I endorse REMO heads and use coated ambassadors on top and clear bottom. Kick batter is Coated emperor and front is fiberskin. No hole or pillow. Wide open!!! I tune them a little above med tension. The top and bottom are very close in pitch. This kind of kit sounds great to me tuned up a bit. Thanks for the comments! Cheers
Carter McLean I’m a huge fan of the wide open tuning and absolutely nothing in the kick drum. I’ve got a 70s Acrolite, just like the one you’re using in this video. I play around with tunings, but because it sounds great at any tuning, I’ve hard time leaving it alone. I really like the sounds you’re getting out of yours. I don’t use a drum dial often, but if u do, could u Grace is with the tension # u use? Thanks for all of your wonderful playing. You’ve diverted my attention from Bonham for the time being. Lol. Just to let you know how much you’ve impressed me💁🏻♂️. I see myself in your style. I’m trying to get where you are. I’ve got a lot of work though. Thank you, Carter!!!!
1964 ludwig 20 12 14 with 14 acrolite snare. old 14 A zildjian hats, 22 prototype ride on my right. My left 20 constantinople light ride. Cheers! Thanks for listening. Im going to post another this week. New Remo heads sound amazing.
The sound quality of this and many others of yours, sound incredible. The room sound is present, which puts the listener in the room. The tuning is perfect. Love the grooves you explore and how you approach them. Lots of funk and soul, like it flows effortlessly. It’s both, incredibly artistic, rooted, yet boundary-less. Keep up the great work!
I love the way that bass drums sound without any pillows in them or excessive dampening. All I need is a slight dampening if any. Other than that, it’s wide-open and projects the sound better. 12”X 10” rack tom, 14”X 14” & 16” X 16” floor toms, 26”X 14” kick drum, & either a 14”X 6.5” steel shell Pearl Sensitone Elite, Maxwin by a Pearl 14”X 5.50 wood snare, or a 14”X 8” Pearl Limited Edition Maple snare is what I use in my setup. The kick drum is actually an older Pearl Marching bass drum that I had spurs installed on to convert it to a kit bass drum.
The one and only thing that is missing in ONLY this video, is a full shot camera angle of this kit. I’m playing this video over and over this morning I have a late 70s Acrolite, looks exactly like yours and I’m trying to tune mine, to yours. You’ve got that thing whistlin’ !!! Great drumming!
It's already 2021 and in the meanwhile you've demoed literally tons of drums, all great stuff indeed, no joke, but IMHO this 60s Ludwig Downbeat kit and this humble Acrolite are still the best sounding drums you ever demoed!!!!
I found that ludwig snare drum just didn't cut thru the loud guitars of my band. A great studio snare maybe. A couple of my favorite snares were a metal Priemier snare or my slingerland wood , both 5.5 "'s . Loud and cutting and great sounding. At one time I had a gold 8"Camco custom snare and i kick myself for selling it.
I use & Prefer Remo Heads myself. I use either Coated Emperors or Clear Pinstripes as batter heads and Clear Ambassadors for all the resonant heads. For my 26”X 14” (Bonham size) kick drum , I use a Coated Emperor on the kick side & A Coated Ambassador on the reasonant side, which are both slightly dampened by a single felt strip on either side. For my 22” X 16” , I use a Remo Coated Powerstroke III heads on both sides , with the front head ported. I use a 1980s Pearl Drums & Zildjian A series cymbals. I have been using Remo drumheads as long as I’ve been playing drums, and have found nothing else that compares to their sound and quality, especially when being used on older drum sets such as vintage Ludwig‘s.
What's the ride man?? Tasty K's i take it.. My friend Jack Callnegia from here in Aus sat in with you for Lion King so I decided to check ya out and I'm loving you're style man. I play around Perth in some musicals as much as I can ( Perth being a smaller city) and hope to progress to higher level when I move to the states in a few years. Larry Lelli who I think was playing for Jersey boys last time I heard (on broadway) also said he was happy to teach me for a while if i came to NY for a bit. Hopefully we can hang some day as well man! Love picking pit musos brains. Looking forward to seeing some more kick ass old school chops from you!
What heads & snare wires did you use with that acrolite? And how did you tune it? It sounds incredible! I don't think I've heard a less boxy snare - it's got so much depth and resonance!
Great setup...love the kit with that workhorse acrolite. I have a couple questions if you have a moment: What new Remo skins did you add? What is your tuning method with this vintage kit? I look forward to more of your tasteful grooves and approach. Thanks for sharing your craft.
Carter I know this is an old vid but could you give me a tip on how to get my acro to sound like that?...I just cant get to not sound so full..maybe it is the room I am in?..big fan.. thanks
How in the time travelling f@k does he play like that. Everytime I watch a Mclean video my face ends up looking like Tyrone biggums when he's at his wits end.....with my mouth wide open. Like whaaa?

Not even a felt strip on the bass drum heads?
It looks like Evans skin.
@@rickrick9510you are right. Endorses Remo heads, but this kit has Evans heads on it.
When I bought the kit not long ago it had Evans heads on em. I endorse Remo and put coated ambassadors on. Love that sound
Oh how the turned have tables
Those drums sound so beautiful
This was one of first Carter videos I stumbled upon, needless to say,I instantly became a fan.

Love the way Carter playes!

I watch this over and over, the sound of these drums is incredible!
Totally musical style, groundbreaking for the instrument. Just can’t wait to approach my drums in a new way. Thank you!
Thanks yall. I will be posting more videos every week. Different themes.
This tuning is perfect
Quand je l’écoute j’ai tout de suite envie de jouer, ce mec est inspirant, musicien magnifique.
WOW! Why haven't I heard about this phenomenal drummer before!
He's in the Lion King.
@@rollzolo What do you mean?

Video demonstrates why you're as good if not better than any drummer on the planet alive today -- this is perfect. It's all about that groove.
the Acrolyte ...unreal ... you can get one for like 90 bucks
I use a Remo coated ambassador or a Remo CS reverse dot on most of my snares including this acrolite. Cheers
Love your playing and sound Carter... bravo!!!
This kit sounds so so good. No doubt a lot of that is coming out of your hands. Great playing man. 👍🏻👌🏻
It's cool how things come back around. :) I've seen a kit just like this on Facebook marketplace. Although it is out of my range at the moment.
who gives it thumbs down?! superbe playing!!
Man, I seriously love your content. I duno why it appears so hard to find youtube videos of people just playing drums for funs sake
Jon I use it on back beat stuff mostly. They are great for that.
You and the drums both sound classic and have great tone. Thx
It's already 2021 and in the meanwhile you've demoed literally tons of drums, all great stuff indeed, no joke, but IMHO this 60s Ludwig Downbeat kit and this humble Acrolite are still the best sounding drums you ever demoed!!!!
I love his Heritage Green kit the best
DAMN. those drums sound so good. As do all your kits!
Nice playing! Very musical with chops such a rare thing to see today. Drums sound awesome as well.
Inspirational!
I loved this. Your playing is refreshing and inspiring. Love your groove

Great sounding drums. I have a 1965 be bop kit but with a 16 x 16 ft. That acrolite is killer as well. Awesome playing too!

Sure those drums sound fantastic. Really nice, but my hunch is it's your playing. Beautiful! Looks effortless. Keep up the great playing.

2020 anyone?
2023
Hope you can make one video about your tuning technique
Best regards
BRAVO!!!
Ouucsh, that snare is crackin'! ;) lovin' it! :)
I wish we could be best friends
He does kind of remind me of the one high school buddy who is less of a dick than everyone else.
If you are a drum, cymbal, or hat...that might be a possibility.
Great playing and great sounding kit
Nice drum set👍
Hey carter, do you remember which drumheads (bottom and batter) and snare wires were you using in this acrolite?
Yeeeeaaa very cool 👌
elle a du son grand-mère j'aime.

Clean, nice,warm!)
Are you using the single mic there to capture all the drums/cymbals? Sounds great.
That’s my snare!!!
😍👏
Would you be willing to explain or share the sticking pattern on the crash/tom/snare fill from about 1:06 to 1:10? That is so cool!
Can a snare stand, choke off a snare drum’s tone/sound? I’m thinking on experimenting with this........
Hey nice Drums..looks like Evans heads on toms...or am I mistaken..Cheers keep up the groove..
Hey I love your sound so much, and I was wondering what sticks do you use?
Master !!
Sweet!
They are Evans Heads
wow nice sound man! How is your mic setup in this video?
Just listening.
Carter I know this is an old vid but could you give me a tip on how to get my acro to sound like that?...I just cant get to not sound so full..maybe it is the room I am in?..big fan.. thanks
Hiii. Very Nice kit and your drumming. What snare is?
Love that Acrolite. What do you find yourself using it for most?

What is that Zildjian Ride? Sounds so good!
Your playing is great- love the thick groove -and the kit sounds stellar! What are the specs on the kit, cymbals, heads, etc..?
this is how I want my Acrolite to sound. It has Evans heads on there right now. Ew. I can't get with it. Do you have string snare wires or strap?
I had a rogers just like that....Then it was stolen. :(
What snare wires did you use?
Greazy mo fo
Dear Carter, Would you consider selling this kit?
It sold to a buddy who owns a studio in BK
I like Ludwig but I’m getting tired of the oyster pearl & sparkle (glitter) finishes.
Ringo Starr used this kit
So tempted to write a salty comment about a better drummer playing it, but Paul McCartney already went there.
You look sorta stoned/zoned out, im going to try and play like that.
How'd that work out? Lol
SNARE?
vintage Ludwig Acrolite
Evans heads?
WHAT KIND OF HEAD DO YOU USE? EVANS J1?
