maybe slightly amusing. The punchline is not explicit enough to be understood by a lay person like me. It would need clarification along the lines of what you have provided. The "total DNA" is unclear. To what does that refer? The total DNA of a human? the total DNA of a banana? The combined sum of DNA between humans and bananas? The total DNA in the universe? It's unclear and that makes for an unfunny joke. Thank you for the clarification, and maybe now I understand what is meant, but it's a weak joke that isn't even funny. I'm guessing it's some standard joke passed around amongst people that like to talk about such things.
Those who own the archive of the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" would show the re-runs at the same times as those current host of those late night shows now, I am willing to bet the re-runs of Johnny Carson would make all of them look shameful and very unfunny.
There is nothing in popular media today that can match two old friends casually chatting about random topics. The late night shows mostly parody themselves and seem stuck in 2017. They're shiny and glossy on the surface, but just below that . . . there's more surface and little substance. Somebody needs to dig deeper and could learn from watching Dick Cavett, Steve Allen, Johnny, Letterman often, Jimmy K at his best, and Tom Snyder on radio or tv for lessons in how to talk to people and entertain an audience. Carson was the best of the best because he was and is so much better than all the rest.
