    This has to be the funniest letterman routine from a chair on Carson that I have ever seen! It is non stop! He never runs out of material. Thanks!

    Loved these two together! Johnny Carson and David Letterman were the reason I watched late night television. Nothing worth watching anymore. Sheer comic genius!

    Out of all of Letterman's appearances on the Tonight Show, this is the funniest he'd ever been. The Lincoln sketch was awesome!

    Iconic moment. The master and his apprentice. People always credit Dave with the idea of deconstructing late night tv. But Carson actually started it. Dave *brilliantly* debuilt over it. Think of all the skits and routines that Carson did that just didn't work. That was on purpose. He was a true master and genius.

    It is a therapy, a damn good therapy!!!! (Even for me who back then was taking my first steps into the English language but loved to watch them, particularly Johnny Carson). Unforgettable comedians!

    These old clips are such a treasure trove of fun. Was only a teen when this aired, and didn't watch every night. But thanks to YT, it's a lot of fun to watch these clips today and google the people and events humorously covered. Great nostalgia. Thanks for the upload!

    This brought back some memories for me, staying up to watch both Carson and Letterman in Middle School
    The respect and friendship between these two was always on display when Dave & Johnny got together.

    I remember the Lincoln hat malfunction and Johnny's explanation. It was one of the few times they ever had to stop-down that show instead of running everything in real time.

    I never got to watch Carson but it's amazing how versatile he was. Characters, singing, dancing, magic... Letterman and Leno couldn't do much of those. Fallon is the closest. He can't do magic but he's a better mimic.

      Her name is Julie Budd. A cabaret singer. Used to open a lot for Frank Sinatra at the end of his career.

      When Johnny visited Late Night the day he announced his retirement, Dave did a version of the same joke. Johnny asked what happened to the house, Dave said “earthquake got it,” and Johnny said “I’ve been through three of those earthquakes.” So you can guess what happened to the house.

      @Long Dave hadn’t bought the Malibu home when he and Michelle divorced. He lost it after he and Merrill broke up.
      There are videos of the house, with Dave living there, from 1979, 1981, 1986 (the truck) and early 1988 (Merrill’s Cinemax special, “Guide to Glamorous Living”).

    I am so glad that I was born when I was and lived through the heyday of both these gentlemen. No one today can touch them. Late night tv is not anecdotes and neutral jokes anymore, it's all cheap political shots injected with the host's (leftist) bias, excessive fake laughter, and "guess what's inside these mystery boxes". None of it is funny. The last good late night guy was Craig Ferguson. I would even put Paar and Steve Allen well above any of the four on today (Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Meyers).

      Letterman didn't get The Tonight Show because Leno kissed ass and screwed people over to get it. He did it twice with Conan almost 20 years later.
