My dad took me to my first Tool concert, then on one of my birthdays he surprised me with tickets to A Perfect Circle and I fucking bawled because he tricked me into thinking that we weren't even going. I had the pleasure of meeting him at one of his Puscifer concerts, yes I paid it, and it was worth it. The brilliance behind this man is just understated. He doesnt get the recognition that he should, but even then, i dont think he truly cares. He doesnt pride himself around like some of these other so-called stars. He is nothing like that. I think thats what separates him from others, and that voice. To go from Tool, to A Perfect Circle, and then Puscifer, is just amazing.
There are so many singers "out there" that nobody has even had the chance to hear, that this kind of statement is essentially meaningless. Just say you think he's an amazing singer. No one is taking you seriously when you decide your favourite singer is unequivocally the best out of several fucking billion people. And frankly, if MJK is as good as vocals can possibly be then I'm disappointed in the unlimited potential and variety of human vocal ability. Why not instead of thinking "this is it, this is the best singing ever", think of how many other great singers who will also enrich your life instead of putting all your eggs in one unnecessarily limited basket.
HOW am I just discovering this now?? HOW does this man consistently choose songs that NO ONE has any business attempting to cover, and always manages to make it his own and draw a whole new set of feelings out of the lyrics??? Wow, this blew me away! I've heard many covers of this beautiful song and previous to this I've always said no one could ever compare with Elton's original. This however was truly amazing. Yes, obviously it's a cover but he (Maynard) was able to make this his own to an extent I wouldn't have thought possible. The lyrics have the lonely fishbowl-like sound quality of a spacecraft and the cold echo of that repeating transmit tone between NASA and astronauts was perfect. IMO it's pointless to try and put one version above the other. All art is subjective and beauty therefore will always remain in the eye, or in the case of music, the ear of the beholder/listener.
I remember this was the first 45rpm record I ever bought, released in 1972 and cost $0.25 USD (25 cents); played it till the grooves wore away! Brought back some serious memories...
