Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.'s Aggressive Pressure Style & Head Movement Explained - Technique Breakdown

  • Julio Cesar Chavez is a living legend. Chavez used his interpretation of the Mexican style of boxing to win titles in multiple weight divisions, successfully defending his title over two dozen times and beginning his professional career with a 89 fight winning streak. He retired having fought 115 times, winning 107 of them, 86 of which came by knockout. Chavez achieved this using a highly aggressive pressure style, made possible in part by his skilful use of head movement. It’s equally fair to call him one of the most aggressive and one of the most defensive boxers of all time. So let’s take a look at what made Julio Cesar Chavez the pride of Mexico.

When people hear “Mexican Style Boxing” they typically just think that means you’re a brawler and rely on pressure over technique. This video more than proves that Chavez and many other people who emulate his style actually need to have an insane level of technique, finesse and toughness in order to be effective!

There's no other fighter like Chavez Sr. His skills were equalized. Got footwork, head movement, frigtening combs, was a master cutting the ring, had an iron chin, good parries, a letal liver blow, but above all that he got bravery and faced the top fighters of those days. 89 profesional fights without a loss, numbers don't lie.

I think a young Julio would win vs Floyd (side interesting back in 2002 Floyd won a very VERY stolen fight against Jose Luis Castillo. Castillo was CLEARLY better and scored more points but somehow the judges watched another fight and Floyd won. Castillo was Julio's sparring). Floyd would not be that hard for Julio's style... However, Pacquiao is another story, Manny is a more complete package of a boxer than Floyd is and Manny actually took a few tricks from Julio's own playbook, you can trace the DNA of Pacquiao's style to Julio. Hard call but at the end i agree, he would win against both.

Wow. That was an amazing breakdown. I've watched lots of Chavez's fight and I never realized how good he was defensively until now. Chavez always seemed like a brick wall that just couldn't be hurt by punching it. I always chalked up a lot of Chavez winning to him being an insanely tough counterpuncher who would absorb his opponent's damage and then begin a relentless counter assault. Now I realize there was much more going on than what I was seeing.

My father loves this fighter. I’m gonna recap some things he talked about, because I feel they add to this already excellent analysis.
First he talked about a match against a young inexperienced mexican boxer. Talented and promising, but outmatched. In that fight it was like Chavez didn’t go all out. He got his points, he won easily, but he didn’t make his opponent look helpless or pathetic, there was a sense of ... mildness? about him.
Second fight my dad talked about was much more serious. And he described the insane pressure that Chavez could deliver. But the way my father told it, it didn’t come pouring non-stop. Instead Chavez would switch it on and off. Fighting conservatively, collecting points, not quite hanging back but not fighting all-out for a few seconds ... or half a round. And then, sometimes when his opponent tried to go on the offensive and sometimes with no discernible trigger, he would deliver these periods of furious pressure. For long or short periods of time. At the end of the fight his opponent was almost completely demoralized. Just shelling up and and trying to survive the next assault, or waiting for it to start, but psychologically unable to even try to do something constructive of his own.
Third thing that impressed my father was the post fight interview. Chavez was answering questions about the fight, or the future or youth boxing or something. And he was completely calm and rational. Drying himself with a towel and talking about stuff, like he had just stepped off a treadmill. That is insane: fighters who come out of the ring are juiced on adrenaline. No matter how smart they are, you can still see it in their eyes, hear it in their voice, they were fighting moments ago and words are harder than usual. But Chavez- nothing.

Most wins in the last 100 years 107, most Kos in the last 100 years 86, most in attendance 133k in estadio Azteca vs Haugen. Nobody comes close to having so many records , Mayweather brags about 50-0, Pacquiao about 8 divisions but look at how much more accomplished Chavez is than both of them combined.
