    I enjoy watching boxing, but I can't say I'm a serious fan. I found out about Hearns through the anime _Hajime no Ippo_ . When you watch a sports anime, you figure that what you're seeing in the cartoon is an exaggeration of reality, so I was expecting a more low-key version of Mashiba's fighting style when I first watched footage of Hearns. But holy shit! Watching Hearns' actual boxing was more spectacular than what I saw in the cartoon! The crazy range he has with his lead hand makes you feel like he could hit the other guy from all the way across the ring, and I don't think I've ever seen a better example of "punching with evil intentions" than chopping right! I get chills watching it, it's so brutal and efficient. The only thing that comes close for me is watching Joe Frazier's left hook.

    Hearns is easily my favorite of the four kings. He's unfortunately the most forgotten because of not being able to beat Sugar Ray Leonard (even though by many accounts he won the second fight) but the man was truly not only a magnificent boxer but someone not afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. Hearns fights were always exciting and gave fans their money's worth even though there was many occasions he could have easily laid back and fought a more conservative long range fight and possibly eked out a points victory.
    It should also be mentioned that the guy not only had titles in five weight divisions, but these divisions ranged from Welterweight to fucking Cruiserweight. That is truly insane and just goes to show how absolutely dominant this man's skillset ones.
    Hearns might be the greatest example of style complimenting physical gifts and attributes, and the way he moved in the ring was truly graceful.

    Starting the punch with the elbow brings a lot of power to the fist by just the acceleration, it's like a whip, using leverage instead of raw force or mass. The mechanic is the same as if you were throwing a baseball. The acceleration you can produce by "throwing" a punch like that is crazy. Your body is made to throw things and if you move your hips too along the way that adds power to the punch.

    • @Leongon
      @Leongon 2 роки тому

      @@wuutnopepe613 Yes, exactly like trying to throw something. The difference is that throwing doesn't include a point of impact for your fist. In any case if you are going to use the whole body, you're better off using a regular punch that allows you to put all that weight behind it instead of a whipping one that allows you to still generate a strong impact based on just speed of your arm and keep your lower half free to stay on the move, controlling the distance.

    The motor City Cobra. I would never have wanted to face that guy on his prime. His power was mostly technical. I know some of you will say it was a gift or genetics, but study the technique. Look at what Manny Stewart did for Lennox Lewis and Tyson Fury, who really wasn't a big puncher until he met Sugar Hill. As a student of martial arts myself I can see the biomechanics in play. For greater detail check out General Choi's 6 principles of power.

    Don't think any boxer has used a long reach as good as he did. Most rely on the other persons poor distance judging but that falls apart if you meet someone who is amazing at it such as Ali. But hearns use technique and skill to really utilise that reach properly.

    Nice breakdown of 'The Hitman' he was long, lean, lanky, wiry and somewhat unorthodox likely because of his size and he was absolutely dominate. What I appreciated most about TH was for his size he knew how not to smother his punches, his footwork and as you masterful broke down had a dazzling array of power shots, ringmanship and IQ. When he dropped Duran with the right hand bomb. I thought to myself, that's the match where Duran should have rendered the legendary, "no mas!" I thought that right hand bomb killed Duran.

    A lot of people miss out on how special his stance in the ring was. He didn't completely face the boxer because he didn't need those extra two or three inches to be able to reach him with those long ass arms of his. That meant that he could come around with the powerful right without swinging from as far away and it would be on people before they could do anything about it. He's definitely a fighters fighter.

    Tommy Hearns was a beast. I know he lost to Leonard and Hagler. Be that as it may, he was one of the greatest fighter/boxers of all time... of any weight division. Sad Marvin is not with us anymore after taking the vaccine... athletes with the most strong and healthy hearts seem to suffer the worst adverse effects from that thing !!!
