In 1974 Jack Kirby create a new comic book named after main character called the Sandman, whose costume is the one Jed is wearing. Jed was also a newly created supporting cast member of that comic. This version was the 2nd DC superhero character with the name Sandman (Garrett Sandford). His adventures, with the help of 2 assistants, involved him going into peoples dream to save them from evil forces. This comic was short-lived. About 15 years later a new writer used Hector, the son of Hawkman and Hawkgirl who had been a Superhero before, to replace the 1970's Sandman and take over his role.
Gaiman used all that backstory and added it to his comics as most of these characters had been unused for a few year. The two assistants became 2 of Dream's escaped nightmares who were hiding in Jed's dream.
The show isn't using the backstory but is using the characters with a little shake up to their roles in the story.

Jed's "Sandman" costume is based on a comics version (by Jack Kirby), but that's from the 1970s. The original superhero Sandman goes back to the 1930s, and had various different costumes and secret identities over the years. The 1970s costume was a great choice for this purpose, though -- Jed would have looked pretty silly in a trench coat, a fedora, and a gas mask. 🙂

The 1930's Sandman (Wesley Dodds) is a different character from the 1970's Sandman (Garrett Sandford) who's Jed's costumes is based. Also the character of Jed Walker was created in the 1974 Sandman comic.

Jed might look pretty cool in the Dodds costume, but the Sanford/Hall costume has that look that really says “SUPERHERO!”, which fits for a kid who would be into superhero comics.

@@0okamino Dodds does have a superhero spandex outfit too but his story doesn't interact with Morpheus in the main Sandman comic. They do have a crossover comic where Dodds and Dream met but it's just a stand alone story.

The thing with the Endless, is that they can't change, not their essence. Yes, Morpheus has changed, but he's changed in person personality. He has grown to accept his purpose. Galt was sent by her purpose. She wasn't trying to change herself, she was trying to change her purpose. Who you are and what you are aren't the same thing.

I think back in episode 2, Dream mentioned that Gregory started out as a nightmare.

My speculation on that is that it wasn’t by choice for Gregory. It just happened, and was accepted. However, a nightmare deliberately trying to somehow force that change might present some problems which could potentially be psychologically harmful. I hate to think that Gault might have ended up with a Garrett Sanford type of incident in her past efforts to do this, but maybe so.
