The crowd cheering at the end is not a dramatic effect - the entire Running on Empty album was recorded live, he was writing the songs on tour and then performing them. The versions are all from different shows during the tour. Jackson Browne is a brilliant songwriter with a gorgeous voice. He is close with all the Laurel Canyon musicians - Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles. The Eagles song "Take It Easy" was written by Jackson Browne, but he only had the first verse and the chorus. He was stuck there, so he gave it to his friend, Glen Frey, who added the second and third verses and made the song into a huge hit from the Eagles' eponymously titled first album.
Hoping Phil/Sam check this comment. Load Out/Stay is the combination song Phil was talking about at the end of the video. Every other comment on this video is suggesting it, and it is CRIMINAL that it does not get more airplay on the radio than it does.

But I think it’s the music era that people most identify with emotionally that becomes the “best” for them. For most people it’s the music they discovered when they were tweens and teens. JB has an enormous amazing catalog - but if you look through the comments you'll see one song repeated again & again - Load Out/Stay. You both will LOVE it!!!! As a side note, I saw just saw Jackson Browne & James Taylor headline a concert two years ago at Saratoga and they were awesome together, often covering each other's songs - and eventually hitting the stage at the same time!!!
Banger is right❣️ Jackson Browne is a great talent indeed. I love this song so much. I still remember all the lyrics, too. Other songs I'd recommend: "The Load Out/Stay" (two separate songs combined) Also, " The Pretender" "Somebody's Baby" just to name a few. I never knew he was born in Germany, so thanks, Sam, for that info. ❤
One of the best singer/songwriters of the 70's/80's/up til now. Jackson Browne is worth a deep dive. Songs like 'The Pretender', 'For A Dancer', 'Before The Deluge', 'Song For Adam', 'Looking Into You', 'Fountain Of Sorrow', 'Your Bright Baby Blues', 'These Days' and many, many more are so great... Thanks for the reaction!
Jackson Browne is an outstanding musician, singer, songwriter. Running on Empty is one of my favorite songs by Jackson. It was used in the movie Running on Empty, which is based on a true story of a couple who are fleeing authorities due to their anti war activities. It’s actually a pretty good movie. The other song by Jackson is the Load Out, written about the many people who set up and take down equipment etc for concerts. So glad you’re reacting to Jackson Browne. You will want to do more. Thank you. 👏👏🇨🇦
This is his signature song but The Pretender, The Load Out/Stay, Somebody's Baby, Lawyers In Love and Doctor My Eyes are just a few of his other biggies.
He was an army brat born in Germany, and is one of the great singer/songwriters of the era. And the thing about music is that it bonds with the memories of when you first heard it. I associate the music of my youth with those times & memories, so it will always have a special place in my heart. But in the case of the ‘60’s & ‘70’s, I was fortunate to have grown up with the best as well. Love your reviews.✌️❤️🎶
Jackson Browne is one is the best singer-songwriters of the 20th century. "These Days" is my favorite, but he's got dozens of great tunes. Can't go wrong.
Jackson is a fabulous singer/songwriter. He has so many great songs. He also helped launch the careers of so many notable artists including Stevie Ray Vaughan. The Load Out/Stay and Before The Deluge are two of my favorites of his. Bruce Springsteen gave the Rock & Roll induction speech for Jackson, it was one of the coolest I have heard. Very fitting for Jackson!
I'd say the two songs that made his career were "Doctor My Eyes" and "Take It Easy." There's other hits by him to listen to, but those would be the top two that drew attention to him and made him a star.
When I was a kid, I had never heard of Jackson Browne. Then I listened to an interview with Bob Seger and they asked him who he listens to and he said Jackson Browne.
And not just recorded on stage during a performance for an audience. Some of the songs were recorded on the bus, backstage, etc. All that additional 'work' must have taken even more out of their energy reserves.
When I first heard this song (circa 1978) I never once thought it had anything to do with being 'on the road' with a band. I always thought it was about a man looking back on his life, and seeing that he NEVER knew where he was going, and when he looked around at those who used to give him strength (direction) he finally came to realize that even they honestly did not know where they were going to end up.
The song, and that whole album, was recorded live. Mostly on stage, but also from hotel rooms and their tour bus. First time an artist did a live album of all new songs. Can't go wrong with Jackson - he's got dozens of great songs. Try The Pretender and/or Doctor My Eyes next, both of which were big hits.
I spent some time with Jackson Brown in his studio in Santa Monica, California. He was very open and easy to talk to, and gave me advice on how to navigate the pitfalls of dealing with record companies. He played me some songs from a new album that he was working on at the time. One in particular was called Too Many Angels. He also gave me a glimpse into his writing process and played me some ideas from a cassette player he used to make sure he didn’t forget his ideas. I wonder if he still has that cassette player? I still have mine. Please do a reaction on Doctor My Eyes which is one of his two top 10 hits. Believe it or not he never had a number one which really surprises me because he’s the real deal. 🕊❤️🎼
That's crazy that you've never heard of Jackson Browne and you live on this Earth. He's an amazing singer-songwriter that started out writing for other performers and then decided to keep some of this stuff for himself to sing. I find it very strange that you would never have heard of them but that happens.
That's one of the things that made the 70's music so good -- they were all incorporating different genres into their own sound. And there was an insane amount of talented people who created an insane variety of great music.
Yes, Phil, the 70's are filled with tons of great music and bands. Some bands you are yet to discover. Having 45 years of music experience I consider the 70's for the most part the rock decade and the 80 the metal decade. This song "Running On Empty" is a popular metaphor for being exhausted, but the phrase had a much more literal meaning for Browne when it came to him. Browne wrote it while he was driving back and forth to the studio each day to make his album The Pretender. He told Rolling Stone: "I was always driving around with no gas in the car, I just never bothered to fill up the tank because - how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks."
This song, from his album of the same name, was released in 1977, and was his first work since he was devastated by his wife's suicide the previous year. He has stated that this song was partially inspired by his memory of her, and since her death he'd felt that he was 'running on empty' and without purpose.
I named my best friend Jackson Brown. He was a chocolate Lab who stood by me for over 10 years. He's chillin' with the Lord. He was equally as cool as Jackson Browne, the man. Great channel. Thanks for all you do.
That's cool! When I was 14 and riding my bike back home from high school I had a dog run up and bite me... The owners were screaming, "Jackson Browne, get back here." ( I don't think he was a lab)
The perfect compliment to this song (this recording IS live!) is "The Load Out/Stay" - also live from this album - and it's absolutely about being on tour and is essentially a thank you to the roadies and the fans. This is what you were referring to at the end of your commentary and it's amazing.
The album of the same name is a unique live album. Recorded entirely while on the road. On stage, on the tour bus, back stage, & hotel rooms. Rarely shows up on the best of lists of great live albums but definitely belongs there
May suggesting The Load Out/Stay It is a classic about life on the road Be sure to do both together. Because there are some videos of them being done separately . They are meant to be played together.
Outstanding songwriter and musician! So happy you’re finally hearing him. He co wrote with the Eagles on some of their titles (Take it Easy) and has a really profound song “Doctor my Eyes” that he wrote at 16. He has a wonderful song about being on road “The Load Out / Stay” ( live) you should check out.
Love you guys. Your smart, the 70s is the best. I was a teenager and it was wild and music was diverse. I met Jackson in the back alley of 5th and Broadway in Downtown LA in 1983. He lowered me down a signature from the 3rd floor window of the building his was practing at. Doctor my eyes is his best work ever.
Great song awesome reaction! I always get a Bruce Springsteen (The Boss) vibe from this song. In the early years Jackson Brown did some collaborations with Glenn Frey (RIP) of The Eagles and Gregg Allman (RIP) of The Allman Brothers Band. I love "Doctor My Eyes" and "The Pretender" two classic songs like this one.
Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Jackson Browne, don't forget the final "e", twice in concert, once on each coast, and he put on a great show each time. He supported a lot of social causes, especially No Nukes, and he backed up what he believed in. For some more goodies from Jackson try "The Load Out>Stay" (Live) and "The Pretender". Lots more where that came from.
One of my favorites on my daily play list . The lyrics are just so awesome. "I dont know when that road turned on to this road im on" hits home for a lot of people i think. Great reaction keep rocking !
These Days, In the Shape of a Heart, For a Dancer, Fountain of Sorrow, The Pretender and about 100 more songs. Saw him in 1978 for the first time. Seen him about 20 more since. Always great and always has a fantastic band.
Definitely get deeper into his catalog he's associated with a lot of the greats. The whole Troubadour crowd, including JD Souther and Linda Ronstadt, he was Gregg Allman's roommate for a time, toured on the no nukes tour with Bonnie raitt, Crosby stills Nash and Bruce Springsteen plus many others. Still performs and has had an illustrious carrier.
Jackson Browne is brilliant! Everything from thoughtful lyrics to his delivery of a song and the band also it's all A+! Keep digging and you will feel the same! Thank you for this
One of the great poets of American music . His songs have been covered by everyone. Late For The Sky is my favorite JB song. Joan Baez does a great version of Fountain of Sorrow
Good thing for me about 70s music is…I was a kid so many songs like this takes me right back to single digits when I didn’t have a worry in the world, running into the 🌞
OHHHHHH - ONE OF MY FAVS!!! LOVE The Loadout / Stay by him!! SUCH a DIFFERENT SOUND by him and he is SO TALENTED and his LYRICS are ALWAYS: SO GOOD!! HUGS, YA'LL!! ENJOY!!!
You are very sharp to note the dualism of Joy and Sadness, of hope tempered by "the resignation that living brings" (a line from his song, "Before the Deluge." Jackson is, IMHO, the very best songwriter of t he 70s. And yes, this track was recorded live. Check out his masterpiece album, "Late For the Sky." You won't be disappointed - only further impressed.
I am amazed, always, when people, anyone, don't know Jackson Brown. Listen to "Late for the Sky" It was featured in 'Taxi Driver's and he was in 'Fast Times at Ridgemondt High
This is one of the very few artists I have alluded to previously where live performances are concerned. Jackson Browne is a genius. A lot of what you hear on some of his best work was recorded on his tour bus. One of the most unique artists because live is how he worked. Here is a tidbit of trivia. He was roommates with Glen Frey before the Eagles and gave him one of the Eagles early hits, Take It Easy. His catalog is extensive. You won’t run out of masterpieces any time soon. Before you get caught up in the popular songs and well known hits, I hope you’ll take a little time to listen to 2 songs that aren’t hits, but showcase ability to connect with an audience and really touch the heart. Those songs are Love Needs A Heart and That Girl Could Sing. After that, Boulevard, Somebody’s Baby, Lawyers In Love, The Loadout/Stay and many others. Much Love ❤️
Not only did he grow up in Cal but also the same area as: The Doors, CSN& Y, Joni Mitchell, etc AND The Eagles played their first written song at a party at his house, Wictchie Woman their only song at the time so they where on Repeat!! 😅☮️
Shout out to the amazing band that helped make this a classic song: Rosemary Butler and Doug Haywood on backing vocals Danny Kortchmar - guitar David Lindley - lap steel guitar Craig Doerge - piano Leland Sklar - bass guitar Russ Kunkel - drums These are all legendary session musicians who have recorded on literally thousands of albums with the biggest artists in music
he used to have concerts to support a school in Sedona Az. every year, saw many great up and coming band at his shows, saw him get booed off the stage one year trying to announce the act that was coming up after Keb Mo... EVERYBODY wanted Keb Mo to do some more, he is not only a great songwriter and entertainer but the good his benefit concerts supported and the new bands that got recognition was amazing. Red Necked Friend and The Pretender are some of his lost masterpieces. thank you. oh ya, he did a lot with Warren Zevon, somebody else I would love to see you react to, his songs can be a lil... eye opening though... you forgot to mention that he was born in Germany because his father was stationed at an American military base there. again, thank you. have a great day!
In accordance with the previous comments, this was recorded live, the crowd reaction is not added on. Plus the fact that this is the only recording that Jackson Browne will allow to be played anywhere, on any radio station in the country. Kudos to the sound man, especially with the equipment they had in 1977. This was the first song into the concert, the performance was flawless and the sound came out perfect. Jackson Browne even said one time this was better than in the studio.
Jackson Browne was also one of those legendary "citizens" of Laurel Canyon, LA in the early 70ies too. The song was released in 1982, his biggest hit in the US charts.
The crowd cheering at the end is not a dramatic effect - the entire Running on Empty album was recorded live, he was writing the songs on tour and then performing them. The versions are all from different shows during the tour. Jackson Browne is a brilliant songwriter with a gorgeous voice. These Days, In the Shape of a Heart, For a Dancer, Fountain of Sorrow, The Pretender and about 100 more songs. Saw him in 1978 for the first time. Seen him about 20 more since. Always great and always has a fantastic band.
Hey Boomers! They don't know what a photo album is. Young Whipper Snappers 👨🏿🦳👩🦳🧑🏻🦳👵🏼
It was Live from a Live album!. Got to see Jackson Brown and Boston in concert in San Diego, CA in 1977. They both sounded great live.
Jackson co-wrote “Take It Easy” with Glenn Frey of the Eagles, and it became the Eagles first hit. Jackson recorded it too.
LoadOut/Stay, Doctor My Eyes, and the best song ever we written about the working class, The Pretender. The lyrics are the key to enjoying Jackson.
Love Jackson Browne music 🎵❤
Jackson Browne is brilliant! Everything from thoughtful lyrics to his delivery of a song and the band also it's all A+! Keep digging and you will feel the same! Thank you for this
Jackson Browne has a lot of songs I like but Before the Deluge is probably my favorite if I had to choose one.
The Load Out/Stay are also terrific.
One of my all time favourite albums. I still play the whole album regularly
One of the great poets of American music . His songs have been covered by everyone. Late For The Sky is my favorite JB song. Joan Baez does a great version of Fountain of Sorrow
To me, top 5 greatest rock song of all time.
An icon for 50 years…talk about a rabbit hole and a half.
The entire Running On Empty album is FANTASTIC! I used to smeak into my sister's room and listen to it.
Good thing for me about 70s music is…I was a kid so many songs like this takes me right back to single digits when I didn’t have a worry in the world, running into the 🌞
In the 70s in Central Illinois, it was REO Speedwagon country, check them out.
If you can drive and not crank this up, you’re from another planet.
To grew up in the 70ths with her music every day the radio in the air. It was fantastic. Greetings from the Netherlands
Shout out to the amazing band that helped make this a classic song:
Rosemary Butler and Doug Haywood on backing vocals
Danny Kortchmar - guitar
David Lindley - lap steel guitar
Craig Doerge - piano
Leland Sklar - bass guitar
Russ Kunkel - drums
These are all legendary session musicians who have recorded on literally thousands of albums with the biggest artists in music
Leland Sklar is another legend
One of the all-time great wordsmiths!!
Jackson Browne one of a lot of peoples all time favorites🎉
he used to have concerts to support a school in Sedona Az. every year, saw many great up and coming band at his shows, saw him get booed off the stage one year trying to announce the act that was coming up after Keb Mo...
It’s great that you’re honest enough to admit the 70s were the greatest decade of Rock and Roll!
