  • We know that our diet can have a major impact on mental health. Unfortunately, however, most medical education programs don’t include nutrition, so many psychiatrists and physicians, in general, aren’t as empowered as they should be to prescribe a healthy diet. Moreover, stigma around mental illness is still pervasive in our society and can keep people from feeling empowered that they can change their brain health and get the care they truly need. Dr. Hyman recently explored these topics with psychiatrists Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Drew Ramsey.
Dr. Daniel Amen is the founder of Amen Clinics. Amen Clinics has the world’s largest database of brain scans related to behavior, totaling more than 160,000 SPECT scans on patients from 121 countries. Dr. Amen’s research team has published more than 70 scientific articles. He is the lead researcher on the world’s largest brain imaging and rehabilitation study on professional football players. His research has not only demonstrated high levels of brain damage in players, but also the possibility of significant recovery for many with the principles that underlie his work. His team also published the world’s largest functional brain imaging study on how the brain ages with over 62,000 SPECT scans. He is a double board-certified psychiatrist and ten-time NY Times bestselling author, with such blockbuster books as Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Healing ADD, Memory Rescue, Change Your Brain, Change Your Grades, and The Daniel Plan, co-authored by Pastor Rick Warren and Dr. Mark Hyman. His most recent book is The End of Mental Illness.
Dr. Drew Ramsey is not your average psychiatrist. A writer, farmer, and doctor who focuses on the connection between mental health and food, he is passionate about nutritional interventions and creative media to share a different way of thinking about the brain and mood. He is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and in active clinical practice in New York City. He also spends much of his time with his family, growing their own food, on a 127 acre organic farm.

Took me over 10yrs to figure out MSG was triggering my depression.. And it in all processed food here in this country. They brine foster farms chicken in a solution of MSG before packaging it up for sale at grocery stores. It's even in pop corn we buy at movie theater

Brother, what is MSG? Did you discover anything about gluten or can you tell others factor involve in triggering your depression. I have been going through depression for years yet not cured. It will be helpful if you tell your story about depression.

Mono sodium glutamate, a flavour enhancer in fast and other processed foods.
Read Swallow This by J Blythman
Many people find that eliminating indigestible, industrially processed refined grain, legume and seed oils causes decades of depression to disappear within a week, esp. when contemporaneously eliminating Homogenised milk and Commercial bread. Look for Non homogenised milk. Buy bread from an Artisan baker who Doesn't use Yeast. Cheaper to make it yourself, certainly.

lucabrazi36 ....Thanks for telling us that. I had no idea it was in so many commercially produced foods, thought it was just in Chinese food. Is it even listed in the ingredients on the packaging, don't think I've ever noticed it, and I'm usually very careful about reading the ingredients on most food labels since I have lactose intolerance.

@@rosemaryreid8196 : This is why I recommend people read Swallow This by J Blythman because she states the circumstances under which food manufacturers are exempt from listing certain ingredients significant despite their tiny proportion of the total.

Jessica Li ....Thanks for the recommendation Jessica, I'll have a look for her book, sounds interesting. Does it tell you much about food that is labelled as being organic ?..Bought an organic chicken today thinking it might be a lot more healthy and tasty, was looking forward to cooking it for dinner tomorrow thinking it would be much better, I've been wondering for a while if all the organic food labelling can be trusted. I don't really want to go down the road of taking loads of different vitamins and supplements, I think you should be able to get most of what you need from a healthy balanced diet. I do take vitamin D in the winter, have always done that from childhood because we just don't get enough sun in Scotland in the winter time.

I wish more Drs would think like this , iv never liked going to the Drs because. I don't agree with what they do give a prescription and send you on your way, I suffer with a lot of medical issues since loosing my son 6 yrs ago and was told it was the way I was grieving my body started to shut down, recently I gave up sugar a month ago, and I can't believe the difference in my pain since doing so, bad back knees arthritis, and other issues fibromyalgia , not one Drs said anything about how it effects you ,mind you that was my only vice, don't drink no drugs no smokes, eat mostly organics ,but loved chocolates and lollies. Instead of going to the Drs we should be going to farmers markets.

Destiny Delaney You're right. Our doctors hardy ever mention the connection between our mental health and physical illness. I believe stress from abusive relationships causes a lot of physical illness. That was certainly the case with me, all the doctor ever had to offer was crappy antidepressants like Prozac which didn't agree with me and made me feel even worse. Trying to stay fit and keep eating a healthy diet if you're trapped in an abusive relationship isn't easy, sometimes it's hard to eat anything when you feel so anxious and stressed.

Destiny Delaney ......Thankyou. I have managed to sort a lot of my problems out, and have more time and energy to concentrate on looking after myself. I hope your health improves now that you've changed your diet. I'm trying the Keto diet at the moment, more for health reasons than for losing weight, I'm lactose intolerant and I think the diet is helping my digestive system, been taking the apple cider vinegar and lemon juice mixed with warm water most days as well, so maybe it's that that's improved my digestive problems.

@@rosemaryreid8196 I'm lactose intolerant also, my niece was on keto and lost a lot ,but I'm not a fan of red meat and I think it includes a lot of that ? So I thought it wouldn't suit me, my diet was healthy besides my sweets ,but after a month of being off sugars I don't crave it now, I mean yes I would still like to eat it but I'm over the hump, I think a lot had to do with it being comfort for me after what iv been going threw grieving the loss of my son.

I usually have bad headache, so I always had a medicine with me the moment it strike.I always take medicine before it really get worse and makes me puke.
Fast forward, I started going vegan and eat meat on very rare occasions. Most of the time my diet is plant base. And I notice, I still get headache only sometimes now and it is remarkably very tolerable, I am no longer taking medicine for it anymore. And the headache just fade away on its own.

To boost your mental health, focus on eating plenty of fruits and vegetables along with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon. Dark green leafy vegetables in particular are brain protective. Nuts, seeds and legumes, such as beans and lentils, are also excellent brain foods.👍

Fruits are loaded with fructose, which makes us insulin resistant, and vegetables are loaded with oxalates, anti-nutrients that cause slow damage. What we need is animal fat, but too many livelihoods depend on keeping us fat and sick and even depressed.

@@sourcescience You know that plants do not want to be eaten also...this is why they make toxins to prevent being eaten. Tony Robbins was a hardcore vegan for 25 years and recently started eating animal because he is having health issues because his body is breaking down. This is a man with the ability to get any info on the planet. We must find what works for our body because we are all different. I am sure there are some life long vegan that are doing awesome but that does not mean that it works for everyone. I did the veggie thing for 2 years. I did the carnivore thing for only 1 month because it is too extreme for me. I like variety. NOW cutting out all sugars and carbohydrates has been AMAZING. Fasting also have AMAZING effect on the body. The body has never been better and I am 50 now. I follow Keto and my diet is 70 to 80% veggie and the rest animal.

Think we definitely need some fresh veg to stay healthy. Surely Millions of vegetarians can't be wrong,. I believe a lot depends on the quality of the food we eat and if it's GM or contaminated in any other way. So many people have different food intolerances these days and there must be reasons for the huge increase in that.
