Bought the 'visitor centre' version following your excellent first review. Hornby have on a number of occasions offered the coach pack at £48 which i also bought. Beautiful runner no issues and runs well on tight curves ,
@@EuviRail I got mine from Hattons about a year ago for £100, DCC ready and with only a few grimy bits on it- so basically new. They are indeed brilliant models.
Nice modern train at a good price. I operate a 4 car DC unit. Yes you could improve it but then it would not be a budget offering. I got DCC available at the tracks via DPDT switches and have some DCC and DCC sound models but generally just get DC now as prefer DC characteristics. The novelty of DCC sound soon wears off.
Thanks Alan. For certain trains and this is one of them, DC is definitely preferable. I'm filming the Eurostar set for a review and it's the same. DCC is a waste of time for these. I run a separate DC circuit but the switching approach is an excellent one if it works for you.
It's down to what you are comfortable with and how compatible the metal pantographs you have are with the model. If it's a direct replacement, go for it. If the swap is going to require modifications to the model then I'd make the call based on how challenging those changes will be and how experienced you are at such changes.
Hi, thank you for answering my question about adding a pantograph. I have the ‘Sir Steve Redgrave’ version plus a ‘Hornby Visitor Centre’ coach pack. I have a problem with it which is as follows. The six car set runs well when the power car is pulling but when the dummy car is at the front, the model struggles when traversing curves (3rd radius). With the power cat at the rear, it seems to push itself too close to the carriage and causes the wheels to slip and it cannot make the bend. Please can you advise me as to how to solve this? It’s a problem when sending the set to a siding and I want to return it to the main line. Thank you
@@davidjohnstone1705 Hi David, unfortunately lower power motors can tend to struggle more in push mode. My first port of call here would be to add ~150gm of weight to the power car as low down in the central part of the model as possible. The power car on these sets has historically been very light. Are the traction tyres still on your model?
@@davidjohnstone1705 Hi David, it sounds like you need them so leave them on. These, combined with the added weight in the power car should help give you the traction you need to be able the cars into the siding. The other thing I would check to be sure to be sure is that the axles on all of the cars are running smoothly and there isn't one that is not sitting correctly and giving you unwanted resistance. You could also do a quick check on the back to backs on those same axles.

Excellent. Glad it's running well for you. at £48 for the 2 car upgrade you can't go wrong. Thanks for sharing.
Another highly detailed and very useful review. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Like the new video .Very much.
Thanks for that.
Just picked up the coach pack from Hornby £48 plus delivery
Well worth the upgrade and a steal at that price!
i used to have one of the sir steve redgrave versions of this model, miss it.
While it's effectively a Railroad Plus model, I do like it as well. The traction tyres have to go though and are on my hitlist.
This looks great, I have the London Olympics one in white. Looks the exact same moulding.
First.
Yes, I believe they probably do come from the same tool. Hornby have been sweating this asset for a while!

Hi, would you recommend replacing the plastic pantographs with a set of metal ones which I have found on ebay?

Thank you again for taking the trouble to reply.
Yes they’re still - would advise removing them?
