My Favourite Models of 2024 incl. My Top Five, Honourable Mentions and Bargain of the Year
As with previous years, I have managed my purchases to avoid potentially poor models so thankfully I won't be covering any lemons or disappointing models, only my Top 5 for the year preceded by a number of honourable mentions.
The views expressed in this video are my own and I don't have a relationship with any of the manufacturers involved. While I have produced scores for each of these models based on my standard criteria, this list will be less based on those scores and more based on my own personal preferences and the models I got the most enjoyment out of during the year. This leaves the door open for lower cost models and perhaps less state of the art models.

00:46 - Bargain of the Year
02:04 - Honourable Mentions

In my last review I covered Hornby's very latest version of the original Era 7 Class 43 HST Train Pack. Now it's time to cover the very latest MK3 coaches to go with that HST. The original Class 43 HST in the iconic Yellow/Blue/Grey livery will forever have it's place in UK railway history. It's availability this year was too much to pass up and hence I took the plunge with a pre-order at a lower pricepoint than the current levels. So does this model live up to expectations and perform in line with what we have come to expect from a modern day Class 43 from Hornby. 0...

Hornby Class 800 Azuma Lighting Upgrade Revisited to Improve the Brightness and Stay Alive Time

In 2023, I did a video on the channel outlining a low cost and fully reversible coach lighting enhancement to the Hornby Class 800 series models. The enhancement delivered a bright and more prototypical coach lighting effect with a more accurate colour temperature. While I was initially happy enough with the result, I've become less so in recent months. It's time to go again and revisit the Cla...

    Love the model. Fitted decoder and sound to 805 obtained from Road & Rails. Access is an nightmare. The worst I have ever come across and I am approaching 400 locos. I have the special 70001 which came with sound. I hope Bachmann will do the two new liveries for the model.

    Came across this review, a couple of days after I received 3 of these coaches, I already have some short Hornby, scale length Lima and Joueff versions, but as you’ve said these are by far the best and I’m very pleased. Might even add a couple more, but my layout isn’t big enough to run a 7 car rake. …….Yet. 👍

    Wishing Jim Deegan and associates all the best in their great endeavours. One note of caution; the most important need for any rail preservation project is secure and weatherproof storage accommodation for locomotives and rolling stock. We can see in Dromod where all sorts of artifacts are acquired, diluting much needed care. In Moyasta we see ITG locos and coaches deteriorating in the sea air, covered only by tarpaulins. This of course is because Irish Rail evicted the ITG collection from Inchicore, which should have been retained as the nucleus of a national transport museum. In Carrick-on-Suir we see the 101 class Sulzer and a couple of G class locos covered in corrugated metal to resemble containers. Only the ex-C class 226? is under secure cover in the former goods shed. It is an absolute disgrace that the Irish government or Tipperary County Council could not facilitate suitable buildings. They even stipulated that any extension would have to match the rubble stone goods shed. Successive Irish governments have proved themselves to be philistines, devoid of any interest in our heritage. We have only managed to preserve the few treasures courtesy of Northern Ireland. We must thank Downpatrick & Co Down Railway for taking in two wonderful ITG locos, the RPSI with their workshop in Whitehead and the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Cultra, for hosting GSR no. 800, Maedb (Maeve) and an original Sulzer from 1951, Ireland's first diesel loco. Also, an original D&KR coach plus Donegal vehicles. Unless solid, secure storage is provided, vehicles will fall victim to the weather and/or vandals.

      I'd start with a thorough wheel clean. I've seen some residue even on new models. Given these are new models it's worth determining if it was even run in properly? If the model is running fine when it picks up speed then the other thing to check is the current draw. A steady speed should have a steady current draw. These models are heavy enough on juice even for a mid speed but if you are seeing anything over 400mA draw or you are see the current level varying wildly for a given %power setting, then that's a motor problem for sure.

    I bought one of the refurbished version. Have never been able to get the lights to work properly. The best I have achieved is 3 lit cars and the headcodes lit at both ends.I have put the middle 2 cars together in every possible combination and checked / changed all connecters but - to no avail. The instruction sheet is useless as the carriages depicted in it bear no resemblance to the carriages provided!! The model does not run well either being very jerky at slow speeds ( i.e.<4/28). Also I find the plain grey roof of the 4 cars very ugly and unrealistic. Strange Bachmann can do a realistic roof for its 2-car EMU's. But not this expensive model. Thus with me this model largely remains in its box. I can't find anything whatsoever about it to recommend.

    With regards to speakers, why didn’t you recommend the Accurathrash 8 ohm speaker? Works perfect with my HM7000 in this loco, not setup needed just plug and play.

    • @EuviRail
      @EuviRail 3 дні тому

      It comes from concerns over the power rating of the HM7000 decoder which is substantially less than the ESU decoders. I suffer from the trauma of burning out a few TTS decoders in the past due to overloading them. (ua-cam.com/video/flxKOP7JyKM/v-deo.html). I'd keep an eye on the overall current draw to make sure that it's not exceeding or running very close to the limits. Driving a high speaker load combined with high motor current could bring you close to the limits. I haven't fried a HM7000 yet but I've been using the Alpha Meter to make sure I stay within a reasonable overall current draw.

    My favourite models would be Accurascale Class 66, Cavalex Class 56, Bachmann 25 and 30, on the coaches the MK2B had I known how good they were I’d have purchased more. Completely agree that the heavily discounted Hornby MK3 and some of the retooled HST are great buys

    My best model of the year the Bachmann Class 117 dmu finally available in BR Blue, the sound is very realistic. Very pricey at £485 though. Bargains of the year: Heljan Class 33 at £105, and the stunning Heljan Class 07 at £99. Thanks for the videos, keep them coming.

    I only bought 5 locos all year - 2 of which were Accurascale 66s. I'd pre-ordered 66779 Evening Star early 2023 and when it arrived I was just blown away by it. The most perfect out-of-the-box new loco I've ever bought - it looked fantastic, had a top-quality feel and it ran perfectly straight from the box. Lifetime warranty and only £169. A joy to receive and a reminder of what the experience of buying a new locomotive should be. So pleased with it that I ordered the EWS liveried 66171 - and it was exactly the same enjoyable experience. It's a very positive reflection on our hobby as a whole that this is the standard of model locomotive that can be produced. Bravo Accurascale. Got the Hornby Class 67 Pullman pack as a present and I still rate the 67 loco as a hidden gem of the Hornby range and the Pullman coaches some of the most beautiful ready-to-run coaches in my collection.

    Great video as usual, i did buy a few new items last year, and some coincide with your own honorable mentions, a rake of Hornby's FGW (Fag Packet) MK3's at GBP19.95 each, another at GBP29.95 to complete the 'set', matched with my Heljan Class 57 "Pendennis Castle" at sub GBP100 also in late 2024, I agree with your appraisal, albeit having some negative feedback, I love it. Other faves sub GBP80 were two Dapol Class 73's in different liveries, and sub GBP120 I got two sound fitted Hornby Railroad+ Class 47 diesels, and a sub GBP110 a Hornby Railways Class 50 Diesel (I added a discounted HM7000), also a Heljan Class 33/2, factory weathered, and a Bachmann Class 24/1, both at sub GBP115. Steam hasn't missed out with an acquisition of a Bachmann factory weathered 3MT, and as recently as last week a Hornby King Arthur Class "Sir Martin Frobisher" both sub GBP120. When I typed this it shocked me in how much I spent in 2024, but then I realised by taking advantage of the sales (new) I saved in total, almost I much as I spent! I don't think that will be the case going forward into 2025, although my first purchase is another Heljan 57 in FGW/GWR Green livery for GBP95. OMG I love this hobby, Happy New Year for 2025 to all other railway modellers :) ...Drew

    Really good picks and honourable mentions, 2024 has seen some large forward leaps in what’s possible in model railways. I’m fascinated by them but I don’t have any of my own, which is probably a bit weird, but I’ve no wish for any. Vicariously railway modelling is enough for me and your channel, the way you show and review models is definitely a highlight. All the best for 2025!! P.S. with such leaps forward seen, I wonder if the Class 66 holds up for the decade with six more years of innovation? Certainly interesting to see.

    • @EuviRail
      @EuviRail 5 днів тому

      Thanks for that. Yeah, it will be interesting to see how the ACC 66 stacks up in a few years time. I think the issue I'm seeing is the increasing cost curve, so while the 66 may be surpassed, it will likely be by a much more expensive model when the time comes. It can also be difficult compare diesel and steam models.

    It would be nice if they could supply these coaches with passengers fitted. In my opinion it would definitely enhance the look of these models. They're nice looking coaches as they are, but with passengers fitted too they'd look even better. And how about a driver and co driver too for the power car?

    Eugene, another great video, & agree on the Accurascale Class 66. It's my favourite model/purchase of 2024. Looking forward to the Class 60's in coming months from both Accurascale and Cavalex. Preordered a couple from both. Battle of the 60's lets see which is the best. I was not as impressed with the Cavalex Class 56 as I was the Accurascale Class 66 so my money is on currently on the Accurascale model. I am sure others may have a differing opinion on this. Let's wait and see! Best bargin of 2024 was a Hornby Class 67 EWS livery 67016 the full all singing version which I got for £90 brand new. I really like this locomotive in real life and equally like the model. Also, I picked up a Bachmann Class 08 think it was around £70-75. brand new. It was the orange G&W livery version. Looking to make the move into DCC in 2025. Any advice as to the way I should go would be appreciated. I would like to go full DCC sound after watching your video's and other on YT. However, I cannot afford to chip my entire collection with sound decoders and speakers (My currently collection stands at around 90 diesel locomotives and 40 DMU's). Also some of the models date back 25 years or more so probably not worth chipping some of these locomotives. Looking forward to watching more of your videos in 2025 and wishing you a Happy New Year.

      Hi Jonathan, Many Happy Returns and thanks for sharing your picks. I had an earlier Class 67 EWS which I was happy with. In terms of DCC, I haven't spent a lot of time checking out the latest systems so worth checking UA-cam for such videos. I have to admit to being a fan of Hornby's HM7000 system. The decoders are more modestly priced than their ESU equivalents and I love the user experience. Even without DCC, these can be used on a DC system in Bluetooth mode. They are broadly compatible across all vendors though you do lose some of the lighting functions on the newer more complex models. You'll still need DCC in the long terms but any TXS decoder investment won't be lost and you can still use Bluetooth control on a DCC layout. It's probably worth auditing your non-DCC stock to consider whether to keep and chip or replace. I went through this process a number of years ago and once I could get a viable newer replacements I made the move over a few years (watch for the bargains!)

    • @jonathanmillar1975
      @jonathanmillar1975 5 днів тому

      @EuviRail I am looking at the NCE system as this would seem to be fairly simple and easy to expand and suits my needs. Read mixed views on the Hornby decoders and like the look of the ESU decoders, but as you said, they are expensive compared to others. I've already started auditing my collection and earmarked a lot of stuff to go in the next month or so. There are new versions of some of my older models like the Bachmann Class 158. I have 12 at present and probably paid only around £50-£75 for these back on the day and find it difficult to justify £270+ for the new version. Also, Bachmann has not re-released all the liveries I have and have not released a 3 car unit. I'm definitely going to move over to DCC this year. I just need to get my head around the financing of it.

    Hello again. HNY. Excellent models one and all in your 2024 list. Couldn't argue with the Top 5. My finger hovered over the "buy" button for Restormel Castle more than once (and even today, I have an opportunity to buy it at that mid-£80 price you mentioned from Rails, so who knows??), but I eventually went for Pendennis Castle, in retro GWR livery, which cost me a little more. I also bought a Heljan 33 for £99 from Kernow. My other bargain buys include an Accurascale Manor for just over £100 in their recent sale, and a Hornby Std 2MT from Kernow, also at just over £100. A couple of very keenly priced Bachmann 37s from Kernow were also purchased. Perhaps my favourite buy was the newly-tooled Hornby 9F at £149.95 from TMC. There were a few others, including a new but old tooled Bachmann B1, but at £85 it was too tempting, as was a new tooled V2 bought for £140 at the NEC show earlier in the year. Looking forward to enjoying more of your excellent content in 2025.

      Hi Nick, thanks for that. The ACC 37 is was top of my list for last year and I haven't had time with the Colas version I got this year due to a whole load of models dropping at the same time. The Cavalex 56 was probably my standout gap. My retooled HST purchases this year soaked up my budget. After some initial grief, my Acc 92s appear to running fine and I guess ACC have provided warranty assurances should problems occur so less concerned about them now.

    Nice looking coaches. The Mk3 is by far my fave British coach. I'm hoping for loco-hauled versions of this latest iteration to be announced for next year. If not, I may just pick up some HST versions (if I can find them!) and renumber. I realise there are detail differences between the HST and loco-hauled coaches but I could live with that (not least the lack of buffers!).

    The thing that annoys me about any HST release is that it is nearly always a WR set. As far as i know only one ER set has been produced other than the 'Farewell set' they did. They should have done a 70/80s set for ER layouts modeling this era.

    Very good models of a classic train set. The TGS coach didn't appear in HST sets on the GN mainline until Guards complained about the excessive noise in their office in the rear of the power car. Secondly the GN sets had a buffet and a restaurant coach. This making up the eight coach set. Two first class, Restuarant then Buffet car then four second class coaches. The official title of the TGS was Trailer Guard Second.

      I think you have your formations the wrong way round there, Eastern region HSTs had 8 coaches and sometimes 9 including in those rakes a 2nd buffet car replaced another coach on occasion, Western region had 7 but then was made to 8, this is just based on what I have seen photo wise of them in the Blue and Grey livery.

      I see, after driving HSTs on the Western Region in the 70s and 80s I think I have some idea of their formations, and our sets were always 8+2s. They may have ran as 7+2s if for some reason a car was removed.

      @@IainDavies-z2l British Rail considered the InterCity 125 sets to be diesel multiple units because they were fixed formation trains. They were allocated British Rail Class 253 (2+7 sets allocated to Western Region depots for use on Western Region and Cross-Country services) and Class 254 (2+8 sets allocated to the Eastern and Scottish Regions for use on the East Coast Main Line), the prototype train having been Class 252. Therefore, each set was allocated a set number (253 xxx or 254 xxx), which was carried on the front of the power cars. Individual vehicles were numbered in the 4xxxx series (see table below) and, because they were regarded as multiple unit vehicles, also had regional prefixes according to their allocated depot (E for Eastern Region, SC for Scottish and W for Western); this included the power cars as well as the trailers.

    How do the couplers work?

    • @EuviRail
      @EuviRail 11 днів тому

      The out of the box magnetic couplers are polarity sensitive so you need to check the orientation when fitting them. Once oriented correctly they will snap in place when aligned and coaches can separated using hand strength alone by just pulling them apart, no tools required. The vacuum pipe version I used between coaches A and B is not polarity sensitive and its' installation (hanging down) inherently orients it correctly. I'm overdue doing a video on Hornby's magnetic coupler range and what coach types they can be used with so thanks for asking.
