This video is the first time we ever hear HOME’s “We’re Finally Landing” in a Summoning Salt video. It’s insane, this iconic track was introduced in SS’s 17th (currently available) WR Progression video out of 36, and yet we can never think about this series of videos without hearing this song.
Honestly, Summoning Salt is one of, if not the best guys for progression videos. He has that 2009 style of youtube videos, and he's just fun. If he kept on trying, I am pretty sure he could get a 3 lap below 10 seconds. The WR for 1 lap is sub 3. So in a perfectly executed performance, hitting maximum backwards speed when rolling down and clearing a lap because of that, you could theoretically get a 9.70 with the shortest lap being 2.50-ish. But that is if you have a perfect angle, perfect speed and a perfect collision. If Abney hasnt stopped practicing, he could pull this off.
Predated O nope. A 2:50 lap is executed by finishing up at the jumping wall side of the finishing line. To execute a weathertenko you have to start up at the other wall. You'd have to add the time of coming back to the other wall between each weathertenko, which I'm makes it more than 10 seconds even for a perfect run.
*You'd have to add the time of coming back to the other wall between each weathertenko* That is theoretically avoidable, and what I meant with "hitting maximum backwards speed when rolling down and clearing a lap because of that". If you hit the corner on the right angle when falling down, you'd get moved back backwards towards the starting point. Making the initial move 4 seconds and the others sub 3, IF executed without any error. A human is theoretically capable of doing so. Not saying a human will be able of doing that soon, but it is possible. If you allow TAS with perfect inputs, you should be able to get sub 10.
Predated O The main problem with that is that to get a lap that fast, you need to basically abandon any setup. If you take the time to grind against the wall you get over 3, if you take more than a quarter second to aim you get over 3, if you don't reverse correctly you get over 3. Then you'd need to do a frame-perfect angle-perfect trick without any setup three times in a row. Theoretically possible? Yes. Humanly possible? Probably not.

I know nearly nothing about speedrun tech, but these videos have such good editing and music that im almost emotional watching them. You make each record and accomplishment feel like a victory for mankind, which, it might as well be. excellent job!
The story telling aspect is so good that makes you feel like actually knowing about this stuff he is talking while being captivated to see what happens next
@@myristicina. toadette is just a toad that happens to have features that humans would consider feminine And I think it's canon that they are genderless or something
dELTA13579111315 but that would go directly against TTYD, which uses feminine and masculine pronouns. I think some instruction booklets that depict Toadette also refer to her as “she/her”
@@Talz622 pronouns are just pronouns man, they're just arbitrary words. pronouns don't make you a gender or a sex, gender or sex just are what a person often uses to decide their pronouns. And I'm also pretty sure about that it's canon from nintendo that they're genderless although i dont remember where i heard that. But point being that being genderless and using typically gendered pronouns aren't mutually exclusive, and even if toad and toadette do identify as a gender, from a fungi point of view and from the video game species point of view, it wouldn't be right or accurate to apply our human concepts of sex and gender to toads as a whole
Imagine someone sets out to beat abney317's record. They try and try again to get 3/3 weathertenkos, and after tens of thousands of attempts, they finally get it, but they are .01 seconds too slow.
After all this time a second person hit 3/3 weathertenkos, I just remember its on twitter but I don't know what his @ is. It was under 500 total tries or something like that
@@garlic.naan2 Right here! twitter.com/summoningsalt/status/1225464919807553536?s=20 Edit: I thought Summoning RT'd from an account, guess I was wrong lmaoo
Is this the first Summoning Salt video to use THE song? It's at least the first to have the iconic opening. Feels like inadvertently stumbling upon history, love it.
Editing was absolutely beautiful man, and the way you walked us through the story of the course was done really well - thanks for making my night, this video was a pleasure to watch :)
I just randomly found this video after watching some AGDQ stuff, and holy shit dude! This channel is amazing! I binged almost all of the world record progression videos, love man!
So I did some probability calculations and the likelyhood of Abney hitting 3 wathertenkos in the same run is 0.00156250 % If I'm calculating this correctly then 26460 attempts is actually way less than he would've likely needed (he got lucky!)
I feel like you should have included like 50 more failed attempts to build hype so we could fully truly understand the oppressing feeling of TWENTY SIX THOUSAND ATTEMPTS.
To this day, Abney has shown the rawest display of pure determination I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Einstein once said that doing the same exact thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity. But I guess that doesn’t matter in the face of Abney’s unyielding determination...
Watch the movie Jin-Roh a 1999 complex secret agent thriller, the ending is the most raw emotional utterances a human could ever make, Japanese original only, they literally butchered it in the recently dubbed English one, no crying or anything, no girl can cry like a Japanese one lol
Francisco Aguayo If you throw a dice the exact same way every time you will get the same result. If abney entered the exact same input every single race then he’d get the same result. You’re all confusing repeating the same tasks and legitimately repeating the exact exact same thing.
Something people arent noticing is that when Abney began his grind for 3/3, his chances of hitting a weathertenko was 1/40, but grinding tens of thousands of attempts got those chances down to better than 1/25
it was probably even better then that; he had so many decimal points there that i think it must have been a cumulative average and not the average from say his last 1k attemps
Abney is amazing. An underdog that never gave up that not only got his 'accidental' spotlight, but defended it as if not only his own life, but his family's life depended on it. Mind boggling determination. I say 'accidental' because it could have happened to anyone who tried the weathertenko, and Abney would have never gone through such extremes to milk the stage for every mililitre if he wasn't the one who made it.
I just got this as a UA-cam suggestion, but this was geniunely really, really good. Very well put together, good pacing, good explanations on everything. Honestly, great job!
Reminder that abney actually beat his record by switching to the Pal version and doing this run all over again. The current record stands at 17:55 PAL or 14:60 NTSC
Dude, total respect for the effort you put into this quality video. The research and explanations, the inclusion of players and posters reactions and dialogue, the story's development and clean narration... it was all well done and kept me captivated till the end.
@@miksuwaaan7527 yup, and Summoning Salt still has yet to make a vid about it. But I'm pretty sure he's waiting for the dust to settle so that he only talks about the facts. Since apparently (last I checked up on it) Dan recorded a huge chunk of those records beforehand, and submitted them all at the same time to throw Matthias completely off guard, and that particular action is what caused the whole controversy.
As @Elizabeth Moore said, it's probably to do with the music. He uses a lot of synthwave, including Resonance, by HOME. Synthwave is excellent for inducing nostalgia. Look at his music file for some great songs, especially by HOME.
Hungrybox Hungrybox! I would have never expected you here! Nice to see you're into cool shit like this too. Btw before this video, I saw your legendary Jenga match with Chillin vs Choko and Tokido. Great job carrying Chillin so hard. I was amazed he did as well as he did.
How do you get someone who hasn't heard of super mario 64 almost at all, to be cheering on someone he'll never meet while that person drives a car into a wall over 26 thousand times?
your use of "we're finally landing" in these docs are just lovely. gives the entire following documentary such a monumental and mysterious atmosphere. it seriously captivates me. incredible song choice and fantastic doc
Imagine the feeling of not having any world records to suddenly holding the record for a single lap by performing an incredibly precise trick only known to be done by TAS, to then one day have the 3 lap record by doing said trick 3 times back to back. Truly incredible
I clicked on this thinking I would get bored and click off after 30 seconds...you kept me locked in and lose track of reality until the video ended. Bravo!
25:11 "Insanity is simply the process of repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result" - Albert Einstein but oh god was it worth it
You just got my fiance to watch a video with me on speed-running while crunching on snacks in suspense the whole time. A testament to the quality content you put out. Keep it up!
Abney truly is a god. I both envy him, and feel sorry for him. Why? Because you know that the Choco Mountain music as well as Toad's "AAAAAAHHHH!!" are both eternally etched into his brain. I would not be at all surprised to hear that he has restless nights where his Weathertenko attempts replay in his head over and over. This isn't a joke, I honestly think that happens to him, what with his attempt count going up by the thousands daily. He's been suffering to make history in Mario Kart 64. Give the man a trophy.
Exactly. But at least with Tetris, the strategy is always changing because you don't get the same order of pieces every time. With this, he's trying to execute the exact same insanely difficult maneuvers in quick succession, and the music constantly restarts...
Robert Anderson if you think Toad's screams are bad in Choco Mountain, you need to check out this clip from abney's stream! clips.twitch.tv/SpookyTemperedBadgerVoteNay
On the one hand I'm disappointed that I didn't discover your channel until a few months ago. On the other hand, I'm happy that there's so many great videos for me to catch up with. This popped up in my recommendations, and I decided to watch it. This was basically like a well-made documentary about a Mario Kart track. Well done, my man! I'll look deeper into your channel. As for my experience with Choco Mountain, I remember it fondly from its inclusion in Mario Kart DS, but I guess none of these crazy moves can be done on that version.

The story telling aspect is so good that makes you feel like actually knowing about this stuff he is talking while being captivated to see what happens next
And our final words of wisdom from that stream?
"toads are fungi, they dont have "female" gender."
-dagroth123, 2017
They do look at toadette
@@myristicina. toadette is just a toad that happens to have features that humans would consider feminine
And I think it's canon that they are genderless or something
dELTA13579111315 but that would go directly against TTYD, which uses feminine and masculine pronouns.

I just love hearing the word "weathertenko" being spoken. This belongs in my lexicon!
So I did some probability calculations and the likelyhood of Abney hitting 3 wathertenkos in the same run is 0.00156250 %
If I'm calculating this correctly then 26460 attempts is actually way less than he would've likely needed (he got lucky!)
Didn't expect to see you on summoning salt
So your saying there’s a chance....
His chance to hit it rose to over 5% later.
No, he got better. The chance that he PB's increases with attempts, it's a curve, not linear.
Summoningsalt mentioned in the video that since he got it 1 in 40 times it's a 1 in 64000 chance, so it is fairly lucky
I feel like you should have included like 50 more failed attempts to build hype so we could fully truly understand the oppressing feeling of TWENTY SIX THOUSAND ATTEMPTS.

YourCrippledSon Thats the Point
No it's not
To this day, Abney has shown the rawest display of pure determination I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Einstein once said that doing the same exact thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity.
But I guess that doesn’t matter in the face of Abney’s unyielding determination...
So that's where the Far Cry quote comes from.
Wait and see arcus determination
Watch the movie Jin-Roh a 1999 complex secret agent thriller, the ending is the most raw emotional utterances a human could ever make, Japanese original only, they literally butchered it in the recently dubbed English one, no crying or anything, no girl can cry like a Japanese one lol
Francisco Aguayo If you throw a dice the exact same way every time you will get the same result. If abney entered the exact same input every single race then he’d get the same result. You’re all confusing repeating the same tasks and legitimately repeating the exact exact same thing.
*Your pursuit of the world record fills you with determination.*

Definitely not
This is like my 4th time watching this video. It never gets old.
Many, many times
Nope
I've watched this video like 7 times since I discovered him.
@@parzingtheasian true
It was total attempts just looking at the figures. Agree he was probably closer to 5 or maybe even 10% over the last several hundred attempts.
Well you can see on his stream overlay he actually got his odds at the end to around 1/15 or so it seems like. His rate the day he hit it said 6%+

In the stream you can see that he's wearing earphones. Was he listening to game audio or was he listening to his own music?
404waffles - I sincerely hope he was listening to something else... something to drown out Toad's yells.
