Great reaction guys!
Basically this song is a poem sung in second book of The Fellowship Of The Ring by Gimli but not shown in movies. Do since it talks about the first Dwarf to wake up after creation and became their first king it is fitting that we are in tomb of Balin in Moria and the Ghosts of Thorin Killi Filli and Bofur (from the Hobbit movies) show up to sing along

Geoff got the inspiration for this version from Clamavi De Profundus.
Stubbled Geoff is Kili, I think the one to the very far left is fili and the one to the very right is Bofur.
Although we know the dwarf in the center is meant to be Gimli and the set is definitely Balin's tomb in Moria, going just by the costume, yeah, it easily could have been Gloin--they resembled each other and wore the same helmet.
I've been thinking since this came out, one of the things that sets Tolkien's work apart from its many imitators is the longing that suffuses the entire canon--just about everybody was yearning for something, whether it was places or times, people or objects, but for most of them that thing would be forever out of reach. And this cover captures that perfectly.
Speaking of the references to Elven cities, this cover made me realize something in the books I never caught before despite having read them many times: when Galadriel greeted Gimli in Lorien, she quoted parts of this song to him, but from the Elves' point of view, referencing "the fall of mighty kings beneath the stone." It's no wonder he fell in love with her right then and there. XD

The one with the bow was Kili. He fell in love with the Elf Tauriel. Fili is the one with the braided mustache. Then we have the one on the end is Bofur. Loved the reaction guys!! VoicePlay comes out with a new one on Friday!!

Isn't it just so elegant in its presentation? The harmonies with the production value is just off the charts. I love the fact that it was no super low notes.

While Geoff does an initial mix on the audio (since he has to be able to harmonize with himself), the final audio mix is done by Ed Boyer, who is well known as an audio engineer for a cappella groups. Ed also does the final mixes for both Pentatonix and VoicePlay, and has done them for Home Free, although I'm not sure if he still does the mixes for Home Free or not.
As they had to film the dwarves in order of complicared hair work and many times the differnt characters sing only a single line here, Kathy had ger hands full in remind Geoff for each separate lite while filming which character hes eas so that he would look in the right direction, towards the others.
This made me go back and start a rereading again. Currently leaving Lothlorien in a small boat, looking back at Galadriel.

Kili was also an archer (evidently that's how he lost his facial hair), and Fili with the braided facial hair are Thorin's "sister sons" or "my father's daughters son's" that died protecting him "with sword and body" at The Battle of the Five Armies (don't get me started on the movie) and ending Thorin's line as Fili was his heir to the throne.. The other with the curled mustaches would be Bofur the only one the four of these that survived. He may have been still been alive the time Gimli sang this poem. It has been a while since i read all these books and this is making me want to drag them out again. So anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. Great reaction. I love what he did with this.
I’m pretty sure those of us who are Tolkien fans are either rereading the books or, as in my case I can’t find my books🙁, listening to the audio version. I thought I knew the stories fairly well but reading the comments has informed me that I am sadly deficient!

Ed Boyer does the mixing and he’s basically a hidden member of VP and Geoff. The authenticity he shows is always amazing. Geoff’s wife Kathy does a lot of costuming.
This one is amazingly great and my favorite of the Geoff trilogy! Gimli starts this off, Durin's folk appeared to keep Gimli company before they disappeared. VoicePlay dropped Be Prepared at noon today! Do that one too! VoicePlay dropped BePrepared at noon today. Mykal is the guest vocalist who was one of the original members before he took off for Broadway.
I especially loved the little medieval flourish of notes Geoff added at the point when the light first turns gold (golden roofs & silvered floor). It picks the song up from more funeral dirge to bardic entertainment - giving that small section a more uptempo feel. Geoff based this off of the music written by Clamavi De Profundis to set Tolkien's poem/song to actual music, but they did not have those flourishes. That song had the sad dirge sound, but actually got a bit repetitive, despite the way they moved from one singer to another. It was ALL dirge without the feel of when Days were Glorious for the dwarves.
