      They met while he was still in high school. His chorus teacher was Kathy's dad. Geoff made an IG post near Christmas, reflecting how he's spent every December with Kathy since he was 17. His first paid gig as a singer was in a Dickens Carolers group that Kathy was also in.

    I am happy to have you again. To me, VoicePlay breaks Minister Frollo's character into the 4 singers - from Geoff who starts with his purer thoughts than others (who else am I better than). J None calls out for Maria to protect him, Eli with his basest desires, be mine or burn, Cesar in blaming God for this situation. Finally they collapse into one person, Geoff who finishes it off. I think this is stunning, mesmerizing, evil and absolutely unforgettable.

They just feel satisfying. But because I don't know much about music, I have a hard time figuring out why they're different and what they are doing. I'd recommend their Wicked Medley. I think you'd really enjoy it, to me it's probably the best arranged song Voiceplay has ever put out. It apparently took Geoff over three years to complete the arrangement, and I think it's one of their most underrated songs, barnone.

    I really like that you're doing some research into the original songs that are being covered - I know some reactors don't want to do that to avoid "contaminating" their reaction, but I think it makes a reaction a lot more interesting when the reactor can compare between the original and the song as it is being covered currently. I hope you don't get any negative feedback about it, and that you continue to do that research.
    VoicePlay have done an excerpt from Hellfire several years ago in one of their Disney medleys, with Geoff singing Frollo's part as he did here. He resisted doing the full song for a while, as he didn't like the character and felt it was a very dark song (and he wasn't wrong in any of that!). But Layne apparently convinced him to do the song - and of course, Geoff absolutely nailed it!
    I still have some trouble believing that this song came out of a Disney animated "children's" movie from more than 25 years ago - it is just SOOO much darker (perhaps because it's more realistic) than any of their other villain songs.
    While Geoff's ending notes are relatively high for a bass singer (IMO), he's still got a way to go before he hits his upper range limit (at least, so far!), which he did in a VoicePlay mini/short of "Peaches" from the Mario Bros. movie. I believe it's an A5 (perhaps A#5?). Yes, it's a rock-tenor scream, but still pretty darned amazing!
    Speaking of VoicePlay shorts, that is something you might consider - since the shorts are all only about a minute long, and don't cover the entire song, you might be able to go through several of them at a time, and see how their changing lineup affects their sound.

    • @MaKettle111
      @MaKettle111 Місяць тому +1

      It was an A#5. They announced that he could now sing that high at the beginning.
      Also, Geoff was singing all those high notes in chest voice. Even though he uses subharmonics for the really low notes most of this song is sung in chest voice.
      As for his subharmonics he holds a Bb0 for 4 slow measures at the beginning of Valhalla Calling. That would be a great one for you to analyze.
      Love your analysis in all of your reactions I’ve watched. And I really like how you compare it to the original.
      And I agree with all of the comments I’ve read. But no one has mentioned your easy to listen to voice and super cool accent. 😎

      @SirHairless  Місяць тому +2

      Thanks! I think it's near-imperative to know at least some of the context beforehand...at least if really wanting to know the *why*sWhy each musical decision was made etc
      Apparently this song nearly resulted in the film not being suitable for kids and receiving an age restriction!
      Oo shorts could be a good idea - they've not been recommended to me before

I could read music and played the piano (like paint by numbers), but I didn't know about chords, major or minor, or any of the rest of it. Whenever I listen to one of your reactions/analysis videos, a lot of it goes over my head because I have no musical training but I pick up a little more each time. It really helps when you show some of what you’re talking about on the piano keyboard. When I do learn something new it adds to my appreciation of the piece.
    A few things I’ve caught: I listened to the karaoke track, and discovered that they used more Latin from the Catholic mass as background. It is difficult to catch during the performance because usually everybody’s so caught up with Geoff’s vocals. When you mentioned Layne’s percussion during the spoken portion, the others were chanting “gyp-sy es-caped” with that same percussive beat.
    In the outro you can really hear that doom doom doom doom that is in the beginning of this song and it always reminds me of bells tolling which is appropriate since the piece is centered around the cathedral of Notre Dame.

    If you're interested in getting a feel for his upper range, that's a good one. Also any of his solo pieces are good, too. He sings ALL the parts in those pieces, and he covers his bass range all the way up to high tenor in those. And of course, his solo work is just wonderful on it's own already, too. :)

    I'm so curious to watch you analyse some of Geoff's solo works... Just about an hour ago I was watching for the 100th time his latest "full length video" release, "Unshaken", which kind of showcases the insane width of his range. But I'd also love to hear your analysis of his two covers of songs from "The Hobbit", which are, in chronological order, "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" and "I see fire"... I'm really in love with those two songs, maybe for being a huge Tolkien fan (the books.... Not the movies).
    Thank you for analysing this one, and see you next time! 🙂

    I'm pretty sure Geoff is doubled for some of the bass line, but I also think Layne is doing some of it via ingressive phonation (like when he says 'Burn it'). It's hard to figure out exactly who is doing what in this one. They frequently will double Geoff when he is singing lead (and others too)

    I think you’ll find that it’s Layne’s arrangements that have more rhythmic complexities. Also, since he’s realized how much the fans want it, his arrangements are more apt to include a solo line or two by Layne. Other’s arrangements tend to only have him beatboxing, or not to really feature him even if he is singing.

    Thank you for this VP reaction. Although the company which controls Geoff’s solos won’t monetize your reaction, I will join the chorus asking for it. I’ll go against the crowd begging for one of his hits and ask for “Shenandoah.” It opens with Geoff simply playing the piano & singing before building quietly. It’s sung simply beautifully while being musically complex - without either quality compromising the other.

    I've listened to this version of Hellfire many times (either on my own or with reactors) and I seem to be the only one who has noticed an oddity. After the jailer reports that Esmerelda is missing, Frollo reacts (in the original Disney movie) "I'll find her! I'll find her if I have to burn down all of Paris!" But Geoff says: "I'll find her! I'll find her and I'll find her if I have to..." It's a small thing, but it catches my ear EVERY time I hear it, and either other people don't "hear" it, or I guess they just don't feel it's worthy of mention, which makes me feel like a real nit-picker!

    • @thisismetoday7423
      @thisismetoday7423 Місяць тому +1

      I noticed it but didn’t care. The wording of the cloaked figure is a little different too. I don’t think they are mistakes but just them changing it a bit to fit the flow and rhythm of what they are doing. They like making things their own.
