In this video I Paint with egg tempera the holy Icon of Saint Dimitrios using the technique of the so called Macedonian Masters. It is also called The Broader Technique as the lights on the faces are broader than those painted in the Cretan tradition. I include snapshots of the palette, explaining the process along with the pigments I mix in each step. If you find this helpful, please consider subscribing as more tutorials like this will follow. Thank you for your wonderful comments, questions and your presence in this channel.

A breathtakingly beautiful icon
😊😊 Thank you Fevronija
Antonio, I am from Australia and belong to a very small group of iconographers. we have very few iconography teachers, so your videos are precious to us. Thank you so so much for giving of your time and talents to help spread the joy of iconography. You are a very talented iconographer and also a very caring and effective, understanding teacher. God bless you and your golden hands. Paraskevi Georgakopoulou.

"Efgaristou" master! Your quality is superb. Comparing the absurdities in art that worth millions today and then we see your works, we can understand how our world works today. Upside down.
Thank you Pedro!!
Wowww! my friend antonis your icon of saint.Demetrius so so beautiful well done bravo thanks for showing us your color palette it’s very helpful thank you once again master!!❤️❤️🙏🏼
Such a hauntingly poignant expression on the face of St Demetrios, and so very powerfully and masterfully captured and illustrated at every step of the process! I am awed and can only thank you again for the abundantly generous sharing of your technique and insights.
Thank you Mark!!!
Very beautiful! Thank you for showing the palette mixing and giving so many very helpful insights.
🔴 Probably the most beautiful icon you painted in this channel! I would love to see a painting process for St. George from the Vatoped Monastery. I understand that the the icon with St. Dimitrios and the one with St. George are from the same period. Thank you and God bless!
Thank you Darkania. Saint George will follow at some point!!

Antonis, I'm one of those who can't at this time get any other instruction in iconography other than UA-cam, and I always look forward to your videos very much and especially appreciate these long-form, mostly real-time instructions. It doesn't just help me understand how to do it, but I find them very encouraging as well. Your commentary always makes me feel less scared to try it; it's very calming. Thanks so much for doing this. I think it's helping me with more than just iconography, but with life in general, especially now since the world seems so strange and frightening.
Hilary... I read your comment very carefully. I need to thank you for sharing this, and know that I am humbled. I really am happy that the videos help you, and if I was your mentor and friend I would tell you to not have any kind of fear, especially any fear concerning the creative process. It is of course natural to sometimes feel overwhelmed by these amazing masters of the past, but if we approach painting in a calm, humble, not very aspiring way, creativity just happens. Know that I too struggle much, I am mourning both my parents and really try to understand these hard times that we live in...If it wasn't for the studio time I'm sure I would be in serious trouble.
Again thank you for your kind and warm comment. Keep Painting and being creative and that's the only thing that matters... Love from Crete.
@@PaintingtheLight I'm very sorry to hear about your mum and dad. It's a strange feeling isn't it? It's not only that you miss them, it's that their passage makes it feel like you're in charge now. When I lost my mum I felt as if I was cut off from my whole past, and was sort of floating in space. I think I started painting in part to try to re-connect with the world and life.
Everything about this video was perfect to me. The technique, the artistry, the respect for the masters, and the vulnerability that you share with your audience. And that accent! Never get rid of it, in fact make it thicker! Thank you for your beautiful work and your refreshing teaching style :)
Absolutely Beautiful !!! You got the grace of God to paint so divinely and thank you so much for sharing your videos. 😘😘😘❤️
"I wasn't there when the iconographer painted, I don't know what red he used" LMAO I felt this. i love this channel thank you so much for doing this!!
Haha.... Thank you soo much for the great commenr
Thanks for making yet another amazing video. Very greatful for you sharing your skills so freely with us 🙏❤️
Thanks so much for showing us your palette 🎨 ! I understand better what you are doing !!
Simply breath taking & full of life.
From Phoenix, Arizona USA - it is wonderful to learn from another iconographer. I have been studying the form for several years now under a local artist but it is so useful to learn new approaches and techniques. I appreciate your painterly approach. My teacher has learned from a Russian school and her style is different. I appreciate learning new things and trying to figure out how to best represent these beautiful windows on heaven.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, I live in Brazil, these videos are pecious for me.

I tried painting a Fayum funeral portrait in encaustic. It looks pretty bad 😂 but I always learn from you how I might try something to improve. You’re an excellent teacher
great respect
I find these studies fascinating and peaceful. Thank you. But I don’t understand why the skin tones are green.
This is one of your best tutorials! Very in depth information. And the painting came out great! Has a little bit of Fayum vibe to it. One question: as we look at the saint, the light seems to come from the left. The nose makes a shadow that goes to the right and right after it the cheek of the saint is the most higher in value, more so than the other cheek that actually receives most of the light. I saw this in other (more realistic) paintings and I guess this will happen with a real model...but I don't understand why. Could you please explain?
Thank you Bodea... I can't really answer that.... 😔😔
Thank you, Antonis. This is beautiful! I am still trying to get used to egg tempera. Does the previous layer need to dry before the next application?
Thanks so much for your teachings, where o what type of dust colors do you use? Best Regards from México.
Your painting is beautiful... I love to watch your videos.. . I learn so much.. By the way.. Do you think you could tell us what color minerals you have in the jars.. I really would appreciate it if you could tell us.
hello, congratulaion for your work, i'd like to ask you if you use a final varnish for your egg tempera paintings or not, thank you!
Yes. I use a varnish in spray. It's an acrylic varnish
@@PaintingtheLight interesting! Do you think that's necessary, or the tempera color can stay also without? Whit the years it's a benefit or a damage the use or not of the varnish?
👍👍👍
May I ask what type of paint you use? Is it just acrylic or is there a special paint used for icons?
Thank you very much for this beautiful video, Antonis! Please, what kind of medium are you using? Thanks.
Thank you so much!!!! I'm using egg tempera!
Μήπως μπορείτε να μας πείτε για τα πινέλα που χρησιμοποιείτε; Τι πάχος έχουν και από τι υλικό είναι;
Excellent!
Just one question: what is "purplasmost"? I've heard this word several times in yout videos, but I couldn't find anything on the internet.
Matheus it is Proplasmos. The base color that accepts shadows and loght
I'm trying to learn iconography. I'll start with unorthodox way, by watercolor pencils. But I'll be glad if you could tell me the oil you use.
What is the paint brush that you use?
I believe that he uses pure Kolinsky sable brushes in most of his icon/egg tempera paintings. He seems to prefer the Da Vinci brand.
When you mix your pigments do you only add eggyolk or some water?
It's egg yolh mixed with water and a little vinegar. Check video!
Which saint is this
Στα βάζα, σκόνες με νερό έχετε αναμίξει ή σκόνες με αυγοτέμπερα;
I think is st demetrius
Is this alla prima
Γιατί δεν μιλάτε ελληνικά;
Mans doesn’t use a pallet knife
👍👍👍
