A doctor's opinion on AG1 greens powder

  • Greens powders are all over social media these days, and Ive gotten dozens of DM's asking my thoughts on a particular greens powder. While a greens powder could potentially fill in gaps in various vitamins/minerals that you could be low in if you dont eat many fruits and vegetables, there are cons and risks to consider. There are two problems that I see the most in medical practice that are the most problematic. First, supplements are not regulated in the US and many companies do not submit their products to undergo rigorous third party testing. This, in combination with the combo of ingredients that they put in their powders, can cause liver damage. This issue is not uncommon (PMID: 27677775) and I have had patient's labs come back with sky high liver enzymes, only to find out they are on a greens powder or a supplement (weight loss and "testosterone boosting" supplements are big offenders). We stop the supplement and frequently the liver enzymes normalize after! The 2nd issue is that greens powders can contain various herbs, vitamins, and other ingredients that significant interact with important prescription medications. This can be downright dangerous depending on the medication. So, this isnt to say that no one should use a greens powder, but it is a good idea to talk to your physician before starting a greens powder (or any supplement really)! You should also thoroughly read the ingredients list to see if you actually want and need those ingredients, and check to see if the company has third party testing of their products. Questions, comments, concerns???
This is NOT medical advice. ALWAYS ask your doctor before starting or changing a supplement, medication, or diet.

People would rather drink freaky lead powder than to just eat your vegetables.

    Thanks for your professional
perspective. Your point about lead, and other potentially harmful additives, makes me hesitant to buy unregulated supplements. I think I’ll stick to getting my greens from salads. Or by throwing a bunch of greens into a blender and drinking them, as I occasionally do. Wait… you can’t OD on power greens from Trader Joe’s, can you? Oh man, one more thing to worry about.

Crazy bc my doctor actually recommends this to basically every patient who walks through the door, but she also seems to push a ton of expensive and questionable supplements....think I will stop using this, wasn't getting anything out of it anyway.

Well grass fed grass finished meat, and organic vegetables and healthy oils like olive oil can get pretty expensive. Especially when you know what you’re buying, nothing is safe in these streets anymore
