  • Quest 3 has been my VR headset for a while, but I just bought a brand new PC so I can play PCVR with Quest 3 via Steam Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop. I do an unboxing of the new PC, as well as test it against my "old" computer (with a 2080ti graphics card) to see how it compares. Tested with NO MAN'S SKY and RAFT (with a VR MOD) to show detail and frame rate differences side-by-side. Was the cost of this DELL-BUILD Alienware computer worth it? The jury is out - let's see what we find out!

    that's a pretty decent PCVR PC, which should work for quite some time. Apart from the memory, which should be at least 64GB in my opinion, the only thing i would have changed is the CPU platform, because this generation of mainboards with the FCLGA1700 socket will not be upgradable anymore. The Ryzen 7800X3D is the much better option with a similar to faster performance and lower price plus lower power consumption. Also the AM5 platform will be compatible to future AMD CPUs. I would not choose Intel for any gaming PC. The 7950X or the X3D versions are a very good option too, if you want to use the PC for productivity.

      Good points here, and I did agonize a bit over Intel vs. Ryzen (my old computer is a Ryzen). Everything I read online had pluses and minuses for each, so went with what the Alienware from Dell came with. But I see your points, and you may very well be right on that one.

    theres a lot of info that could have been added to the video. i also own a 2080 ti and would like to know are you using link cable or wireless pcvr if wireless what router and settings do you have. also what meta link pc app settings are you using 72hz 80hz 90hz ect and what render resolution you have it set. are you using steam vr what settings do you have steam vr set to? and if you are using metas pcvr link are you using OculusDebugTool? i get good results with a 2080 ti just changing a lot of these settings but having a 4080 super or a 4090 can change diff be a upgrade to the settings

      GREAT points here, and I'm in the process of testing Steam Link vs Virtual Desktop with the VR BEAST to see how they work and compare. I'll probably do a video of that coming soon as well! For now - using Steam Link over WIFI 5 for the tests in this video. Set to 72hz. Hope that helps!

    I have a quest 3 and run virtual Desktop with 72hz and with all the settings maxed out and enabled darker darks and brighter brights. I also am using the snapdragon sharpening techniques enabled. If you have a high end wifi 6 system like my 2000 dollar one, I recommend it and set the steamVR to 70%. This will off load all the pc performance to the headset. Using the oculus software or the steamVR app in quest 3 for wifi it looks okay but virtual desktop takes it to the next level. No man's sky will look awesome too with all settings maxed. Running this setup is like running the index at 500% supersampling. It is super sharp, colors pop, darks and brights pop. and you have improved performance fps.

      All great points - I will be looking into all of this, and testing more out going forward now that I have the machine here, and initial tests proving fruitful! More Virtual Desktop testing coming vs steam link as well!

      i would not recommend setting the STEAM VR resolution to anything else than 100%. Changing that value in any direction uses more VRAM and the image the game renders is downscaled just to be upscaled by Virtual Desktop again. It's much better to use DLSS in games like No Man's Sky, either going for VD HIGH and DLSS set to Quality or VD GodLike and DLSS set to Performance up to Quality depending on your GPU and VRAM capacity. But either way, VD's option for SuperResolution and Sharpening really enhances the image quite a lot.

  • @vrmonsi
    @vrmonsi 13 днів тому

    Your internal gam resolution I noticed was set to 150%. For me, this always makes games lag. After setting this to 100 or 103 it's always smooth for me on my low end build

      Nice point - I'll have to test that out as well.... I don't even remember boosting that, but that may have been back from my Valve Index days, and I never tried setting back to 100. Thanks much!

    I mostly play PCVR and I would highly recommend going for 80hz instead of 72hz. 80hz more or less looks like 90hz to most people and it just feels better than playing at 72hz.

Not so great on the older one, but playable. Would love Foveated rending with eye-tracking in a non-PS headset someday soon. Meta, get on that. We love ya!

    Greetings, oh bearded One. I see your new alien friend is faring well, hu?^^ Eff it, i'm officially jealous again... I did look at the overall performance on your wrist-meter: Have you noticed how much more strain is put on the old machine? Your new VR Beast isn't only faster, it also carries the load with much less system resources spent. That speaks for itself and SCREAMS! for higher quality graphics settings ;) If i had the opportunity i would go all out except for the overclocking, like you said. Otherwise i agree with Chris, my pre-author. Virtual Desktop has a whole bag of tricks up it's sleeve and you shouldn't miss out on those. And now go and have fun , you little rascal ;P

      Thanks for the message, and yeah, as I was editing the video, I noticed the same you did - how much better both GPU and CPU did handing everything. I guess I should expect that (and it better for the cost!) LOL.... The cool thing is, I didn't realize how choppy things looked on my old computer till I got the new one, but I've had a BLAST playing stuff for YEARS in VR on that old one! Even without top-of-the-line, VR is still awesome! Oh, and I'm testing out Virtual Desktop now as well, especially for MSFS 2020 - video coming soon on that!

    Virtual desktop has gave me nothing but issues. terrible black edges glitching in soon as you load it up. and it goes to syteamVR environment and it's so bad i can
    't shut it down and have to hard rest my headset. I even bought a wifi 6 router. gave up and just use link cable and get to play instead of getting all hot and bothered trouble shooting for nothing. I had it work once or twice pretty well but always with stutter. I gave up on it and using link cable have no problems and tbh the cable makes no difference. If it works for you though that is great. I wish I hadn't spent £15 on virtual desktop. I coulda got a game. but everyone was sayingf that was the way to go.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  13 днів тому

      Yeah, it's interesting how some people have more trouble with Virtual Desktop than others. I've had some issues, but not bad, and it seems to run fine. And if the cable works for you, just go with that. Totally good! If you haven't already, you could try STEAM LINK as well. I've used that a lot and had almost NO issues. It's pretty much install and go. Very simple.

    I wanted to get a laptop that has a 4070 that's on sale for $1000. Do you think this is good enough to use for VR???

    • @nishomzawan5196
      @nishomzawan5196 13 днів тому

      For 1000 usd you probably can't get a better Gpu than a 4070 in a laptop, would love to see what other specs that particular laptop got?

    • @davidlucena6797
      @davidlucena6797 13 днів тому

      A 4070 mobile could be considered a bottom line mid-tier GPU, which isn't the best but is mid-tier anyway, what holds it back is that it has less VRAM than its desktop counterpart. Aside from that, being a laptop, you should also consider the CPU (since you won't be able to change any of those after), and the available RAM, as it is also important for stable PCVR, 32 gigs and above is recommended... And for your own sake, do get a cooling base for your laptop, as it will inevitably run hot while playing, even the best cooling systems benefit with a cooling base.

    • @moibuspm
      @moibuspm 13 днів тому

      @nishomzawan5196 ASUS TUF 15.6. It has an i7. All other 4070s go for $1500 on sale and my current PC is 10 years old so it can't run any VR what so ever. I wanted something that can at least run games like Skyrim VR. I'm tired of Quest 3 basic games.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  12 днів тому

      Great question, and I'm always a desktop person instead of laptop, but I don't have to be mobile at all with it. As far as I know, for the money, you'll still get better performance and specs from a desktop than a laptop, for the price. However, there are AMAZING laptops out there that will play VR. But, when you look at the 4090 card, for example, it's bigger and heavier than most laptops by themselves. Can not get something like that in a laptop. I'd bet that, even the 4070 for desktop will be more powerful than the one in a laptop, but I can't be sure on that one. Great question - and whatever you do, try to upgrade so you can play PCVR. Even if not perfectly. It's amazing, as you know.

    Haha.. i love that youre careful. But you wont cook the gpu if you OC it. You wouldnt even know how to do that. Gpu's nowadays have so many fail safes that you really have nothing to worry about. If the very small chance that it cooks... by some miracle. Then just dont twll them and they have absolutely no way of knowing. CPUs do have a little bit more of a chance which i dont see you doing it, you are using more the 4090 than anything else.
    I love how excited you are. Id be over the moon with a 4090! I hope you get the most out of it and enjoy!
    Btw.. you can get up to 120 not 90 now. So at least go to 90. Theres soooo many PCVR games that absolutely amaze

      Great points, and I look forward to experimenting with overclocking at some point hopefully soon! I think I'm going to try some 120hz vs 72hz soon to see if I notice a major difference there. More frames are better, but I just don't seem to notice a major difference, so I keep it at 72. I think my eyes and brain just don't register it the same as some. Thanks for the advice!

      not really, to be honest. CPU load on some games could be higher than a midrange Ryzen 5800X3D can handle. That is the bare minimum you need to run PCVR. If you have a 4090 everything below a Ryzen 7800X3D would not make any sense.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  12 днів тому

      LOL - I'll bet it would help, but I've found that CPU is just as important as GPU for VR, for some reason. Or at least close to it. So, upgrading the CPU was important to, I suspect.... but would be a good test, if I could fit the 4090 in my old machine! I think it's too big! LOL

  • @andyakarudolfhessiansack7936

    You need to discard all the BS about VDXR and virtual desktop. No matter what anyone says it can never provide the visuals link cable can.
    I have a 4090 and 7800x3d and have tweaked this setup with quest 3 to the max.
    Try 72hz on max res in oculus. Then download oculus tray tool and supersample to 1.4. Depending on the game you can then run massive visuals at native 72hz or if on a demanding game like MSFS 36fps with ASW on auto.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  13 днів тому

      That may be possible, and perhaps I'll rebuy a link cable (gave mine to a friend years ago), and do some tests. I've found the graphics to be just great wireless, and I do LOVE not having the cable. More than I even thought I would, having played on Valve Index for many years. And I will try out the tray tool with the super-sampling. See if that makes it even better, but so far - very pleased! Thanks for the comment.
