Thanks for this. As someone who is Catholic, yet has recently discovered the treasures of the Eastern tradition, I do feel that icons are at times expensive, especially coming from mass-produced images and statues in our very Catholic nation. But on the other hand, I get the time, effort, and prayer of the iconographer has to be recognized somehow, and one way of doing that is giving the iconographer what he or she deserves. It's also a way of honoring art.
I am guilty sometimes of looking at icons over at Etsy in terms of price, and basing my options on price, since cheaper things are often more attractive to me! But lately, I've been thinking that perhaps the sacrifice of the iconographer could be matched by my own "sacrifice", so I have to save up for the icon I want to commission, give up another purchase so I can get it, and so on. In that way, both iconographer and myself will be happy and fulfilled. And not to stock up on icons, as is usual with other things in this consumption-driven world, but to take things slow, just as a great icon takes time :)

@@PaintingtheLight Just an update, 4 months on. I have just received my first painted icon, commissioned from a Bulgarian iconographer. It's St. Ignatius of Loyola, since I belong to the Western tradition. I now better understand why icons cost money: the icon is so exquisite and intricate and draws me to prayer. And I really feel St. Ignatius' presence with me. Thanks once more for this video which reminds me that I can help iconographers carry on their mission by patronizing their icons and not lowball them on prices. God bless you!

I agree with all your thoughts on pricing and hope that in future people will understand more about why we have to ask for money to paint :) I think the comments are interesting - I live in the UK so perhaps I am one of those who Pedro says charge too much 😂 I have studied art for 20+ years professionally, iconography for 15 and continue to learn and improve my technique and work. I only use pure gold leaf, real pigment and egg tempera on solid wood. I also live in an expensive country. I try to practice φιλότιμο but also have a child, a home & know one day my hands and eyes may stop my work. I do my best to be modest but also have to live. There is no easy answer :) for artists like you who are using good materials and produce good work, the bible itself says “the labourer is worthy of his pay” (Luke 10:7).

Also what I learned is that it doesn't help you if you charge too low. You might think that by charging lower, you're doing your client a favor, but instead the low price causes your client to doubt the quality of your work. "How can he charge so low? Is he compromising on the materials he's using?" So if you're new to the industry, and you're setting up your rates, the urge to want to lower your prices tends to be a good sign that your prices are just fine. There will always be people who will think your rates are too high. Don't try to please them because you probably won't.

I am an artist illustrator living in Switzerland (expensive country). Many calculate illustration and art price by day of work and 300 Euros for a day of work is the minimum here to reach a low salary, once you have paid charges (as you have to, as self employed worker), supplies and taxes. With a family, if you want to be able to pay the food and bills, you have to charge 300 Euros minimum for a work that took a full day. So, for example, an icon that took 8 to 10 hours your would charge 300 euros, for an icon that took 16/20 hours of work you would charge 600 euros. Working full time, you would end up with approximately 3900 euros net monthly income , which is considered minimum income with 2 child. But of course, if you have another job to make a living, you could sell your work for cheaper. But that would not be fair retribution of work in my opinion.

Hi, I just wanted to offer a suggestion of donating these paintings free of charge! I can guess what you’re thinking. However, (I don’t know laws in other countries) in USA, donating items such as art can be deducted on your taxes. I’m not a tax lawyer but this is the option I’m currently considering - as if it works accordingly, could mean you do generate an income (in a round about way) while still giving these paintings away for free. Something to think about and thought I’d mention. Great work!

I do know iconographers that charge an absurd, specially the ones in UK. I am selling all my 30x22 for 100€. Whether a bust, half a figure or a figure, or with an episode with one or two figures, without gold. I cannot master gold leaf work and I havent all the proper materials for it. For now I wish to practice painting since I dont live of iconography. I have sold around 10 icons all this last months, thanks to my parish hieromonk and by parish brethren. But I wish to paint in bigger board, but I need to save money to invest in proper materials, as pencils. I bougth a very big easel with crank from MABEF. Step by step. I hope you will maintain your online course avaible for sometime as I intend to subscribe in the future.

In our culture unlike in the past, we do not think about embellishing the church to glorify God, by giving Him the best we can give. I have bought the cheaper icons you mention for the simple domestic altar, but I don't confuse them with real handmade icons. I know the one I have bought stands in place of an actual one and serves to help personal devotion. Thank you for addressing this complex issue in a clear and straight forward way. I hope that your videos will help to educate more people about the reality of the icon as a timeless work of art.

There must certainly be a greater density per capita of iconographers in some locales as compared with others. And the same with commissioners. I am imagining that Antonis might encounter more competition, so to speak, in his locale than would an iconographer in a region of the world where the tradition of icon appreciation/veneration is rare. I wonder if supply and demand plays a significant role in compensation for the work of the iconographer?
And what about exposure through the internet? Might that negate to some degree the effects of physical locale?
