Simon’s dancing is everything. I work at a high school and some kids are showing up looking like early 80s Duran Duran. Maybe I’m imagining it, but I’m seeing something emerge. 😆
Thank you Brad. My intention is to do all of their videos but it’s going to depend on UA-cam and the record companies if they allow me to do them. I’m in the middle of some disputes right now and should find out within a couple of weeks if this is gonna be possible or not. Stay tuned
John Taylor's music conception was what pivoted Duran Duran to succeed in America and the world. Not just Andy's guitar IMO. Because John became very Americanized early on and knew what music Americans liked. Not Andy. I think people need to give a lot more credit to John for starting Duran and then after graduating high school Nick joined and they crafted what they wanted the band to be way before Andy even entered the picture. Then Roger and then Simon. The rest is history. Chemistry!? Yes. And it was just the right moment in time to be successful!
No it's bloody MTV. The flaming tasteless Yanks were so impressed with the sun-drenched beaches and lovely girls and cute guys that they then figured out we need to play the song! This took a fully YEAR or so before they cottoned on (as usual) and it had nothing to do with their sound as they'd spent a long amount of time touring there before 1982 to no reaction. Americans! It WAS their right to be successful but why not, they were offering something their bleeding groups and singers didn't have and Xenophobic America thought they'd delve into a few other musical styles that weren't there on for 5 minutes. Thankfully Duran continued to have success in that wretched current, despite the continued barriers and shitty reviews and pointless media hate from the hateful "grown-up serious music press".
That's great you, as a fan, is going to be reacting to Duran Duran music videos. I love their early days, this song, and video! Would be awesome if you react to all their official music videos in order? 😅 Or at least try to react to the less reacted DD music videos on UA-cam, like "Out of my Mind", "Electric Barbarella",and "What Happens Tomorrow".
Be sure to review Acadia videos as well. I’m interested in your take on “Goodbye is Forever”. Did you ever notice that the end shot of that video looks strikingly like the cover of Notorious.
Totally agree with you on the clothes and hair, especially Nick and Andy’s hair. What were they thinking? So glad they didn’t keep it that way. I also agree with the Arena version being more “rock” and raw. I love it. I’ve always liked this song but not the video except for those few moments of shirtless Simon, lol. I’d love a review of any of their videos. Maybe some that are less known, like “Serious”, “Do You Believe in Shame?”, “Meet El Presidente” or some from Arcadia.
You're not wrong. Typically the bloody US only got into them a full year AFTER every normal country did all thanks to bloody MTV. So basically the debut would have been re-released early 1983 after "Rio" album began making tracks AFTER MTV had hit with their vids. Though technically 'Sound Of Thunder' was released as their debut single put out on as part of an EP with 'Anyone Out There' on the back for the UK but did not have a video back then and it didn't get picked up for play. EMI messed up and should have released it AFTER 'Girls On Film'-who stops releasing songs abruptly from an album once your latest achieves the highest (to date) placing?! But sadly, Kim Wilde and many others in the UK had to put up with this shit too!
A very unusual introduction to a band's debut promo video. Massively risky to have your opening shot of the drummer rather than the lead singer. I think it showed they had a massive amount of confidence in their material and a certain bravado that Duran Duran has maintained throughout their career. A far cry from the early 1980s Birmingham that was really rather grey, dull and had little bravado to it! By the way, yes, I had burgundy hair with a fringe that length!
Nick and John are in their own thing as always ( to me they look great! A bit Blade Runner) Simon its a bit off of this new romantic look. Andy looks terrible as ever. The video has J. Taylor Paints and designs ideas.
I would love it if you did a review of the video for "Friends of Mine". This is one of my all time favorite Duran Duran tunes and even though the first part of the video looks good for how early it was in their career, they, pretty much, just used the exact same video footage from the first half of the video for the second half. So UNLIKE Duran Duran. It made the video less than the equivalent of a B rated movie. Again, this is shocking when everyone knows that the vast majority of DDs videos were visual masterpieces in their own right. Friends of Mine video looks like they ran out of money to film the second half of the song so they just replayed the first half. Wth?
How sad you need an electric guitar sound to make it over there. You'd think they had all the elements already. So then, as most DD albums are WITHOUT Andy, explain THEIR success in America!
I ended up John's hairstyle. No offense but it is busting me up listening to a guy with no hair talking about DD hairstyles. And I think you were too young to handle DD in 81/82.
That’s funny, you said, “hey, that’s Roger playing real drums!” Miss that organic sound from them! I support future Past and Paper Gods but too much electronic sounds .
John is and always was an excellent bass player for being a player for such a short time!
Agreed

I remember seeing this wonderful video on MTV, and I was so impressed!!!
I love your insights. I hope you do all their videos.

They knew very well what they wanted and how to sound

They just smashed everything and everyone
Me and Kathy enjoy your videos. Duran Duran is one of our favorite bands.
Really!! That’s great. Good to hear from you!
You should definitely react to all of their videos. It's a long journey, but oh my god, so worth.!

I do believe that’s what I’m gonna try to do. So hang on it’s gonna be a long ride. L O L
I agree, You should definitely react to all of their videos. It's a long journey, but oh my god, so worth.
Like no band I had ever seen or heard. I was like Roger. I was born and have loved this band from that day to this!
I love my harvest edition lp that starts off with a Planet Earth and then Girls on Film.
That’s how I think it should’ve been

I absolutely will and I don’t exactly recall. I’ll have to take a look
And Powerstation! I love that album.
Another great review! Could you review…”I don’t want your love” from Big Thing?
I absolutely will. Thank you
Everyone danced like Simon, back in the days. 54 here 😁Cheers from Lisbon.
You could also make videos about the Duran Duran producers and their work with the band (and with other artists, if you want to).
I loved Do ya think Im sexy when i was a kid, and I knew this was related, even before Andys revelation

Exactly!! That is my intention. Let's DO THEM ALLLLLLLLLL!
I have my hair just like John Taylor and burgundy too
Right now?

Regards John Taylor’s hair. There was a four year period where “every” male teen Saturday shelf stacker at Sainsbury’s sported this.
🤠 One of those dancers is the singer of Sigue Sigue Sputnik!
Dang I never noticed that! Now all I hear is Do you think I’m sexy. 😆
You looks much better with goatee👌Obviously IMHO and with all due respect ✌️
I don’t disagree. Mistakes were made!!! Lol
Oh man! You look pretty different 😯
Don’t worry. The goatee is going to come back. Mistakes were made!
What the hell are you talking about? These guys kicked ass.
John Taylor looks like bambi on ice
🤣
Loved John Taylor's hair here ! Hated Nick and Andy's though.

OMG!! Love it!
or Roger could have just strong jawline lol
Yes! I was 14 when 'Planet earth' was released and I dyed my hair for the first time and it was burgundy!

You call this disco?! Disco is cheesy 70s mush and was generally dead by 1981.
