Morpheus is complicated. His responsibility as an Endless and steward of the human unconscious is more important to him than the interpersonal povs of individuals. His duty trumps even his own desires. He is very stubborn and reluctant to change.

Some people didn't like this arc of the series because it wasn't as straightforward as the first half of the season, with Dream having to get his tools back and finally facing down John Dee, a mortal with the opposite worldview as Morpheus' own. However I think this arc helps sell the idea that while Dream cares about humanity, he is not a "good guy" in the traditional understanding of what a good guy is. He sees things in the grandest possible scope, an universal scale. To him the whims of one mortal (Rose trying to find Jed) can't get in the way of his duty. Gault wishing to be a dream rather than a nightmare doesn't matter to him because he believes everything and everyone must serve a purpose, like it or not. And in this arc he is much colder than in the previous one, which is a lot more like in the comics.

@@ASageCalledQ Neil Gaiman did an excelent job of writing a character with a set of rules or even "morals" that isn't the same as our own as humans, but also in doing so without alienating the reader (and now, the viewer), so we understand Dream's perspective, but that doesn't stop us from thinking he's kind of a dick despite being right in his own way

Plus, the narrative structure in "The Doll's House" is very different than "Preludes and Nocturnes." That one was very linear - Dream has to do this, then this, then this next thing, until he's done. This one more... spirals inward (like a vortex). The characters gradually come closer and closer to each other until the finale happens once they've all reached the middle.

There are a bunch of changes from comic to live that I think made the story much much better. This storyline is one of them.
In the comics, there was actually a pair of Nightmares in Jed, Brute and Glob. They specifically had influenced the foster parents to mistreat Jed to create this 'bubble' of dreaming cut off from the regular dreaming.
And... eh. It was interesting, but sort of... thin. For one thing, I don't need magical stuff to explain why humans are abusive and terrible. There's plenty of real stuff.
Gault being an actual sympathetic character, a nightmare who abandoned her position like Corinthian but for radically different reasons, is fascinating and just so emotionally compelling.

that's the interesting thing about morpheus. he's the protagonist of this tale, but not the hero. the sandman isn't a conventional, formulaic story. and sometimes he isn't even the protagonist, but goes through someone's else's story. like an anthology series hehe
it was fun seeing u guys guess and see what happens. because the source material is so unpredictable, the show isn't this either

In 1974 Jack Kirby create a new comic book named after main character called the Sandman, whose costume is the one Jed is wearing. Jed was also a newly created supporting cast member of that comic. That version was the 2nd DC superhero character with the name Sandman (Garrett Sandford). His adventures, with the help of 2 assistants, involved him going into peoples dream to save them from evil forces, which is what Jed thinks he's doing. This comic was short-lived. About 15 years later a new writer used Hector, the son of Hawkman and Hawkgirl who had been a Superhero before, to replace the 1970's Sandman and take over his role.
Gaiman used all that backstory and added it to his comics as most of these characters had been unused for a few year. The two assistants became 2 of Dream's escaped nightmares who were hiding in Jed's dream.
The show isn't using that exact backstory but is using the characters with a little shake up to their roles in the story.

Love your analysis, especially the bit about Gault's dream construction revealing her subconscious respect for Dream and how Dream has over-corrected from Death's lesson. As a comic book fan, it's so fun to hear your theories as you watch -- even when they turn out not to be correct, they make complete sense with what you've seen so far. You're always running with the details you've been given and making connections to other parts of the show, connections that most people might not make until a second or even a third watch. These are by far the best Sandman reactions I've seen for how deeply you engage with the series and its themes.

Dream is neither good nor evil, he just…is. He can be really merciful or really cruel. I’m new to Sandman, but I think what I’ve liked most about this series is that it’s so unconventional and does away with the usual “hero” tropes. As for Barnaby, he was truly evil and deserved what he got. But Clarice was a victim, a battered wife who lived in fear, powerless in the face of such evil. I had compassion for her. I tell myself that I would never allow myself to be in such a situation, but I will not judge those who fall prey to those living nightmares in human form.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 2 роки тому +1

I think you got it. He’s what I’d call a narrative protagonist, which doesn’t necessarily always qualify him as protagonistic in his interactions.

Another thing about Dream banishing gault, u saw how she wanted to be a dream of some sort. he too wants to find a meaning to this all, he too wants to find a deeper purpose to his very being. But when Death his closest adviser( who he actually listens to ), even trumping lucienne most times, told that he is only here to serve humans and they need him as much as he needs them in order to be okay with just being a "function". He lashed out at Gault by banishing her basically saying "If Im only here to serve PUNY humans then so are you, be a nightmare, stick to ur purpose or get banished, period." ( mind u this is coming from once again someone who read the comics and know how much dream looks to his older sister death for answers lol I love saying that). btw ( reading a comic book/manga is so damn time consuming omg.)

LUCKILY HIM BEING ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL BEINGS IN DC UNIVERSE MAKES HIM 99% IMMUNE TO DESTRUCTION. he get to chill and do whatever he wants for the most part lmfao. his personality is actually quite MELLOW compared to what he could be doing with that power.

There's all sorts of little touches of adaptation from comic to show, especially heavy in this episode, but one thing Iove is that they did not change the amount of money the foster parents are getting for Jed. $800 in 1989 (when the comic was written) is over $1900 in today's money, but they kept it at 800, and it feels like it makes the foster father even more of asshole (Jed being black in the show also give it a whole other dimension, he and Rose are white in the comic.)
