This is my homie from High School, actually just got home from having a drink with him when he told me about this video. Let me tell you, Ivan is anything BUT cocky, he is a very down-to-earth, laid back, great guy. He did everything he could to down-play this performance, but it is way better than he described. Ivan is the man, a great drummer, and an even better person. Good work, buddy!
All the "cocky" comments are making me laugh. I know Ivan personally and had the privilege of working with him as a performer and I took lessons with him. He is the complete opposite of cocky. He's one of the most down to earth people I've ever met and very approachable. His style is just different. He has lots of fun when he plays and has lots of confidence. I can see why some people would confuse that for being cocky, but he's not.
There is NOTHING cocky about this. Obviously you people are wayyy jealous of his skill level and wish to do the same shit. He just happen to MASTER the snare. Its practice, dedication, and ALOT of discipline to MASTER anything in life. This is what this guy does every single day of his life. Its his job. People just don't know how to think and don't know how to feel anything now a days.
I think what people like @RCRhythm are forgetting is that if you just LISTEN, it's enjoyable. The guy takes just a snare drum and gets your heading bobbing. All that matters in the end is, does it feel good? Does it groove? Hell yes, and the techniques are just the cherry on top. I've been watching this video for years because it's what a drum solo should be about: technique and FUN.
Amazing! What I love is that he is having fun, while personifying exactly what his drum corps reputation is, being cocky as hell, unconventional at times, but being damn good! From a Cavalier, I salute you good sir.
ivan was the drumline instructor at my school during my freshman and sophomore year of high school. he made our line sound AMAZING! i kinda wish he still worked with us. but at least we still have his brother art as our pit instructor! :D
I saw this for the first time damn near 20 years ago and still til this day will say "same lick with the elbow" randomly even though no one has ever gotten the reference.
That is awesome. I've been teaching drumline now for about 5 years, and I wish I could have students who played that well.... But yes, I agree with the people who have posted on here. Don't say he is cocky after just watching the video. It's called showmanship, and drumline is all about attitude. I know he is cocky in real life, but in this video, it serves him well. He plays great, and I'm totally going to steal the groove at 1:37 for my line next year. Well done.
My goodness can you imagine this at actual full speed. You can tell it's slowed down because of how fast he can play none of us would actually be able to see it. Thank God for modern day technology.
Ppl he's is not cocky. He very confident in his playing and he's was at the point where he could play his solo comfortably. Not cocky. One of my fav solo's hands down.
That guys got amazing control with his left hand for playing traditional grip. Even when I was drum captain in marching band, I just couldn't get as good with traditional grip as I was with match grip, because I had been playing match for 10 years. Wish I had that much control with the left.
Okay...I know the video said he plays part of it with his elbow, but...HOLY *EXPLITIVE*, that's PLAYYYING with his elbow! No shock that he won. Solid playing!
this dude is awesome and hilarious. i love at 2:33 when hes playing with his elbow and the crowd is getting all riled up how he yells "WOOOOOO". that had me laughing.
no matter how many other dudes are hatin, I am still lovin this and I think that this is great. and guys, he won. he was the snare champion 2004. so y r u sayin'that he sucks? get it, he was the champion. so what's your problem???????????

YO 18 years later and I still remember this man's name to look up this epic snare solo . I used to practice this as a kid! You're the man Ivan!

Calm down. Lol
I would imagine all those replies aren't from drum corps folks.

I swear i saw this guy, in the disneyland parade. He was one of about 6 drummers. Very talented. Nice job
You more then likely did. He's is one of the drummers at Disney.

The is one of the best snare solos. That personality is the performance.
Not to mention elbow as well. That shit was crazy
i love the guy in the audience who goes "uh oh!" when he does the elbow thing
I don't think he's arrogant, he's just giving people a show. And even if he is just being cocky, he deserves it, this is a really cool solo.
i love how the part he plays with the elbows is a sped up version of their 2003 snare break
i bet he gets that "omg my sticks are made of lightning" feeling all the time

2:18 Fist pumpin', heh. Yet to see any snare work like that yet, pretty inventive.
This deserves every single view. Such a boss solo
dude. he's not cocky. its a freakin show. he's entertaining the crowd. thats what you do when u perform something. he's having a good time
Very impressive...I loved the elbow part and then at the end when he throws the sticks. Great performance!!!
Amazing! What I love is that he is having fun, while personifying exactly what his drum corps reputation is, being cocky as hell, unconventional at times, but being damn good! From a Cavalier, I salute you good sir.

I saw this for the first time damn near 20 years ago and still til this day will say "same lick with the elbow" randomly even though no one has ever gotten the reference.
Wow! I'm an old school drummer from back in the 60s. I wish all this stuff had been "invented" back then. Amazing! Great job!
this video made me smile.
He still performs to this day at the Disneyland Park in Anaheim! He is one of the drummers in the Disneyland Band!
That is awesome. I've been teaching drumline now for about 5 years, and I wish I could have students who played that well....

There are people on You Tube who rave about Travis Barker drum solos. This blows Travis out of the water without a doubt.
there's different types of musical skills and this guy definitely has it.
Amazing no doubt about it!!!
