One of the best NES games i ever played. Not exactly a port, but a totally different version, inspired by the arcade version, or maybe the contrary, I can't tell.
@Andoc That's my opinion, too. Although the arcade game has much better graphics and sound, somehow the NES version is better. I just can't tell why, but that's it. Anyway, the arcade version is good, too. And I don't know about you, but I didn't like the final stage: The "Aliens" stage. It killed the game's fantasy ambience.
the thing is, a lot of games from the decades after both Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) tried to capture some of the Alien/Geiger success by portraying various Xenomorph like creatures. Contra, Metroid and MANY MANY more...
Yeah, that level just felt bizarre. I could understand a Xenomorph-inspired level showing up in a game like Contra, but it feels darn weird to going from skeletons and cyclops and dragons to suddenly aliens! XD
One of my friends in high school was traumatized because he used an invincibility code on the NES version but it didn't work on the final boss and the shock made him catatonic. His parents committed him and he's been there for 25 years.
I remember when this came out in the arcades. The NES version actually attempted to add plot, and was another step in my growing awareness of some mysterious thing I would not know the name of for 3 more years: anime. #FilmAt11

@@atanvardo5730not at all! You shoulf see the daemons and mythological creatures as genetically altered life forms and hybrids. Then it makes more sense. Or the aliens are daemoms from hell as well?
+sainttrunks1982 With that said.. The Nes Version was much better based on it having all aspects (Best Story,Best Music and Great Game play) and the arcade version just has one of the 3.
alxxpspqr This game is its own game unrelated to Legendary Axe. Legendary Axe was distributed by NEC and developed by Victor Musical Industries. I'm sure the Xenomorphs are an homage to Alien.
+KingFossilFER I uploaded a gameplay of this game without dying a year ago. And even before that there were some gameplays with 1 credit. Besides stage 5 which has some difficult segments, the game gives you a lot of extra lives, making it quite easy to beat.
***** oh, i must had missed it when searching. most videos of it didnt say if it was a perfect run or not so you had to check them, and i probably got confused there.
KingFossilFER No problem man. The best way to find good runs, and with that, I mean gameplays without save states or infinite continues is to add "1cc" or "no miss" to your search. This channel uses save states (in most retro games) and its purpose is not to show good skills, but just gameplays from the beginning to the end. You also have channels like ReplayBurners, with very good stuff in it.
The NES version released after the Arcade game, while generally having same gameplay, features completely different level layouts, enemy designs and story.
***** I see it like this: all these Xenomorphs appearing in 80s/90s video games are a testimony to the greatness of H.R.Giger's designs. ...and imitation is still the sincerest form of flattery. :-)
Wow, this game is obviously from a time when samples (as opposed to FM synthesis) was the new black. So many samples in both the game and music, and so few channels to work with resulting in interrupted sound all the time. It didn't age well. The game looks fun though.
This is one of my favorite Arcade games. That's why I ended up buying the Nes game is which is a good game as well. They should have put this on the Super Nintendo or Genesis. The Super ASTYANAX.
Is it even possible to finish this game without dying? Not because of getting hit but mainly due to the time limit. The stage before the last one (with the Alien imitations) just seems too long. I mean you got to the boss with ONE second left. You did that fight perfectly and it still took about 25 seconds...
***** Yeah Arcade games were a bit mean like that. But then again it makes sense. It was a very fun longplay to watch regardless of that one death though. I would have died a LOT more o_o;
+SmashTom Yes, it's possible, you can check a gameplay I uploaded a year ago. It's an easy game to beat with 1 credit, as they give you a ton of extra lives, but really difficult to do it without dying. The segment with fires and the chain guys of stage 5 is quite complicated and you depend on luck to get out alive from that.
la ultima pantalla descoloca un poco no? no se todo parece muy medieval y al final salen los aliens, que conste que no tengo ni idea de historia del juego e gran partida, increible como casi todas las que haces
This s game is downright awsome, however the last stage was shamelessly ripped. ( we all know ) it also went from power fantasy to contra. Strange game, but awesome nonetheless.
The nes version had one of the best storylines ever and had the best nes music ever.

This game is the longest ad for the movie Alien ever
Fun fact: Astyanax means "king of the city" in archaic ancient (as in older than classical) Greek.
I'm amazed by how different this game and the NES game are.
This game really didn't call for sudden Xenomorph. What a strange decision.

Surprised Ridley Scott didn't sue after that last level.
Trust me he has millions of chances to sue especially with Konami/Contra
I used to love this game. Really liked the enemy design
This game held the record for biggest "wtf?" final level until probably Metal Gear Solid 2.

Somebody should mod Butthead into this and replace those “huh”s with his “huh”s
