Only been a Duranie for a year and it was the lyrics and melodies of their deeper cuts that captivated me. I never even realized, until watching your video, that Simon's harmonies and backing vocals were a big contributing factor also!
Just recently their song "She's Too Much" has been added to my favs because there's a section where the harmonies are just gorgeous.

I would add New Religion, not only because Simon does loads of vocals and harmonies on the chorus; but because of the prechorous. People call it rap. I don't get that vibe at all. It's more like a poem being spoken very fast with the beautiful harmony "I don't know why this evil bothers (follows?) Me." While in the poem section he is quickly spouting out the words 'I get along fine with the friends of mine...etc)
Simon has stated before that that bit is a conversation with himself. His alter ego vrs himself Talk about self soul harmonizing! He was deliberately baring his soul to exercise the demons and guilt he had for questioning his faith, probably trying to exorsize his demons. I love everything about that song and yes the harmonies are haunting. I hope you appreciate my feedback.

"Is There Something I Should Know" Has excellent harmony! The guitar and the synthesizer in this song have such great harmony together! Andy singing along with Simon in the pre-chorus and the main chorus great harmony there! Then it's got that cool harmonica solo. Then in the songs close-out, Simon sings with all the other Duran Duran members singing background. Awesome song!

I love you constantly saying that Duran are your fav group, and another chart about them is only ever a good idea. I'm glad you add a song by "Pop Trash" and add you do like it even though it's got to be bottom. I don't know why 'Save A Prayer' has to be here when 'Secret Oktober', 'Anyone Out There' & 'Lonely In Your Nightmare' isn't. And what Simon is doing with his voice on 'Ordinary World' is far more impressive and far-reaching than on 'Save A Prayer' cos your voice grows and develops as you age. And you're right, you can't NOT add something from "Big Thing". You should have added 'I Believe: All I Need To Know' from the same year NOT on the album, awesome ending with his harmonies. Re-listen to kit. Simon's vocal development matured with their least-wow moment, the silly 3rd album and is the best thing about the album, much better than the songs themselves deserve. Why have you put 2 songs from this album when anything from "Notorious" & "All You Need Is Now" with their amazing choruses and truly great harmonising.
I know you sadly hate one of their career-best ("Red Carpet Massacre") but 'She's Too Much' is another lovely ballad. I know you love the awesome 'My Antarctica' but it's a more lonely vocal. Just got to your comment on 'American Science'-COOL! I'm so on with you on the "I'm a harmony guy" and I'm always singing to the things I love, but I'm a Brit, so it's generally Brits acts from the 80s I love, but for albums, only a rare few. ABBA before the 80s arrived, then Kim Wilde always (she arrived same moment Duran did), Bangles, A-ha, Sandra and Alphaville are some of my best and their all great in the harmony department, and yes, Duran are up there with this seven.

If you're unfamiliar, have a listen to Local Natives (particularly, their first album "Gorilla Manor", and most recent "Violet Street").... I somewhat think of them as a modern day Duran at least in spirit somewhat... And one of their bread and butter features IMO is unexpected and ridiculously creative 2, 3 and 4 part harmonies. But it's all of them singing, not just a frontman tracked again.

My Antarctica is another great one harmony wise.

  • @MattyHalloween

Ordinary World has effective harmonies because of when Simon chooses to use it.
    First chorus - no harmony.
Second chorus- adds harmony on just the line “there’s an ordinary world”
Last chorus- every line has a harmony.
It’s a great way to create a subtle tension or climax without the listener really understanding why. Of course there’s delay and doubling effect on his vox for this song but the trick with the harmonies on this song are almost in where he chooses not to include them and where he does. Keeps the chorus from getting stale. Very clever songwriting and production trick. An amateur songwriter (me) would probably just lose up every chorus with stacks of vocals and harmonies. Duran are clearly very sophisticated songwriters.

Bloody underrated songwriters too-and Simon's ace voice is utterly underrated. They SOO beat the shit out of the same 80s groups that are still bizarrely over-lauded and absurdly feted forever more-Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics, Weller, Sting, Phil Collins, Cure and so on.

@@RedMugMusic They were a real band from their very start. It’s only in hindsight that one mistake them for such, ostensibly due to the media backlash circa 1984 when the perceived attention was primarily from teenage girls. Sure, I attended my first concert in 84 at MSG where the audience was comprised of mostly teenage girls. But a band doesn’t acquire multiple top 10’s and number 1’s by only appealing to a narrow market. Duran appealed to the masses - hence their massive success, but were pigeonholed at the time by a media which held onto an old-skool mindset that a popular band who appealed to the teenage girl market(let’s face it - they’ve always been the tastemakers concerning pop music) were a contrivance.

My favourite is New Moon On Monday, if you listen to the 12inch version at the beginning and the end they push forward the harmonies, especially at the end you can clearly hear , what I think is Andy Taylor, singing the harmony. This is the track:
