I am absolutely in love with 18th century fashion, especially when it comes to the men's fashion. It's all so beautiful, and it's just a shame that there are far less videos on historical men's fashion compared to women's.
It might be because "fashion" is seen as a feminine pursuit or a feminine passion. Even though, last I checked, men still give a crap about what they wear.
Mens fashion in the 18th century for your commoner was very different from this, stockings were heavy knit wool, breeches would've be made from heavy cloths like canvas and wool, same with the waistcoat and coat, no wig. And nothing would've matched.
His sassyness is probably one of the reasons I might decide to go back in time and insult a gentleman by snatching his wig 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 imagine the reaction 🤣
The man portraying the high-class arrogant gentleman, did such a phenomenal job at staying in character, I was actually getting pissed off for no reason. Acting at its finest.
You could move to the United States where everyone is arrogant and snobbish. All you have to do is visit new York or California and you will be surrounded by such people on a daily basis. But for someone as beautiful and stunning as you I would highly recommend a security team. You don't want men running to you for attention. God you're beautiful.
Yes, you are right, but if you look at his hands, while he buttoning his breeches, you can see that he was somewhat nervous/self-concious to be examined like that...
I wouldn't say "spoiled" but definitely entitled. Today, rich people act like this everywhere, totally unaware that others live differently. He's just better looking and classier. Imagine Bill Gates getting dressed with his man's boobs! 😄😃😄 Bezos would look better, and so would Elon.
When some people say they wish they had lived long ago, I just roll my eyes. Give me a Tshirt, cargo pants and sandals. Accessories? oh yeah..my wallet if I leave the house.
Julian Bruck, When I was very young, I remember women did not leave the house without a hat and gloves. My grandfather would never think of walking out of the door without his hat. Your comment brings back sweet memories of my GrandDad looking for his hat as he was heading for the door:)

They needed to complete it with the sword, cane, and monocle. Maybe a shirt with a watch bob and have them taking a stroll down the empty streets and closed out retail because everyone's left that part of city.

A lot of people tend to over exaggerate the poverty in these eras or in Britain. Yes it was bad but only in certain areas. Kinda like Chicago with the south side and then up North is more luxurious.
@Nix A LOT of this generation (my generation) could do with a more involved routine quite honestly. Do you know how many men today have the sourest of looks when it comes time to shave? And that's a 2 min job with canned goo and 5 blades of unsatisfaction. I take 6-7 mins to do a 3 pass shave with either my straight razor or DE razor. Significantly better results and I take pride in it.
They ran the country. They built the world you and the rest of us all pose in now. Have some respect for your antecedents. Or make something better. If you can do neither hold your tongue.
They may have run the country, but they didn't build anything. The work was done by other people who had just as much potential to be great except they were born in the wrong class. That's what we must remember about these 'great' men - others could have done great things as well, but their talents were suppressed and their labor exploited in the name of 'nobility'. Athletes aren't expected to compete with steroid abusers; let's not compare our accomplishments to human rights abusers'.
@@pendlera2959 I think it's not as simple as either "the aristocrats did nothing" or the "the aristocrats built everything". It largely depended on the individual, just as most things in life!
“I was twenty-four - younger than you are, now - but times were different, then. I was a man at that age. The master of a large plantation, just south of New Orleans.”
Tbh this is closer to Lestat's attitude and style. Louis would just wear something simple in brown and black while brooding over how guilty he feels that someone is helping him get dressed - if he asked for help at all.
Check out some videos of the mid 1970's. Ruffled shirts made a comeback for formal wear for a brief time. Your father's prom photos, if you live in a country which knows what "prom" means.

Love this, you can really see the evolution from this to the modern three-piece suit. I love 18th century menswear, who am I kidding, I love all 18th century fashion! 😁 thanks for the great content.
You do not say thanks to a servant for ordinary things. That is for what he is there. If he saves your life in a battle, then you say it and give him a duchy.
Since the upper class and nobility were waited on hand and foot they would have been saying thank you a hundred times a day. So they didn't. Besides as far as they were concerned it was beneath them to speak to people who were not of their station
The actor really carries himself gracefully when he's full dressed, especially standing by the window at the end. Exactly how I'd picture an 18th century aristocrat to be. Interesting video.
Hilarious acting and snobbery aside...it is truly amazing how the clothing looked. So elegant and high quality. Indicative of the times, as ones clothes were one of the few symbols of wealth. Today is somewhat the same, but we have many other material items such as cars and phones to show off 😅
this is super interesting! we always hear about what the ladies wore but so little about the men. the detail about the linen shirt tucking around the groin so underwear wasn't necessary was really interesting, as well as the presence of knee-bands! i knew gentlemen wore garters on their stockings in many periods, much like ladies, but i didn't know it ever differed!
Gross and uncomfortable. Imagine a shirt flap getting into the buttcrack and bunching up there. Would feel like the mother of all wedgies. And imagine how dirty the shirt edge would be after a day of wearing. Skid marks on a shirt...
A true gentleman must also be confident, cultured and cordial. He must also smell good, not just looks good !! He exudes charms, charismas and leadership !!
I own an American style late 18th-century suit (circa 1780) that I had professionally made, using the greatest degree of historical accuracy possible, but without requiring that it be hand-sewn. It's brown wool with a yellow cotton waistcoat, and I wear it with a black tricorn hat. All the pieces are worn exactly as described in this video. It does take a while to get dressed, but not really much more than getting formally dressed in a modern day suit. Though I don't wear it often, it is fun to wear -- and I know I look good based on my wife's behavior towards me when I'm wearing it. If you have roughly $500 lying around and you don't know what to spend it on, I highly recommend acquiring one.
That guy really got into his role. I love how it looks like he's just arrogantly looking down at the lower class gardeners maintaining his garden at 5:00 XD
"Ah yes, the peasantry are at their labour. All is satisfactory on the estate. I am feeling handsome; mayhap I shall vote to tax those colonists some more later, I know not"
Not at all. Changing undergarment was very important for basic hygiene. While they bathed much less than we do, they changed underwear surprisingly frequently. Contrary to modern belief cleanliness was of serious importance, particularly for better off people. Changing the shirts was the basic means of avoiding body fluids and therefore strong smells. They didn't like stinking, just like we do not like now.
@@Molach101 You are really wrong. They did change and although hygiene was different, it was taken seriously. There are a lot of misinformation circulating regarding this topic.
I have fallen in love with the puffy-sleeves-and-tight-torso setup. As a female in theater, I have found that plus a cape to be ridiculously fun to wear.
Make a video of 18th century military uniforms and getting dressed would have been like for someone like Lord Nelson or Lord Wellington or General Cornwallis.
Lord: Oh must I Byron? The ball will be ever so frightfully dull. Butler: I'm afraid so my Lord, your uncle the Duke impressed the import of this auspicious occasion for your cousin's return from the New World.
Gah, this all looks so amazing... I hope to have at least one full ensemble like this one in my closet by the time I'm 30. What I wouldn't give to have a wardrobe full of these fine suits!
1700's: I need to make sure I look like a respectable gentleman before I go in public. 2020: i put on my clean sweat pants to go to Walmart. What more do you want!!!

All ready for a gentleman's difficult work of posing next to the window.
At the end of the video he walked away from the window. Guess the King had summoned all aristocrats in the realm to gather at his court...
They ran the country. They built the world you and the rest of us all pose in now. Have some respect for your antecedents. Or make something better. If you can do neither hold your tongue.
@@thegreenmage6956 😁 that is some tongue lashing 🤣
They may have run the country, but they didn't build anything. The work was done by other people who had just as much potential to be great except they were born in the wrong class. That's what we must remember about these 'great' men - others could have done great things as well, but their talents were suppressed and their labor exploited in the name of 'nobility'. Athletes aren't expected to compete with steroid abusers; let's not compare our accomplishments to human rights abusers'.
@@pendlera2959 I think it's not as simple as either "the aristocrats did nothing" or the "the aristocrats built everything". It largely depended on the individual, just as most things in life!

You do not say thanks to a servant for ordinary things. That is for what he is there. If he saves your life in a battle, then you say it and give him a duchy.
@Katherine Scanlon You don't have to be polite with your servants.

Today is somewhat the same, but we have many other material items such as cars and phones to show off 😅
But they had carriages and snuff boxes.
this is super interesting! we always hear about what the ladies wore but so little about the men. the detail about the linen shirt tucking around the groin so underwear wasn't necessary was really interesting, as well as the presence of knee-bands! i knew gentlemen wore garters on their stockings in many periods, much like ladies, but i didn't know it ever differed!
Gross and uncomfortable. Imagine a shirt flap getting into the buttcrack and bunching up there. Would feel like the mother of all wedgies. And imagine how dirty the shirt edge would be after a day of wearing. Skid marks on a shirt...
The butler puts on my pants, one leg at a time, just like everyone.

18th century men fashion is amazing

Karen K I agree. I especially like the ruffles. I'm not really sure why. They just look so fancy.
Not to mention a lack of water on tap. Your servant would probably have to fetch it from the estate well or local river. @@Molach101
