Oscar was a 2-1 favourite and was supposed to win easily.
The Philippine government tried to ban Pac-Man from fighting him.
This was an incredible win by Manny.
Only Freddie knew manny would win since he coached Oscar and knew he had trouble with south paws.
Pacman was also a last minute replacement. Oscar was supposed to have a rematch against Mayweather but Mayweather like a bitch that he always is, ducked Oscar in the rematch and let the rematch clause expires because Bitchweather retired for 366days. and Oscar was about to fight Hatton since Mayweather ducked him, Hatton has a scheduled fight against Malignaggi at November so there's no time to prepare against Oscar. and Oscar called Manny, then the rest is history.

I remember when this fight happened my buddy who was into boxing with me just couldn't believe it. Oscar had never lost like that before and we'd never seen such fast hands in our lives. Manny was my favourite from that point on.

It's very poetic since. They were the legends of that mountain late 90s and late 21st.... Pacquiao and Mayweather where considered the old breeds from that when Floyd hanged his gloves and does exhibitions. Pac keep that old vets on his back era till the supposed Spence fight(ugas fight before 2 weeks of fight night).... Sad to see him retired but hey at least. He showcased that sensational fights from Ali, to Tyson, to the era of DLH, morales, Barerra and other Mexican legends and cotto. Man what a Career run Manny had. That literally spanned to 4 decades of accolades stack upon his pound for pound famous honorary.

To the casual eyes, yes. But anyone that was following the sport at the time knew DelaHoya was just a shadow of himself. He already gave up before the fight even started, and was hoping Pacquio would knock him out so the fight wouldn't continue.

This victory was key in mannys building of confidence to prove the doubters wrong. The most touching life of any fighter is pacman . poverty to vast wealth and blessings.

2 lineal titles that manny was awarded were vacant. Manny didnt win regular belts at 126 and 140. Pac didnt beat a champ at 154 and the fight was at a catchweight. Pac fought the weakest 135 champ...The glamorous divisions didnt have wbo, wba, ibf, wbc, ibo, wba regular belts, wbc gold, silver, diamond belts...There's just way too many belts today. YOu can add the lineal title and ring belts...That's the big difference so dont compare those glamorous divisions to today's era.

Beautiful and also tragic in a certain sense... I don't think there are many other sports where you get the opportunity to face and dismantle your idol in such a manner, as much as Pacquiao is an incredible champion he's also human and I wonder how this affected him after the fight

I remember this fight. Pacman completely destroyed De La Hoya and there was no denying it. I always felt De La Hoya started too fast, his M.O. was always crescendo to the end of the fight. Not sure what made him come out so aggressively, planned or not, I think he walked right into Pacquiao's kitchen. The pace was pretty quick and De La Hoya just shrunk more each round. I was never a fan of his but my respect for him was definitely earned over time. After the 2nd round I don't remember there being any doubt on who was going to eventually win, although Oscar always had a puncher's chance. It could have been a better fight no doubt, but it was certainly memorable no matter what.
I think maybe he was counting on the size difference to bully his way through. It works a lot of the time against the fast guys because they set down and flurry with weak shots and only then move away. Not only did Pacman move as he punched, he hit way harder than Oscar probably thought he would. So the classic strategy of taking 5 pitter patter shots to land one big one really didn't work. He barely found him with his jab, let alone power shots.

Manny made one of the best boxers of his generation look like an amateur. This was a glorious fight but it made me feel bad for Oscar. Manny just has infinite stamina and endurance. Punches don't seem to bother him and he never gets tired. He's inhuman.

My 2 favorite boxers of all-time. This was a very difficult fight for me to watch because I'm a huge admirer of both greats so I didn't know who to cheer for nor did I want to see either legend lose because these 2 are my favorite boxers ever.

Classy fight, classy exchange after the fight, between two (truly) professional fighters.
The winning streak Pacquiao was on during that time might be the best ever. He beat Barrera, Morales and Marquez before. Afterwards he would beat Hatton, Cotto, Margarito and Mosley. Talk about a murderers row of opponents.
by the time pac fought some of those fighters, they were no longer the same fighters as in their primes. Cotto already got brutally knocked out by margarito. Margarito was already knocked out by Mosley. Mosley was just plain old and beltless. Hatton already lost to floyd. Morales already lost to raheem and already having a hard time getting the 130 pound limit...pac never won decisively against marquez. clottey came from a loss vs cotto

It would be amazing if you could cover some of the greats of the Flyweight and Super Flyweight divisions. Maybe covering the rivalry between Roman Gonzalez, Juan Francisco Estrada, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs Carlos Cuadras would be a great place to start. I was also wondering if you were interested in the coverage of of the great Japanese fighters of this generation. Inoue's fights with Donaire of course but also Kazuto Ioka, Kenshiro Teraji, Kosei Tanaka and Akira Yaegashi are all great fighters.

Freddie Roach figured out oscar's weakness when he watched the fight Dela Hoya vs Whitaker.
Dela Hoya was having a hard time catching the shorter and evasive Whitaker. It was a great strategy that he given to Pacquiao to defeat Dela Hoya.

Masterful performance by manny completely outclassed Oscar
Manny is possibly the greatest fighter of our time, he belongs with the greats, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Haggler, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, unlike Floyd Mayweather Manny is humble, never dodged anyone and was a true gentleman, Mayweather is a legend in his own mind and was only unbeaten because of bad, dodgy, paid off judges.
De la hoya had the WBC title at 154 which is the weight Mayweather fought him and beat him. In de la hoya vs pac, de la hoya had to weigh in at 147, which is a weight he hadn't made in over 7 years. Not to mention de la hoya in an interview recently admitted to drinking the week before the pacquiao fight.

Floyd dodged Manny until he aged and did not have the speed everyone was used to seeing out of him. Floyd even bragged about all the previous failed negotiations of that fight. @jethawk015 all manny had to do was drug test. Obviously that seemed to be the biggest challenge. Floyd was a beast in '09-'10. He would of outboxed him like he did and people would of still been complaining. Made that fight look easy.

Manny was almost flawless that night
I mean, it's a much less dramatic or poignant story to acknowledge that De La Hoya was just severely weight drained here. Manny's coach, Freddie Roach, said he knew they had him beat before the fight when they showed up to the training facility and De La Hoya could barely complete a lap around the track or a half mile or something like that. He was too drained to fight well or take a punch.
That's on De La Hoya. DLH wanted the fight at 147 but was still an alcoholic at the time. Nobody outside the fight camps knew that, so everybody thought Pacquiao was gonna lose.

1) DLH hadn't fought at 147 in SEVEN years.
2) Pacquiao amazingly fought in 3 different weights in 2008. 130 vs Juan Maneul Marquez, 135 vs. David Diaz, and at 147 vs DLH.

Oscar Dela Hoya was completely weight drained and hadn’t made this weight in over 12 years! This was pointed out by Mayweather during a press conference. Oscar fought Pacquiao for a pay day. He never had a chance of winning. Manny Pacquiao’s career was manufactured to make him look better than he actually is. He’s overrated and took steroids most of his career which is absolutely disgraceful and dangerous in combat sports. Boxing is corrupt and they’ll do anything to bring more viewers to make more money.
