Repairing a bunch of Hikoki and Metabo HPT NR1890DC nails guns. Problem is, they won't fire nails

  • I only ever get a maybe one of these guns in a month, but these last 2 weeks have been crazy, cannot keep up with the amount of tools coming in.
    Ended up with 3 of these guns needing fixed this week, all NR1890DC guns from 2019. So may as well do them all at once.
    The problem is normally always. They won't fire nails or won't sink the nails.
    If they won't sink the nails home. It simply needs re pressurised.
    But if they won't shoot the nails at all or won't start up, that's is when the fun really starts. It could be any number of problems, so the only thing to do is crack it open and have a look.
    As nail guns go, I'm hearing very good things on these hikoki or metabo htp guns. Anyone who has bought them seems to alway give the same feedback. Powerful guns, sinks every nail, very reliable, and when they do fail and need to be dropped in for repair, the customers normally pick up a new one anyway before they leave anyway
    They are that happy with them.
    But they also give the same downside, very heavy, and have a massive stupid rafter hook on the side.

    Worth noting with these hikoki guns… with a certain combination of button presses on the on button and mode selector buttons… they go into ‘service mode’ and won’t fire but flash…. The problem is when the gun doesn’t fire the user presses all the buttons and tries everything and ends up in this mode by accident and it’s another combo of presses to get it out of it….. if you know you know. if your Youl think it’s knackered. hope this helps someone..

    Hikoki guns are unreal. Outperform the paslodes easily and only slightly behind the Milwaukee in power but doesn’t weigh anywhere near as much as that hefty unit.

    I was waiting for this one. I'm a Bosch user, but Hikoki nail guns are some of the best in my opinion. I own the 1890 and the 16Ga. Never had any problems with them. Sometime ago I bought the refill service tool so I don't have send it to a repair center. I really enjoy watching your videos, they're very educational and since I do maintenance and repairs on my tools it's always a great opportunity to learn! Thanks.

    Thanks for the excellent vids Dean. Inspired by this one I had a go at fixing my sons NR1890DC. It powered up ok with both blue and green LEDs on but absolutely nothing happened when you pulled the trigger. Took it apart to have a nosey and test the trigger switch. No problems found. As I was putting it back together noticed a small white plastic rivet below the depth adjuster had fallen out of place. Turns out its magnetic and I'm guessing its for the hall effect sensor it that position. temporarily siliconed back in position pending obtaining a replacement and hey presto! all working. thanks again. So the story I heard was that when Hitachi sold off Koki power tools(Koki holdings), and Koki changed their power tool line name to Hikoki, Lowe's had a big problem with this and didn't want to sell the tools under that name. Lowe's is Hikoki's only national distributor in North America, and somehow they came up with a compromise of "Metabo hpt."
    Lowe's used to sell German Metabo power tools in their stores, and still do on their website, so maybe they figured their customers would be more familiar with that name.

    • @robertrada4783
      @robertrada4783 8 місяців тому

      People who buy tools from Lowes don’t know what Metabo is. Which is a problem when they’re googling the internet for batteries and/or cordless tools. They’re also doing every manufacturer on CAS a major disservice. “Yeah you just go buy some Metabo batteries and you can run our tool with it.” Cut to: customer buys Metabo “HPT” batteries. It’s fucking joke.

    • @bladeoflucatiel
      @bladeoflucatiel 8 місяців тому

      They shouldn't even changed the name in the first place. I didn't even know hitachi and hikoki/metano hpt used the same batteries until a few months ago

    • @onikwa
      @onikwa 8 місяців тому +1

      Fucking Lowe's is such a joke. They have a serious lack of professional power tools and they still try their hardest to push out the ones they do have. Hikoki would be a great Makita replacement for Lowe's but between the stupid name change and the shitty state of Lowe's displays across North America it's hardly picking up any steam. The only companies that put up with Lowe's shit anymore is Stanley black and decker and Flex since chevron has infinite money to waste on Lowe's bullshit.

    • @histguy101
      @histguy101 8 місяців тому +1

      @@bladeoflucatiel They couldn't keep the Hitachi name, because Hitachi(large media conglomerate) sold Koki(power tool manufacturer).
      Using "Hikoki" was a great idea, imo, because in most places, the box you got the tool in always said "Hitachi-Koki" on it.

    • @histguy101
      @histguy101 8 місяців тому

      @@robertrada4783 I don't know if the story is true, but that may have been Lowe's perspective.

    The difference between the Metabo and Hikoki is that the Matabo is made using the imperial measurement system for size and air pressure and the Hikoki is all metric. It takes someone with a lot of skill to add the name on the different tools and they come off the same production line. From what I've heard those guy's can tell which is which just by picking the tool up, even with their eyes closed!!! 😋😂

    The regassing be done with something like a 300bar hand pump the same as they use for air rifles. I have two of those pumps from Amazon at £36 each and they work well..IF you have the strength to get it to 300 bar. The max pressure is only about 120psi/8.27bar so even a cycle trackside foot pump can manage that. I suppose the tool uses its own proprietary fitting though just to make life awkward.

    • @deandohertygreaser
      @deandohertygreaser  6 місяців тому

      Yes it could as long as you have the right fitting

    • @Biffo1262
      @Biffo1262 6 місяців тому

      @@deandohertygreaser the valve itself is a normal Schrader valve but it's too deep set to get the normal fitting on it. The screw thread is actually part of the outer casing which means you have to buy their specific adapter. I don't know if a tyre valve extension would even work which I doubt as they haven't left any male thread to attach to but if it did then it's a doddle to regas yourself. I reckon I could knock up an adapter for myself even in a mini lathe but HPA isn't something to mess with if you don't know what you are doing. Fortunately I do as I have trained and worked with high pressure apparatus all my working life.

    Let me start of in saying your channel is very informative, thank you so much for taking the time to post these.
    I have a question and I know this isnt the best forum to ask but i need a honest answer on some things.
    I am in a position of management at a shipping depot, we load items onto truck trailers. These items roll so to secure them in the trailer we use Metabo HPT nailers (nr 3675dd) to secure wedges around the items securing the wedges to the floor of the trailer. We have about 12 nailers on hand and they are constantly breaking. After a couple weeks of use the lights will blink orange and it will no longer fire. We use Metabo brand nails, we try to keep the guns clean, but no matter what the guns continue to break. I am starting to now question whether maybe the flooring of the trailers could be too hard. I really cant think of any other reason to have the guns continue to break. When we send them in for repairs to metabo they say that the part # 15 has teeth knocked off of it and it appears we are either firing nails onto other nails or firing with jams, both of which I cant say for certain doesnt happen but i can say everyone has been warned against such activities and I havent observed these actions. If you see this do you happen to have any ideas?
    Either way great channel!
    Thank you!

    I will no longer buy a product that can't be repaired, the problem is finding them.

    I think the branding thing is to do with the perception that the USA doesn't like things Japanese. I remember when Japanese Diesel Kiki decided to rename to Zexel in order to make progress in the US markets.

    How many PSI / BAR do you charge the gun up to?

      It seems that special Hykoki\MetaboHPT air line tool has a regulator on it to put the proper pressure in it. I don't know the exact PSI, off hand tho. That's why they want you to buy their specialty tool! 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻👌🏻👨🏻‍🔧😀🍻

    Maybe someone purposely left the air out of the Metabo, you know like a disgruntled employee.

    that first hikoki was ABOLUTELY still shooting nails. what in the world was that one about.
    how on earth was the wood getting torn up like that where it wasnt before if the nail wasnt getting shot

    • @EliotTruelove
      @EliotTruelove 8 місяців тому +1

      Drive pin overextends from the front and dimples the wood, this is so the framing nails sit below the surface

    Way to many jump cuts,every time you have a problem you cut it out instead of showing how you solved it...This is not helpful at all for someone trying to do this repair..

      Sadly, if I didn't cut the length down, this would be 2 hours long on each full stripdown.
