Mick playing his '61 Strat into a pair of Two Rocks in order to talk about delay pedals is the most gloriously gratuitous thing I have ever seen on TPS. I love you guys.
I love direction this channel is going. Not only reviews of pedals, but how to use them. Also love the interviews of other players like Tim Lerch, etc.
This gets so challenging when I have dearly loved and learned from everything you have done all the way back to the gigrig channel. You 2 have changed my musical life more than any of my "idols'. And your playing has been and remains absolutely inspiring. I'm a day job guy w/ a family. My gigging/touring is 20 years ago at this point and now its songwriting and soundtrack recording. Still just a humble novice who can make a dime here and there, but I care about it. And that is how I came to TPS. My own rig would not be anything special if it weren't for the 2 of you - and all your amazing friends. I am hanging on every word and every note. I sold a lot of stuff to make my wife not kill me for getting the Halo and the Dawner Prince Pulse this summer (Mick, I really need you to try that out and give it the biz). But, that Halo is the most amazing delay I have ever played - and I worked it out w/ an expression pedal. It is just brilliant - and so are you. This is 1 of the best and most important episodes I have ever seen - having not missed 1 ever. I just love you boys and this crew of folks who are are this family. .
Ah mate, thanks so much. I think you touched on something here that underpins everything. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, where you are in your journey, the only thing that matters is that you care about it. Let’s be honest, not everyone, in fact, most people don’t, and that’s ok. This is a channel for people who do, for you and Mick and myself and anyone else who cares deeply 🙏
I recently thanked another UA-cam presenter I watch for providing great content for many years without succumbing to UA-cam face/“‘sup fam!”/self indulgent nonsense and I realize I absolutely should be paying you guys the same compliment. Thanks, fellas, even this American appreciates your mild mannered reasonableness 🙏
Hey guys, thanks for getting back to me, so quickly, on the message I received about you having a package for me, for commenting, on the show where you, were explaining using, two delay. I’ve never won anything in my life, and as soon as I saw the massage, I thought it’s got to be scam. Your reply back to me confirmed my suspicions. Just so you know, it has been reported. I don’t why, people have to, ruin things for honest people, by causing them not to trust, interacting with your show, or others like it. Again Thank!
In a live situation as a sound tech, I would use 2 delays on vocals (Kork SDD2000 & SDD 3000) . I would tap tempo the first one to be right on the beat and then off set the second one by about 10-20 ms more, ie. 400 & 420 ms. I panned each delay to hard left and right, then I would then proceed to feed the returns of each delay to the input of the other. It created lots of movement and depth. It was glorius !!!!
The timing of this video made me smile. Last week I placed a Carbon Copy Deluxe and a Wampler Faux Tape Echo on my board just to play around with. I set up the Carbon Copy with an external tap switch giving me two delay settings to swap between. One was set fairly short for a thickening effect. That with the Faux Echo set for a more obvious delay was epic. Ended up removing the tap switch and leaving the Carbon Copy with the short delay time as an always on pedal.
Mick just perfectly explained something I'd been trying to work out. Using the ultra short delay as a doubler. Saw a band play one night and the guy was hitting this pedal that made his sound So thick and fuzzy it was earthquaking. I looked at his board and it was an MXR Carbon Copy. I couldn't figure out how it was achieving the sound. NOW I KNOW. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
For those interested, I do believe I have heard Zach from Mythos say that you can get longer delay times with the Oracle but you have to use the tap tempo. As always, thanks Dan and Mick for the entertainment and education.
New Patreon here! After helping me choose countless times the right pedals for me and learning a lot with your show, it was time. Thank you again for your work.
I’m nearly a week late. But great to come back to a delay video. Because delay is one of the most wonderful things. Period. As the Americans would say.
Dan! What got into you. Your playing today was amazing, love the intro and @ 32:45 you just killed it. That bend staying into another bend was brilliant. Really great stuff and Mick was great as always.
Coincidentally, during your break, I watched the AT episode for the umpteenth time & was thusly inspired to try two delays. Gtr>Xotic AC boost>Marshall Origin 20 head>FX send TC X4 and TC VL3(both set to analog w/mod)>left rtn to Vintage 30 speaker>rt rtn to fx loop of Laney VC30 using the speaker from a Rivera-era Fender Reverb Deluxe II. Messy set up, majestic sound. I can report the notes Mr Timmons plays were - as a previous VCQ correspondent informed - once again nowhere to be found. Lovely show, gents - plenty more inspiration to explore next time I frankenstein that lot back together. Thanks and welcome back. X
Dude!!! You guys are Genius I love being able to make since of the mystery we call the delay pedals!!!! Always love them but to truly understand why and how is forever appreciated
I've been using three analog delay pedals for a long time, slap back, the other 2 set for shimmering Shadows. Loved your show with Andy, I never realised he was the MD and guitarist for Olivia Newton-John, very tasteful player and under rated.
I almost didn’t watch this episode since I’ve never been much of a delay user, but I’m really glad I did. I intellectually understood the different ways you could use two delays, but hearing them all was a revelation. Looks like I’ll be ordering that second delay that I thought would be redundant.
So much to unpack in this episode! Based on earlier TPS shows, I built a (TPS W/D) rig using an Ibanez AD-9 set to slapback feeding a Keeley Caverns delay and it sounds awesome. Then, the Andy T show inspired me to add a Strymon DIG dual delay to the effects loop and use it to replace my reverb. Oh, so good! Now another delay show with a bunch more ideas…I can’t keep up!! Thanks, D&M. Keep ‘em coming….
Right out of the gate you hit me with something I haven't tried. Seems so simple, two delays set at the same time, but with different character. When I'm doing my thing, delays are an almost always on pedal(s) for me. JHS3, Memory Toy and a DD200 (lives on either analog or tape settings). Great show.
Gents! Great show. Two solid takeaways for me. First change the position of the slapback and add another delay to my wet dry wet so each wet has its own delay and none on the dry. Fabulous information. Also gave me a good reason to try the fx loop on the Koch Multitone in parallel instead of serial now that I have a better understanding of parallel. Thanks so much!
what i love about the parallel over series is; you can literally sound like 2 guitarists double up on the same riff but each split chain can be vastly different, creating wonderfully stacked textures....so much inspiration from that setup.
I really like the cleaner sound of the delay in the TS1 loop and also sending each delay to its own amp so they don't delay the delay. The TS1 and CLRS together were heavenly. Great playing, great sound, great info. Thanks and....Cheers.
Yay, I'm one of the first on here! Great topic guys, very relevant to me right now. I am awaiting delivery of the Baphomet double delay by Wes Borland. Only 250 were made.
Sometimes I wonder if you guys are somehow looking over my shoulder from all the way across the pond, when your shows coincide with exactly what I've been playing around with lately. Are you guys part of the The Algorithm? Love the show boys, keep it up!
Great video. The coolest trick I have learned recently and likely you guys have covered in the past is when in stereo with two amps, once you have split your signal to stereo, put a digital delay on the left...set the mix to 100% wet, one repeat, and a 15 to 20 ms delay. I think it is essentially what the Strymon Deco is doing to a degree. Completely widens the spectrum immensely. Super awesome. Thanks for all you do.
Recently discovered you guys and have been binge watching. You guys are awesome. Have learnt so much already, You two are going to cost me so much money haha.
I run a Carbon Copy and Delay Llama Extreme. I usually match the Delay time but they both sound different enough that they add their own character and just make my tone sound fuller. Sometimes I will use the CC for slap and the DLE for longer delays. Either way sounds fantastic.
Great ideas, perhaps even inspirational. I've got the Echosystem, but definitely haven't used it to its full potential. Handily, it's got two delay engines that can be configured in parallel, series or left/right, so every tip in this video can be done in one pedal. Thanks.
great to see you guys using amp drive in part of this episode.... entering the realm of us old school live players ....more please :-) ...stumbled into using 2 delays a while ago - with a short into the amp and a long delay in the loop (for clean and lead) ...sounds huge.... I'm using 2 Tech 21 Boost DLA's set quite differently
Thanks guys. Brilliant show. Excellent ideas, instruction and fun for a wide range of uses. Loved it. Also, let's have amassive shout out for the Echosystem which only featured for a few fleeting moments. Not sure Dan loves it as much as he says mind as it was played for 10 seconds at 58:05 until 58:15 in a show lasting1:02:13 Sure it was talked about for a little longer, but I've done the airtime maths 0:10/62:13 = 0.0016095284%
Its Time i say it. I have followed you guys a long time and looking back i realize that nothing else has had such impact for many years. U have helped me improved my sound and knowlegde, and by doing so also improved my playing, because thats what happens with this sort of evoulution. I see myself as a hole new guitarrist now and for that: Huge THANKS, LOVE and ADMIRATION. Best Regards JOAKIM FLINCK SWEDEN
I love putting two reverse delays after each other in my signal chain. Nothing fancy, just 2 Flashbacks. But the feedback makes this amazing and unpredictable soundscape which is unique and chaotic at the same time. It's hard to play sometimes sure, but it gives me such an amazing sound, especially when giving them different delay times
Nice! I have the Catalinbread Echorec and was thinking about doing this with either ther Echoplex or the Belle Epoch. The intrigue in both Boss Waza DM-2W and Keeley Halo have me wanting more than my wallet can provide!
For years, I had a deluxe memory man on my board that was always on. I would adjust the mix with my foot. It gave me a nice chorused pad beneath my playing that wasn't distracting with the mix down low. I miss doing that.
Awesome! Really like dual delays. I must say: a Boss DD-500 can give you all the flexibility without much complications. Dual, series, parallel, dual + dual, any combinations. It's mind blowing...
phenominal ,, some of the best sounds ever to agitate an unsuspecting molecule of atmosphere, agree with mick there,, mind blown, but add "willingly "! great to see you both grooving the syncopation between delays, dan`s just relentless on his crusade for complexity, its more than impressive 😎👍👍
The FX in parallel is genius. I just tried Chorus and Echo parallel into two amps, each effect sounds clearer/cleaner as Mick said, amazing. Now I want to try this dual delay thing and some Reverb+Echo in parallel too.
I came up with a great guitar part through two delay pedals, sounded great! I couldn't get it to work in the context a full mix with drums, bass guitar and a second guitar. It's a very useful thing, but context is important. If it doesn't work in a song, simplify. If you can put it in a song, do it!
Hi dan and mick, you put a smile on my face, i enjoyed this so much!!! Back to the roots bloody roots😍 have a nice weekend!! Love time effects and necause of you still learning those specifics, and when dan plays those beatiful chords warms my soul!! Love you guys, greetings from holland hans
I have 3 delays on my board, an EchoBrain early in the chain with time and repeats all the way down to act more like a doubler/boost, then later a SolidGoldFX EM-III to do superclear digital tape-delay emulation followed by a DOD Rubberneck for dirty but beautiful analog delay. But this was cool to watch because I don't usually run them at the same time, I have some new stuff to try!
I like to use a Tape or Lo-Fi Delay into a bright digital delay, as it gives me some multi-head sounds, as well as having one more level of crazy to go to, during a really trippy lead.
Mick and Dan. Thanks for bringing up The Edge a true master of sonic landscapes. With that said, and this being a very uncommon occurrence, you are off base on the delay he uses on Street. It is just one delay (dotted 8th) with 5 repeats with modulation on repeats and there you go. Try it. Keep up the great videos and those amazing T-shirts
Uh oh, looks like Mick found another Two Rock! 👏 Been using two delays for a while: a Maxon AD999 for slap and short delay time and a Volante for lots of stuff. Volante can do anything the Maxon can but the Maxon has a sound that seems like digital still can’t fully replicate
Fabulous show as always guys! Like many others I’m also having two delays on the board right now. A Catalinbread Belle Epoch (standard version) for the more suttle, roomy Echoplex effect. And a Death By Audio Micro Dream set pretty long (600ms) for just a grainy, lo-fi, bucket brigade-goodness texture. Will definitely try that phasey thing you did at the beginning, very cool!
Id say this is the first time that pedal show are doing something that ive been doing for a good while! carbon copy in to a flashback II is what ive been using with great success kinda quarter note form CC into dotted eighths on FB2. I have used the echorec by catalinbread in to an ARP 87 a fair bit too but it can get a bit messy depending on how much the Echorec is doing. But analog to digital is my preferred setup, analog to analog for me is too dark and digital to digital is too bright unless your using an analog or tape emulation in the first one :) love it!
Echorec should be after, as it’s already a multi-head delay. I’ve done the darker delay into a brighter one, for many years. When I was in a band with keys and two other guitars(electric and acoustic), it worked really well to cut through the mix, without reverb, or very little. I actually like the Kilobyte into a DD-3, or any digital delay, that can get a brighter repeat. I use the havoc switch to really get some unique sounds for leads.
@@CorbCorbin Hey man! Ran this config at a jam the other night and your right, it works. I was always on the same page with dark into bright but having the echorec after definitly makes the thing a great deal more flexible. Cheers!
Yeh love this… been using an MXR echoplex and a Boss DD7 on my board for years, each with an individual mini tap tempo sat side by side, so i can easily adjust tempo on them individually or stomp both together for the dotted 8th / quarter note thing as needed… simple and good - gotta try that doubling delay 30ms setting - sounded wonderful. Cheers lads
hi guys , on watching this show on dual delays I was thinking of an english band called The Durutti Column -the guitarist used echo and delay to beautiful effect ( his playing is really wonderful his finger style chords are really harmonically advanced ,well worth checking his first two albums) also I remember John Martin using this dual delay to make his guitar sound float in space.
This is one of the reasons why I use the Boss GT1000 core on my board sometimes, as you can set up to 4 different delays and put them anywhere in the chain that you like, without having to take up too much space on your board.
I have to say - I haven't taken the Halo off my board since it came. And even better than that - I've only tweaked the level knob (you have to bring it down in the mix or it takes over) but otherwise I haven't touched it. Magic!!
Feels this video is tailored just for me. My only delay pedals are the carbon copy and the recently acquired DD-200. I was just pondering the other day if I should run them together and how I might go about that. Cheers mates!
Great episode (as always), thanks a lot guys! By the way i noticed, with a certain surprise, how much "telly like" sounds the bridge pu of Mick's Strat.
So this is a great video guys and I have gone back-and-forth in my years of playing in regards to delays. i’ve had standalone delay units the very first one ever was the boss DD3 that I bought in 1982 I believe no tap tempo of course. Then my next biggest purchase was a Roland GPA one of the first for real multieffects units and from that day on I’ve been back-and-forth multi effects… Delay as an analog pedals mostly no program ability and then I go back to multi effects… I finally was healed of that compulsion but what I realize is I don’t need a lot of delay… it just gets in the way I want a little bit of spice I don’t want it to drown out the taste of my meal so for me two delay petals even three are great I don’t really do much a lot of combining I just don’t like having a pedal they can do 128 different patches and I got a remember which is which. I currently use the standard TC flashback, the mini flashback and the ARP delay. I find the only way I can make them play nice together is if I have a Switcher, i’ve been trying to scale the physical size of my board down so if I put a sweater on there it kind of defeats the purpose although I’ve been curious about something like a midi mouse, Something that only relates to the delight paddles not sure if I’m thinking straight but if that doesn’t work out I’m good with it just trying to focus on the plane
Great episode! There is/was a factory patch in the Line 6 Helix floor called “Secret Journey” that was set up to mimic Andy Summer’s sound for the song of the same name (A Roland GR300 for those playing the home game). I think it used 8 or 9 different delays all in series!
I picked the Boss DD500 because it will do all of these things by programming the patches differently (though I need a good switcher for the before / after preamp thing). I typically run a tape delay with short time and modulation on the "dry" amp, and add a longer digital with phasing to the "wet" side for leads. Another patch has a reverb-y setting plus a reverse delay for a faux shoe-gaze feel. Another patch has the delays in series for a quarter plus dotted eighth (in perfect time because they set from the same tempo tap). I can also set it to kill dry for true wet/dry, or parallel delays to both amps, and much more! The DD500 does it all.
I've taken a bit of stick over the years for being a 2-delay kinda guy. But you can really do soooooooo much with two delays that you simply cannot do with one. My stock thing is a reverse delay into a forwards delay, both sync'd with each other to a quarter note. It gives me these gorgeous washes!
I haven't checked your merch/store yet, but I would love to have a CD of music that Dan & Mick play on. You two inspire me both in my pedal applications but in playing styles, also.

I did say that to Dan before we started filming. His reply was simply, ‘This is That Pedal Show’. I did have to chuckle. Hahaha. Cheers Mark!
A fully appropriate activity, I heartily agree! Great episode, guys. Cheers!
I liked the bit where he tried to use the headstock to hit a switch
If you ever considered a lesser alternative, go drunk you're home
😂😂😂

Only I’m 30 and I’m the prime of recording and touring

Dan really shines today. Love that the enthusiasm is still going strong.
Daniel's playing at the start of the video - amazing! Thanks for making my Friday afternoon even nicer!

You can push the time to the limits of the chips but the signal will degrade tremendously. The chips can’t handle it but it’s a neat sound!
I'm thankful they didn't abbreviate "analog" in the title, like they did with "digi".
Digi & Anal!
Oh maaaaaaan ! Dan !!!!
What a freaking crazyness you did with the quarter and dotted 8th.
New Patreon here! After helping me choose countless times the right pedals for me and learning a lot with your show, it was time. Thank you again for your work.
Slapback into a longer delay. That's my jam!

Wow, that opening piece Dan. Magic, inspirational!
Having just added a rubberneck and a flashback 2 together this episode has me drooling.
I've been using three analog delay pedals for a long time, slap back, the other 2 set for shimmering Shadows. Loved your show with Andy, I never realised he was the MD and guitarist for Olivia Newton-John, very tasteful player and under rated.
3 is the right number
Parallel is what I was thinking when this started. I hadn't really thought about some of the ways you did it.

the parallel delays at the end through headphones is epic!

Hahaha! Wish we were. More views and more cash would soon follow. Ha. Good job neither of those things have ever really motivated TPS. Argh. :0)

dang you too mick!!! just had to get a little farther in
Thanks Matthew 🤓🙏

Thanks guys. Brilliant show. Excellent ideas, instruction and fun for a wide range of uses. Loved it.
Also, let's have amassive shout out for the Echosystem which only featured for a few fleeting moments.
Not sure Dan loves it as much as he says mind as it was played for 10 seconds at 58:05 until 58:15 in a show lasting1:02:13
Sure it was talked about for a little longer, but I've done the airtime maths
0:10/62:13 = 0.0016095284%
Its Time i say it. I have followed you guys a long time and looking back i realize that nothing else has had such impact for many years. U have helped me improved my sound and knowlegde, and by doing so also improved my playing, because thats what happens with this sort of evoulution. I see myself as a hole new guitarrist now and for that: Huge THANKS, LOVE and ADMIRATION. Best Regards JOAKIM FLINCK SWEDEN
Dan, you did it again! Awesome show intro piece!
I've been listening to it for 5 years following your videos but man,
That RED TELE IS SPECIAL!
Great playing by its owner!
I personally love putting a EP-3 single repeat style delay into an Echorec style multihead ‘swell’ echo
Niiiiiice! That'll do!
Mick, that blonde ES is purrrrdy. Great vid. Thanks guys. 🤙
It’s a really interesting way of using digital in a way that helps the analogue not get too muddy. Or to add some clarity to a dark analogue delay.
Awesome! Really like dual delays. I must say: a Boss DD-500 can give you all the flexibility without much complications. Dual, series, parallel, dual + dual, any combinations. It's mind blowing...
It’s a GREAT unit that DD-500. Nice one!
Came to say exactly this
I run a strymon volante and timeline together. Wonderful for having one focusing on the tape sound and the other doing complex effecty delays
This makes a lot more sense, great fun episode.
phenominal ,, some of the best sounds ever to agitate an
unsuspecting molecule of atmosphere, agree with mick
there,, mind blown, but add "willingly "! great to see you both
grooving the syncopation between delays, dan`s just
relentless on his crusade for complexity, its more than
impressive 😎👍👍
That intro jam was absolutely killer! Such a great episode overall!
Beautiful progression in 3/4. Love it.
More then a pedal show! Beauty'
That TS-1 amp sound INCREDIBLE!!!
You can hear Joey Landreth play it on this week’s show!
Controversial opinon: I prefer Mick’s playing over Joey Landreth.
But of course I will be watching and enjoying that episode!!
Maxon 999 is a classic! Love mine.
@@j.j.lavishly827 do you prefer the 999 for short or long delays?
Fantastic! Greatly appreciate all you guys put into your content. Look forward to Fridays even more because of TPS.
You know Dan killed it in that intro...😏 And Dan knew it too 😊 Cheers from Newport Beach, CA. 👋🏿
And then I learn how to correctly use my ARP 87 🤦♂
Cheers!
very educational and eye opening video.
Cheers lads
Ran a vintage version of what you describe many moons ago - an Echoplex EP-3 into a Roland SDE-1000 digital delay.
hi guys , on watching this show on dual delays I was thinking of an english band called The Durutti Column -the guitarist used echo and delay to beautiful effect ( his playing is really wonderful his finger style chords are really harmonically advanced ,well worth checking his first two albums) also I remember John Martin using this dual delay to make his guitar sound float in space.
I think Vini Reilly used a RE-201 Space Echo, though perhaps not exclusively.
@@iantaylor5911 -Or a 301 with chorus and reverb? anyway, I am glad you know his music he is very underated like Johgn Mcgeoch ,thanks Nick
This is one of the reasons why I use the Boss GT1000 core on my board sometimes, as you can set up to 4 different delays and put them anywhere in the chain that you like, without having to take up too much space on your board.
Even up to 6 if you use dual mode master delay.
Who I’m kiddin. You guys are awsome
Always enjoy the content, but I really appreciate the pedal concept videos like these
I have to say - I haven't taken the Halo off my board since it came.
Dan, that color sunburst on your Strat is what the reissues never get right. Stunning guitar.
Mick. Cheers!

I meant Mick lol
My current chain is DMM, into Belle Epoch, into eventide space. Absolutely glorious.
Great episode! There is/was a factory patch in the Line 6 Helix floor called “Secret Journey” that was set up to mimic Andy Summer’s sound for the song of the same name (A Roland GR300 for those playing the home game). I think it used 8 or 9 different delays all in series!
Interesting. Alan Holdsworth also used multiple delays.
Still watching right now. It's nice hearing Dan stretch out in his comfort zone
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Good one. Please dive into that Scarlet Tunic one day. Have a great weekend!
I missed this one and it’s very timely as I reconfigure
I haven't checked your merch/store yet, but I would love to have a CD of music that Dan & Mick play on.
You two inspire me both in my pedal applications but in playing styles, also.
Great dual delay pedals nova delay, dig, eventide Timefactor, boss dd20/dd200. There are more but these work amazing and are intuitive
