I was diagnosed at 20 as bipolar and put on meds. By 40 I was on disability. then I stopped gluten and dairy and processed foods for my husband who got cancer and in one month I not only got rid of my bipolar symptoms I also cured my autoimmune system. I lost 50 years of health (I am now 70)
yes! Chronic inflammation is known to directly be linked to mental illness symptoms. It agitates the body and brain. As we take care of our bodies and brains, we get well mentally.
Amen 🙏 🙏 🙏 My son is on medication for bipolar disorder and believe me medication is not the solution. I pray to God for my son's deliverance from this disorder of 8 years 😢 He is now 33 years old and still struggling 😢😢😢
Yep! I'm not on any meds am I doing okay? Not really lol but I do all the necessary things that I need to to stay mentally healthy. Progress not perfection though. I also don't eat out at resturants anymore. Trying to give up bread which has been hard. But yes medications aren't for me and sense I am trying to change my behavior my friend has been wanting to change theirs he doesn't want to be on any meds either. Keep us in your thoughts.
Aye, MEDI-tation OVER MEDI-cation. JACKPOT!!!!! Meanwhile: Q - WHO doesn't suffer from some form or degree of mental DIS-order, or DIS-ease? You'd literally need to be a BUDDHA, or other worldly CELESTIAL being. Mental challenges & suffering are central to the human experience.
Psilocybin saved my life. I was addicted to heroin for 15 years and after Psilocybin treatment I will be 3 years clean in September. I have zero cravings. This is something that truly needs to be more broadly used in addiction treatment.
Psychedelics definitely have potential to deal with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, I would like to give them a try but haven't found any legit grower to get it.
The Trips I've been having have really helped me a lot,I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have alot more empathy as well
My dear brother has suffered for years and NOBODY believed it was physical, only mental/emotional despite several concussions since age 2 and many food allergies. He's now 51 and in jail where he has no physical contact, only interactions with other unhealthy people and atrocious food options. We desperately need to address the prison system and overhaul it using these techniques and information.
yes, we should take care of that. but the people in jail and prison are the last ones that anybody wants to help. I don't have any friends or family in jail bit I feel adament about not forgetting them. most of the people there had very abusive childhoods and their hippocampus is small, they run on cortisol. the food they are fed make it worse.
Get him out of prison go to work to help him, a lawyer will not help you go to your functional dr for advise, work with drs in the prison, his warden of the prison and go visit him as much as you can.write Dr Hyman ask for him for help. Have great patience work on getting him out, ask for the prison pastor to go see him. Have him moved to a prison near you which is set up for prisoners with health problems. Work with drs inthe prison send them his records, have him evaluated in the prison.he can ask for this to e done.don’t give up.send him books on eating good food he can cut out the sugar and carbs
I suspect there are many people with mental illness that have trouble being understood who are unable to fit into a "pleasant societal slot." So away we must go. It's really tragic. I'm sorry for what you and your brother are going thru. Addiction, anger, violence are often signs of mood disorders and we need light, calm, good human connections, healthy foods and good sleep to even have a chance at repairing our brains. There but for the grace of God go any of us! It's eeny, meeny, miney, mo! People with mental illness need kindness and holistic help, not incarceration, and not always psychotherapeutic drugs. We need to be understood and loved and a chance to move back into wellness. And it's a long road, but with some understanding and willingness it can be done. It's just most unfortunate that self-discipline is in short supply when one is mentally ill. I think they should check all incoming prisoners' neurotransmitter levels in their brains via their saliva. Without proper levels it's hard to feel healthy motivation, get quality sleep, hold down responsibilities, feel pleasure and love appropriately. And many with PTSD are just in fear a lot, and have many triggers that keep them in survival mode to fight or run. I really wish police got training in handling encounters with suspected PTSD, or simply approach all suspects/criminals as if they have PTSD. Honestly, I heavily suspect many cops have PTSD and are walking around with loaded guns. Maybe we should also test their neurotransmitters after certain traumatic events on the job, even months afterwds, because they have their adrenaline elevated daily and it's got to take a toll on them, too! And maybe then there will be yet more sensitivity around mental illness in this society. May God bless you and all of us.
Thank you so much to both of you for sharing this important information with the world. I am a hospice volunteer mainly for Alzheimer's patients and I get to see the end result, the last 6 months of their life. When I started this work and saw them curled up in their bed in the fetal position I said a prayer to God, asking him what can I do for them and I heard "pray". I verbally say a prayer over each one and I know that at a spiritual level they know that I prayed for them because on rare occasions they have said "thank you" and I have even seen a very slight smile. They do feel the love I have for them. I am so grateful that I am able to do this type of volunteer work, God has truly blessed me. I am grateful. Debbie
My mother had alzheimers and was in a nursing home for 10 years. I did not want volunteers or staff praying over her out loud. I do not have to explain. Keep your religion to yourself. I am serious.
Dementia patients have a brain that is unhealthy. Try to find a way ( by watching also youtube ) to heal the brain, by figuring out how the diet destroyed their health and still destroys their health in the elderly home. Meds also destroy the brain and bodily chemistry. Maybe you can make a difference! Watch>>> or/and read books Dr. Erik Berg Dr. Natasha Campbell Mcbride Dr. Ken Berry Dr. Sten Ekberg Dr. Jason Fung Dr. Peter Osborne Maybe you can also protect your body and brain to deteriorate in this regard and more. Bless you lady.
As a former psychiatric R.N., I always wondered why we never scanned our patients brain. To me it just made common sense. I didn’t think the food we fed them was particularly healthy either. But, insurance companies don’t want to pay for scans. My area of specialty was working with children and adolescents. Gosh, it was both rewarding and heartbreaking. I’m glad we as a society are working towards diminishing the stigma. Fingers crossed.
I was diagnosed with depression about 35 years ago. I talked to my aunt about it. She was completely put off by the fact that they did not do any tests only talked to me to come up with that diagnosis and serve me those pills. This whole thing has been a big pharma sham from the beginning

You can do it! 💫💪🏼💞 I feel so much better when I am less chunky. Since my mom passed last October, I have been eating my feelings.😞 I had just lost over 75lbs when I bounced back from my divorce. I think I'm finally fed up enough to do it again. Let's get healthy and happy! 💞
I have a close friend who was always very overweight like his dad ( mom skinny, he and brother same as kids , normal weight. as adults brother slender like mom,) had hormonal issues not really treatable. He was very bright, artistic, musical wrote music taught school, ran a business, traveled read, traveled the world interested on everything had good friends on th whole a very
On the whole my friend had a good full life despite his weight problems and lived to 79y longer than my skinny active husband. My point live your life don't think badly of yourself enjoy life don't let your weight change your life if you can't lose it. I know people who had weight loss surgery and they died young by 50 from strokes or pancreas problems because of the surgery. And extreme diets also dangerous can ruin your kidneys and liver and end your life young. On of my women friends also very heavy I have known many years she is now in her 80s sharp as a tack and doing well still ( but her skinny husband is gone). The truth is that it's all more than weight that finishes people off.
Things I learned here . 1) don’t consider as mental health. It is brain health. To be honest, ever since I first heard that in one video from him, I felt relieved and confident that I could treat my depression just by caring my brain. 2)You should take care of your brain in advance. And your body as well. 3)Your brain’s inactive or holes are mostly because of alcohol or drugs, your working environment sometimes. 4)Make sure your diet is balanced and take enough sleep. Personally, changing topic MENTAL HEALTH to BRAIN HEALTH gives me hopes to cure or treat this. All I need to do is caring my brain, right.😊 But when I thought as mental health, I was helpless and hopeless to get out of depression.😢
As a grandmother of four adopted grandchildren (none are sivlings), who all went through tremendous childhood traumas; would love to hear more about childhood traumas and getting them healthier, so as not creating future dysfunction. Obviously their home, love, support, therpy, and school life have greatly improved since being in our family; but what else can we do as grandparents to support them?? LOVE being grandparents!
God bless you precious Grandma for not only changing the lives of these sweet babies. But the generations that come after them will be changed bc you CHOSE to love these precious kids well. This is how we change the world. Invest in our kids and all the kids God puts in front of us. What a gift you are to the world.
Teach them meditation. It sounds trivial the way most people think of it, but meditation is actually communion with the source of all that is. For anyone that communion would be the greatest gift, but most especially for anyone who is overwhelmed by any kind of suffering, like trauma, addiction, even addiction to negative thinking. That communion is the same reason that 12 step programs are so effective for any kind of addiction, and the depth of that communion determines the level of success in those programs. I'm mentioning addiction here because that is what often follows childhood traumas.
And I was one of the bigots who turned him off. In my case it was because I didn't realize he was a psychiatrist. I should have known PBS would not waste anyone's time with another unqualified street philosopher. I missed out on a lot from this guy. Hope to find more of him in the future.
@@priusa8113 I've seen it, but, pioneers always draw skeptics. All one has to do is see if what he is saying makes sense. It's groundbreaking. And all the components tie in together very well. Maybe scans will finally convince the average yodel that mental illness is an illness, just like pneumonia or arthritis. Amazing how bigoted people are.

Psychedelic is the answer to most severe anxiety and depression...The use of magic mushrooms completely helps one get over depression and makes you feel like yourself...I used antidepressants for some years but it only made me feel like a zombie but with immediate use of mushroom 🍄 in few months I feel like I'm living a whole new Life.
Psychedelic are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety...it saved my life
Seriously one of the best podcasts on mental health issues I've ever heard! I can relate to so much of it. I downloaded the think dirty app he talked about and it's surprising how toxic all my cosmetics and cleaners are even though they're marketed as healthy!
Super message. Yet let's not forget that there is also a spiritual reality which has a huge influence. Discernment is a crucial, needed tool as well. God bless you!
This is an excellent podcast. I agree with the vitamin deficiencies point mentioned here. Most doctors don't check for vitamin deficiencies, which is sad because your brain and body needs sufficient vitamins and minerals to function properly.
Most traditional doctors hardly check for anything. They have tunnel vision and don't care about people only $$$. That's why I love Dr. Hyman and his guests they really care about helping people. The information they share transforms lives.
They’re no taught about nutrition! Only Functional & Integrative practitioners are & the DC’s who take extra classes. Allopathy doesn’t have anything to do with wellness, and everything to do with pumping people full of meds that will, in time, destroy them. They universities that teach these medical students just teach them what they want, to get them to, basically, push pills legally! This whole system is out of whack & anti-nature! Peter Gøtzsche has it right, I believe. And so does Dr. James Davies of the UK about how the DSM is totally unscientific & he’s got the proof!
I live in Alaska where it is cold and dark 9 months out of the year. Few doctors order vitamin D levels on patients. Vitamin D deficieny can exacerbate asthma & precipiate osteopenia & osteoporosis and many other physical problems.
100% Agree he should get a noble peace prize, from my own experience I know that any new break through knowledge gained are Blessings from GOD specific to individual or individuals .Dr .Amen brings the healing mind and peace of mind for everyone inorder to realize true peace, it's starts with each and every one in their personal life .! He is the answered to the world cries and prayers for mental health🙏 AMEN .
Thank you thank you……. After watching a mum with dementia suffer to the attitude / behaviour of nurses family , etc I steered her to a good peaceful life despite the suffer. For 15 yrs I have wanted society to drop ……the word Mental ……it’s a negative additive ….and diverts away from the Brain issues that are affecting people ……. ❤ God Bless You Both , your enthusiasm to support society deserves a Medical Oscar !!
I have multiple health issues that have a big affect on my brain, from type 1 diabetes, hyper and hypo thyroid, a stroke and past trauma. I’m hoping to gain 100% brain health and mental health again ! Recently lost my mom which put me in anxiety/depression/ OCD mode. I need to get my life back!
When I taught elementary school, l always provided frequent up on feet breaks whether it was drama, music movement, group learning on feet and static body building exercises.. Each child had a water bottle on desk, and a healthy recess snack could be eaten before recess if the children agreed to be active at recess. Kids were taught games and activities for outdoors. Movement, water and fundamental building blocks for reading math, and fine arts sets up an environment where the joy and excitement of learning thrives.
I just wanted to say how beautiful it was to see a doctor of psychiatry talking about real life scenarios. Actually giving his own family as an example. Being able to relate to a person one-on-one is the most genuine connection that two human beings can share. It brings hope in a world of chaos. I myself am a 46 year-old woman who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder when I was 28. I have had a lot of therapy since then. I have spent years doing any sort of research I can. I've always been open to anything that will help. I figured the only way I would be able to do that is by educating myself. I have just started to get into the physical health of the body and nutrition. I know everything that I need to be doing but it is difficult to follow through with my disorder. I recently moved a year ago and have had difficulty finding someone who can treat me physically and emotionally. The basics are just not enough. I'm basically trying to take care of myself by using self-help. I know that I need to fix my body and I just want a chance to do it. I just want to have a chance to get my life back before I get any older. There is a big part of me that feels empathic and extremely intuitive. Almost to the point of feeling psychic at times. This is something that I would be interested in exploring as far as the brain is concerned. Once again thank you so much for being so down to earth. ♥️
Faith Walker Have you ever been evaluated for Asperger's? Many people who have Asperger's get diagnosed with borderline and/or Bipolar and it could be a misdiagnosis. Or you could have both. Here is the link for the test if you would like to take it www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php. Also I would like to share another UA-cam channel with you called Mindful Divergence. She was diagnosed with Asperger's as well but did not know it her whole life. I didn't either and thought that there was no way! lol. It was not until I watched a few of her videos and took the Asperger's test that I realized OMG! Scored extremely high! As for diet The keto diet works very well for borderline and Bipolar Type symptoms in my opinion. Just stay away from too many high histamine foods should you try it. I really hope you will look into these things for yourself. I am a 47 almost 48 year old female and I love to try to help people. I am like you and have Psychic gifts and intuition. I don't know if you have taken the Meyers / Briggs Personality assessment before either. A lot of People take that and end up an INFJ or INFP have the empathic features and are Intuitives. Look into this. You will feel better about yourself. Don't Let a Borderline diagnosis define you. Bless your heart. If you need somebody to talk to I would be so happy to talk to you. Just let me know.
Touching comment 💟 I urge you to take a deep dive into Dr. Joe Dispenza’s work. There are tons of UA-cam videos and he has multiple excellent books. Seriously, I can’t recommend it enough. Best to you dear 💫
My best friend from high school is a borderline and I know what a challenge it is. I’ve been back in her life a couple times but it just doesn’t work. I pray 🙏🏻 for healing and that you have support and love.
Republicans make mental illness much worse by their destruction of social programs that would make a huge difference, aka Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Donald T......see the pattern?
@@ecr-9341 Tell that to a schizophrenic living on the street, Mr. Shallow Person. Have you no feelings? I remember when there were no homeless. Then, Ronald Reagan was elected.
@@ecr-9341 Of course you've never had an intellectual, political or any conversation with a schizophrenic You run for the hills when a homeless person is near. If you had "intellect" you would know and should know, there weren't enough homeless in the US, as late as 1980 to even survey. That was the year Darth Vader took over and shamelessly began cutting Federal Housing supports by a tragically astounding 80 percent. And, at the same time that mental hospitals were closing down across the country to "help" them integrate. Those poor people were thrown out onto the street with less support every year Reagan was in office. Do some research before you try to play in the big league.
Hi Dr. Hyman! I am a Cleveland Clinic employee in the Nuclear Medicine Department. I would love to do more brain SPECT scans on patients. It's one of our more interesting studies. Although, insurance doesn't cover it for the conditions Dr. Amen says that it is useful for in diagnosing. Maybe you could push for it to be covered by our insurance and maybe other insurance companies would follow suit.
Laury Hammer....I just watched 60 minutes last night and they had a segment on MRI head scans for autism and depression. I would love to be a candidate for that study, since I already have a baseline MRI brain scan.
Thank you, this helped me understand my old dad a bit better. On the first day of WWII he stayed too long to hear the news and rushed on his Motor Bike to get to work. He had a bad crash with broken bones and concussion. His personality changed , his marriage broke up, and left with him, I spent my childhood in constant fear of his temper. He would have been 117 this year.
Julie Gale LCHF81 hi Julie, my son was in a motorcycle accident and i feel like i’ve lost him but this gives me hope now i just need help reaching him to understand to get help🙏🏼
I was a bit irritated from the title alone (bc I felt like it was gonna be a "just think yourself healthy" sort of thing) and the the first thing th guy said was "It's a brain disorder" and I'm like YAAAAS. So many people don't seem to understand that "mental illness" is just as valid a medical condition as a bad heart or pancreas! Looking forward to listening to the rest now.
I totally agree. 👍🏼 For years I've been calling my "mental" illness = a Brain illness. This makes a difference, not only to my brain health, but to others in my life. Very powerful shift! Let's call it what it is. Ty. 🙏🏼
My brain and my earth suit say thanks. This is good stuff. We need to pamper our top knot. We're all borderline. We're all nuts. Stay safe and be well. ♥
I remember being at the psychiatrists office and telling him that i wish he could look at a brain scan of mine so he could understand what I was going through. He told me, I don't need to, I listen to what you say and I know enough, basically, is what he said. I was iust like....idk...i think that could help...😂. So glad someone is doing it! Seems like common sense, but Lord knows we are in a great depression of common sense these days.
I love you guys i love the fact that you are not the kind of doctor who are zombies applying zombie medicine toxicity to be well said! God bless you for staying true to the no harmful practice
My daughter is going through legal issues yet again she is bipolar. people keep saying lock her up punish her! But no one listens to the fact she keeps telling them she is chronically lonely, chronically depressed and that the meds don’t work!!!! I love her and will never give up on helping her!! She got drunk and committed a crime and everyone know hates her and wants to throw the book at her!!
A mother's love never let's go of her child no matter what. Keep holding on to your daughter. I feel for you. May God give you strength and courage as you seek the right help for her.
I find you do not get a lot externally, if you lead a life on your own. Feed the mind, feed the self, feed positivity,if have the money, go to a holiday place, even see that there are those whom aemre so much worse off. I am in Asia at present. Many people have so little. The community is there for them, friendliness, have good jobs many because good support. Other people I find tend to often try and feed off you . Deplete people, instead of add the self acceptance. That you are Ok. Eat well. Fish food seems good too. Good diet. I eat less carbohydrates.
Iam 71 years now. I have been a caregiver to my parents and husband. My mother had depression since for ever. I keep revisiting her life to See where the disease could have come from and thanks to the internet and drs like urself, there is so much info on all kinds of issues. She suffered from IBS which was because she was given pills to treat the diarrhoea/ constipation roller coaster. No one looked at her brain. Her gut had no flora left, so she was skinny and Ill all her life . 7 years before her death, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Worst suffering ever. So I keep looking for answers and thanku dragon showing me the right path. May God bless you with more knowledge and compassion. I will follow your advice and beat this disease.
@@marianhunt8899 👍a very good point, exactly what happened to my darling partner, he suffered his whole life from many illnesses, in the end he was finally diagnosed with celiac illness, about five years before he passed away, but they still did a bypass surgery on him , he died last year from medical neglect as far as I am concerned, he suffered greatly and ended up getting diabetes from this underlying illness. My daughter has also now been diagnosed but she is younger and is making some recovery, she was also misdiagnosed for ten years as having Lupus, then she was told she had fibromyalgia and finally after her Dads diagnosis they checked her and found she also had the illness. I personally believe it is a lot more common than people realise, there would be a lot less suffering if babies were checked for this very insidious and dangerous illness.
@@mariangrimsdell1112 yes, Celiac disease is a silent slow killer and not many Dr's are truly knowledgeable about. Many nurses sadly, also have little appreciation of the slow, chronic and unrelenting damage this disease does when mismanaged. Sorry to hear how much your beloved partner suffered with it.
I keep wondering when the profession of mental health would get out of the rut. Been on 50 yrs of meds. want to stop. Yes massive failure. I lost much money for psyco theraphy. It is great to hear a positive way to create joy. Thanks is it possible to be in touch with you. Must of being hit in the head once or twice. I have been trying to get healthy in my body. Always get stuck at 160#. I don't like being demoralized either. Thank you for being a real Dr. of the brain. Thank you again and again. I'm on it just need the right guidance.
Some of we therapists absolutely tend to brain health and environmental factors . Having discovered Dr. Amens work 20 years ago. Grateful for both of your wisdom everyday 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Psychiatric drugs like seroquel, Effexor, and all the benzodiazepines also cause severe brain damage if taken for a long period of time. I found that most GP Doctors have no idea how toxic they are for the brain long term. They have had no training at all in medical school about how to help patients withdrawal from these very dangerous brain disabling medications. Could you please tell me why there is no medical training for this. Considering these drugs can cause seizures and other horrific side effects that make you want to commit suicide due to the horrendous side effects. All these shocking side effects are listed way at bottom of the pamphlet??? And the minor side effects at the top 🤔why is that ??? This Psychiatrist is fantastic. The only other psychiatrist who I listen to is Dr Peter Breggin. This has been so refreshing . Fantastic 👏👏👍👍👍
Always go to psychiatrist for mental health , never a GP they are not specialist in this area. GPs must not prescribe these drugs only Psychiatrist as they study pharmacology of it and sometimes neurologist can but not all neurologist some very specialist one. All side effects are dose dependent and GPs dont know this plus they have not been trained in this like Psychiatrist have been they study brain behaviour for 6 years and practice it for 10 years. So its their specialisation, not GPs. GP are jack of all trade master of none. Dont expect much. Go to a specialist
Learned so much from your insightful conversation. I intuitively believe so much of what you are discussing. The one thing that I see, though, is the cost involved to have your brain 'fixed'...so many people who have mental illness and are unable to function, work, etc., do not have the resources to improve their situation. Until insurance companies can see that your approach is the one to better productivity, health, and happiness (yes, a very important part of life), to have people heal on a mass scale is a long way away. Thank you for all of the amazing work you are both doing in the world.
The cost of eating healthy and exercise is minimal in comparison to the benefits Both doctors here have books that give more detail. Subscribing to their UA-cam channels and Podcasts is free the history of what they published is priceless. The issue is people not wanting to take responsibility for their health
So much of public health involves factors and conditions that an individual, especially a poor and mentally ill individual, cannot control: lead toxicity, air pollution, mirocplastics, etc; chemicals in food supply, hormones and hormone-mimics, nutrient-depleted soil; social stress, inequality of wealth/power/resources, lack of green spaces, etc; school-to-prison pipeline, militarization and brutality of police, mass incarceration, etc. Our entire society, from insurance companies to governments, need to get serious about public health. It isn't only the individual victim who suffers for all of society experiences the costs and consequences.
Totally agree with you. Many doctors are now just treating 'the worried well' who have money while much of very real needs are left untreated due to financial constraints. Sad situation.
I love Dr. Hyman and all of his guests. He is from my home stomping ground, Berkshire Hills, and am I proud his clinic is there! Only one caveat to mental disease being physical only and that is the pandemic of narcissism plaguing societies. There is no cure for narcissism. It's a person choice.
Thank you for saying term brain health is a better description. Can't afford a scan so I put several of Dr. Amen's on hold at library. May I keep my focus & follow through. Would like to be fully alive at some point before I pass on. Great information.
Love this conversation!! Thank you! I’ve had a major problem with the word “illness” for years. Generally speaking, if we as humans all experience similar symptoms, how can it be an ‘illness’ rather than a symptom to our environment or experience? The DSM was created to identify which medication to prescribe, and pharma did an amazing job marketing the idea we need those medications. I was told multiple times I would probably need to be on an antidepressant for life for generalized anxiety but I’ve been off for 2.5 years now only to realize I have C-PTSD. Such important conversations!!
Dis-ease Our bodies can function with so much more "ease" when we cut out the S.A.D. ~ Standard American Diet I am 5 yrs cancer free from Stage IV Grade 3 cancer; AND, I mitigate my cPTSD symptoms & triggers well. I no longer lose days, when I experience big triggers. It's more like moments or hours. I was extremely grateful to find better mental health as a "side effect" of getting physically healthier! 🌞
Praying to one day be able to afford brain health care for my daughter who has been suffering with a brain infection and psychosis for 2 years. It has devastated our family in a way I can’t describe. “Health Insurance” doesn’t cover what’s really needed to heal.
Had a motorcycle accident with head trama and they treated me for bipolar not looking at the dozen concussions, I have had in my lifetime. Now I’m looking for a place to get this scan done
This is so powerful with healing information! So glad it popped up on my you tube feed! I will be adding it to “healing” information that I do with healing of memories/traumas. Praise God!
Cherish the knowledge & perception of both these fine doctors . We must pay close attention to their knowledge & potential solutions. I will try harder to take more care with my brain..body. ..and spiritual health in order to be healthier..happier and a better equipped and loving human being for my lifetime... Thankful and grateful...Sandy G.. So. Cal.

One of our most favorite podcasts of all time. As someone who took antidepressants for almost 10 years I love Dr. Amen’s new approach. We need a restructuring in the psychiatric field.
How about stating that , "you Know", that diet is one of the biggest issues. Instead of saying you " think". Advocacy for our government to stop allowing neurotoxins in our food supply and education in our schools about sugar being a neurotoxin, not just a weight issue.
🤗 So nice to see Dr. Amen. He used to live in my California town. I even was able to bring my seven year old daughter to him. She is now 47 years old. 😊
Thanks so much Dr. Hyman for yet another great program. Just when one seems like the best one, the other out does the previous. Dr. Amen is phenomenal! I will certainly follow him and keep up on his methods. This podcast was incredibly timely. Thank you again.
Thank you both for discussing this topic! This gives me hope and inspiration as a vegan with high triglycerides. I'm on a journey to cleaning up my blood and improving my brain health. I appreciate this information and think it's so interesting and would make such a difference if how the brain works and brain health was taught in health class for general studies. I'm hoping that getting oil out, fasting and eating plant based will lower triglycerides.
This BLOWS MY MIND ....how we've for the last 35 or so years...been so focussed on material things as the main commodity driven consumer need....but when it has to do with mental health....it's OH SO VERY ESOTERIC...and extremely complex! I feel this is about the hardware...to get to THE ACTUAL PROBLEM. The cart before the horse really seems to be WHAT'S BEEN advocated until this discussion HERE!!
Dr's i ve been on treatment for depression close to 30 yrs and up to today can't really say one type meds helped and Dr's made me took from one type meds to another, think I've taken all meds on the market, are a Christian but still struggled, and was no where close to good funtional life for most part of my life, I decided 3 months ago to stop all meds at once, which was a dangerous step, but my faith helped me through this and the fact that I wanted a meaningful life from now onward, I was in my own self-made jail for 30 years, despite for brain fog symptoms are going strong and better day by day, thx Lord for helping me with this decision
Thank you so very much, doctors! I have been suffering from OCD for 20 odd years, diagnosed in 1997. But I remember that as a child, I would wash hands after touching certain things and would always be arranging things. My maternal grandmother had chronic depression and was suicidal. So it is hereditary? I never liked medication, never trusted them. I once asked the doctor if my brain has too much or too litlle serotonin. She said I had too little, without a single brain scan. So I have always been on my own OCD wise. Now I remember about a car accident that we had. It probably jolted my brain? When I was a little girl, somebody on a swing literally hit me on the front part of of head as the metal swing came swinging at me. Maybe, just maybe, that explains my condition? To me, every single Brain Health Issue has its own unique root causes and story. You cannot simply put somebody in a category and start treating them the same way as everybody else. It's going to be a major disaster! The worst thing is to ha ve people constantly telling me to " get over it, control your mind, don't let it control you, it's mind over matter, etc" . I would just roll my eyes in my mind while giving them a straight face. Have been beating myself up for making my parents suffer so much because of my tyrannical OCD behaviour. Now I realise it just probably wasn't my fault at all for being this way. Probably that's why God pointed out this video to me to watch. God bless you and your loved ones abundantly! Love from Malaysia 🇲🇾 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@AnnetteMurphyger well I was, and they told me it was incurable. She has become one of my best friends and I contend that she has nothing that love, acceptance, and the touch of the Master won’t cure. I am so glad I stumbled across this video! I always wondered why my psychiatrists never did a brain scan. I’ve been in psychiatric treatment since I was 11. Went on disability in my early 20s. I’m 30 now and tried everything. I pay close attention to my vitamin and food intake, exercise daily, don’t drink, don’t do drugs. I’ve spent multiple years of my life in therapy and psychiatric hospitals. Tried over 15 medications. Nothing worked. I still have to find a way to get better and do research online because I refuse to give up on my life! I am aware western medicine and current mental health treatments aren’t holistic/integral enough to help people like me, so I am pretty much on my own trying to find treatments and methods that help me. My dream is to help homeless people and do charity work when I’m healthy enough to do so. Or maybe start a family. I luckily live in a county that provides me with an apartment and basic income to cover expenses for food, which I’m very thankful for. I don’t have a support system due to my social anxiety and barely leave my home, so having modern resources like online therapy or discussion forums help me immensely. Thanks for sharing this video and your knowledge. 💕 This doctor‘s positivity is contagious.
I want to go back to school for Neurology and psychology but I don’t want the student loan debt 😩 This, however, is my education! Thank you for sharing all this insight and resources 🙏🏾
I live alone and am healthier when I have most of my time focusing on my needs, my live for my health and satisfaction. One scripture I use when a xious" I want to draw close to you God. Help me and draw near to me. I need you. Please convince me again I am loved and safe."
That's always been the rub with psychiatry. You can't see it so it doesn't happen. Plus this innate belief that we all have "free will". It's amazing that the vast majority of Americans are so ignorant. If brain scans can be used on a large scale to just help verify a diagnosis or prove it incorrect, what a breakthrough that would be for the profession but more so, for public acceptance. But there is already a mountain of statistical evidence in the field of psychiatry without using brain scans. Scans are not needed in the field of psychiatry. But, would be nice to have them, especially for ignorant people.
Dr Hyman is a rare and Godly doctor. He has integrity and truly don’t advocate for medications and I have heard some of his videos on autism.I never heard a doctor speak like that on autism.
Yes and the first thing that helps brain disorders is omega 3 , why, because it is an adaptogen meaning anything that is nutritionally deficient the Omega 3 can adapt itself to balance that deficiency, plus you need B group vitamins
What an episode! I feel better already. Now I am working on understanding how to create a healthy life style ie “know myself” first. Ask and you shall receive=functional medicine. Thank you Dr. Hyman for sharing. Happy holidays to you.
I absolutely love these doctors helping with brain wellness. I absolutely agree that we have to look at this as brain wellness treatment. I think more people would feel positive about going for mental health treatment if we could encourage framing it around brain wellness treatment . Wow, who wouldn't then want to treat their brain with brain wellness treatments.
That story sounds like my first husband we called it quits because it was really toxic being around him issues got bigger, it all makes sense he doesn’t do drugs or drink but he does work in a painting company
I have schizoaffective disorder or that’s what I was diagnosed with as well as I’m on disability for it. This doctor sounds amazing. He sounds like the answers I’ve been looking for. I called his office in Atlanta Georgia but they don’t except insurance and the brain scans are $3000. How does one afford that on disability?
Start by going grain free? Eat organic. Grass fed beef. Avoid foods you react to (which in my case is a lot of foods). Avoid toxins. Plastic. Air freshener. Many common everyday things have toxins in them. Avoid people who make you upset. Because there is no way you can get a brain scan on disability.
My son has this and the meds don't work how can I help him ??? What do you do to keep yourself ok ? I'm interested I know it's just a unhealthy brain but I have no idea how to help him. 3 yrs sick
They accept Care Credit which is a credit card for healthcare - so you could apply for that credit card and that should be able to cover the price of the assessment and scans
Do the changes they mention and see if it helps you. Start by cutting down sugars and processed foods. Eat whole foods n exercise. Every 120 days, our cells changes so replace them with better new cells. Good luck
I have been diagnozed with depression/generalized anxiety disorder and bipolar. I have been on Lexapro for so many years. I have always said I wanted to get off my meds. I absolutely love this podcast because everything the drs are saying is exactly how I feel. A dr should get to the ROOT cause of the issue instead of just throwing someone on meds. There has to be a reason why we have these issues. Drs need to look at the person as a whole instead of just the diagnozist. But insurance does not cover all the scans. I have even considered going to an all natural dr just so I can get off my meds.
I got two opinions and was diagnosed with bipolar 2. I never felt comfortable with the diagnosis because I feel what I go through is due to CPTSD but they ask about 5 questions and boom! You're bipolar. Doctor put me on an antidepressant that made my knees hurt so bad I wanted to cry. I felt numb and lethargic. I got curious and Googled the ingredients and was coloring, clear coat and propylene glycol! That's the base in engine coolant or whatever...can't think of the name right. I quit taking them and felt better. I get depressed because of isolation, things of this world but I'm made to be believe something is wrong with me.
WE as a whole need to address the stigma too. I feel so judged by Doctors and staff, even dismissed! At times I feel humiliated even. Rejected for having an ailment. 😮😢
That is so true about psychiatrists not looking at the brain or nutrition etc. I can’t wait to read your book about adhd. My daughter was just diagnosed and I’m about to.
All of this makes perfect sense. Also the fact that in the US we don’t know how to eat. Properly anyways. It just stands to reason that what you put in your body affects what you get out of it.
This is what QUALITY doctor advice should sound like. Very happy to come across this vid, it really matches the best info I’ve been coming across. I pick up bodies for a funeral service. I can tell you now Doctors Are Killing people. People are dying too young for no good reason. No good nutrition and a RIDICULOUS amount of pills. (I’ve been in hundreds of nursing homes/ private homes to see the conditions and evidence for myself) Thanks for mentioning the genes. If I didn’t intervene with my moms health. She most likely would be dead today. I remember the cancer doc asking her if cancer ran in her family. This has to be one of the biggest scam questions. When someone answers yes, they then make the false assumption “well, I guess it’s in my cards” then throw their hands in the air and continue to listen to the doctor. Such an evil scam. Which many have no idea about. Thanks for speaking truth.
How refreshing! Free will - definitely effected by our physiology... thank you Dr. Amen for giving legitimacy to what I’ve believed for a long time! Wonderful interview. Love to listen to you both! Thank you!
I’m too lazy to see video but from the comments it sounds like it’s very interesting and so I have decided that as of tomorrow I will eat healthy. Thanks
Eesh, I have listened to many of your videos. All I hear is egomania. I have gone to several 'functional medicine' MDs. They to me are just candy coated white coats still. I finally went to a licensed ND. Holy heck! A world of difference. Naturopathic doctors ARE the Premier functional medicine doctors and are trained for over 4yrs in treating the whole person, not the disease. I was blown away what I have learned and am still learning. MDs didn't want to go back to school to learn the paradigm of naturopathic medicine. Jeffery Bland was their professor, and he started the IFM certification for MDs. Save yourself lots of time and money, and go to an ND. I have unlimited energy now, no pain, sleep like a baby, my ideal weight>>> and a great libido! :))
I love your podcasts! I’m a psychiatric nurse practitioner and I’m floored! I was never taught any of this! My question is, I’m wondering how to help patients who have Medicaid, and whose insurance covers none of these treatments. Many of my patients don’t even have extra money to pay for supplements. How do I help my indigent patient population?
I have been thinking about mental illnesses, and what they might be. I think there are different phases of stress, 1. stress, 2. PTSD, 3. depression (untreated stress), 4. manic depressive disorder, 5. schizophrenia, 6. borderline, ( I don't know what I think about the narcissistic disorders). If stress is left untreated it can develop into depression, we all know that. when people with psychosis hear voices or see things things that are not there, then it might be because the stress has become so bad, that sleep is not enough to process impressions during the day, so the dream state of mind becomes a part of the everyday life, what has not been processed. Being overstimulated with impressions, because a lot of stress maybe caused by trauma has build up inside a persons mind. Could that be a possible explanation.

Shrooms was the best trip I had. It was an amazing experience.
That's in it self is criminal. I am so sorry. Don't ever give up. People with chronic illness are treated like lepers.

Debbie

I agree! This doctor should have the Nobel Peace Prize! I can see this readily after watching only one of his videos! It all makes sense!
Yes, healing the body is important yet you still have the " soul " to deal with since we are Spiritual beings first n foremost.
Pharmaceutical industry says no!
Yes!!! And also find grants to pay for these brain scans or put it into a standard in all psychiatry practices- better healthy society
All I need to do is caring my brain, right.😊
But when I thought as mental health, I was helpless and hopeless to get out of depression.😢

Children like toys and pets. Rabbit, bird, small dog.

Brilliant advice for special educators and school psychologists too.
Many people
who have Asperger's get diagnosed with borderline and/or Bipolar and it could be a misdiagnosis.
Can I contact you Mac?
Thank you for sharing your story. You've been through so much. I pray that you will find a way through .🙏🏼
Touching comment 💟 I urge you to take a deep dive into Dr.
Poverty makes mental illness worse.

Laury Hammer yes. PLEASE!!! Start with Medicare
Laury Hammer Pharma gets endless dividends for scripts that don’t heal.
one problem with the testing is that it puts alot of radiation in your body.....wish there were safer tests
Laury Hammer....I just watched 60 minutes last night and they had a segment on MRI head scans for autism and depression. I would love to be a candidate for that study, since I already have a baseline MRI brain scan.
They don't do that, I've been diagnosed since early on in age I'm now 46 yrs old and still suffer greatly from wrong meds and it sucks
Yet another casualty of the war, albeit indirectly. War's tentacles reach far not only in space but in time, spanning generations.
Yes, we need more people that understand this pushing for better medical care
Ya, i hate that "positive thinking " too
That's a buddhist religion, not science.
Just like yoga,it's a freaking religion
That's what I first thought too!!
Paradigm Shifting! Kudos! Bravo! Hats off!
I love listening to the doctor he is one of my favorite counselors
2 years later I’m here. Dr. Amen and Dr. Hyman together.. yes!!
Thank you Dr. for helping ppl with mental issues.

Could your mother have had Celiac disease?
@@marianhunt8899 agree, probably because it is not a common illness, it does not get much $$$ in research or developing pharmaceutical products.
Great to have such enlightened doctors! God bless you both
I keep wondering when the profession of mental health would get out of the rut.
Sooooooo true lonely, no friends hardly any family only the dog pfffft what a society everybody to busy to care for each other
Always go to psychiatrist for mental health , never a GP they are not specialist in this area.
So much of public health involves factors and conditions that an individual, especially a poor and mentally ill individual, cannot control:
lead toxicity, air pollution, mirocplastics, etc; chemicals in food supply, hormones and hormone-mimics, nutrient-depleted soil; social stress, inequality of wealth/power/resources, lack of green spaces, etc; school-to-prison pipeline, militarization and brutality of police, mass incarceration, etc.
Our entire society, from insurance companies to governments, need to get serious about public health. It isn't only the individual victim who suffers for all of society experiences the costs and consequences.
Beth Kelly Brogan MD , Psychiatrist, has a wonderful book that could add another support tool - and she has some online programs.
Totally agree with you. Many doctors are now just treating 'the worried well' who have money while much of very real needs are left untreated due to financial constraints. Sad situation.
The purpose of insurance companies is to make money ...
I can't afford a scan either. Buying quality food is also a challenge on a low income.
We need more doctors like you. I wish I was able to have this done to get some real answers about my own health situation going on the last few years.

Dr. Amen has Clinics in the U.S where he does these scans.
This is so powerful with healing information! So glad it popped up on my you tube feed! I will be adding it to “healing” information that I do with healing of memories/traumas. Praise God!

Love from Malaysia 🇲🇾

One scripture I use when a xious" I want to draw close to you God. Help me and draw near to me. I need you. Please convince me again I am loved and safe."
When will this line of thinking become mainstream for our medical establishment? Until then not much is changing on the ground in a big way.
You need statistical evidence in science. That's how science works.
Thank you for sharing this. We appreciate doctors like you sharing truth.
Dr Hyman is a rare and Godly doctor. He has integrity and truly don’t advocate for medications and I have heard some of his videos on autism.I never heard a doctor speak like that on autism.

3 yrs sick
Exactly,thank you
They accept Care Credit which is a credit card for healthcare - so you could apply for that credit card and that should be able to cover the price of the assessment and scans
They should get to the root cause. You’re right.
WE as a whole need to address the stigma too. I feel so judged by Doctors and staff, even dismissed! At times I feel humiliated even. Rejected for having an ailment. 😮😢
Going to naturopath doctors can really help you if you can afford it or if you can find one that is able to take insurance.

Thanks for mentioning the genes.

It's far more expensive to go to an ND...
@@nonyabidness5708 wow that hasn’t been my experience... money well spent treating the cause for me!
@@keilana6 Same... but once I get some issues under control I hope to try one.
I stop midway reading your message. Scared me. Am on this same path😂
This has been my exact theory as well!
Great video!!! So true! Well done on the interview and books. I put my carb coma unhappy apathetic 16 year old on keto and intermittent fasting and WOW the difference is unreal!!! (I started keto first because of my own carb and sugar coma.!) gut is everything. Hippocrates was right 2,500 years ago…. 🎉❤
Wow! I'm so happy to see these two guys working together. Two great brains here - pun intended! PS: I was finally treated with TMS for cPTSD when in my early 70's. Helpful!
I learned of and have been following Medical Medium for 5 years after decades of mental illness and many other debilitating health conditions🙏
