    Can't believe people are hating on this solo. I feel like there's a lot of people here who don't understand the technicality of this piece. But then again, I'm a damn 17 year old with only marching band/indoor percussion experience and even I can see the skill in this. Come on y'all.

      YES. It's that simple: drummers, when soloing, love it to just be a set of EXERCISES... without any groove or beat, which is a huge mistake. Do a great BEAT... and throw in sick chops around the beat!

    This guy is just absolutely phenomenal. The only reason why Keith Moon and Neil Peart got top ratings is because they managed to put it into music that people absolutely loved. I'm not saying he can't do that, I'm sure he could do that... with one hand. But that is just how it is. Who knows, he might just love drumming and may not want all the major attention. Popular music needs some simplicity. He is just way too over peoples heads.

  • @cmoore185

    Anybody that makes a list of the 5 best drummers in the world or makes a list of the 10 best drummers ever and doesn't have him in both is bogus and shouldn't even be judging. It started 100 years ago in New Orleans. That was the first drum kit. There have been great ones but like everything, as time goes on, the bar gets raised higher. We don't know how good Buddy Rich could've been today because in his day, he just did what he had to to be the best. Today, I think when you are talking about a complete drummer, it should be someone that isn't stuck in one genre of music. My opinion and all I am is someone who has played a long time on several instruments and wasn't special on any of them. I haven't ever heard anyone I think is better technically and he can do the show, too. JoJo Mayer and Vinnie and close, but they definitely aren't better. Just because a drummer plays fast doesn't make him great. not every song is a drum solo. I see this one woman posting videos of the best female drummer. Why does there need to be a special list for women. Some guys always pick the hottest chick. There are really good women drummers, Sheila E and Hannah Ford for instance. If you listen to them, their drumming stands on its own. They don't need their own list. Back to Thomas. Nobody better.

    • @thomasbenoit5826
      @thomasbenoit5826 6 років тому

      You just said the TRUTH man. Exactly what I think too. Sad to see that so few people recognize it and consider bad criteria to elect the best drummer. I think there are a lot of jealous guys too.. It's unfair but it's life .. But if we talk about drums and nothing else, I think Thomas Lang is the BEST (or at least one of the very very best). There are a lot of other impressive drummers, but for the moment I have not seen anyone surpassing his technique. For example, I have never seen anyone being capable of such independence by playing complex rythms with 4 (!) pedals, while playing crazy stuff with drumsticks. I have also never seen anyone else that can reverse tempo between hands and feet.. Until now, he is the BEST I've ever seen.

    Super chops. But where is the musicality? With no space between 128th notes, it's mainly stringing together a bunch of licks. Very well done licks, but one bar from Dave Garibaldi, Vinnie, or Bill Stewart speaks more than this 'solo', great as it is technically.

    • @elbettto

    • @lukegowest
      @lukegowest 9 років тому

      +Isaac Dunning I didn't say that this guy sucks or anything like that. I was just making a statement. Mostly to whoever said or named this video best drum solo in the world. But since you brought it up or posted a reply to my comment, Just look at all of the comments that say no soul, or where is the drumming, all I hear is can bashing. Buddy invented drum patterns, and putting them together to make solos. he also led a 20 to 35 piece band. He could play more with just his left hand than most drummers can with both hands. Lang is not up there with Buddy Rich. Neil Peart etc. yes. In other words, there is Buddy Rich, and then there is Neil Peart etc.And by the way Buddy Rich invented that stick trick and was doing it way before this Lang dude was born.

    • @GuiltyHAL343
      @GuiltyHAL343 9 років тому +1

      +Luke West Neil Peart is great but over rated. More people that don't play drums thinks he's the best, if you're an actual drummer that's been drumming you're whole life you've seen better. Buddy rich is a legend, but for his time he could only learn so much. Thomas Lang is in a different era where he knows so much more because of the time. His knowledge with rudiments and how he applies them with feet and hands, right to left, then left to right is just on a whole different level.

    • @every3rd
      @every3rd 9 років тому

      There is no theme here.....A drum solo should take you through a story...He was all over but not structured well!

      Trevor Rising, display of chops here. That's what he's there to do. That's what they want him to do. That's what I bet they're paying him to do.

      Not all drums solos have to "take you through a story" you can have tons of flashy drum solos that the main purpose is to hype up the audience. Thomas lang plays alot of these types of flashy chops, fast double bass and stick tricks because thats what the audience wants to see. Their are alot of successful drummers that play crazy chops all over solos, guys like Thomas pridgen and Tony royster, Aric Improta and many other drummers. Or their are drummers that can play solos that are verry musical and stick to a nice groove like Gavin harrison. I see alot of guys that can really play alot of both in a solo guys like Matt Garstka and JP Bouvet. I dont think their is a right or a wrong way to play a drum solo. All just personal preference and context.

    Do serious drummers twirl their sticks so much? Don't think I've seen Peart or Bonzo or Palmer---or, for that matter, Rich---EVER twirl his sticks.

    • @drumrit
      @drumrit 10 років тому +12

      Dude it's a choice. That's like asking why do some drummers not wear shirts. Serious drummers do whatever they want because they deserve being called a drummer. Peace!

    • @SAHogan-bw4wg
      @SAHogan-bw4wg 10 років тому +1

      Amrit Mehta Dude, it's a choice... called HOT DOGGING IT in my book. The last I checked one's ability to twirl sticks added NOTHING to their sound. If someone can tell me a PHYSIOLOGICAL edge this practice gives "serious drummers" maybe I can buy it. Peace to you as well!

    • @drumrit
      @drumrit 10 років тому +1

      S.A. Hogan Yeah I know that. Who said it adds to the sound or proves their ability on the batter head? But it's one more thing they're doing while they're playing. And playing is friggin' hard man. So it's pretty impressive when people do that. Not that people who don't stick trick aren't equally good. It's just an added accessory.

    • @SAHogan-bw4wg
      @SAHogan-bw4wg 10 років тому +1

      Amrit Mehta So, it's got a name: "stick trick," eh? Interesting. NO ONE said it adds anything to the sound (I was trying to figure out if it actually did)---that was my point. I'll always be more impressed by good PLAYING---don't think I've ever seen Peart "stick trick," and don't feel like I've missed anything---than a drummer's ability to twirl his sticks (a distraction, really; I'm always afraid he'll drop one of them). Please, tell me YOU don't stick trick! "He was so young, so talented---and then he got into stick tricking! Before you knew it he was tricking > drumming; that was when we knew we'd lost him!" JUST SAY NO to stick tricking!

    How anyone can criticise Thomas Lang is beyond me. He is the equal of the best drummers. IMO drumming affords the musician more freedom of expression than any other instrument - that is the beauty of drumming... and Thomas expresses himself more freely than most. And I haven't even touched on his mindblowing technical virtuosity - that is a given. If Thomas isn't phenomenal then I clearly have misunderstood the very meaning of the word all these years.

    All the libraries of techniques are condensed here. Everything is here. This is an official study video. A normal human would spend 30 years only focusing on the strategies that were pulled off on these almost three minutes.

    I learned the beat at 40,I recorded 40-50 slowed it right down & pitch shifted it so it ended up being about a minute long, let me just say,what he did in that 10sec period without a second thought was INSANELY difficult,the hardest part was not so much learning it but trying to get the speed back up,it was definitely in the too hard basket,but I was determined to nail it!I'd say it took a good 2weeks,felt like 2 yrs though!
