6:26 Religions in asoiaf are interesting because of the way various beliefs created by George RR Martin reflect real world beliefs throughout our history. Valerian Steel and the Red Keep are probably examples of highly advanced Alchemy as there's little difference other then the process of a liquid made with magical properties and a metal with magical properties. Also maybe there's a tie between Valerian Steel and fire magic tied to Old Valyria and all the volcanos. What I'm saying is maybe the magic and all the volcanos made valerian steel naturally appear in the Earth rather then something that's made by humans
I've always assumed Valyrian steel was made using dragon fire or dragon blood. That's why it can't be recreated after the Doom of Valyria as most of the dragons died; as well as the Valyrian smiths, mages, and alchemists that knew the secrets of its making.
The children of the forest also used wind magic its implied the greenmen of the isle of faces do too as well as moqorro wen he sacrifices for favorable winds but i guess that would be blood magic
Not gonna lie, I've found it odd that none of the Targaryens we know of, even the ones pre-conquest, were ever Fire Mages, or Fire Priests. Like, none of them took interest in these fire powers, despite the fact that having the Blood of the Dragon would, logically, be a big aid in channeling flames. And the fact that Targaryens (Valyrians in general) can handle higher temperatures than the other races like the First Men or Andals would also be a decent crutch to stand on. If Dany's 3 young Dragons helped boost magic into the world again, imagine if the likes of Aemond and Daemon ever took interest in worshipping (or at least studying) the ways of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. Or just studying with Pyromancers or Fire Mages in Essos or something.
i dont think targaryens were ever really experts of any magic during the age of valeryia, thats why the were refered to as a lesser houe on the outskirts of the freehold. they just seem liked they should know cause most westeroses didnt have any other velryian to compare them too
GRRM on a behind the scenes video for hotd explained that the valyrian found it wasn't a+b+c type of way. It was who you are, what you want and etc. Less of a recipe more of a drive
It's because magic caused the downfall of Old Valkyria and I mean why would you need to throw fire balls when you have a dragon who can breathe fire hot enough to melt anything. It was just dangerous
@@jeambeam3173 They don't know what caused the Doom, and if it was Magic, it wasn't DUE to magic being the issuI, rather lacktherof If the Fire Mages weren't killed off by the Faceless Men, Valyria would still be around in full. This makes me wonder if John Snow, assuming he is still a Stark & a Targaryen, could worg with a dragon. I thought for sure that's where it was going when he and Daeneyrs hooked up, and they would go into the final battle together.
I personally believe he is not a Targ, the trueborn son of Ned and Ashara. I saw too many parallels between Jon and Ned, or heck even Robb and Ned, not saying I found these by myself, nice theorists did, but they are convincing. IMO. Plus Jon has no dragon dreams, Jon would be more cooler being worthy of the legendary sword Dawn, for the battle of the Dawn.. fittin' isn't it?
@@karinelemaire6402 except we know he's not Ned's son. That was confirmed in the books...I thought. I know Sam has the book of genealogy, I think the same one Ned used to figure out Joffery wasn't Robert's son. I could be conflating the show and book.
@@karinelemaire6402 Trueborn son of Ned and Ashara? Does that mean Robb and all the others are illegitimate? Also you don't need dragon dreams to be a Targaryen. I really love the use of magic in this universe of George R.R Martin, it's not tiresome and so present that becomes normal. It keeps it's mystery, it's scary, complicated to understand, dangerous to do it wrong and you never totally have control over it. I don't even think that the sorcerers understand it completely, they just do it while being terrified themselves and hope for the best
It think it might have something to do with all the subsequent members of house Targaryan being decended from Deanys the Dreamer. Also, dragon dreams seem to get more prolific the closer to the coming of The Others and the Long Night, as well as after the dragons died out. My theory is that without dragons to bond to the inate magic in the Targaryan blood line began to express itself in other ways: both in prophetic dreams and in madness.
Only a few confirmed dreamers though and most of them from the Blackfyre Rebellions era. - Daenys - Daeron (son of Maekar) - Aemon (son of Maekar) - Daemon II Blackfyre - Daenerys Stormborn
The biggest glamor is unfortunately the mystical book the winds of winter and how far it truly is in its completion. If he had a problem with wanting to scrap and start again maybe entrust it to secret editors that would edit and secure its existence. Once he had enough he could release them as parts of the same mythical yarn, ensuring it's readers and yet nearing a sense of accomplishment versus what we truly have years upon years of empty promises.
White bark, red leaves; red sap, Weirwood. Black bark, blue leaves, blue sap, Evening Trees. Both greatly enhances the mind allowing one to see events past, present, and future. When Bran tastes the Weirwood sap, and when Daenerys drinks Shade of the Evening, they both say it first tastes and smells horrible, then sweet, then the sweetest thing they've ever tasted, followed by a taste of something that isn't even food; the kiss of a loved one. They are obviously connected deeply, with almost verbatim the same reaction to drinking them.
They way you explained Mel’s vision makes sense I always sided with “Davos”-“if your god commands you to k*ll children, your god is evil” it makes more sense that it would be a more warning as something that has to happen
what about the warlocks magic? it seems very different in the show at least (not a bookreader), like they can multiply, teleport(dani inside the house of the undying, and they can zoom around aswell), animate shackles and such.
I think this video is assessing based on the wider book lore. In the books Pyat Pree is much more explicitly a conman and it seems like its The House Of The Undying that has some sort of magic placed over it, as opposed to Pyat Pree being magical. In the book I don't think Pyat Pree actually commits any magical feats, however the House of the Undying is unlike anything we've seen elsewhere in the world, using illusion magic to conjure up various visions, as well as disguising the fact that the 'Undying' are in fact a bunch of mangled corpses
what you see in the show is just an illusion, so glamor? but in the books their unnaturally long lives are the result of blood magic at the very least. they have this blue beating heart that floats in-between all of their mostly lifeless bodies and they try to steal her life force.
@@GrandMoffOfMars it must have been blood magic in the show too otherwise if it's just illusion magic why would Millasandre die after taking her necklace off
@Jeam Beam the show is lazy and dumb and probably writes it off as her just losing the will to live and her purpose. there's never a constant stream of blood sacrifices to fuel it, those are all done under different pretense, and since they mostly work there's no reason to doubt that. and in the books she gives mance a similar bracelet, which is how she gives him a disguise.
Great Video(s)! Thanks for Your Hard Work and Dedication!! At 20 minutes in you mention the First Long Night at 8000 years ago, just for perspective, this September will be 5997 years of the 8000 years between Genesis 3 to Revelation 22. That's 200x 40-year Generations. 1988-2028 is the 150th. All of US History is only 6 Generations. Gunpowder has only been around for about 25 Generations (1000 years) while the TV is only 101.
I think Daenerys isn’t a direct cause of magic returning to the world, but Daenerys’s dragons and magical destiny are proof of the return of magic to the world, and that it ebbs and flows
What do you feel will be Arya's book future, my justification now for the show's Arya path is that the Faceless Men thru worship of all the gods and Death plus incorporating the lives and exhistence of the people whoe faces they cull gives them magic sight as well into future past connections and the avatar FM wearing Jaquin Hagar as prisoner was on his way to end up part of the future army to fight the Dead and Night King who steals the dead from the God of Death not just the living from the Light/Life Gods. Jaquin Hagar Meeting Arya who as a 1st Man & warg descendant perceive her as a potential follower to add to the end fight to stop the Night King and the Dead army in honor of the God of Death retoring the balance of Life protectors Jon, Jaime, Brienne, Lord Barric, Thoros fighting for the living while Faceless Men fight FOR THE DEAD who are part of the way of life cycle. Ergo IMHO the GoT writer's choice to then use ARYA as the final one out of many to do THE DEED especially as they had the Valyrian dagger meme have Bran give it to her as he could see the future WAS VALID and poetic.

7:10 Howland sees a green dream of inside the Tower of Joy. And at the tower does the following. Howland: "Arthur, stop! Lyanna is dying and the baby has to be kept safe. Ned will take it to Winterfell, the safest place it will be. If you kill him, everything will be undone and Rhaegar's son will die!" Arthur: "I believe you... but they will never let this go if I remain alive. They will doubt and they will hunt, so the baby will never be safe. Kill me, Ned. That's how it has to be." Thus Arthur sacrifices his life for the safety of the son of his prince and his friend, taking the secret to his grave. A way more believable scene than what happened in the show.
@@Art-is-craftBetter than shotgun or Arthur losing in a 1v2 . We saw what Barristan is capable of ,and with Dawn it seems unlikely that it was loss due to combat or ambush. It's more likely they schemed together.
magic must be a real pain in the arse for writers, you essentially have to tip toe around it, less they make it overpowered, hell even Tolkien had to come up with arbitrary reasons why Gandalf couldn't just magic the quest over
Ain't no way George says ASOIAF is a low magic fantasy when the Rhoynar could kill dragons from the air with jets of water, drown entire cities and the Children Of The Forest could engolf continental areas with the hammer of waters, on the plot magic is low but on the universe magic is as powerful as many other fantasies
Blood magic is all about sacrifice, and I think that's the terrible secret to what happened at Summerhall. Aegon V and his pyromancers had researched all remaining Valyrian dargon lore, magic, etc and worked out that it wasn’t just fire and blood that was needed but a blood sacrifice of someone that was beloved to the caster. The greater the sacrifice the greater the reward. The legend of Azor Ahai and Nisa Nisa practically spells it out explicitly and Daenerys's sacrifice not just of Miri Mazdur but of Khal Drogo, and in a round about way, her unborn son confirms it. Aegon called together his entire family, all of the blood of the dragon, and intended to sacrifice some of them as part of the ritual. Likely seven for the seven eggs he wished to hatch. Ser Duncan likely stopped him by releasing them. That's why the few that survived never spoke about what took plsce as Aegon V had been so beloved and everyone that was there was deeply traumatized.
Traditionally necromancy is the act of talking to the dead or summoning spirits/demons to do your bidding. It often did involve blood(a circle or sigil to contain the spirit/demon) & body parts like a skull as well as some other offering (bribe)to the demon or personal possession of the spirit being contacted (or a body part of that individual like a bone )Creating literal zombies that you can control is more of a Caribbean (voodoo) practice but I guess it could qualify as necromancy as well. Most lore about the undead (ghosts, revenants, druagrs, vampires, wraiths etc )are simply cursed undead beings & not anything created by or controlled by a human necromancer. Of course this has changed in modern fantasy stories as all stories, myths & folklore evolve over time.
euron uses wind magic to make his ship faster. some sort of blood magic. victarion does this as well, but thru the red priest he rescued otw to danny. melakor was probably worth mentioning this video
I think causes and consequences are messed up in most of the theories, because people fully embraced the words of simpletons, say, from Essos. IMO, dragons didn't cause magic to return, nor did they amplify it. I think it's something similar to a high tide. The tide has turned and magic became stronger, while causing many things to happen: 1. It increased the power of Others 2. It made young Starks arcane and unlocked their abilities 3. It allowed the witch to sacrifice Drogo and Dany's child, bringing the desired outcome 4. It helped the warlocks to shine 5. It did the same to the red priests 6. It made possible for Dany to hatch the dragons 7. etc
Yup, that guarantee is the Writer Grrm lol. He literally confrimed in his Interviews that Jon will resurrect the same way in the book as he did in the show lol....
Mating wolf with wolf. That doesn’t equate to warging a man to rape a woman. Horrific but isn’t the “abomination” listed. It’s mating with another wolf while warging in your own wolf.
If the 3eyed crow could see into the future, why wouldn't he see that trying to convert Euron was a bad idea and thus leave him to be where he was? Granted, the threat of Euron plays a role in the future of the world, so he was somewhat forced to open his eyes, but if the future was so concretely meant to be then why bother trying to do anything with anyone? It will happen whether he tries or not, right?
There's a little plot hole there. If you only stole one cask of the shadow wine how could you be addicted to it and also share or make others drink it. Unless it's one of those majic wine casks that never runs dry
Water magic is also a thing though it could be argued that ice and water magic have the same scorce as the magic of the old gods. The others are created by the magic of the children of the Forrest and there magic is a kind of nature magic powered by blood. I believe that the nature magic of the children of the Forrest is a corrupted form of nature magic that was once powered by water. Anyway water magic was used by garth the green and by the people of the rhoyne. There are good theories on this but water magic is definitely a thing.
That's an interesting Bran warging and raping someone theory you have there. But have you considered fucking no stop it? I know you only mentioned it and didn't come up with it but god damn I hope that doesn't happen.

This was very interesting and I always appreciate when things said are backed up with text from the source. Well done and many thanks to you!
Larys Strong is also a rumored Greenseer. Alys Rivers is also said to have been able to see visions in storm clouds, water, and flames
I laughed out loud when you hit us with the Stanis “fewer” 😂
Thanks for the arduous research to share
Oh, blessed be the algorithm🐲 I've found myself another soft spoken youtuber with good diction to explain ASOIAF stuff to me 💖
This was a great video! I love the Alt+Shift sttle of making the video as well! I have an entire channel of content to watch! Keep up the great work!
Really impressed with the quality of this video, gonna check out your other stuff
Very nice in-depth tackling of this topic!liked it very much
I think Aerys was also Dragon Dreamer and he saw others invade Kings Landing thats why he commanded to place wildfire all over the city
so when he said famous worlds "Burn them all"
he meant the others not people, Aeris wanted be ready to blow up whole city to get rid of others if they enter city .
Thats a nice paradox
Lol. I was thinking "fewer" before the clip. Nicely done. Count-nouns scre people up a lot once you start to notice it.
That was incredibly satisfying!! Thank you so much for the work you do!!
6:26 Religions in asoiaf are interesting because of the way various beliefs created by George RR Martin reflect real world beliefs throughout our history. George uses religion within his books to subtly display the effect different sources of magic have had on shaping people and their beliefs throughout the history of his fantasy world. Truly unmatched worldbuilding
Great video! Love your content
There's spells used to make Valerian steel and spells woven into the Red Keep.
I really like these videos! Hope there are more coming!
@@jeambeam3173
They don't know what caused the Doom, and if it was Magic, it wasn't DUE to magic being the issuI, rather lacktherof
If the Fire Mages weren't killed off by the Faceless Men, Valyria would still be around in full.
And yes, having a Dragon is great, but not if you're in the Red Keep and Vhagar or Caraxes are parked outside the city 😅
@@Ashbrash1998
So, they just never really thought about it and so therefore didn't pursue it, they just didn't take an interest?
This was a really well put together video!
*plugs this video into my IV*
This is exactly the video I was looking for.
Great video - Rikkon had the same dream.....dope.
Magic is my favourite aspect of the series, I'm so exited to watch the dunk and egg show if there really is magic in it (if it is bloodraven using glamour it will all be worth it)
Great Video.Loved it .The Artwork was magnificent 💯. 😊aA
I personally believe that it was the Red Comet that brought Magic back to the World.
No. It is a sign of the age not an age of it self.
This makes me wonder if John Snow, assuming he is still a Stark & a Targaryen, could worg with a dragon. I thought for sure that's where it was going when he and Daeneyrs hooked up, and they would go into the final battle together.
I never considered that because I didn't know Jon was able to warg, but that sounds SICK
I heard a theory that the reason Valyrians never invaded Westeros for its gold was because they were scared of wargs taking control of their dragons.
And he does have pseudo-prophetic dreams anyway, but I guess that could be from Ned's side of the family.
I think he will use Dawn but then give it back to House Dayne afterwards.
31:43 "Fewer" 😂
Fantastic video,
"Any day now" this days first laugh, thanks:)

Every time he talks about winds of winter it makes me sad we will never see a dream of spring
Dragondreamers are said to be "rare and secretive" but I swear more than half the Targaryens are dragondreamers.
This a detail that really annoyed me I wish that they had been more selective with who the dragon dreamers were
It think it might have something to do with all the subsequent members of house Targaryan being decended from Deanys the Dreamer.
- Daenys
- Daeron (son of Maekar)
- Aemon (son of Maekar)
- Daemon II Blackfyre
- Daenerys Stormborn
The biggest glamor is unfortunately the mystical book the winds of winter and how far it truly is in its completion. If he had a problem with wanting to scrap and start again maybe entrust it to secret editors that would edit and secure its existence. Once he had enough he could release them as parts of the same mythical yarn, ensuring it's readers and yet nearing a sense of accomplishment versus what we truly have years upon years of empty promises.
He is waiting to have enough space from the show and there will be differences.
AWESOME VIDEO!!!
This is why I subbed!
I believe the books imply the Summer Islanders use sex magic.
I’m hoping that the Beesburrys use sugar to access magical powers.
One of the sorcerers could be the first Rhaenys who probably hatched Quicksilver after the letter on Dragonstone
I like your style man. Earned a sub!
It would have been cool to have an episode with just ned and howland. Somewhat obscure but probably really good for a buddy conversation
Excellent quality video ser
Dope video! Thanks g!
what about the warlocks magic? it seems very different in the show at least (not a bookreader), like they can multiply, teleport(dani inside the house of the undying, and they can zoom around aswell), animate shackles and such.
@@checkm8964 would make sense that it's similar to the magic Milasandra uses to look young
what you see in the show is just an illusion, so glamor?
but in the books their unnaturally long lives are the result of blood magic at the very least. they have this blue beating heart that floats in-between all of their mostly lifeless bodies and they try to steal her life force.
I'd love to learn more about skagos where Rick on went in the books if I remember right. I've not seen anything about it. It's like one of those little things that don't get much attention. Unless I've not found it yet
thank you for the vid.

Howland sees a green dream of inside the Tower of Joy. And at the tower does the following.
Howland: "Arthur, stop! Lyanna is dying and the baby has to be kept safe. Ned will take it to Winterfell, the safest place it will be. If you kill him, everything will be undone and Rhaegar's son will die!"
Arthur: "I believe you... but they will never let this go if I remain alive. They will doubt and they will hunt, so the baby will never be safe. Kill me, Ned. That's how it has to be."
Thus Arthur sacrifices his life for the safety of the son of his prince and his friend, taking the secret to his grave.
A way more believable scene than what happened in the show.
How is that more believable?
😅😅😊
My favorite sorcerer is Tyrek Lannister. Can’t believe he turned himself into a horse in the middle of a riot. So bad ass
Cool video
is it just me or do the side effects of blood magic (specifically on targaryens) match up pretty close to radiation poisoning?
Why?
17:10 - More likely is that Nymeria did the wolf howl
i am kinda sure that there is also some power in runes and glyphs
Or alternatively, Aegon had tried to find another way, failed, and got most of his family killed anyway.
I believe all of the Stark children have warg power.
Yeah I saw a someone said Robb may have tried to warg into his wolf before he died but then it got killed as well
Traditionally necromancy is the act of talking to the dead or summoning spirits/demons to do your bidding.
The Children also used water magic to break the Arm of Dorne.
I think the winged wolf is Jon he’s chained by the nights watch and is freed by resurrecting
This video exposes the danger of the audiobooks. The pace is too much to absorb all the information 😮😮😮
I think Bran already Broke the third Abomination in the Prologue of the book when six skins passes into his wolf
So does that mean that Jon could be a greenseer too? Or is that a mix of north and dragon magic? Ice and fire… oh lol
Time Travel ? 👀 ( changing the past or future, basically what happened to Hodor )
That’s in the TV show.
Unless you're talking about the town up the road from Reading, UK, then Slough is pronounced sloff.
euron uses wind magic to make his ship faster. some sort of blood magic.
victarion does this as well, but thru the red priest he rescued otw to danny. melakor was probably worth mentioning this video
I think causes and consequences are messed up in most of the theories, because people fully embraced the words of simpletons, say, from Essos.
IMO, dragons didn't cause magic to return, nor did they amplify it. I think it's something similar to a high tide. The tide has turned and magic became stronger, while causing many things to happen:
1. It increased the power of Others
2. It made young Starks arcane and unlocked their abilities
3. It allowed the witch to sacrifice Drogo and Dany's child, bringing the desired outcome
4. It helped the warlocks to shine
5. It did the same to the red priests
6. It made possible for Dany to hatch the dragons
7. etc
What if the rise of the white walkers from their long summer hibernation and the imminent long winter also triggered the revival of magic?
So… Fire, air, water… and earth?!…. DAMMIT AANG!!!!
Did amthyst empress have purple eyes
Okay but do we know or is there any guarantee that John is even going to be resurrected in the books?
Yup, that guarantee is the Writer Grrm lol. He literally confrimed in his Interviews that Jon will resurrect the same way in the book as he did in the show lol....
Is Warging a magical power or a psychic power?
I am only a little familiar with the story. Does the face changing assassin that Arya Stark befriends possess magical abilities?
I also wondered this, are they just silence of the lambing it? Or is it magic. I hope someone knows the answer 😅
What about shadow binders ?
Did someone move to ice lands along time ago for the others to form?
book bran quite the monster huh
Sadly he said we will never go to Asshai only in flashbacks too bad it’s a good place for world building
Mating wolf with wolf.
That doesn’t equate to warging a man to rape a woman.
Horrific but isn’t the “abomination” listed. It’s mating with another wolf while warging in your own wolf.
Don't have sex when warging
Wolf with Wolf is an abstraction
Why didnt the promise one use dragon glass to cut down the others instant of plunging sword in his love
Maybe it's not a bad idea
Magic returning bought the dragons back not the other way around.
There's a little plot hole there. If you only stole one cask of the shadow wine how could you be addicted to it and also share or make others drink it. Unless it's one of those majic wine casks that never runs dry
One cask is a lot to drink for one person. Consuming every day over a long period could be how it happens.
Faceless Men are Flesh Sculptors a form of Biomancer

That's an interesting Bran warging and raping someone theory you have there. But have you considered fucking no stop it?
