Great review as always. Got one of these, without the extra coaches, in the train set last year - not run it over Peco points yet but I plan to use Peco track on a layout soon so its something I'll need to keep in mind when running this, thank you for highlighting that potential issue.
I love the Class 373 and I love Hornby's model of it, but it remains pretty much unchanged since the day it was first released in the 90's. I would say it's time for a complete retool, but I fear it would end up costing 300 quid just for the two power cars, nevermind the coaches. I have asked Hornby to consider at least tooling up the buffet car which the model has been lacking throughout its life.
Thanks for that. Yeah, a full re-tool would probably push up the cost big time. A buffet car would be nice though along with addressing the traction tyres and adding some lights. I'm looking into both of the latter as I do like this model as well.
Hi, if you mean the traction tyres then there's more to it than just removing them - you also need to swap out the wheels carrying them. I covered this in another video: ua-cam.com/video/pXL17qmqjpI/v-deo.html
I'm looking into it.... This should also resolve the Peco points issue as it's the outer flange on the wheels carrying the traction tyres that are shorting. Will share my findings.
@@EuviRail thanks alot could you also look into lighting issue as well please I would like to know how you resolved this problem thanks alot take care now
I have an HO Eurostar from Jouef which is very similar in size and quality. Probably formed the basis to the Hornby model? (I notice on internet its referred to as Hornby/Jouef). This model had plastic rot in the bogies causing them to collapse. Still I see Peters Spares has some spare parts at a cheap price. Exceptionally cheap model.
@EuviRail Wow. I also forgot to mention the other annoying fact there's no cab interior and I believe it's grossly over priced for what I would say is a railroad model? When you run yours around your impressive layout does it get 🔥?
@@Mike-kc8rl This is a Railroad level model alright - there isn't even a floor on the cab so in adding lights you would need to add one to avoid bleed. I didn't notice it particularly hot but I was only running at speed in bursts. I wouldn't trust this to last long @70%+ power for any length of time.
Unbiased, honest review, new trains are not my interest but your review style is great.👍
Thanks Peter. This my last of the newbies until the Hornby Class 800 Azuma lands. Will be jumping back a few decades for the next few videos.

The Peco issue is directly linked to the traction tyres which I'm looking into replacing. More anon.
I am thinking of getting a 373, but because this is such a basic model I may be getting the Kato N gauge model.
That's fully understandable given where the model is at today.

I have a question, should you take off the rubber wheel protections or should you leave them on?

Could you not replace or upgrade the wheels to get rid of the traction tire issue completely?

Are the pantographs fully liftable? Since you've only shown them halfway up I am wondering that
They are. I have some height limitations on the current layout so I didn't want to take any chances fully extending them.

I'm not sure of the ancestry Alan but you could be right.
Looks good ,no lights still! The motors in the early versions were appalling, with many burning out! A very poor show from Hornby!
The lights are on my To Do list. Hornby have done nothing with this model.
