    Thank you, Antonis, for a fascinating and very beautiful study. I am surprised to see you depart from tradition and use modern acrylic medium in this video, but it seems to translate well to a very lovely outcome.
    How does the acrylic glue compare in terms of drying time and handling to egg tempera? Does the dry pigment mix easily with the glue? Thanks again, generous friend.

      Mark thank you soo much!! I have to say this medium feels very close to egg tempera but it lacks the precision and silkiness of egg tempera...

    Hello Antonis,
    In some (modern) icons I see the double line halo. Does a double line halo have a special meaning?

    • @Vlad-rb5nc
      @Vlad-rb5nc 3 роки тому

      Hi William, I may try to explain to you, I hope you do not mind.
      The white line does not have a special significance. Here is what I think: usually, in iconography, when you have two adjacent darker areas belonging to different object, it is used a very thin line to separate and create the shape. See the fresco of Saint Elijah from the same artist: i.pinimg.com/originals/48/90/f6/4890f6d07020d68f6227e6fd0a2086b7.jpg
      The shadows on cloak interfere with the dark background, so Panselinos used a thin line to define the shape of the figure. Here is the same: red next to black is not so strong. To emphasize the red, a duplicate in white is used to define better the round shape of the halo.
      Double line is for for the esthetic of icon, to have much nicer, cleaner halo, or just for beauty.
      Be aware not to fall in the trap of associating every element in icon to an allegorical meaning is not part of Eastern Church tradition. This 'tradition' came quite late in Orthodoxy (19th-20th century A.D.) and interfere with the liturgical aspect of what an icon is.
      Shortly, icon is a face, of Christ, Mother of God or saints. We kiss and worship the face, so the one represented (a direct contact between the face and the prototype). No hidden meanings.

    • @oOIYvYIOo
      @oOIYvYIOo 3 роки тому

      you have double line right in the first centuries of Orthodoxy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icon_of_Christ_and_Abbot_Mena#/media/File:Kristus_a_svat%C3%BD_Menas.jpg and : commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Peter_Icon_Sinai_7th_century.jpg, you do not find much more, due only after 4th century it was allowed to worship the Triune God and in the 7th and 8th centuries, the Iconoclasts christians and the new heretic muslims destroyed frescoes and icons all over.

    • @Vlad-rb5nc
      @Vlad-rb5nc 3 роки тому +1

      With all respect, you don't know what Holy Fathers teach.
      You started an entire polemic alongside an opinion based on esthetism, not dogma.

    • @Vlad-rb5nc
      @Vlad-rb5nc 3 роки тому +1

      @@oOIYvYIOo my dear, I said the exact same thing. Start and read, then judge. And talking about heresy and absurdities, first how it comes that you have the right to judge me and me not having the right to write something. You speak about Holy Fathers, then start and read them

    • @Vlad-rb5nc
      @Vlad-rb5nc 3 роки тому +1

      @@oOIYvYIOo you started an entire polemic beside a subject that you clearly do not master and I understand you. This that you have is a zeal of a begginer that could not distinguish between what is a dogma and what is a way of pedagogy. Second, only God glorifies, and how He decide to do that and through whom, is not your concern. Third, icon is a symbolon, a part existing in material realm that unites both God's and human's realm. I said exactly the same thing as you but your rage didn't allowed you to read properly. Forth, loosing yourself in a realm of symbolism and mystery in any kind of thing like just a line in an icon is not only absurd, but you start to worship the hat instead of the head. The liturgical experience of Church means union with God. You said about fast and feast, but without Communion, they have no sense. Icon is another way in which Church makes the reality of Church in all times be present in one point, on earth, on our time as living people. Here is where fr. Schmemann said is the mystery of God's presence. Giving strong symbolism just for the sake of justification or to 'feel something' is know as luciferic knowledge, as you want to keep a secret. There is not such a thing in iconography. Icon is not a book, you can't describe a person's essence. It is the most thing for which Saint John Damascene fought against iconoclasts, accusing us that we represent something that is undepictable. Careful with theology, read the treaties of Saint John again and again. Neither the prayer would make us know them. We know them through Holy Spirit. He is the One Who show us everything. So stop thinking that human power can understand the essence of what an hypostasis is. Hypostatsis is what we depict in iconography, nor feelings, beliefs or dogma. The icon itself, after Iconodule Fathers' description, is the crown of all dogma: if Christ, Whose incarnation is base of our salvation, would not be circumscribed because of His love to escape the humanity, we would not have the right to depict Him.
      And one more thing: leave aside your bigotry. Leave monks and nuns to take their blessings according to their rank (from gheronda or gherontissa). Life in Christ is more than blessings, prayers and fast, even more than taking Holy Communion. If you don't trust me, read Saint Nicholas Kabasilsa, About life in Christ. And try to think the informatin you receive, even from monks. Neptic saints would always tell to theur spiritual sons and daughters that is their decision in everything the do and they need to stay by themselves in the spiritual war, not leaning on the stick of an spiritual father, to whom you rather transform into a nanny(and it is a sin after all, you disrespect your spiritual parent).
      Please, next time when you write something, first read, than get a serious bibliographical resource.

    Is not the acrylic emulsion a bit tricky for wall? I have seen a lot of unfortunate cases where the al secco peeled of the wall because of acrylic compound. I heard that, beside lime on dry wall, a good technique is using a wax emulsion, cera colla. Also in Romania, we have murals executed in oil by Nicolae Grigorescu
