Seeing gentle, insecure Egwene tell Renna "I will kill you." with such certainty and barely suppressed emotion was honestly the highlight of the episode for me. Perfectly acted as well. Can't wait for that to come true.
Did you notice that when Rand tells Suian that he live in her cage, we hear *two* voices? Very interesting (I don’t want to say anything else because possible “spoilers”). In regard to Suian‘s comment that it would’ve been better if Rand had been female, I don’t think that has anything to do with personalities or how difficult it might be to work with one or the other. (there’s no way that Nyneave would be any easier to work with than Rand would be!) Instead it has to do with, first, the fact that female channelers can only teach other female, channelers, and male channelers can only teach male channelers. Which is why Rand still knows so little after six months; there is no one to really teach him. And second, if the Dragon were female, there would be no worry about her going insane, since the taint is only on Saidin.
the whole mystery box it can be a female was an obvious poor choice by Rafe. Verrin says the male pronoun, "he" when referring to the banner in the sky. The show cannot even stay consistent with its hate letter anti source material.
@10:45 "Is she punishing herself?" Yes, it's the Aiel Ji'e'Toh as they talked about when Perrin freed her from the cage. She has Toh to Perrin, obligations. A debt to repay. She also failed her sister (not sure if litteral sister or just a sister of the Spears, like how Moiraine calls all other Aes Sedai her sisters). Her failure got that woman killed and now she is repaying that failure with a beating. Once both she and the other two feel that she have repaid her Toh, the thing is handled and considered history.
As a heads up. Cairhien where Mat was is like the equivalent of New York in the US and Falme is like Los Angeles. So clearly Lanfear did something to transport him and have him wake up on the other side of the continent. 😉
One thing I do after watching each Amazon episode in this series is watch the bonus material that is included. I don't know if you routinely do so (I suspect you do, but after reacting.) Some of the questions you raise while reacting are covered in those additions, specifically, where the series varies a bit from the source material and why they chose to do so. In any event, I remain enthralled by the series as I was by the books, and thank you for reacting!
As a book reader I'm happy to see other book readers just enjoy the show for what it is. It's exhausting with the weekly complaints. That being said I just need to see Rand put in some practice with the sword please.
Same. People who have never wanted to read it are interested now. I can finally geek out a bit about Jordan’s work with them. I saw the same thing with the one piece adaptation-length is a big barrier for entry, now more people have been pulled in. I don’t think either live action has readers as the target audience anyway.
8:57 "We'd have been so much better off if you had been girl". It wasn't about him being a rebellious man, Women can teach one another, they don't have the taint, so them touching the one power doesn't drive them crazy over time, and women can link. A woman Dragon would mean they could train her and link with her to fight the dark one making training and battle more effective. How does a woman train a man if they can't see each others weaves and even touching the One Power is wildly different?
Egwene understands that their culture is built on power and fear. By displaying how strong she is she automatically has an advantage. See the Seanchan can easily find a new suldame in reality they have no worth, even tho they pretend it is the other way around. The suldame can be replaced a strong Damane can't. Egwene shows Renna that she already understands the truth and puts pressure on her that way.
This episode has upset a lot of readers because they changed a lot of 'rules' from the books, but personally i enjoyed the episode. Siuan said it would be easier if rand was a girl because only men go mad channelling btw. Another good reaction and love seeing how much you are getting into the show :)
Also because it would be so much more straightforward to train her to use the one power, no need to cage her since she will be indoctrinated during her Novice/Accepted training anyway, and also because no problems with reds wanting to gentle him
On the other hand the depth and complexity behind the entire story comes forth when you have a male channeler being the only hope, and the concequences that follows men who channel. The risk, and utter horror that for the entire world not to die, this one person has to learn channeling while not going mad doing so, with very very few possible teachers. I mean, from a peon standpoint, imagine just being able to stand beside, hoping for the best. If it would have been a girl these extra dimension would have been completely lost and it would have become ridiculously bland. That is why I really dislike the woman comments since s1. Also when Verrin quotes the prophecy she says "he shall...", leaving the gender question from s1 redundant.

Like many have pointed out, relationships in the book look different from the show... Some are outright changed, some just simply have more or less visibility in the show; but in general it has more to do with the fact that R. Jordan, while he is a fantastic writer with very in-depth world building and character work in fantasy, writing romance was never his strong point... Or his priority to be fair... There is romance in the books, there are couples (many of them), but there isn't a lot of focus put into them, specially not outside of Rand's as the main character Moiraine and Suian have a far less visible relationship in the books and while it is said that they indeed had a sexual relationship in the tower; the show did changed it to be more of a romantic relationship with actual feelings of attachment... In the book it was implied that they was more like them mutually satisfying their urges and needs, sexually, without either of them actually being lesbian or thinking that they are or exclusively "loving" each other... They were simply focused on their lives in the tower and their ascension as Aes Sedai, so they didn't have time or desire to look for placer outside the tower, so they had each other Their relationship was indeed "elevated" and made far more intimate in the show; and so was their "conflict" over the dragon... Their stances are fairly similar, but like many things, the show has condensed their storylines and therefor their difference of opinions about how to "handle" the dragon in the present comes out far more divisive... But relationship wise, there is a lot, like A LOT more to unpack from the books and it depends on how much of it are they going to incorporate or remove; specially when it comes to introducing the huge amount of characters that get introduced book after book after book, and how they affect the relationships of the series... I think it's fair to say that you aren't going to see some things coming if you read the books; and also on the show... I think there are going to be some introductions next episode that are going to setup things that will catch you off guard 😅
Good points all! Thank you. For those of us who enjoyed the entire series of books for more than a decade, you've done a good job of pointing out differences, while avoiding any intent to spoil what may yet come. This would actually be easier to comment on had EvilQK already read the series before reacting, but she is catching up, and perhaps when this is all finally completed on Amazon, we'll get a reprise on how the series varied from the books. But I've already stated that I loved the books, and I love the treatment that they are doing here as well, even if they differ in some fairly major ways. Jordan did like to draw things out, sometime to the extreme, after all! This departure from the source material is somewhat less in Game of Thrones, but I credit that to the fact that Martin was an active advisor in the way the show ran. Still, some major differences, but the character arcs seemed to be more consistent with the source material. And just like in this case, I loved both the books AND the series (up until the climax of Season 7, but others may have a different opinion.)
Yes, the books are different from the show. The relationship between Suian and Moiraine is not as visible as it is in the show. This is for two reasons. Reason number one is because like most literature from the 90s and before, queer characters had to be coded. It is mentioned throughout the books how Suian and Moiraine were/are "pillow friends." Most straight people did not catch this and if so thought maybe they gossiped while sharing a pillow at sleepovers; however, us queer readers caught on to this fairly easily. Reason number two why it is not mentioned that much and why their relationship is a secret is because when they were accepted, they were attending the Aes Sedai who had the vision of the dragon reborn and she died right after it. From that point on, they pretended to grow apart and kept their friendship a secret so no one would ever know they were working together to find the Dragon. In the show they are already full sisters when they found out and have been aged up. Their relationship is still a secret even though we get to see the relationship for what it is as opposed to it only being mentioned in code like it was in the books. This is why there are a bunch of angry straight fans who swear up and down in videos that Rafe included this relationship as some kind of agenda because Rafe is gay but Robert Jordan even said when asked about pillow friends that it was in fact a sexual relationship and that the two shared more than just pillows and pillow talk.
