Not being paid to review a product doesn't mean you're unbiased. Sinking your own money into a product causes its own kind of bias, it's why you get so called "fan boys" for products. Humans want to justify and defend the things they've put their money into.
The benefits he mentions of increased energy and motivation are also easily explained by the placebo effect. It's why we need double blind randomized controlled trials to be able to measure the effects of supplements or medication.
An older video on UA-cam by a sports nutritionist came to the conclusion that you could save a hell of a lot of money by just taking a multivitamin. But of course by spending much more money you'll definitely get a strong placebo effect.

I agree 100%. I tried this for 4 months. Don’t know how much it helped me - certainly no adverse effects but costs a fortune. Then I read that tests had shown that taking supplements inhibits you getting 100% of the nutrients in normal food so I stopped taking it. Not sure how true that is. Anyway I didn’t notice any negatives after I stopped. My conclusion is that it’s crazy expensive for no obvious benefit.

Have heard AG1 advertised by joe rogan and a lot of places, so interested to see the review . I think the high price is the main issue. Looking at the ingredients it seems it would be a lot cheaper and as effective just to take a multivitamin/multimineral tablet and throw in a probiotic drink separately. Thanks for the review !

Multivitamins are not all made equal. Magnesium oxide is not the same as magnesium stearate, for example. Beta-carotene is listed as vitamin A at a 12:1 ratio (12mg of beta-carotene is treated equivalent to 1mg of vitamin A), but your body (likely, as each person has different capabilities) absorbs and converts so little of that (even from dietary sources like carrots and bell peppers) that you _really_ need to get pre-formed vitamin A, which is _never_ found in multivitamins (including AG1).
And how you get your vitamins and minerals are also important. Your body is likely to be able to make much better use of the vitamins and minerals in any of the "green powders" than it will from a tablet, even one taken with food.

  • @oliveuk

You are the only "fitness influencer" I follow so I had never heard about AG1 until today ;-) Yeah you changed too many parameters in your life at the same time so it would be very difficult to attribute your improvements to this one product especially since you explained that you started cooking again + seeing a therapist. Thanks for this balanced review and also bringing up competing products.

This was really interesting, Ben, so thank you for doing it. I’m glad to hear that you have been feeling so much better mentally and physically. The fact that you were making so many positive changes all at once does make it that much harder to say what role AG1 played in your performance, if any. I’ve always read that multivitamins are completely unnecessary for people that have a relatively well balanced diet, which it certainly appears you do. I think I’ll pass on spending the money to try this experiment. I’d be interested to know where you are finding the recipes you’re trying, or to see you make a few of your favorites (looked tasty!). Cheers to you from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ben, thank you for the video. Glad you have come to conclusion that making changes in your lifestyle are the best thing to do. Having a medical condition for life I am being constantly reminded by the medical professionals that unless something has been prescribed due to deficiency there is no need to take it. Surprisingly even with my guts not working properly my regular blood test never show me being deficient in any of the vitamins. I honestly think it's a waste of money. Specially at such a hefty price tag. Get yourself tested for levels of vitamins, iron etc. And then if low take what you actually need.

I am glad you mentioned on thing that most don't - AG1 might have been part of a catalyst to the other improvments in your life. This happens a lot when people change diets, or start running/gym work. I have many conversations with friends along the lines of "I cut out XYZ and now I feel great", but they are also running 2 times a week now, and eating more veg etc.
It's not the silver bullet, but if you have the money and it keeps you motivated (or motivates you to change), then I think it's worth the investment - at least until a habit has been built.

I've stopped taking supplements(part form vit D) and my running has improved a great deal in that time, it could be that I was getting better anyway in the same way you were getting back on top anyway regardless or inspite of the snake oil. Something I have been having more of and as a vegan you won't eat is live yogurt(Yeo valley) and it's supposed to be a powerful anti inflammatory along with any fermented product, even beer. Something I noticed in your cooking is that you use a lot of onions, for me onions are a massive no no, they are such a powerful gut irritant along with garlic and other foods.

Hi Ben, great video as always. You mentioned trying AG1 to improve your gut health, but then showed lots of great, healthy WFPB meals. The key to a healthy gut is lots of fiber, which you are getting from those healthy meals you are cooking. Fruit and veg are full of fiber (prebiotics) Add in some fermented foods like kimchi/tempeh for some probiotics and you will be getting everything you need. Save yourself £80 a month and keep on cooking WFPB meals, and I'm sure you'll continue to stay plantstrong.

Yes, it is ridiculously expensive. BUT, having the convenience of pausing the subscription or cancelling at any time, and with the excellent customer service, it makes it almost worth it.
PLUS, most people spend £2.63 on a take away coffee every day anyway, some even twice a day. So, why not skip one coffee and take a green supplement instead?

Thank you for this honest review, greatly appreciated. I have been using Garden of Life Perfect Food ( Greens) for over 15 years and it’s a high quality and 3rd party tested without all the marketing price, it’s 1/3 the price of AG1. I simply can not take a product that is listed as not safe for pregnant women or infants such as AG1. Garden of Life is safe for all. The proprietary blend allows company’s to hide information and there to be differences in amounts batch vs batch. Some of the ingredients lists are so minuscule that the therapeutic effect of for eg Spirilina would not be present. Microdosing is possible but the vitamin and mineral levels would be very minascule. You can get more micronutrients from actual food. The gut pre and probiotics are also found in many other green products at less cost. I’m hesitant to get on board with hype around greens powders at that cost, concentrated greens are not new, they have been around for 25 plus years, what is new is the switch in athletics from sponsors like Bud Light and Chocolate Milk to healthy buzz words like probiotics, gut health, mental stamina, lower inflammation. Finding a way to market these words for excessive cost is what AG1 has successfully done. Every dollar that is spent on this product votes it further up the market. Do not buy this

I live in Japan and drink "aojiru" which is a green veggie supplement drink that's been around for a long time. Seems to do the trick and it only costs about $.30 a sachet. Think I'll stick with that after you mentioned the cost. 😮

Thanks for taking the financial hit for us Ben 😂 I've found just having a super greens powder from protein works on hand for when I want or need it was sufficient. As you said, good diet and taking care of the mental health are most likely the driving forces behind the resurgence in your running form.

Hi Ben, I'm currently training for the London marathon and I'm using your plan, Level 3 Intermediate. I did a run on the weekend, I ran 19km in total (8km easy, 6:13 then 6km MP at 5:15 and then 6km easy) but I found hitting my marathon pace really hard and then going back to easy pace hard. I had 2 gels and and a protein bar on route. Was I running my easy pace too fast, which is why the MP was hard for me? I am aiming for a 3 hr 30 marathon though. I was ill last week and had to take a week off running. Do I need to do more tempo / interval runs to get myself feeling comfortable running at 5:15 pace? Cheers, Keith.

Nice to see an unbiased review on this! The cost is an interesting one. It’s reasonable to say it’s a massive expense. Equally how many have a beer or glass of wine in the evening or a big brand coffee in a morning? Exchange either and the cost nets out or both and you’re saving! All a case of priorities and how committed you are to your health.

I’d like your next video to be the results of stopping the use of ag1 on a regular basis. Were there any changes you experienced with gut health, energy, etc after you stopped drinking it? Thanks

    Hi Ben, (and Sarah)
ag1 is too expensive for me to just test it. I think you're better off with good nutrition. Have you had any experience with stryd and the next gen? I would like to see a test on this. thanks.

Ben do you take creatine? Not sure if many runners do. But coming from a gym background, it's almost 'wasted gains', if you're not taking it. Maybe something to try if you haven't already

Jo Ben 🙌 I‘ve noticed it as well that the brand AG1 is very much often promoted in various podcast from different well known persons on the internet.
At the moment I will not test it period because I have my own products that I‘m trusting for almost like 9 years and have very big results with it as well 🙏🙇‍♂️ They are the Fitline products. They‘re products from a German company 👍 And I love it 🫶🏻
I‘ve the same basic opinion about overall health and performance as you mate because I think the gut is playing a big big role in our overall health.
Their is a saying here in Germany that the gut is the second brain of our body 🫶🏻 And it effects the psyche as well very much 👌

I definitely have a gut issues, I’m 74 and I have Parkinson’s and Cushing’s. I just ordered some AG one, and you’re right OMG it’s expensive. If in one month I can tell any difference I’ll order another one if not… Bye-bye AG one I enjoyed your podcast, thank you for being real and thank you for being honest. Terrie😊

I am using it and I believe that it has made me feel better. However I agree it is super expensive and will stop once I use up what I have left. I will have used it for about six months like you. I actually had considered it for a while before signing up, an interview on a podcast with the CEO, convinced me to give it a go.

I think just getting fresh veggies and fruit each day - adding yoghurt or other fermented products to your daily diet, will give you much more benefits at a much lower price. For me the major problem with these type of products, besides the massively high cost - is the overconsumption of vitamins, who needs 880% B12? or 525% C? Most of these vitamins (unless you have an illness) will be peed out (and thus become very expensive urine 🙂). Some vitamins (e.g. A) accumulates in your fat tissue and if you start adding this to a diet which already contains enough vitamin A (liver is an example) it can even be harmful to overdose.

Here in New Zealand there is another product call Clean Green Vitality, which as I understand it was developed by the same food science team that worked on AG1 and basically very very similar products, but it's MUCH cheaper, and it's stocked in various shops. I was taking that last year, and then also started going to a sport nutrionist who told me because I already had a decent diet (good mix of fruit, veggies, proteins etc) that I was really just wasting my money on it. His thought was that it's potentially useful for people who struggle to eat fresh high quality foods.
