Went to see him at the Village Gate in New York in the very early 70's. Loved his set but Miles basically had contempt for the audience, scowling at us, clearing his spit valve practically in our faces as we were seating below the elevated stage, and walking behind the stage curtain when he finished his solo. In Contrast Eddie Harris' set was fun, upbeat and he appeared happy to be performing for us. Miles was one of the most innovative musicians in my time and many of his sidemen became band leaders afterwards. He deserves a lot of credit.
Yeah. Miles was Miles. When he came back in the early 80's he seemed a little more mellow. I saw him in the Kool Jazz Festival in 83, 84 and 85. I wasn't close enough to interact with him, but he did seem to be playing to the audience. 83 was my favorite set, with Mike Stern and John Scofield on guitars. Fond memories.
Miles was the greatest. I saw him in Cleveland when I was 16. I got to go backstage during an intermission to ask him for his autograph. He was sitting on some stairs fiddling with his horn. When the adult that accompanied me backstage asked him if I could get his autograph he just looked at us for a second and went back to fiddling with his horn so we returned to our seats. It didn’t bother us because we were warned. We considered it Miles being Miles. 😎
@@a.nobodys.nobody Well it was back the 60s so I think it may have been at convention center downtown or possibly the Masonic auditorium on Euclid Avenue also downtown.
Miles was one of the greatest along with all the names mentioned. None were better than the other. They all had their own thing that none of the others had.
The man won 8 Grammys' and put out over 100 records and toured! He died with a net worth of $1M? I know he had his issues but, I also blame the record companies for screwing him over! I think Hendrix died broke!
Because of his utter contempt for everybody, especially his audience, he does not deserve to be called the greatest. There are others that are and were much more technically appealing and much more deserving of being called the greatest than Davis.
Exactly. People want to criticise but imagine headlining a gig at a prestigeous nightclub, only to get a beat-down by the cops when you step outside for a breath of air during intermission - and that's just one incident.
Slowest dialogue and only 2 seconds of Miles actually playing ? Have you added all the actors / musicians in the credits ? You cats should be banned 🙂 Did his family get any APPRAA credit ???
Freddie Hubbard man. I can listen to him play all day. Miles, I gotta fast forward twenty minutes into the brew before it gets going. Overrated and a lot of attitude that often didn't show in his attack of the notes.
The Miles Davis Autobiography, with Quincy Troupe, is an excellent (and often hilarious) read. Highly recommended.
Terribly presented material.

Greatest trumpeter of ALL time ?? Fats Navarro, Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong- yes

Absolutely love Miles Davis but I would love to see you do one on Lee Morgan that is my favorite trumpet player
LEE MORGAN was great. So was CHET BAKER too
Lee Morgan was the best for me personally
There is an award-winning documentary available on Lee Morgan that’s worth buying. “I Called Him Morgan” (2016)
Miles said in his book he was scared of Lee
The best
The song "STELLA by starlight " was his best.
I love Chet Baker the most
Chet Baker is my favorite as well. Miles is also wonderful.
Clark Terry is mine, but yeah Chet was truly great.
I agree. I love Chet Baker over everyone else. His album, Chet Baker Chet is better than Miles Davis Kind of Blue.
@@davidhunternyc1Kind Of Blue is my favorite, tomorrow I will listen to your album by Chet Baker.
Stella wasn't his song, nor did he ever claim it was his.
Louis Armstrong was the greatest jazz musician. Miles would have agreed.
Nah. Ellington , Tatum & Parker
In terms of breaking barriers, setting new trends innovative composition he was the greatest
Dizzy Gillespie...Clifford Brown... Chet Baker... Art Farmer... Shorty Rogers... Carmell Jones...
These were better
Bix lives.
Miles was one of the greatest along with all the names mentioned. None were better than the other. They all had their own thing that none of the others had.
@SergioOctavioFiorito,Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd,Jon Faddish,Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Henderson ,Booker Little, Blue Mitchell 😂😂😂😂
@@williemakeit2346 Wise post 👍
He wasn't the greatest trumpeter of all time. He was the most important jazz theoretician of all time.
Ridiculous statement
@@ivoryconsort How so?

❤❤❤❤❤ I loved his music. I will always cherish the two concerts that I saw up close enough to look right in his face. I saw him smile.
Are you certain it wasn't a grimace?!
Louis Armstrong was the greatest Trumpeter of all time!
Nah
Debatable!
al hirt
Well, one of the greatest
AMEN 👍
Kind of Blue. Greatest Jazz Album of all times.
Köln Concert
Miles and Herbie practically invented fusion - that is HUGE
Eddie Harris invented jazz fusion
Larry Coryell invented fusion! He had the first fusion band, the "Free Spirits"! This was in 1965, if memory serves.
Heard him in Toronto at the Colonial Tavern on Yonge Street … a unique musician and fascinating person to watch. Incredibke memorable! 🎼🎼🎼
Loved Miles Davis, to me, the greatest trumpeter!
That’s alright Miles, I’ll be riding with you until my time comes!❤
Until THE WHEELS COME OFF!!! ❤❤❤
I just came to see what his son is going to say, because I always thought he looked kind of scary
What did his son say?
“…the greatest trumpet player of all time.”??? Quite an introductory statement…
I switched off shorty after that, esp. after seeing the images randomly non-contemporary, public-access sources. Nasty and amateurish
You’ve got to separate the man from the art. At least that’s what people keep telling me.
verissimo !!!!
Respect , Peace Be Upon Him
I always loved rock and blues so when I watched Miles the first time I wasn’t expecting what I saw and heard OMFG yes!
ok, ok...
I named my son Miles.🎺😎
@@jaymo8206 Does he spit at you ?😂
He was a very angry man.
Enjoyed watching this, I always admired his talent and loved listening to his horn.

@shannyb1671 ...He was mean!
So does your Mammy
He used to beat Cicely Tyson, when they were together.
@@saranagh7097so what about you? What level are you with God?
Miles had swag; Louis was probably the greatest trumpeter of the 20th century! Followed closely by Miles mentor Dizzy!
Great bio. Another troubled icon that brought enjoyment to many.
Miles was an a-hole. End of story.
Cliford Brown is GOAT
SO WHAT!- Genius- Blue Note’s favorite child ❤😢
Except he mostly recorded for columbia. I think he recorded with prestige more than he ever did blue note.
Miles favourite trumpet player was Harry James.
What?! Thats the first I've heard that he was on anti retroviral meds insinuating he had HIV??
Yes and he caught pneumonia...I heard it before too but the media hushed it.
And now this channel is 100% dedicated to damning diddy 😂
Kinda Blue is the greatest album ever made.
As…le.
Its definitely up there
Surely in contention
100%
‘Kinda’ Blue!? 🙈🙈🙈
The biggest secret going around was that he died from complications brought on by AIDS.
Miles is Miles.
Period.

Greatest trumpet player of all time? 😂
Fats Navarro was better
@@EdwardJackson-u9z well it’s
debatable who is the greatest of all time truly is. But to plainly make that statement about any trumpeter is laughable
Maynard Ferguson
Everything comes from them. They were lucky to be alive when they were is suppose but yes the greatest. There’s level to it
Dizzy Gillespie.
I love “Spanish Key” from the Bitches Brew album
I love Miles Davis, Brilliant. I saw him with Prince. 2xbrilliant. Other than that, who is the commentator in this documentary.
Donald Byrd was the _funkiest_ trumpeter, then Eddie Henderson & Tom Browne.
His estate was only worth $1 million at the time of his death? Wow. I thought it would be much more.
most musicians are far less wealthy than people imagine. and jazz musicians even less so.
I dare any of you to live his life

Or Wynton Marcellus?
