Repairing powertools, Elu, evolution, makita, Paslode tools all in need of repair

- Work is not slowing down this week. More tools are coming in than going out.
We must be the Christmas rush, which is a problem, as I have only got 2 more weeks before I'm off for the Christmas holidays.
Remember, all these videos are only to help others and spread awareness that tools don't always need to be replaced.
They are not to advertise for more work.
I can not take in extra repairs. All these repairs are for local customers who have dropped them into the shop themselves.
I will not be taking on extra work, I'm afraid.

fair play . changing them brushes on that old draper really saved the owner from the imbarisment of it being just set to the wrong speed
Price of that Paslode motor is a disgrace! Looks like its a couple quid motor from a toy!
A big thanks for you being able to show camera angles at truly annoying machine assemblies and that you can do all these repairs on camera.
That ELU MOF 177 is an excellent machine. It can always be repaired even if it is 40 years old. If someone wants to change bearings on one of these routers, don't forget to put in the orange switch BEFORE you're reassembling the two main parts. At 34:05 is the time when the orange switch in the left upper part of the screen should have been fitted, after that it's not possible anymore. Dean had to reverse everything between 34:05 and 36:59. If you're doing it yourself, don't forget that little detail 🙂
you are correct
Had a similar belt sander repair - used a couple balls of epoxy putty (clay like consistently) behind wear plate to give a new flat surface for plate to lay on - cheers - love the multiple tool videos
Jeff H.
That was my first thought when I saw the problem. JB Weld Steelstik has gotten me out of many awkward problems. The JB Waterweld is a great option as well.
love the old Elu tools, and still have some working fine after 35 years.Their routers and chop saws were the template that many other manufacturers followed, as they were the trade carpenters choice.
Me too. Iv got an old 110v Elu biscuit jointer that works like it’s new still. And a 1/4 router that also works like new but has lost favour to my 18v makita. can’t bear to part with it tho as it still a nice tool to use!… now just a back up tool.
I don't miss my Elu slide miter-- she would seize in minutes!
Seeing that old mag drill still working is cool. Keep up the great work brother.
I still own a very old ELU circular saw. But I now mainly use a Bosch Plundge-action Track-Saw instead. Easy servicing, especially for bearings should be standard on all tool, especially a router.
Oooh... the DeWalt switch repair was good to watch !!
I like the term "grub screw" it did look like a grub. We call them "set screw" in the states (at least in Florida and Ohio).
I had that same Elu router in the 120v flavor up until a fire sale a couple of years ago. You can 100% get the controller and tachometer for cheap from any Dewalt service center. BYO Bearings. That’s the first thing Black & Decker cheaped out on with the bastardized yellow versions. Big time. PS - it’s missing a nut. Two on the left thread at the top.
Thats a good complaint, "More coming in than going out". as long as it doesn't get outa hand! Best wishes from Wexford!
MY DCF887 has the same issue. Going to try this repair myself, much thanks to your vast library of tool repair knowledge
Hi I've had elu router for about 34 years had a bit of work done on it but still going strong. Good old stuff elu 👍
Love your videos favourite UA-camr hopefully you can start selling merch. Especially for the international customers
The original Elu routers were great tools for their time. Then B&D bought them out and the slide to Walmart status went with them.
I can see why you have a busy succesful business there I used to work for a large small tools hire company in the UK and thier philosophy was if its broke replace it the customer pays ,in fact they made more profit from charging for replacement kit than they did from hire revenue after the hire revenue was taken into the equation.
As you have a shop as well the same scenario could exist but obviously does'nt and it is a testimony to your honesty and integrity that you have a loyal customer base.
Why can't you put the used brushes in the Evolution magnetic drill? You only used them for 20 seconds.
They arced for 20 seconds, not worth using them on a new armature. Brushes are relatively cheap.
On a used armature I'd probably use them but I can't see how they look from here.
Just out of interest, why could you not use the first set of brushes on the Evolution?
The bad armature chewed them up.
@@deandohertygreaser Could the brushes be "resurfaced"?
Your an Ace!
Thanks for all the content!
Very helpful
This is how it plays out in my head before i try and fix something. Never end like this though lol
Loved the intro, nice way to show what's to come and all the faults 😎👍
I actulay forgot I did that. I must do it one often.
Welcome lads . . . . and lasses and the ones in between 😉
had a giggle at that so called "Draper SDS" for sure. Not knowing it had a VS Dial and stuck on No:1 Speed, lol. Keep the vid's coming buddy :)
One thing that consumes me when I watch these: how on Earth do you get the camera so close to your perspective without actually blocking your view of the tool? It feels like I’m IN YOUR HEAD as you’re repairing these things.
Them elu routers have been around since the 70s they have been under different brands such as trend and dewalt, they only stopped making them about a year ago. I always think why change something if it works.
Loved the video.simply superb
Great video thank you? You sure your not a magician
Magnificent! Thanks for sharing!
It is nearly always the lead on GSH11E Bosch I got a good few of them lately to fix.
Repairing is a hard work not just changing the parts just like that makita roller sander .keep up good job
1:06:15 - these brushes literally had 10 revolutions on the old armature, why are they no good?
The old armature was bad amd chewed them up. Not worth risking a new armature with worn brushes
I am a new subscriber who is binge watching. I came across an episode where you unloaded on Milwaukee Tools. Having been born in Milwaukee I’ve always preferred Milwaukee tools and never had a lick of problems. I am transitioning to cordless and again never an issue. My question is should I be doing any preventative maintenance other than a thorough cleaning and sharpening at the end of the season. Specifically a chain saw, hedge trimmer, string trimmer or blowers (M18). I respect what you’re doing and enjoy how you teach as you go.
Just remember, Milwaukee is not the same Milwaukee of old. They are made and owned in china now and not the same quality.
Yes cleaning them down will help and but keeping everything sharp is most important. dull blades will put more load on the motor which can cause it to draw to many amps and cook components inside.
also when using them never overload them, you cannot abuse them like you would a 2 stroke engine tool.
Why could you not use the brushes you tried with the bad motor, on the Evolution mag-drill? You tested a set, ran it less than a minute, but then opened another new set for the new armature.
Thanks
My question precisely. I think he might do that to amuse himself, knowing it will have us scratch our heads wondering WTF. There is no way those brushes got burned in 20 seconds of use. The only thing I can think of is a possible irregular cut-in developing on the brushes' contact surfaces caused by the damaged armature, but come on, that's no reason for a new set. Might simply be an OCD quirk (which I can partially relate to) new armature must have new brushes, period, no other options are acceptable.
Im still scratching my head
Just need to rub the brushes on a fine tooth file to clean up the face😱🤗.👍🏴
You are the dogs bollocks mate
I've had two of them MOF 177 1/2" routers & two MOF 96E 1/4" & at the time there was no better Routers available. When the last MOF 177 got stolen I replaced it with an Hitachi (I still got it) & it's fucking garbage compared to the Elu & I still got one of the original Trend that replaced the 96E but the switches are crap the Trend has had about 5 new switches.
I got the beast Festool OF2200 as main 1/2" router now but them Elu now Dewalt are still seriously well balanced & nice to use Routers. The design has barely changed in 30yrs & for good reason.
I was surprised at just how much of a pig they are to open up for the bearings though.
You're absolutely right regarding being burnt. If I find out the company doesn't honor their warranty, or if they can't be repaired, or if the parts aren't available, I'm out. Will be interesting to see if the new EU right-to-repair legislation effects tools at all.
i think that is going to screw up things more. companies will stop selling the tools into the market rather than offering parts. they are not set up to sell parts and have no networks in place . its buy and forget unfortunitly
@@MelbourneAlan But there are lots of companies that ARE set up to provide parts and are already doing it. If a company is going to leave the whole European market because they don't want to provide spare parts, that's certainly an interesting business decision...
@@Studio23Media a lot of companie do sell parts. look at some of the older stuff dean has repaired on this channel. some companies are great. if talking about the companies that are not set up. look at all the cheap brands out there like the diy big box stores like b and q etc. their own brand and cheap tools have no parts back up,. a lot of them could disapear if its not feasible to cheaply sell the parts.
the big companies are not going to pull out like milwaukee but will make it hard to get parts. it will depend on what the law says. if its a blanket right to repair nothing will change but if its a right to get the parts indevidually and repair then it will change things.
it is a disgrace that you can have a broken switch worth a few euro and have to spend a hundred buying an assembly with loads of bits that are not needed.
time will tell what happenes
Brilliant content Dean man.. I'm enjoying the process watching these machines being fixed. How did u get into this game? It's something I'd love to be able to do but I guess it takes a fair level of experience to be able to fix them as quickly as u do.
I love watching these types of videos bcos we can learn a fair bit from them.
I have taken power tools apart before only to realise it's a heck of a lot more knowledge involved when u have to put them back together.. LOL.
Keep up the great work.
I only found ur channel yesterday. Great viewing mate..
Again excellent vid. 👍
There's an nsk plant in Peterlee by me in county Durham 👌
That Elu is the same as an old dewalt I have and people in the US worship as the best. Guess dewalt rebranded it.
You should start doing some list videos like best and worst most common faults things like that
Fantastic 😊😊😊😊😊
👍👍
I've the same model Elu Router shown - it was my Fathers - still in the it box it came in and in almost pristine condition... sadly, the same cannot be said of my Father, though he is in a box.
Sorry to bother you but when dealing with dirty contacts I have an old toothbrush and after I spray with contact clean I scrub it down with the toothbrush for a more through clean. Hope it helps you.
Love it😅
I’d fill that hole in the back of the belt sander with JB weld to help support that steel plate
That Elu Router looks likw its straight out of the 80s...
Even the new stuff looks dated once it gets grimy
it probably was. them tools are really old now
@@MelbourneAlan i did a quick Google search and it is!!!, some of these tools look pretty nice aesthetically too....built to last!
Good Work. No Complaints from me Paddy
HI, I love watching handling those power tools with so much experience. I watched a lot of them already and just wondering why each armature still arching after replacing brushes needs to be replaced instead of just cleaning and polishing the commutator? Is it because the remaining copper is usually to thin to work properly or it's a time saver? I think I didn't see a video yet where it was restored.
Cleaning the com bars dosent do anything. It simply looks fresh until the machine is turned on. The black on The com bar is graphite from the brushes, it is conductive anyway and have no effect on how it runs. Plus the black mark will return the second the armature is powered up.
@deandohertygreaser Gotcha.. Thanks for the explanation. I do some DIY tool fixing from time to time so that's good knowledge
Keep them videos coming much luv 🫡🫶
could you possibly do a video showing how those gas nail guns work?
That old Draper didn’t half bark into life after a new set of brushes.
Hey Dean, do you by chance fix Stihl MS170 Chainsaws? if you've got a video on that I'd love to watch it thanks
Did Dewalt copy the design from Elu or is this a common router design. DW625
Just like an Irish... defining the tartan! 😂
Awsome
When are we going to see some "That's Her" merch?
I've been wanting to see you doing an elu router mine is whistling wnen it is showing down was thinking of chang the bearings myself but after seeing that i think ill send it to you. Only thing is im in dublin😢
Sorry. I cannt take in tools. I only do local repairs
@@deandohertygreaser no worries I'll get it sorted. Thanks for getting back. Keep up the good work really enjoy your channel..
@@deandohertygreaser dont worry dean we will load up all the elu routers we can find and get a mini bus up to donegal.
39:20 There's that Swiss (over)engineering. 😂One thing you can't accuse them of, though, is cheaping out on components.
"At least the butt holds" 😅
Leave that hammer drill on the low speed and return it and you will find out if that was the reason or not ;)
How can you go for a pint, all the trades would be pestering you to fix their tooling.
For the Evoloution: why cant you use the brushes you tried on the old armature? Wont they be "cut" into the shape of the new armature?
the old armature may have damaged them. its not worth risking the new armature
@@deandohertygreaser thanks for explaining 👍
Hi I have a question it was said to me that you need to be earthed for static for when your working on Dewalt impactor because of circuit board is that true . The switch is acting up.
No brainer to fix that old evolution. Should have plenty of life left
I am sure there are some lasses that watch your videos.
🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Where can I find hilti parts?
Do you have a collection point in Co Down area for tool repairs
only local repairs im afraid
That’s a pity top man
Paslode frustrate me if I’m honest,. They were the industry standard in nail guns world wide for DECADES.. I can’t see why they didn’t invest heavily into battery guns BEFORE everyone else added battery guns to there range. you only ever meet the older generation of tradesmen using gas/paslodes these days. Guns they invested. Into YEARS AGO. anyone new to the trades is buying someone else’s battery guns. shame really. dying brand in that sense.
Do you have online tool sales.
Affriad not.
Hello
140 Euros for a tiny electric motor.. What a rip off!
why do you call it a 'pry bar' but what it does is 'prise?' shouldn't it be a 'prise bar?'
It should be...
... you're a pathetically lame troll... XD
🇧🇷🫡
Love what I see. Question about mag drill brushes; Could you clean or burnish the first set and then use them ?
I was wondering the same thing? Why couldn't the 1st brushes be used?👍🏻👌🏻🤔🛠️🔩🔧🔌🔋⚡💥💨⚠️
