The Load Out is Jackson's song , Stay is a cover of the Maurice & The Zodiacs song from 1960 with Jackson altering some of the lyrics to fit the song about being on the road.
As much as getting old sucks, it’s been a privilege to have lived during the best decades of all genres of real music pre-auto tune. I’m glad younger people are finding it for the first time!
Stay" is a doo-wop song written by Maurice Williams and first recorded in 1960 by Williams with his group the Zodiacs. Commercially successful versions were later also issued by the Hollies, the Four Seasons and Jackson Browne. He still tours and ends his shows with this song. David Perry Lindley (March 21, 1944 - March 3, 2023) was the slide guitar player and singer.
The Eagles used to live in the same building as Jackson Browne and said his daily routine of practicing and songwriting made them realize they needed to be as dedicated as he was if they wanted to become successful.
That was such a fertile time in LA when so many artists collaborated, lived, and loved together. Browne, Eagles, CS&N, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, JD Souther, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Andrew Gold, Emmylou Harris, and others. They encouraged each other, inspired each other, and did great music together and separately.
David Lindley could play literally anything with strings. He also worked with Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, and Dolly Parton. He died of long COVID in 2023. 😕
Imagine driving down the road one day … and a DJ comes on the radio and says “Here’s the new one from Jackson Brown.” And then THIS comes on. All Eight glorious minutes of it. For those of us who lived through that moment, we are the luckiest of the lucky. But here’s the best part: dude, it happened every few weeks! Just one great song after another. That was the 70s.
Love the look on your face when you realized it was the song you thought it was. Yeah the original song was sung by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. The lyrics have been altered but Jackson and his crew do a great job with it. Love this version because it gives tribute to all the hardworking people who put it all together so people can enjoy concerts. Thanks for the great reaction. 👏👏🥰
I was just a punk, but my roommate at the time was a sound engineer always on tour. He came home and the album "Running On Empty" had just come out. That's where this track is from. Roadies, sound checks, load-outs, long bus trips. It was all real. We all listened to this album over and over and over again. 'Nuff said.
Maurice Williams, according to legend, was on a date when he was 15-years-old and was trying to convince his girl to stay out beyond her 10:00 PM curfew. She wouldn't, but he said the lyrics to Stay just came to him in that moment. He later recorded the song with his band the Zodiacs The song has been covered so many times by so many different artists that kids in America are practically born with the tune in their heads. Browne's version obviously changed the lyrics to make it an appeal to the audience to stay so that he (and the band) could continue to play music (the only part of a road trip that is actually fun for them). Ms. Butler's vocals speak to her talents as an artist -- On his next album Hold Out Browne wrote a tribute to her called That Girl Could Sing. Lindley's falsetto solo is a tribute to the original song and to the Four Seasons cover that both contain falsetto performances. The liner notes to the song on the original Running On Empty album contain the comment (The Zodiacs don't mind).
Another interesting video, the Bruce Springsteen tribute to Jackson when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ultimate show of respect from his peer.
I love this number because it speaks of the joy of performing in such a poetic, yet also prosaic way. The band is there to perform, all the rest they go through, all the helpers and the audience and all of it is there so they can play just a little bit longer before they have to hit the road for the next show.
Just saw him LIVE this past spring. Amazing. Glenn Frye lived below him.and said Jackson taught him how to write songs. This song is a thank you to his roadies...a love song.
If I have learned nothing else this day, I have learned for sure that you are no idiot. I do not build respect so quickly for idiots. I have gained much respect for you through binge watching your shows during this night. It helps me heal.. I get great joy out of watching you discovering great music.
Such a great song ❤I met a friend at “The Jug” bar in Jax. She was older and knew her music. She didn’t know this one. She was bitter sweet, like me. Whitty, We met abt 10 times. She was an 😮older 65 and me 53. She got lung cancer and brain cancer. We were simple friends. Her last text to me was this song. I knew she had passed and I smile knowing a small slice of her life❤….An amazing song and an amazingly wild friendship.
Like 👍 Number 600. Comment Number 110. Jackson Browne released his debut album 52 years ago. He and the late Glenn Frey wrote Take It Easy. Jackson Browne released his version and so did The Eagles in the same year, 1972! 🤯🤯 13:39 the late Richard Prior, RIP, was a comedian who inspired Mark Curry, Cedric, Martin Lawrence and other comedians. David LIndley (RIP 2023) was a great musician who was a sideman for Browne for quite a while but also a very in-demand sessions player for so may great artists his entire career. He also had a nice career as band leader for his band El-Rayo X. I have seen Jackson Browne several times since the end of 70s with the last time in 2015. JB always has great musicians in his band.
“The Load Out” is Jackson Browne's original song, written on the road as a tribute to the roadies and the fans. He paired it with the old R&B classic “Stay” with slightly modified lyrics to fit the occasion.
Best reaction video of all time. You cracked me up more than once! Jackson fooled around with lyrics to pay homage to his crew and backups and roadies for weeks. He was so modest and genuine he includes the concert goers. Alone on a darkened stage he begins "Now the seats are all empty; let the roadies take the stage... He tells the story of the road. "The only time that seems too short is the time that we get to play." "If the promoter don't mind, and the roadies, don't mind, can we can take a little time to leave it all behind ... singing one more song ....." The band starts to emerge from the shadows, beginning with Lindley; then the singers. This is the most epic encore of all time. That's why every recording is live. Google Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons for the version of "Stay" co-opted to FINISH the song; probably, Lindley's idea. "The Load Out" has no other ending. Browne was 16 when he wrote "Dr. My Eyes." Take a listen. On Dylan surpasses Jackson in any way.
you gotta do his The Pretender - album version - and Here Come Those Tears Again from this very show . my friend you stumbled upon one hell of a rabbit hole !
It's essentially a slide guitar, just played on his lap. Where you slide a smooth cylinder, or in a pinch a small bottle or soda bottle over the strings, to be able to smoothly slide from one note to another.
Jackson Browne is an amazing songwriter, muisician, producer and singer. He is far from an unsung hero or little known artist, he had/has a very full career with several top 10 hits for himself and of his songs recorded by other well known artists. Jackson is a lot like Carole King in that way. I have seen him live and he is perfect. I love this medley. Jackson wrote Load Out but not Stay, though they go together seamlessly. David Lindley is the one on the lap steel guitar and singing the high part...also an incredible musician.
David Lindley is playing a lap steel guitar...which is made to be played laying across your lap if sitting down or strapped on in front of your belly if standing.
You have to hear Running on Empty, the title track of its album. It was so popular and it's such a great song. Doctor My Eyes is another one. When I first heard Load-Out and Stay on the radio, I raced right out and bought the 45 RPM single. It's got the Load Out on side A and Stay is on side B, so as soon as it's about to make that transition between the songs at the end of side A, you have to yank the needle up and flip the record over really fast and set the needle down right on the first groove of side B.
The Load Out and Bob Seger's Turn the Page are the two best songs about being on the road as a musician and are perfect contrasts. The Load Out reflects much of the joy musicians derive from being on the road and Turn the Page reflects the drudgery that also comes with it.
Maurice Williams original version edit The song was written by Williams in 1953 when he was 15 years old. He had been trying to convince his date not to go home at 10 o'clock as she was supposed to. Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Running On Empty", "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
The steel is called a dobro. Jackson is still recording. David has passed. For me the best of this video is David walking through the dark stage areas to get to the mic. Does his thing, and calmly walks back to the dobro, and blows us away.
This was his love song to the roadies that made his show work, and to the fans who made the show worthwhile. That instrument was a lap steel guitar. Basically a regular guitar made to use a steel bar instead of fingers to press the strings. Jackson Browne wrote The Loadout and reworded Stay, by Maurice Williams, to match with The Loadout.
I've been watching your reactions for a while and now I see you have a Bowie State University shirt on. I grew up in Bowie. Now I'm in SW Florida. I worked at Bowie Texaco (now Shell) at 450 and 301 for 15 years...grew up on Kavanaugh Ln.....what a small world.
If you know The Loadout, the whole thing is just a really terrific 14 or so minute buildup to Stay. Then when David Lindley is up...ahhh. Its so well done.
Another song about life in a traveling band you might like is Bob Segars Turn The Page. I've always associated that one and this one since I was a kid when they were both big hits.
"Stay" was a Jackson Browne cover of the 1960 Maurice Williams version that the Temptations also covered in 1998 But I believe "The Load Out" was a Jackson Browne original
That is a laptop steel guitar. He has several. When I saw these two, and only two, no band, it was all guitar, laptop guitar, and piano. There is a different guitar per song. That is a lap steel guitar. Just think of it as a progression from using a slide when playing guitar in the regular manner, you hear that a lot in southern music and country music and Lynyrd Skynyrd and rock and bues and so forth. So if you take the guitar and lay it across your lap, and you use a slide, now you are playing a lap steel guitar. Closely related is the dobro, Lynyrd Skynyrd even does an entire song in celebration of it, and it's similar, but it developed a resonator, which gives it more volume and a unique tone quality. Finally, you have a pedal steel guitar. Which is a whole different construction, not directly related to a regular guitar; it uses pedals and bender bars, and it is also played with a slide. The technique for that is similar to what we are seeing here with the lap steel guitar.
You should check out jerry Douglas playing a dobro guitar. Also on his lap. Allison krauss singing james Taylor's "Carolina in my mind" at a. Trubute to james was my intro. Still have not reached the bottom of that rabbit hole
i'm sure someone's said this already, but every song on this album is live -- recorded in concert, rehearsal, hotel rooms, or on the bus... and each of the styles - country-western, r&b, disco - is given its own 3 seconds :)
If you ever find out that a band you want to see is playing at Merriweather Post Pavilion, get those tickets and go!! It is the best sounding music venue. Especially in the middle of the lawn.
You have been missing out my friend Jackson Browne is worth diving into deeper his songs are deep and meaningful...ive heard it called a slide guitar..
David Lindley was playing the lap steel guitar and he was also the guy who sang the high pitched Stay after the woman did.
Lap steel is absolutely correct. Not to be confused with a slide guitar.
RIP David Lindley, a master.
The woman being Rosemary Butler. Great set of pipes!
@@brendamilloy2557 thank you and I neglected to include her name. She’s got some awesome vocals!
Also known as 'pedal steel guitar'. Very popular in Country music. T
“Runnin on Empty” & “Doctor My Eyes” 😊 Jackson Browne is a national treasure!
The Load Out is Jackson's song , Stay is a cover of the Maurice & The Zodiacs song from 1960 with Jackson altering some of the lyrics to fit the song about being on the road.
Right. Maurice Williams wrote the song 7 years earlier, in 1953, when he was just 15. He's trying to convince his date to stay past her 10p.m. curfew.

It was Glenn Frey, not the whole band. Jackson gave him the song Take It Easy he had been working on during that time.

Did good stuff with Ry Cooder too.
You’re one of the few who have genuine reactions and truly LISTEN. It’s refreshing because it ain’t fake. It’s thoughtful. Appreciate you man.
RIP David Lindley
i was a bar band roadie and a stage hand for a couple of years about the time this came out. it's always had a special place in my heart.
"Stay" was originally recorded by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs and released in 1960. Ironically, the song is under 2 minutes long.

Bruce’s speech was so good. I was impressed with how much time he must have put into it. Funny, irreverent, and total respect for Jackson.
Paying homage to the roadies, such an amazing storyteller. Grew up in the 70’s, still on my playlist!
