    Great review, and exactly what we expected. Not really sure why so many people are interpreting this review as “performance bad, buy Odin”. Again this is a mid tier device, under $250 that will still play everything the RP4 pro did, as well as some high end emulation (which will only get better after updates), and a better display / premium design. If performance is your main factor then you’ll always be looking at Odin, as it will always be the higher end option so that the two products do not offset each other given they’re sibling products marketed at different cost categories.

    $250 including shipping. It's so purdy. I seriously thought about adding it to the glass case collection. Ever since I saw the mini, I was really drawn to that glass front. Then I remembered that I had bought a PS Vita 1000 for $80 that was waiting attention from a long list of to do's. I bought a $8 card adapter and a $40 512GB sd card. I tried the new Vita hack (that's a lot easier than the first one). Now I've got a glass front handheld that plays my whole psone, psp, and psvita library. Then I took $110 and bought a Intel 12th Alder Lake N100 Mini PC--NucBox G2 (16Ram/512Gb) on today's Ali 11.11 sale. It was a tough call but I'm happy with what I got.

    I purchased this for my wife and I as our first emulator handheld. I am still interested in the Odin 2, but the design and screen of the RP5 sold me. If I was going to spend as much for an Odin or Odin Portal, I think I would just get the Steam Deck and that's not what I'm after. It can play the vast majority of PS2 games, but most PS2 games I want to play have a Gamecube version (sometimes superior). And I prefer playing Switch games on Switch for now because I don't want to emulate my own Switch games and I would be tempted to emulate games I don't own for an in-production modern console.

    I got mine about 3 weeks ago, put in a solid amount of time into setting up and playing the RP5. Honestly, being able to play PS2 games on the go reliably just puts a huge smile on my face. I find myself actually spending time playing things instead of just tinkering. Plus that screen, it's nice and vibrant. Love it.
    The only downside for me is some wonky ergonomics. Turns out my hands are on the larger side, so the sticks are kinda awkwardly placed. Face buttons also have a bit more travel than I expected, so it threw off my timing in games like THPS2. But overall, I'm absolutely pleased with it and what it's capable of. Glad your review helped me come to that decision to buy it. Thanks Russ!

    Very nice video Russ, I had preordered the RP5 for my fiance to get the promo pricing as this looked like the best handheld for the money and I'm happy to see reviews like yours affirming my assumptions, with the only real gripe being the positioning of the left joystick I can't wait for her GC RP5 to ship so I can get it loaded up with games and give it a spin. Hopefully emulation in android on the later nintendo consoles improves to the point of being able to run more complex titles on the 865 to make this a nearly timeless machine.

    The beauty of these videos is they are somehow re-watchable!! I’m brand new to handhelds and I’ve only done simple emulating in the past. I got the RP mini when it came out and I’ve had it for like 3 weeks. It’s such an awesome starter device I can play up to PS2 without issue (some PS2 games do struggle) plus the Wii games I’ve tried work well too. I’m experimenting with new stuff and as I progress I’ll move up to trying out tougher things like Wii U, switch, pc ports, android gaming, etc. and maybe by the time I get good at that stuff on my PC (nothing fancy but a solid gaming laptop) maybe I’ll be looking for a bigger and more powerful device and maybe the RP6 will be on the horizon then. Anyway all this to say great video I really appreciate your honest opinions and how you try to help us make these tough decisions. To quote you, Russ, in an older video, when you’re looking for a device you are looking for what’s the best fit RIGHT NOW based on what you wanna play. And then you just go from there. I wish retroid would take a shot at making a windows or steam OS based handheld. They have the retro market cornered when it comes to their devices but all their newest devices have that "its ALMOST perfect" feeling. its like they want to get as close as possible to high end emulation as possible without actually diving into it. at a $200 price point, its hard not to just recommend a used steam deck for a 100 bucks more if your goal is use high end emulators. if your not looking to emulate high end, the pocket 2S is a much better and cost efficient option.
    the nicest thing I can say about the RP5 is "its the cheapest and most powerful handheld that can still fit in your pocket".

    • @liamness
      @liamness 2 місяці тому +3

      Yes there probably is a market for something in between a Steam Deck and this, in terms of cost / performance / size. TBF if they go with x86 based chips that would end up with a much higher power envelope. At least if using off the shelf parts, AMD and Intel's newest chips seem very power efficient, but they are optimised for general computing use and not ideal for a gaming handheld. Valve are moving units at a scale where they can justify getting a custom design made, Retroid aren't.
      If think if they want to compete with PC handhelds the best way for them to do that right now is probably by sticking with ARM chips, and using compatibility layers like Wine / box86 etc so they can at least run lightweight / older games (which is what I've found I typically end up playing on my Steam Deck anyway). Winlator exists, but as the Retroid Pocket 5 also supports Linux (through Rocknix) that potentially offers an easier route, with reduced overhead, to emulating a PC / x86 environment.

    As these devices become more powerful I think it makes more and more sense to have analog stick on top.

    But for the next iteration I'm hoping for analog stick on top

    • @Magusguile
      @Magusguile 2 місяці тому +1

      I think Analog stick on bottom is one of the major things that will keep me from getting it. For me, D pad on top is great for PS1 and below, but once you can do so much above that, including really good android gaming, it seems like a waste to focus on D pad. Odin 2 just looks a bit too chonky for me, want that Retroid form with analog on top!

    • @AUTI5T1X
      @AUTI5T1X 2 місяці тому +1

      @@MagusguileHaving both sticks below is absolutely terrible for shooters, and racing titles. It feels terrible speaking in terms of ergonomics. The Odin mildly suffers from this issue with only the right stick being placed lower, but I digress.
      Having grown accustomed to the Steam Deck, its ergonomics feel way too natural, and it's almost ruined other handhelds because of them for me.

      Wow, video uploaded 16 seconds ago!
      In the Pocket Test, that you were so kind enough to do. You mixed it up, and instead of your usual baggy shorts (Hawaiian Special) you wore Chinos!
      And as you say, and as we can see it does "fit" into your pocket barely, but it is far from being comfortable. I would agree with you and say the Retroid Pocket 5 is NOT pocketable. I think the new Retroid Pocket Mini probably is.
      These devices are getting too large to grab and take it with your keys, wallet, and phone. It is why the Retroid Pocket 2S was such a good product, and where the 4 Pro has issues. At these larger sizes, I think the logical thing would be to get something even more comfortable, which would probably be the Valve Steam Deck.
      Great video, and happy gaming !!!

    So for the easy systems ... no problem, but lots of other devices can emulate those well, too.
    For the challenging systems, it's hit and miss, and you'll likely need to tinker to get the best performance.
    For me, that puts it in no man's land. I'll buy something cheaper if i just want an SNES/Genesis machine. I'd spend more if I really wanted something that could reliably do Wii, PS2 and Switch.
    For now, I'm sticking with a controller bolted to my S24+ and waiting a year for the Retroid 6.
