This is the one to get. I already have a steam deck so I'm fine for high end emulation, so I'm really just looking for something more portable. I've wanted a retroid for years but the massive screen bezel always held me back, kudos to them for making this so premium.
Idk how Retroid could meaningfully improve on this further (aside from upgrading the chipset and ram), it really feels like they crafted the perfect handheld
@@EmuQuesthigher refresh rate and 8 Gen 2 and maybe for a stylus in the back somewhere. If Motorola can add a stylus for cheap, surely these companies can, doesn't even have to be a fancy one like the S Pen. That would bump the price up a lot though.
A lot of handhelds have passed through my hands these past few years, from the Powkiddy, Anbernics, Miyoo, Odin 1 and 2. I've been constantly looking for a device to keep company with my Steam Deck Oled. Since I mainly use the Steam Deck for modern games from the PS3 generation to the present. The Retroid Pocket 5, due to its shape and screen size, finally looks like the perfect companion to play all retro games from PS2 onwards.
How you feel about the Odin mini being that companion next to the steam deck that's what I been thinking about adding my mix of gaming instead of making my steam deck my all in one
@@franciscobutte oh i'm happy with what I have now 35xxh which fit perfectly in my jacket's pocket. I'm not interested in android devices. All I want now is for muOS to have kids mode just like batocera. Knulli is just way too slow to startup. A real DS clone is the dream but I know it's just too much to ask
Just ordered mine, I doubt it but I'm wondering if it has a gyroscope built in? I got it mostly for classic games but there are going to be some Android games. In call of duty I definitely play better with gyro on when in iron sights.
We're spoiled by the quality of the handhelds on the market today. We're equally spoiled by the quality of the men who review them. Zu, Stubbs, Rob, Joey, and many others bring it every day and in every video. You likewise are one of those high quality reviewers. It has been a pleasure watching your content here on the Retro Handhelds channel and I hope your standalone channel is a big success.
I hope the Pro version has a high-end chip, it's the only thing holding it back. I've been waiting all my life for the perfect handheld and this is the closest thing yet. Absolutely gorgeous and what a screen!
I feel lucky that I don't care about any switch emulation lol. This device is more than enough for psx, ps2, psp and gamecube for me. You don't need to 3x resolution every single game either. My 27 inch monitor is also 1080p, I can handle 720p or native resolution games on a tiny 5.5 inch screen fine
I am one of the few people who still chooses the pocket s daily. Slim enough to put in a jacket pocket, 6 inch 1440P screen, crazy powerful, barely ever have to take it out of silent mode. I am trying this RP5 for comfort and OLED, and I don't really play switch so power shouldn't really come into play too much. Excited, but also wouldn't be surprised if I just stick with pocket s.
Nice review so thank you! Soon as some genius figures out how to print a grip for this i'm totally in! As it is those analogue sticks will break me and my shovel hands.
I'm a Steam Deck and RG35XX H user and I'm looking for a device to fill that middle gap.I've been looking at the RG556 so I'd be very interested in seeing an in-depth comparison between these two devices. I'd also like to see more performance testing of the RP5, especially Switch games. The RP5 looks promising, but the RG556 may be turn out to be "good enough" for my purposes, plus it's considerably more inexpensive.
I have the RG556 and love it. I curl up with that thing the way people curl up with a good book. It's so enjoyable to play. Plus you can score one for just $140 or less now that the Pocket 5 has dropped. It runs PS2 games a lot better than it gets credit for, the AMOLED screen is gorgeous and the comfort factor is off the charts. The thumbsticks could've been a little better but to me in no way was it a deal breaker either. It's a great bang for the buck device.
I sold my Odin 1 to buy the RP5 on pre-order. Looking forward... As for the Switch emulation, I understand that many people want to play Nintendo exclusives, but the Switch indie game library is amazing, surpassing the PSVita's position of best portable for independent games, and I intend to take advantage of that, games like GatoRoboto, Hades, Dave the Dive, The Menssenger... should have a great performance on this device.
Looks good but I find the screen size to be a little small especially since the image while running 4:3 games is even smaller. To me 6" is min. while 7" is best. I usually use CRT shaders for older titles to minimize the sharp square pixel block edges.
Love the size. If I didn't already have my Odin 2 mini, I would have bought it. I'll stay with my mini for a few years. Wonder what will be out there by now.
Honestly I think Black will take the longest for some people for shipping since so many people are going black. I think the less popular colors like white and 16 bit will ship sooner
I cant wait to get one of these. I love the rp4pro and what little i had issues with. This iteration seems to fix most of my gripes. I just wish that left thumbstick was on top
I wasn't particularly bothered, but I think it's gonna come down to each person's hand size and how they grip the device. It is pretty easy to pop the stick top off, which could be an option (though not optimal).
My 2 main gripes about this is the all glass/fingerprint magnet front and the lack of an OPTION to have the d-pad at the bottom. Trying to play any system that uses the analog as main will be very difficult. It has so much power now to play more advanced games, but the analog stick at the bottom... kinda kills it for me.
I'm pretty sure a grip will appear at some point for it, be it from Retroid maybe or third party. About the fingerprints: Russ from Retro Game Corps wrote on his community page that it's way less fingerprinty than he expected. And tbh it's just like a smartphone or a tablet screen, I don't get what the big deal is.
@@SIQmai I have no problems with cleaning fingerprints off the screen, but for the front panel, around the buttons, dpad, analog stick? I understand why they did what they did. OLED looks great when it's all black glass.
I did have issues with a couple games. Due to time constraints I couldn't go in depth to a bunch of titles, I may check out more games over on my channel once I receive my retail unit!
This will be my first retro handheld console. My only request is to be able to play PS2 and older console games. It’s said that this device comes preloaded with 20,000 games. Is this true? Can I play the games directly as soon as I get the device? A small note: I don’t care about Android games.
When using Rocknix or Batocera, is the framerate actually smooth 60fps? I get frame stutters. Can anyone test with a 240p test suite or something? Android is fine, but these 2 Linux OS's have this issue, no matter what core I use. Thanks!
Pouvez-vous me dire si, lorsque l'on achète cette console, les jeux sont déjà intégrés dedans ou doit-on les rajouter soi-même ? Ce serait vraiment bien d'acheter la console avec les jeux déjà intégrés dedans.
Great question. I think that's mostly going to come down to size preference. If you already have a 7" pc handheld, I think the 5.5" companion is nice. If it was going to be your only/main handheld, then the 7" of the Portal and the extra oomph is potentially worth it.
Did anyone use DHL delivery and know how long it takes? I ordered stuff with DHL from austrailia on the 2nd on got it on the 10th in canada, I know where I am i AM closer to china .
It looks DAMN good. I'm not in the market currently, JUST got a RP4P AND Odin 2 Max (yes both; got 'em for a steal) and am trying to find energy to set them up (coming from an RG351P, yes really, and have just emulated light stuff on Android before), but the screen on this... It looks great. Heart some complaints about the stick placement but have small hands. Will see if I can resist this until something more powerful with more facebuttons (for the fighting games) comes along. Asked this on a different reviewers video but... Are the triggers analog (for racing games and specifically Mario Sunshine)? Edit: the mini looks more like something up my alley (better stick placement vs worse specs but smaller size... bit of a hard choice for many I'd imagine) but wouldn't drop big cash on something I'd bring outside in a multi-cultural society. Will stick with the 351P for outside of the house use for now. IS the stick placement better on the mini? It looks like it.
I’m loving my anbernic 406v , I see a lot of people struggle with buying tons of these lol, I think if you got the 406v you’re good to sit back for a while. Shyt I’m playing pc games on mine 😂❤

Thanks for the video. Such an attractive device, but... 24:30 I wouldn't trade my Odin 2 (except for an Odin 2 Portal) : Switch, Winlator, soon WiiU, some emulators are still in another league coupled with the 8 gen 2.
Derek, I agree with your thoughts on the ergonomics on the Odin2, especially with D-pad gaming. Are you expecting the Odin2 Portal to be an improvement with the V shape control scheme? Will you be reviewing the Portal as well? Thanks for all of your work, buddy. 🍻🤘🏼
Fantastic review, thank you! The Pocket 5 looks awesome. But I ended up going with the Odin 2 Pro Rainbow variant as an upgrade to my RG556. I've wanted one so bad since the day it dropped. With the release of the all new Pocket 5 and Odin Portal the Odin 2 Pro's price has already come down considerably. Scored it at a great price on an AliExpress flash sale. To me it's still the undisputed King of Android retro hand helds and i'm so stoked for it to arrive tomorrow. Whatever your own personal dream device is, buy it now before the holiday shopping season wipes out everyone's inventory.
Just bit on this with the discount code. Too good a deal for $60 off the $200 which ended up still costing with the shipping but that code was great for a discount. I can't wait to play PS2 and others on this. Will end up soon ordering the screen protector with it too. Wish I could have paired it in the same order but sadly it wasn't an option to add it that I saw. edit: Sorry I meant the Mini.
I was one of those people. The P5 looked a lot bigger in promo pics than it actually is. I read the spec sheets; but, I just completely failed at visualizing the specs. Seeing it next to a Vita during the RH Livestream is what knocked some sense into me.
Pocketability matters to a lot of people. I have a Steam Deck already, so if something gets too big for my pocket, then it comes to a point where I just ask myself 'what's even the point of me buying this?'
@@skycloud4802 I have a rog ally and it does everything but the big size and low battery life makes me prefer something more midsize if I can get away with it
The review units still have charging/drain Issues. I believe they said they have fixed it for retail units. So stay tuned for reviews once retail units are in hands.
I will never understand why so many people prefer handhelds at this performance level to favor d-pad centric layouts & games. Something like this is wayyyy overkill for that and it generally makes later platforms like GC and PS2 feel more awkward
I just don’t see the point when the Odin 2 is double the performance and a better screen for 80$ more or for 50 more get the Odin 2 portal for 110$ more
@ I see. For me the Odin products are a bit too expensive, but if retro gaming is your main thing, why not. Having the Steam Deck makes it hard for me to justify paying much more than $200 for a smaller handheld for older games. If only they had switched the position of the left analog stick, I would buy the RP5.
I have an Odin 2 Max and I can answer this. Most if not all of games on my switch are indie games. I play mainly PS2, PS1, PSP, NDS, GBA, and SNES. Only Android games I play are ZZZ and Balatro. All of these can be played at 60FPS on a better screen and smaller form factor which is the RP5. I assume that is what most people requirement is, so there's no need to spend more for performance that we don't need. In addition, Odin 2 Portal is a big device and is way too expensive. At its size and price, might as well get a Steam Deck, or wait until Black Friday to get the OLED Steam Deck. You can get an used Steam Deck for much cheaper than an Odin 2 Portal.
@@FredMorgan-gb5el But then at that point might as well get a steam deck. Mine was $297. The appeal of the RP5 is its pocket-ability compared to higher end devices
A lot of people seem to be be complaining about the stick placement. Did everyone suddenly forget that all consoles but the Xbox have low side to side sticks?
Console controllers are held differently, and the sticks are basically in the middle of the controller and not on the bottom. Sticks *actually on the bottom* are uncomfortable to use and that's why the "dpad top" devices almost always need grips.
Hey, at the end I say buy it or don't and don't listen to me... Nobody should buy something they can't afford and just to have more stuff. But it's also a fun hobby and if you have the means to have a few devices and that gives you joy, I say go for it!
I bought the Steam deck when it launched. I have tinkered with it alot but not actually played on it a lot. Less then 100 hours of play id say. It is more powerful but at the end of the day it is a bit big which has been why i rarely use it... Im thinking about selling it and getting this instead. I already have a pc. I dont need ps3 emulation on the Steam deck and Moonlight works good for pc games or higher end emulation. This little thing would be great for me
I agree with you tho. We buy things we dont need. My pc is already enough. It does everything all these handhelds do plus alot more. I think its just cool for us that all these consoles that we had back in the day can all be playable on one tiny handheld with a beautiful screen. Generations of consoles. Its the dream console you would dream about when you were little 😅
You should probably grab a Calendar. The O2 portal in a best case scenario will not ship until December 31 which means it will not end up in any consumer hands in 2024. And they just posted an And they just posted an update In discord thing, there would be another small delay because of textured grips. Now I want you to go back and reread title of this video. 🤦♂️
I have of an original Odin. Getting this would feel like a lateral move. So I'm hoping there's a pro version coming (probably a lot sooner than we all think)

@bassderek obrigado. Não sabia que esse jogo tinha para android.
What emulator were you using for Switch? Y? S?
Any suggest for PS2 smartphone emulation(budget 200€) with snapdragon?
Don't abandon the GC color Derek! 😂 Thanks for the great review
But, but... the black is so good for oled and non 16:9 systems!
@bassderek I totally understand that and it makes sense but I'm a slave to the GameCube 😎
RP4 Pro ergonomics are perfect if you just put two popsockets on the back.
All of the game u can play as soon as u open it right
Left analogue stick placement is a poor choice for this. D-Pad up top is perfect for older retro titles but not 3D consoles.
BassDerek review!! 🍻🤘🏼🔥🚨
WoooOOOoo!
I think Odin 2 is still the monster to beat but it's twice the price.
Is it trying to be a vita buttons.. mixed with something else
RP - 5 = A-O2 PORTAL MINI is looking Awesome ...
Great Content... Indeed...
🤓🧐🥸
was surprising to see people wanting the mini so bad initially
I was one of those people. The P5 looked a lot bigger in promo pics than it actually is. I read the spec sheets; but, I just completely failed at visualizing the specs. Seeing it next to a Vita during the RH Livestream is what knocked some sense into me.
@@mattdavis9601 😄 it's easier to see now
Pocketability matters to a lot of people. I have a Steam Deck already, so if something gets too big for my pocket, then it comes to a point where I just ask myself 'what's even the point of me buying this?'
@@skycloud4802 I have a rog ally and it does everything but the big size and low battery life makes me prefer something more midsize if I can get away with it
Hot damn, those thumbs!
Now the question will be how the RP5 compare against the Odin 2 Portal (not released yet).
That's comparing oranges to apples two different products
Have they fixed the battery draining in standby??? Nobody wants to buy a handheld that needs changing before you pick up and play😔😔😔
The review units still have charging/drain Issues. I believe they said they have fixed it for retail units. So stay tuned for reviews once retail units are in hands.
@bassderek thank you so looking forward to this device hope this is fixed on the retail units
It's resolved but they need to publish the OTA to resolve it
I will never understand why so many people prefer handhelds at this performance level to favor d-pad centric layouts & games. Something like this is wayyyy overkill for that and it generally makes later platforms like GC and PS2 feel more awkward
.... i play super Nintendo in 4X3 on a 108 inch screen and it looks AweSomeNess PerSoNiFied....
The left analog position bugs me. The odin2 portal costed me just 100$ more. Too good to resist
Totally fair, if you want the bigger size and have the money, then the portal probably makes sense.
Looks amazing but I'm going to wait for a sequel to the mini.
What are you hoping to change on the Mini, better buttons? More Power?
@bassderek 4" screen and quiet buttons. My rg353m has nearly silent buttons. I've been spoiled.
@@jinstinky501 Maybe the 406H?? If it comes out..
Great video, I could not agree with you more about COD Mobile!
I just don’t see the point when the Odin 2 is double the performance and a better screen for 80$ more or for 50 more get the Odin 2 portal for 110$ more
How can the screen on Odin be better than RP5?
@ I was talking about portal
With the Odin Portal and Pocket Evo on the horizon, both also with OLED screens but better chips, I am skipping the RP5.
gba looks incredible. wow.
Do you have big hands? Handheld looks tiny when you lay your hands next to it.
Im buying this cause the RG 556 is rooted from Anbernic and some android games wont let you play them because of the root
I still wish they would have given a left joystick up top option.
@@ninjason57 same, however I still think it's the best option right now.
Yeah would be nice for the newer games.
I think I’ll wait a little bit till Odin 2 portal comes out
14:55 grab the biggest controller you have
It's actually smaller than some of my other telescoping controllers 🤣
@bassderek do you have smaller ones?
I love loud clicky buttons. I have mechanical keyboards so I can hear my typing.
Even if I get I probably won't play on it. My RP4P is just sitting there not doing anything
sell your odin 2?!?!?
NOPE , cause the Odin 2 is the GOAT!!
.... I was bored for along time but then it picked up ....
45:39 the consumerism here is crazy.
Hey, at the end I say buy it or don't and don't listen to me... Nobody should buy something they can't afford and just to have more stuff. But it's also a fun hobby and if you have the means to have a few devices and that gives you joy, I say go for it!
@bassderek Consumerism isn't buying something you can't afford. It's buying something just because you can with no real need for it.
Its the dream console you would dream about when you were little 😅
Might be the most exciting handheld. 😂 Just like the other 25
....PS2 GEX....
....PS2 ROAD RASH....
....PS2 GAUNTLET DARK LEGACY....
....PS2 THE SIMPSONS GAME....
....ARCADE MS PAC MAN SPEED UP HACK....
The title belongs to Odin2 Portal ,where beautiful Oled truly meets power.
It's 600$...
@@Stevanvel it's not..? Base model is $329
@@olizelda sry, my bad.
The only is his size, it has like a nintendo swich size.
belive it or not prince of persia looks better on the 556 xD
Add a phone app, and I would throw my iPhone out and replace it with this Retroid
💯
I have of an original Odin. Getting this would feel like a lateral move. So I'm hoping there's a pro version coming (probably a lot sooner than we all think)
The 865 is a good bit faster than the 845. And you know, oled.
My wallet. Ugh
Mood.
I prefer call of doodle mobile actually
Maybe Exciting if you have no other handheld. It is not bad, just meh. Enjoy.
