Sage, I love all of your videos...but one thing I wish you included? What are the songs/ music that are used... They are wonderful, and I'm not familiar with all of them.
This actually still very much exists in the modern day @sagelilleyman!😍 It's called "Catholic Courting" and I just absolutely looove it so much!! As well as the vintage dressing 👗👒!! You can find both traditions by googling "Traditional Latin Mass"! I think you'll be fascinated by it 😍💕
I was thinking the same for some time now! It makes it even better. Those videos make me feel emotional sometimes. You bring everything so gracious and you are very informative too. Thanks for all your great films! 💐💐💐💐💐
I do like some of the older date traditions. I've noticed with modern dating people are generally confused as to whether they are even on a date and I think it's because lines are so blurred between dating and just hanging out.
Listening to this whilst getting ready for my engagement dinner with my fiance. While I love that women have freedoms we didn't in the 50s, there seems to be something wholesome about those times that we lack today. Love your vids! ❤
My husband and I met on a blind group date two years ago in a bowling alley, knew we were going to get married by the second date at an ice cream parlor on day five, and we followed pretty much all of these traditional guidelines in dating. I think we waited to kiss until I was SURE I was going to marry him around month three? We're christians so that led to our dating convictions but I didn't realize how 1950s those guidelines were until watching this video! I have nothing but wonderful memories of our dating times!
Oh my gosh that's so romantic iam a Christian to that's how iam going to teach my son what to do when he's old enough to date he can't date girl unless she is a true Christian I mean church going very respectful in her appearance how she acts and treats her family
it seemed dating was more easier back then. nowadays its seems like we're so worried about getting ghosted, being stood up or catfished. if a guy called you, at least you knew he was interested in you and wanted to take you out on a date. whereas, today, a guy could ask you out on a dating app and never show up without a reason.
I remember some of these customs still being followed in the early 1980s. I wish they were still followed today 😕. I do like that girls can order for themselves, pay for themselves and they can ask the boy out. But, I wish the modesty and going steady would make a comeback. Nowadays, people seem to rush into physical relationships and don't take the time to get to know each other. Simple dates like dinner and a movie or just an evening walk allow time for talking and really getting to know each other. Just my opinion.
@Chaya Staub-Krell Yes, I completely agree. I love simple dates that allow you to talk. I even love just sitting on the couch with my fiancé with all electronics off. When we first started doing this, I thought we’d spend a half hour or so talking. But I find we talk for hours and hours when electronics are off. We’ll have to say, “Okay, last thing,” multiple times because the time gets so late.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s like it’s rushed before getting to know someone. How much prefer to get to know someone to talk for hours then to go really fast.

Even though I didn't start dating till the early 70's, I can say that this is all 100 % true. Hi Sage, What a wonderful video! We loved it. We really treasure you videos. My husband said to answer the movie question as "Airplane". All the Best from Oregon, USA
This is probably a big reason a lot of marriages from this era lasted better. I understand it was harder for a woman to leave and that affected things. There are a ton of old happy married couples though. Valuing a partner like this and building a relationship with intention to make it a real relationship is definitely a stronger foundation for long term.
Not trying to be argumentative but here are a few more reasons marriages likely "lasted better"... Things a woman couldn’t do in the 1950s Open a bank account in her own name Get a credit card in her own name Be guaranteed that they would not get fired for getting pregnant Take legal action against workplace sexual harassment Take the birth control pill
My husband opens the door for me still. My parents expected any man I dated to come and meet them before he picked me up for a date. They were married in the late 50's and have been married for 63 years now.
I've been reading lately that people say the good old days really weren't that good. Just MHO, I beg to differ. I'm an older lady and although not from the 1950s era, I did live through many interesting times and the comparison from foods, dating to clothing styles (or lack of clothing) seem so much more classy, decent, and just plain polite in the past. Not all new things are better than it used to be. That's exciting about the kitchen and can't wait to see it when it's finished. I didn't see the movie reference your husband said over the phone, but 'the captain ate the fish' line I *think* came from the movie Airplane.
I agree! Relationships were handled so much better back then. Modern dating has gone down in the dumps. It's SO hard to find a decent, solid man these days.
@@sofijones5048 I'd prefer my partner not to have a promiscuous past, just like I would imagine women generally would prefer a partner that has a decent job, his life together etc. Ofc, everyone is different so there are exceptions. I take it your not particularly bothered?
In Hispanic families this has not changed at all. Us girls need ample time, specially to let our parents know and get their permission. I live in the United States but I still expect my daughter to ask for permission with at least two or thee days in advance because this is how my family and culture is accustomed to 😁 also, a man paying for the meal is still a practice for us, is not well seen to see the woman paying 😊
Yep! I only have sons so they're being brought up just like this. Hispanic households don't play I demand my boys show 100% respect towards ladies. I'm raising gentlemen and they see their dad and grandpa lead the way 🥰
@@gmailsender7274 😳 false. If we act out in public that directly is an embarrassment to our parents. I can say a majority of Hispanic women think twice before acting a damn fool
We are not Hispanic, but we raised our sons and daughters very traditionally, and they found spouse's who were either also raised that way, or like my daughter in law, found she loved being treated like a lady and embraced it. I'm so happy to know there are entire cultures still following older dating traditions.
Aww how romantic! I loved this video, it was so sweet. The ad slid into the video quite subtlety! Tell James he did a great job being your date you're both adorable. I also love the places you went to, how vintage! My grandparents dated in the 50's, now I'm eager to ask them about it. And the movie reference was Airplane! :D
I just loved this video. What a great topic! I always look forward to Sunday to see your episode. The eras you cover has always fascinated me. It's been such a thrill to learn through your channel:)
Loved you two in this video! Some days, my husband does order for me at restaurants but that’s because I have a lot of social anxiety and sometimes can’t do it myself. 😅
When James was on the telephone I was thinking of the scene from It's a Wonderful Life when they're on the phone together. My parents dated in the 50s and married in the early 60s. They met in a teen club called Teen Town. They were married 60 years this year. Thank you for another wonderful video Sage and James. 💜
Wow; things changed quickly; My parents were teens in the 50's and when they tried to explain the rules to my sister in the 70's, she couldn't understand and did things the 70's way. Now she is a parent, she understands!!!
I wish we could have retained some of this stuff while still progressing on other things. It's a shame how some things have changed so much. This was a fun "look back". Thanks for sharing!
It honestly is a shame. Nowadays people have sex after two dates and move in with each other after a few months. Everything feels so rushed. Speaking as a woman, I wish more men had mannerisms and chivalry. Instead it’s “oh all I have to do is give her attention and I’ll get sex from her.” And this is coming from someone who was once part of “hookup” culture and have been with jerks from many walks of life. It’s sad there is a lack of gentlemen anymore.
I was surprised how similar this is to dating culture in my church, especially among teens! We would do a lot of group dates and friend dates, and usually waited to go steady until after high school, since we weren’t about to get married as teens. And the boy would come to meet the parents too! Though girls asking boys out, paying for meals and so on is completely fine as well, if less common.
Can I just say, that was the cutest and classiest way to include a sponsored product in YT video that I've ever seen! You embedded it as if it were an ad from the era. Brilliant and so well done!
I definitely would love it if some dating traditions were still in place, I love the idea of calling someone my "steady" and things like that, getting pinned. I love the whole idea of the guy coming to pick me up and calling me for a date, these things are adorable and I love this so much. I wish those things were still in place today
James was so funny. 😂 Thank you, Sage, for all of your wonderful videos. I’m learning so much. I’m from Texas. I love the 1940’s. Although my hair isn’t thick enough or long enough for the beautiful hairstyles, I enjoy watching how you style your own. The red tone of your hair is so beautiful. I’ve always wanted red hair. You have a blessed day, Sage and James. ❤
This was a great video and I like when James is in your videos and plays along. Things are still this way if you "demand" it (i.e. don't settle for less). My partner is very old fashioned and I love it. Finding him wasn't easy but I didn't settle for less. Can't wait for your next video! :)
Thank you so, so much for sharing the 50's with us. It's so much fun watching you and James show us. I made my first German chocolate cake. I'm so proud of myself! Unfortunately it's not from the 50's. Thank you again and continue doing such a fantastic job. P.s. I did scorch my 1st batch of coconut frosting. The second was much better do to me being patient. Take care and lots of hugs.
Sage, I just had to let you know...I just got my Function order...only 6 days!!! Wow! I LOVE, LOVE LOVE it! I got the Lavender and it’s amazing! Now I want to order the Rose too! Thank you for this!
Those of us who are old enough will remember the standard date refusal excuse - 'Sorry, I'm washing my hair that night.' Hard to do in an age where people wash their hair everyday!
@missanne290 I also think it’s funny that your generation only seemed to wash their hair at night. I guess it’s because of using rollers or pin curls. But as someone who wears 1950 hair styles (and clothes) I know it’s possible to do a wet set and blow dry over it. This way your curls are done in an hour, and you don’t need to sleep in your rollers. It also allows you to wash your hair during the day lol. Were blow dryers very expensive in the 50’s? Maybe that’s the reason women didn’t do this more.
I absolutely loved this video!! Splendid job to you both!! 🥰 I wish that's how dating (or courting) took place nowadays. Maybe one day it will go back to that, hopefully. 🙏😇 It was soo sweet, simple and still romantic. 😍
Love seeing james in this video! More please. Love seeing you guys doing the episodes together. Definitely bring back the 1950s dating etiquette! I really think we need to.
Oh I’m so glad this video was a day late, I just popped onto UA-cam thinking there’d be nothing to watch and I was wrong! This was such a cute video, I love that James gets into it as well! I agree with a lot of the other comments. While we do enjoy some freedoms that are wonderful, I do think wistfully of the intention that was displayed in the 50s. I agree, I think the concept of going steady should make a comeback indeed!!
this was such a fun video! i love how much you research to make a truly thorough dive into your videos. i'm also glad that we can pick which aspects of other eras to follow and leave others behind- thankfully now women can order their own food without being seen as brash!
This was fabulous!!! I would love to have been a teen during that era. When I was a teen couples all got together at someone's house and got drunk. 😔 Not my cup of tea at all. While some progress is good, I think some of the traditions of the past are worthy of holding on to. P.S. James did a GREAT job!
Thankyou for sharing this. I'm in my early 20s and I can tell that dating really has changed so much since then. But, from some of the older TV shows I've seen/love, dating also didn't seen to be much different either, than today. Like for instance, in 1957 the guy would drive up in his light blue car with a couple other friends, and say to the girl, "Hey Judy, wanna go out"? She'd tell her parents she'll be back in a few hours, and that be it. In most families, it was required that they would let the parents know where they were going, but sometimes they didn't. Nowdays a lot of teens/college aged kids just say "I'll be back soon", and most parents won't know what their kid is up to. The way couples dress today is way more casual, or sloppy than back then. It was a way to show proper manners, bit of maturity, and cleanliness when a guy and girl got cleaned up before they went out back in the 40s-70s. That's why I love the 50s and 60s the most, and want to dress from that era more often. One other thing that a lot of kids my age on down to about 13 today would consider themselves together, would be to say that they're "talking". It wasn't really official until the guy ask the girl to be his girlfriend, but all their friends would see them as boyfriend and girlfriend way before that. Some, like my younger sister and her new boyfriend would give each other a necklace, or bracelet to say that they're "together", or "getting more serious". Kind of like "pinning", but not as common. I'm so thankful to grow up where my parents want the guy to ask them first before he ask me on a date. My parents even know that dressing nice is also a good sign of maturity, and it also gives the other person a good impression of who you are. I'm a Christian, and even in my stage of life where I'm not dating yet, I still want to have a good Godly testimony wherever I go, and want others to see Christ in me. It will one day show a guy that she has more to offer, than not having manners, not dressing nice, or not being put together. Times sure have changed a lot since the 40s-70s, but I think that if a guy and girl have good manners/respect around each other, it can do so much, and help for a good and healthy relationship to last for a long time.
LOVE this so much!!! You two are the sweetest couple on the internet! Love that James is dressing so dapper now. You have a handsome fellow. And your old timey feel to the "commercial" for function of beauty was epic!

Not all new things are better than it used to be. That's exciting about the kitchen and can't wait to see it when it's finished. I didn't see the movie reference your husband said over the phone, but 'the captain ate the fish' line I *think* came from the movie Airplane.
I thought I'd be the only person who got the line about the fish! 😆
I agree! Relationships were handled so much better back then. Modern dating has gone down in the dumps. It's SO hard to find a decent, solid man these days.
@@MonicaRoseKinney The same goes for finding a woman who hasn't slept around a whole lot
@@stormcaster6322 Why is this an issue?
@@sofijones5048 I'd prefer my partner not to have a promiscuous past, just like I would imagine women generally would prefer a partner that has a decent job, his life together etc. Ofc, everyone is different so there are exceptions. I take it your not particularly bothered?
I LOVED all the rules!!!! We need to bring them back especially the pins!!! 💖😌 Another Fabulous video!!! 👌
I have always traded promise rings to anyone I was very serious with :) I think people still do that
@@sarahh2072 Awwww...that is SOOO Sweet!!! 💖 I've NEVER been on a date before and I'm in my early 20's. 😔
So true!
@@gmailsender7274 false
Omg yes absolutely! I prefer the 1930's and 40's, but even so I have to watch Sage, she's just so sweet and helpful.
I love that sponsor promo haha. It was so cute! I love how your husband helped out.
This video was adorable!! Would love to see more about dating through the ages. And I think the movie reference was Airplane!
Wow; things changed quickly; My parents were teens in the 50's and when they tried to explain the rules to my sister in the 70's, she couldn't understand and did things the 70's way. Now she is a parent, she understands!!!
I've seen the original video but it was very nice that you did a video based around this subject!
I wish it was still like this
I have been waiting all day for this XD
Oh my gosh the vintage commercial! I love when UA-cam creators find creative ways to include their sponsors.
Instead it’s “oh all I have to do is give her attention and I’ll get sex from her.”
And this is coming from someone who was once part of “hookup” culture and have been with jerks from many walks of life.
Omg the sponsor ad is adorable!!!!
Thank you so much! 💕
Hi Sage. I think dating was alit better back then than what it is now. Perhaps we should go back to that type of dating. Marie
💕💕💕💕 We need this back.
In the 1980s we were often "promised" instead of pinned. Mine was a little gold ring with a heart. 40+ years later, have the same ring and man❤
in our area, it was a 'ankle bracelet' with a heart and pearls that was worn around the neck with an extender :--)
Soooo cute. Simpler times. Thinking "Pam n Jim" from The Office as 50's teens. Great video! Thank you.
That's a clever way to insert your product ad 😂
loved the video and that ad was placed perfectly really old-time ad vibe and you and James are so cute I hope you have a nice rest of your day
Can I just say, that was the cutest and classiest way to include a sponsored product in YT video that I've ever seen!
Aw thank you so much! ☺️💕
I loved this video!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you so much for researching this topic. I wish dating were still like this now a days.
This was a great video and I like when James is in your videos and plays along. Things are still this way if you "demand" it (i.e. don't settle for less). My partner is very old fashioned and I love it. Finding him wasn't easy but I didn't settle for less. Can't wait for your next video! :)
That was great Sage! So much fun. And your hubby was great too!
I love this video! So cute. The ad blended right in, too.
I wish all those ways of going steady would come back , when gentlemen & ladies were different and more modest.
I 100% agree with you
Sage, I just had to let you know...I just got my Function order...only 6 days!!! Wow! I LOVE, LOVE LOVE it! I got the Lavender and it’s amazing! Now I want to order the Rose too! Thank you for this!
Ohhh yayyy!!! ❤️
@sage it really does make your hair super soft! I was really surprised! I’ve found my new fav!
Those of us who are old enough will remember the standard date refusal excuse - 'Sorry, I'm washing my hair that night.' Hard to do in an age where people wash their hair everyday!
That's awesome and funny!
@@findingbeautyinthepain8965 Blowdryers weren't that common in those days outside salons..
I absolutely love the way you did the sponsor!!! Also i love this video.
I absolutely loved this video!! Splendid job to you both!! 🥰 I wish that's how dating (or courting) took place nowadays. Maybe one day it will go back to that, hopefully. 🙏😇 It was soo sweet, simple and still romantic. 😍
So different from today... Lovely times.
Thank You Sweetie for the wonderful video.
Lots of love!
💝💝💝
The movie reference is from '!Airplane'... and stop calling me Shirley! ... So lovely that James played along on this, he's adorable! Lots of love!
this was such a fun video! i love how much you research to make a truly thorough dive into your videos. i'm also glad that we can pick which aspects of other eras to follow and leave others behind- thankfully now women can order their own food without being seen as brash!
Such a cute video! I agree, "Going Steady" needs to come back!
Loved this video, Sage! Really liked the way you included your sponsor in the video too, very creative (and your hair looks so good!)
I love videos like this, they're so interesting
Made a my day. Thank you🌻
What a fun and well made video! Your content is always so sweet and entertaining! Thank you for the effort you put into your videos.
I love these videos! Thank you so much for sharing! ♥️♥️♥️👒💝💄👠👗🧣👛👜🕶💼
Great video! Love the Airplane! Reference at the end
Thanks so much! 😊
This channel is so WHOLESOME I love it! It brings back good memories of my grandparents ❤️
I loved the detail thank you sooo much for all of the effort put into this and Michael helping is so kind you both are a beautiful couple!
Nice ad placement. 😄 I love function of beauty!
James is so lovely and very talented, in both acting and voiceovers!
I absolutely loved this video, Sage! I think it's my favourite one yet. Amazingly done! ❤
This was definitely worth the wait; well done!🤗🤗😁
Oh thank you so much! 💕
Thank you so much for the 10 minute smile 😊. What an adorable video.🌹❤️🌹
Thank you for your videos! You are just a delight! Happy Thanksgiving to you & James! Hope you have a wonderful holiday!
loved your mini commercial for function of beauty! Loved it! so original!
LOVE this so much!!! You two are the sweetest couple on the internet! Love that James is dressing so dapper now. You have a handsome fellow. And your old timey feel to the "commercial" for function of beauty was epic!
