Brian... I finally opened my deluxe cd and took the plastic wrap off after staring at it for three weeks wondering where is time going!!! Six years waiting for this! Laughing Boy is my favorite bonus tract!! The chorus is amazing and now I have to listen to it 4-5 x a day to get my fix!! Love it!! I agree w that other fella.. Hammerhead is their worst tract ever!!! I gave a try and skip it every time!! Sucks , the rest of the album is great and as I continue to listen to it, I’m finding the subtle guitars in each song!! Wing/ Laughing Boy- my two favs!!!
    Thanks

In Nothing Less Simon does actually say thank you for the "nothings" baby a few times. He also does say loving. And fun fact the background vocals is Simons daughter Saffron.

To be honest, I hadn’t heard Invocation, Velvet Newton or Laughing Boy when I answered your poll. I saw them on UA-cam but didn’t take time listen. I have now. Nothing Less is still my favorite. Next would be Laughing Boy, Velvet Newton, Invocation and the one could have been left completely undone, Hammerhead.
Laughing Boy gave me Bowie’s Ashes to Ashes vibes and Velvet Newton gave me Night Boat vibes. Thanks again for another great review. Have a good week!

I agree that if the track is not on all fornats, its a bonus. It's a 10 song release which actually makes it better and overall tighter

I know this is slightly off topic, but after listening to the new album all the way through ever since I got it, Falling with Mike Garson piano and the total funk groove of the bass just has me shutting my eyes and dreaming of all the different ways to dance and live through this moment in time ❤

I feel like Invocation is meant to be a compliment to Hammerhead. The outro of HH morphs into Invocation. Wish Velvet Newton started the album.

I would have preferred velvet newton to have been used as an introduction to the whole album, it's not a bad track at all but it interrupts the flow of the album in a weird way, unlike the big thing interludes where they did link the different musical motifs and provided variety.

I love Velvet Newton and I think it would had been cool as the first track on the album , especially with how it begins with Nick saying "This is how it starts" and how futuristic it sounds. I like Hammer Head but still hate the rap part. Nothing Less wasnt one of my faves at the beginning because of the backgroung singing of "what am I gonna do..." but now I love it. And yes, it did remind me of Western movies! Love Saffron's backing singing! Still love Laughing Boy!

Laughing Boy, Nothing Less and Hammerhead are great tacks. I don't know why so many people are saying that the rap part is not good, but I think it okay, makes the song sound great.

    My ranking:
    1. Valentine Stones
    2. Planet Roaring
    3. Northern Lights
    4. Cinderella Ride
    5. Laughing Boy
    6. Nothing Less
    7. Hammerhead
    8. Evil Beach
    9. Invocation
    10. Velvet Newton
You can see which album I like best.
‘Velvet Newton’ should be the opening song, as the first thing you hear is “This is how it begins.”
And ‘Invocation’ should be the last song. Those 2 short songs make for a good intro and outro to the album.

  • @TheChadTI

Nick should have gone full Medazzaland on Velvet Newton and dis vocals.👍

    Hi Brian.
Yes, Hammerhead and Nothing Less are both on the standard CD.
I'm not a massive fan of Hammerhead except for the bass line that I'd love to hear isolated from the rest of the track. There are definite nods to one of my favourite bassists, Mick Karn, the much-missed bass player from Japan (a band that was a huge influence on Duran Duran).
My favourite (out of those in your poll) is Nothing Less. One of my favourites on the album, to be honest. The guitar and bass sound, to me, like they could belong on Duran Duran 81, plus I feel it's got a little bit of a James Bond vibe going.

Great album, but should have started with Velvet Newton. Invisible is amazing but it starts a bit startling without the build up that VN provides

  • @rodrigovalerosancho2234
    @rodrigovalerosancho2234 3 роки тому +2

The five acts are amazing, but they have to be heard with the whole album, which gives it an epic scale. Velvet Newton is perfect before the disco dance Moroder tracks, as if warning you beforehand that the LP will not stay long in a cheesy mood. Laughing Boy is simply one of the best songs they have ever done. It starts a bit clunky, but when the chorus kicks in it is wonderful. Invocation needs to be listened after Hammerhead, not independently, and it is another cracking tune. And many many spaghetti westerns were actually filmed in Almería, Spain, not in Italy, as a matter of fact. Interesting review.

Invocation begins where HH ends , kinda concept story episode 1 & 2 . So it's true. It's not a proper song on it's own. Velvet Newton as well seems more an interlude. DD have that idea of fun 😉 Big Thing and Aynin, they got some lovely and / or weird fragments. Velvet Newton has been used to open some gigs in Birmingham. So they used it like an intro Indeed. About the three proper songs , LB, HH, NL I too ADORE nothing less. I agree on the backing vocals on LB . It would have been great. Yet I love the melancholy and Energy, the nod to Ashes to Ashes and the soooo andytaylorish guitars. And the guitars on NL. Lovely. Coxon is the nearest thing to young Andy Taylor ever. It makes sense because Coxon for sure listened dearly to at least first 2 DD albums. Blur's "girls and Boys" sounded like the drunk and spoiled child of Girls on film and Friends of mine. P.S. Spaghetti western legendary director was Sergio Leone. But NL screams "David Lynch" , to me.

Hey Red, what’s all this talk about ‘Hammerhead’ being Duran’s WORST SONG EVER? It makes me wonder if these people have actually heard all of the band’s songs? Maybe you can post another one of your Questions? You could call it:
“WHAT IS DURAN DURAN’S WORST SONG?”
Here are the songs on my list in the running for that title.
    Drug
    Hothead
    All Along The Water
    Read My Lips
    Drowning Man
    Nite-Runner
    Skin Divers
    Danceophobia
    Which songs make your list?
PS: To make that list, I had to re-listen to all those songs to make sure they were really as bad as I remembered. I found that ‘Downtown’ and ‘Venice Drowning’ are NOT as bad as I remembered. So they did not make my list.
If you are as interested as I am to see what song everyone else thinks is Duran’s worst, pop the Question.

I think the exclusion of some songs may depend on the co-producer .The album intended as a single work needs the various components (songs) to act in unison. Sometimes a good song can overshadow other good songs and make the album worse as a whole. (Although I believe that the perfect album must feature 10 hit singles). "Laghing boy" is one of the best but has a slow scrolling because it is a bit sad. If you put the first two verses of "the promise" and add "the laghing boy" chorus to it, the perfect song comes out. It seems to be made of the same pasta. "Invocation" has a perfect melody. It does not have dead points from the melodic point of view according to my vision, like 3 other songs (more joy, all of you, laughing boy) also it seems more a piece of song than a song but I would put it in my hypothetical album along with the other three. The others NOT, also i like. It should also be noted that artists do not always have the true value of the songs in their hands. Just think of the Oasis, whose album most recognized by fans is Masterplan, the compilation of b-sides... and i like it so much!!
