One of those cheering fans was my wife who was at this concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 1977. She said it was the final encore at a great concert and nobody in the audience expected it because they had not recorded this on any album up to this point. That same summer, I was a roadie for a band in the area, so I totally appreciate Jackson giving props to the roadies.

David Lindley, the LA session guitarist and multi-instrumentalist best known for his slide guitar work with Jackson Browne, has died at the age of 78. His death was confirmed to the LA Times on March 3, although no cause of death was given. Jackson ends his shows with this song.

Dunno how many times I've heard this amazing anthem to life on the road and the people who live it, and make the music happen, as the finale at of one of Jackson's concerts. I've seen him 17 times now...
David Lindley is the guy playing the lap steel guitar and singing falsetto during the "Stay" half of this performance. Rosemary Butler is the beautiful woman with the fantastic set of pipes.
Hoping you dive deeper into Jackson's music but - a gentle warning/FYI; Jackson never pulled any punches when it came to expressing his thoughts. Some of his later work is what some would call political but I think it's the view of someone who cares about civil rights and how we, as travelers on this good ship Earth, can try to do what's right and live our lives peacefully, honestly and graciously.

"Stay" was written and originally recorded by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs in 1960. (The original lyrics were about Daddy not minding rather than the roadies!).
Also covered by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, The Hollies, Cyndi Lauper and probably many others.

Not sure if you realise that "Stay" is not actually a Jackson Browne song. It was first released in 1960, by Maurice Williams. Probably the best-known version was the 1963 recording by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, featuring Frankie's falsetto. There's also a 1963 Hollies version (an important British group that you also haven't reacted to!).

@@rickwelch8464 Thanks for being one of thousands of people who automatically defend UA-cam reactors against any type of criticism whatsoever. First of all, he doesn't just "go onto a site" -- you can see him looking up information on a variety of pages. Second of all, he mostly depends on Wikipedia, which is fine. Here's what it says on the Wikipedia page he was looking at:
"Eventually "The Load-Out" segues into an interpretation of Maurice Williams' 1960 hit "Stay", sung by Browne, Rosemary Butler, and Lindley.[1] Lindley sings the falsetto in the second chorus (Rosemary Butler sings in the first)."
So the info IS there, and is hardly a "random nugget" but it does contain everything that he missed, and that other commenters on this page are trying to explain to him.
My point remains: he spends a LOT of time reading background information, but still manages to miss key facts.

I was so in love with the song in junior high. I initially just had the single and it was so frustrating because when it reached the end of Loadout, I had to lift the needle up and flip the 45 RPM single over and then put the needle back down real fast in order to continue. But of course later I got the iconic Running on Empty album and they flow into each other.
I loved all of that back then but it's funny now that I'm older, when I hear Running On Empty, it takes on a lot of new meaning. You really deserve to check that one out for sure.

I miss those days. No phones. We had to talk to each other in person. No school shootings. No bullies on social media. You just cant beat the 80’s

The falsetto vocals were done by the fantastic lap steel guitar player David Lindley. He passed away about a year ago.

Jackson was Asylum Record's Storyteller almost every song's lyrics are poetry that is carried by the music. Had most of Jackson Browne's albums from mid 70s to mid 80s, each one I would listen to Side A flip and Side B.

Jackson Browne has Native American heritage and my cousin (who is a celebrity in the Native American music world) met him at a music fest some years ago. She said he was such a great man and I believe her.

I was fortunate enough to see Jackson Brown at the Fox Theater in Atlanta GA in the late 70's. It was a truly awesome show. He did this song as well as another called, These Days with members of the Allman Brothers. Awe inspiring all around.

Sadly, David Lindley died a few months ago. I believe from the after-effects of covid they got at the beginning of the pandemic. He and Jackson worked together for 50 + years. I am grateful I saw him, middle seat 3rd row, play with Jackson at the "Downhill From Everywhere " tour at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado on my 70th birthday, Sept 25, 2022. RIP Mr. Lindley

Sadly, I recognized the late Jim Gordon on drums. He was not the drummer on the Running On Empty album or the US tour, but he was at this BBC concert. Jim was an amazing talent who played with many of the greatest artists of the era and appeared on many of the top albums -- including with Derek & the Dominos. He was suffering from undiagnosed schizophrenia and in 1983 murdered his mother, and spent the rest of his life in prison, where he died last year.

One of the songs from Running On Empty called Nothing But Time was recorded on the tour bus while they were riding down the highway. You can hear the hum from the bus and tires in the background of the song.
The Running On Empty album is flawless, from start to finish.
