Welcome to the show! It is our great pleasure to welcome Juno-award-winner, music professor, stellar guitar player, captivating singer and all-round awesome human, Jocelyn Gould to That Pedal Show.
Jocelyn was in Europe doing some live dates, during which she dropped in to see us. What followed was a masterclass in learning and dedication to the instrument, a whole heap of inspiring advice and, of course, some utterly wonderful playing and singing.

My initial reaction when hearing this caliber of playing is, "I'm a terrible guitar player..." but eventually that shifts to, "It's incredible that there are people that can do *this* with the same instrument I enjoy playing." Goodness. Thank you for introducing me to Jocelyn!

The key is just being the best you that you can be. Even if you think you suck. Find the thing that’s you and do that thing better than anybody. People want to compare Hendrix and Page which is stupid because Hendrix is the best Hendrix and Page is the best Page and that’s why they succeed. Jack White is the best Jack White. Nobody can be Jack White the way he does.

That was mesmerizing! You don't actually realize that you're in a trance until she stops playing. What a gentle soul and an incredible artist. One of the best TPS episodes ever.
I saw Jocelyn at the Vancouver jazz fest recently- she is so humble that she didn’t even mention one of her albums won a Juno ( Canadian Grammy)- I wish this great talent all the best.
So, the whole episode I’m thinking she has a great jazz tone without being muddy, her note choice is super interesting while always incredibly musical… and then she sings the last song, and it all comes together.The hybrid electric/acoustic recorded tone, the beautiful and always interesting harmony and melody choices, and HER VOICE!!! Beautiful, alluring, vintage and modern at the same time. This is all the best parts of jazz (in my uneducated opinion). What an absolute treat!

We got a wonderful insight into some of the work that goes into these episodes on the recent Experience Day. The filming and recording are so beautifully done, and the interviewing is so enthusiastic and sympathetic. This is what happens when good people get together with good people!!

Man, I would pay about 200 bucks, maybe more, to go to an event like this in the states. Preferably the Philadelphia area. Pretty sure anyone can come to the country now, whether or not you succumbed to governmental health advice, if that’s what was holding you guys back.
Masterclass in the tonal relationship between fingers, pick angle and strings and the instrument itself. How an acoustic instrument is held, encouraging the wood to resonate. How a semi acoustic has more than just the pickup sound. The back to basics of focusing on the delicacy of slowly picking a simple scale and the subtle nuance of each note. This was “tone is in the fingers” magnified to the max. (No pedals either - name change to That Tonal Show?)
And thats not even talking about the theory, which for me was way over my pay grade (I love jazz but still yet to find my bridge into fully getting a handle of practical theory application), but boy what a master musician Jocelyn is. And then then to top it off with that vocal performance at the end. What a show you had for us Dan & Mick! Many thanks.

Great to see Jocelyn! We were TA's together at Michigan State from 2017-19 studying under Randy Napoleon! The Michigan community is cheering Jocelyn on as she becomes a world star. Wonderful!
I'm sorry I didn't photograph this talented young lady when I was "on the scene" in the jazz community in metro Detroit/Michigan/Midwest and Canada.
Fortunately, I was able to photograph several faculty, alumni, etc. from Michigan State, Michigan, Wayne State, Oakland U, Cliff Bell's, etc.

Yay! More jazz please! Jocelyn is brilliant. You guys should try to get Molly Miller if she ever comes across to the UK - another brilliant improvising musician and teacher, and with a unique sound that blends elements of rock.
Darn That Dream, which she played around halfway, is a favourite of mine - especially Sonny Rollins version, but the final performance of My Old Flame gave me goosebumps - she has such a rich texture to her voice that lent the song the fragility it needs.
Obviously Julian Lage and John Scofield would be the big names, but there are also plenty of brilliant young guitarists in the more contemporary London jazz scene that would be really interesting - Rob Luft would be very cool, for example - his latest album has been very well received. There’s so much great jazz happening in London right now it would be a shame not try to get one of those local players.
Great suggestion! Martin Taylor would also be an interesting feat

Jocelyn, I just wanted to comment about how HONEST you were in responding to the Pedal Dudes. I've taught for 11 years and played guitar for 20... no where at the level you play. But I can say, that self-honesty is one of the MOST important traits of a great teacher. Keep on the keeping on, Professor Gould!!!
Just wonderful to see Dan so moved by Jocelyn's sublime playing (and tone!) I was nearly in tears myself just seeing him! The embodiment of the power of music right there.
The Pedal Show has hit a home run with this interview. Wonderful to see a guitarist with such immense talent and enthusiasm. It was great to see both interviewers directly feel the music and become immersed in her playing. Much respect to this channel for such an eye opening interview.

Dan & Mick; A wonderful episode! TPS is a comprehensive musical venue that is not pigeon-holed into just pedals, because pedals are a part of the over-all musical experience.

Watching Jocelyn play opened my eyes to something I haven't paid attention to before: how important it is to listening to your playing yourself. She is so connected to the music, it is a joy to listen to.
Best episode yet. There are lots of people who can sing & play folk, blues, rock & pop guitar at the same time. It's a rarity in jazz for good reason. I love that she mentioned T-Bone Walker right off the bat. His tone is so open & woody. And he always seemed to have one foot in the jazz genre. Jocelyn's Benedetto with the wood bridge and tailpiece captures the same timbre and feel in the hands of an artist. Thanks Mick & Dan & Jocelyn (and Wes).

What a talented and delightful guest. She smiled when she played, what a refreshing change. The lack of ego and the love for the instrument is wonderful. [Edit] I wrote the first bit before I heard her sing. Her voice is beautiful. Wowsers. Wowsers. Smokin’ I think they used to say way back when. It’s pure then does the “edge of break up (C)” thing.
I've recently been lucky enough to befriend a classically trained musician and it's so game changing. The old adage of "true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing" is the best gift I've had since I heard the intro to Voodoo Chile or Brighton Rock as a bairn. This is so much additional food for thought.
I (apologetically Canadian) did not know Jocelyn was a Canadian. There is something about Winnipeg that produces so many amazing musicians! Thank you M&D and Jocelyn for a sonically wonderful as well as insightful and inspirational episode.
I’m not a massive jazz head, but I love Jocelyn’s joy in her playing and her craft. Such a pleasure to watch
That was a beautiful interview, great questions. Jocelyn is like Joe Pass, the granddaddy of Jazz solo guitar. Jocelyn's right hand anatomy seems perfect for flamenco which uses all fingers and particulary favours a very bent thumb. I love guitars, classical, flamenco, arch-tops and many electric styles too. But the arch-top has something about it. In the 70s, my father worked for ITT and got hold of a valve amp. He thought would help me. It looked like a military device, absolutely huge. First thing I discovered with it was feedback and how to get the Hendrix sound. However, I calmed down and started to use my Hofner 1958 President properly. Because of my love of archtops, before Covid, I bought another archtop. Looks quite beautiful, but is not a patch on the Hofner. The Hofner inspires me to play, to get all those tones. I found this interview fascinating in its detail. Thanks - and how I wish Jocelyn was playing in Scotland.
Wow... wow. It takes a certain courage and trust in your audience for a show dedicated to mangling a guitar signal through so many transistors to focus on the two best pedals in the room - her hands, through as good an acoustic instrument as exists. The Two Rock tubes didn't hurt, but... Well done, boys. More please. Now, I'm off to consume more from Jocelyn.

Love her story. I’m 72 came out of the blues thing in the 60s. Blues is jazz 101 and it’s a natural progression to jazz especially be bop. It explains her great style

Was already a huge Jocelyn Gould fan before this episode. Now that I know she has been studying jazz for less than a decade I am amazed and perhaps a little jealous. Congratulations to her for her inspiring playing and success. If you come to Seattle I hope to grab a lesson.

Wes is my guitar hero. I don’t try to play like him, but he’s by far my favorite. And the language of bebop is very beautiful; sometimes it’s good to slow it down and see how the melodic lines infer the underlying chord progressions. I just recently “discovered” Jocelyn. She’s a wonderful musician, and I could see very early on in this video that she’s also a great teacher. It’s so nice to see younger musicians carrying the torch and adding their own touches. Bravo!

This was my favorite episode of the pedal show! In addition to her great playing, I love Jocelyn's laughing spirit. Then at the end when she sang! She could have a great career as a singer even if she didn't play guitar.👍👍👍

years ago (50) I discovered jazz in and odd way .. found a cassette tape of Wes Montgomery on the road unwound on my paper
my passion for blues .. then I discovered "the blues" and got lost in that pursuit .. listening to Miss Gould has really brought back as interest that I'd lost .. THANK YOU PEDAL MEN and J Gould .. WONDERFUL
Best TPS episode in a while. She’s an incredible player, but moreso just an amazing communicator about music and how one can approach, ingest, learn, understand, and perform it.

Its awesome to see Jocelyn growing and flying, it was yesterday that I met her here in Winnipeg, first close contact at music program at University of Manitoba under Larry's Roy improvisation class, got to saw her and actually asked her to play with me at Hermano's a South American place of great food, drink and of course latin music, anyways, she is playing and singing beautiful. Thank you for the great video.

Stumbled over this due to the YT algorithm and super happy I did. I have never heard of Jocelyn Gould and now I am going to check her out. I love her tone and story. I too have been a blues lover and player for years and fell into listening to the same guys as my ears developed. Also self taught but never really put in the time to learn to play jazz well enough as it was too complex. I tried once taking lessons from a guy who could play it but really did not know what to do with me....he felt I played well and he was used to real beginners. He taught me about a few scales but mostly I paid him to jam and grabbed a little info here and there before he decided to move to France....Anyway, I love it but work and family life sucked up all my time and energy for years. Now as a recent retiree, I am trying to get back to playing guitar and learning jazz but trying to figure out how best to approach it. There are a few guys that play jazz here but dont teach. I can learn other styles like rock, blues, Hawaiian slack key but not jazz. I love all those styles but really want to learn jazz, Dango jazz and fingerstyle.
Man I needed this, thank you, I cried with her singing/song, lovely. What the world needs now is more of this energy.

Jocelyn is from Winnipeg. No wonder she's so great. I'm not from there but I used to visit on business trip and was alway blown away by the local talent at the High & Lonesome Club. First time I ever saw a really White Falcon was there. Some older gentleman with a white beard half way down his chest and hair on his head longer, could barely make his way without help at an open mic. The band started and he tore my head off. I made sure I went back every time I was in town. What a joy Jocelyn is to listen to & how fortunate she is to have the spoon thumb lol
Wow, what an epic show. A good reminder to slow down and really listen and hear how your tone changes with even the smallest adjustments to your technique--and with no pedals or effects. I can imagine that very few guitarists ever reach this level of control and detail in their playing.
Ms. Gould thank you so much for sharing some of your thoughts on playing the guitar. Your attention to detail and it's impact on tone and expression is both enlightening and inspiring. Thanks for the lesson pointers to those of us not fortunate enough to be able to pursue music as a career that could pay the bills. 🙂Love the Dunlop Primetone picks too, but normally use the Dunlop Ultex 1mm Jazz picks for their tone.

Thanks for having the occasional Jazz player on. I’m a pro Jazz player…(about to move to greater Manchester area). I love That Pedal Show. I’ve dreamed of being on, but all I use is a delay/ reverb combo and an always-on booster. So not a ton of crazy effects…but I do play a 1952 Gibson L-5…you guys would love that! 😂 Anyway…glad to see things move occasionally in a Jazz direction. Thanks for what you guys do!
Jocelyn is from near where I live so I've heard her play live locally. She is joyous and exuberant on stage. Technically skilled too of course but what shines through at her shows is how happy she is to be there playing with those people in that moment. She and Joey Landreth are similar in that way in addition to being from the same city

There is so much I can relate to in this video. I went from blues to jazz too. Although my entry into jazz was Bossa Nova rather than Wes Montgomery. For me, the samba rhythm is what just hooked me. I also had a wonderful teacher who could cross over rock and jazz and who focused on musical theory. He had me focus on horn players, especially Wayne Shorter, to learn melody.
She’s phenomenal, a friendship with Joey Landreth must be a gift that really keeps on giving.

I'm always amazed at Jazz players. They are monstrous talents and know all the chords. Jazz will never be my choice of music to listen to but you have to respect the talent and the chops. She's really good.

Talk about timing - I just told my partner last week, after nearly 40 years of playing, I wanted to really get into jazz guitar. And then this treat shows up. What an incredible player (and singer!).

First of all…absolutely stellar playing! Being “That Pedal Show” though, as a sometimes touring jazzer, I do bring a small board, mostly so I can fine tune the eq shape of the amp in the room (especially when stuck with whatever amp is there), plus my own reverb.
Wow. Emotional, compelling. Great stuff.

The difference between the mic'd and unmic'd sound of her playing is amazing. The foundational aspects of tone and technique you all talked about here are things most guitar players could learn from.
