I upgraded to v65 today, after not using my Quest 3 for a few weeks and had a "holy cow" moment in DCS World. The image was so clear and smooth, it felt like a new headset. So yeah, I agree with you, it definitely got better.
@@Torcsen No, upscaling is OFF, other settings are the usual (4x MSAA, 16x Anisotropic, no clutter/grass etc) I have an RTX 4080 and 64GB memory though, which helps. Think it was more the clarity of the images that struck me, felt "crisper" than before

@@beninkypoo1749 The CL has passthrough but the cameras are low-res black and whites. Worse still, SimXR and the free Color Panel depend on the Chroma filters of Virtual Desktop, and the CL is not compatible with Virtual Desktop. Mixed Reality is far beyond the Crystal and Crystal Light
I have both and I use both for completely different reasons. The crystal, paired with my 4090 is my go to for simulations. If the Q3 had eye tracking and DP I dont think I would have the crystal.

Hi Steve! I recommend that you turn off videobuffering because it adds a LOT of latency. Also that you use the full 200Mbps bitrate along with the AV1 codec. If by any chance your router does not run flawlessly with the full bandwidth, you can't really say if the lack of displayport is a problem or not, right? At the 90 FPS setting and below in VD, I am not able to find any visual flaw due to compression of the image which was a shocking revalation to me. I also recommend that you turn off Snapdragon upscaling which does nothing to improve the image when in godlike mode.
SIMXR is really cool paired with Foreflight on an iPad. It's super immersive being able to read everything on the iPad via passthrough and reach out and actually use your fingers to interact with it as normal vs Navigraph where you have to use your controllers or a mouse. But the biggest issue for me with SIMXR is that if you push your settings too far and have the creeping black borders on the edges when turning your head, because the passthrough is going in the background, the black borders will present as passthrough image which can be quite distracting. Hopefully something can be done about that in future updates so I dont have to substantially reduce my image quality to reduce latency.
Hi Steve, I am absolutely with you that Q3 plus a DP headset is the perfect combination. I was lucky to get me a XR-3 for a price lower than the Crystal light. And the clearity of it is of course so much better in MSFS. With the 4090 I am also able to supersample the resolution to use the additional focal displays for even more sharpness in the sweetspot. Also it got a fantastic passthrough with masking features as well. If I wouldn’t have had the chance to get it for this ridiculous price , I definitely would have gone to the Crystal light as well. But for now I am extremely happy with my combination.
The story is, that of course it is a used one. But it has the offline license, so no subscription is needed. The 3,5mm audio port is damaged, only the left channel is functional. No big deal, as I use in ear headphones with a WiFi dongle. So no lag in audio and very comfortable. The big deal was, that the left lens was scratched from the usage with glases. That was a little risky, as it was clearly visible in VR. But after a careful treatment mit polywatch (polisher) the scratches are gone and the image is crystal clear again. So I was able to remove the scratches! And now it rocks again! 😁

Visual clarity is one thing but how about butter smoothness looking out the side window down at the ground shortly after take off ?
I have the same question. I'm excited about the visual clarity of the Crystal Light and thinking about buying one, however, I also really like using motion reprojection on my Quest 2 in MSFS with VD to achieve the crisp super smooth ground effect on objects during take-off/landing and flying low to the ground.
Can I ask...Your resolution/clarity on your videos, I take it your personal visuals (through your headset) are much poorer?! I have RTX4080, Quest 3 (link cable via VD) - I'm just not impressed with the visual clarity - graphics look rather PS3! I have all setting as per your previous recommendations, with some minor tweaks to keep my FPS to 40ish. (nothing on ultra)
So basically g2 is sharper in the centre but quest 3 is not as sharp but it’s sharper over the whole fov rather than the g2 with its tiny sweet spot but then there’s the usb compression too I guess bloody hell meta all we needed was a display port and would sell loads more I still have the quest 2 sat collecting dust

Great video Steve. Very interesting with the pass through feature. I really need to get the FS rig setup again and check it out. Personally I have found the Quest 3 a massive step up coming from Quest 2 and Rif-S and have never had any issues. The pass-through from day 1 was very impressive with just a little warping on the edges but could walk around my house, up and down stairs, read my phone etc whilst using pass through. Being able to create pass-through holes could potentially be pretty useful being able to see your physical controls instead of feeling around blind. With regards to DP, thats always been bit of a weird one for me as it's pretty old tech now and everything is USB-C or wireless. Although from what I understand USB-C has some performance issues due to compression. I've mostly used my Q3 wirelessly on sim racing with Virtual Desktop but using 6E Wifi routers.
When I tried the Q3 the first thing I noticed and prevented me to upgrade my G2 to Q3 was that I was able to see the pixel grid, especially when you move your eyes
You can see the pixel grid on all headsets. It's always going to be that way unless the lenses have soft focus in which case you'll lose your ability to pixel hunt. For me personally the pixel grid on the crystal was actually more noticeable than that on the Q3. Also the crystal (at least the one I had) had very bad MURA, but some people say their headset doesn't have it so...
How does your VD show 4 options for frame rate? Mine only shows 72 or 90fps? Also snapdragon is available for you to select in godlike mode but for me I can only select this when Im in high mode? I have an 4080 card

As expected, I'm glad I purchased the Quest 3. As updates and DCS continue, the picture quality, picture quality, and FOV are getting better. As expected, Meta Company is amazing. It is different from small and medium-sized VR companies.
Yeah, I'm not too happy about the complete lack of silence from Valve. It has me finally considering options I never would have a couple years ago. There still isn't a complete upgrade from Index without any compromises on at least one aspect of that HMD from 2019. Valve is the company that has shown the world it understands better than any other what a good VR hardware system is, but they have either given up or are keeping something extremely well hidden.
The Quest 3 is not a PCVR headset, it can do PCVR, but that is not the primary function. The Crystal Light is a PCVR headset and that is it's main function and it is better at it than the Quest 3.

Thank you for this video, just one question, you say that If only the resolution were better on the quest 3.... Are you using the max resolution in the quest link app? Some times it says 1.5x some times 1.3x.... If you're using the maxed resolution and you don't like it the pimax must some something out of this world. In my case, I can't tolerate the standard resolution that comes with the quest 3, but the maxed resolution is preety good
I upscale my Quest 3 to a crazy 4142x4142, but there's only so super sampling can do and it can start to look synthetic, against the native resolution of the Crystal, especially with its QLED colours. Thanks for watching 👍
The pimax has more than double the pixels, and QLED vs LCD blacks & colours. Plus it can actually display native resolution without the ~40ms additional encoding delay. Which while not a deal breaker for flight simming, it's huge for sim racing and for some people's comfort levels. I'm not saying the Quest isn't punching above its weight. It has advantages like being able to see your controls and hands in mixed reality. If you have one and it meets your expectations, you should be happy. Just don't try and claim they're equivalent. And probably don't try a Pimax unless you're prepared to invest in a top end GPU.
As good as the quest 3's visuals are the pimax's resolution is just a whole other world. Seeing the branches of trees that are ~10 miles out in DCS for example. Quest 3's lenses are a lot better though (almost no CA or distortion), so its swings and roundabouts. I personally hate CA so I have to go with the Q3 but if you have good tolerance for it then the crystal is the better picture.

Update: My patience ran out 🙂 No update despite leave the headset powered up and on charge overnight several times. Further research indicated that Sleep Mode was the issue. I still had mine set to the default. Set it 4hrs and left overnight on charge again and job done 👍 It is mentioned on the Quest Support website, but not clear that the default will need to be changed. I just asummed that Meta would set up the headset by default to permit updates! RTFM as they say 🙂
A warning about the Q3 . I have a Q2 headset that has been ok so i upgraded to the Q3 but the cable i used with the Q2 wouldn't work with the Q3 so i spent £90 on the meta cable that only gave me a yellow light and crackling sound on both my Q2 and Q3 headset my old cheap cable works fine on my Q2 but not on the Q3 .The support from meta was we couldn't find the faults so tough . I'd avoid this peace of junk!!
I'm still using a Quest 2 and I'm not interested in buying another Quest headset unless it has a DP port, I've used a Quest 3 and even in regular PCVR gameplay, using Air Link, Meta Link cable or Virtual Desktop thats supports AV1 encoding, the compression artifacts just ruin the experience for me, I know most people are fine with it and that's great for them.
either Quest 3 has to step up to DP, or Crystal has to have pass thru. I'll wait till someone takes the bull by the horns. My Reverb is now "dead" thanks to MS. So the wait continues for the VR to return to my sim.

I wouldn't say they are needed for MSFS or DCS, I use the mouse for both but I guess that would also depend on your sim setup, Personaly I would skip the pimax controllers, they are quite lacking. though I'm not sure if other 3rd party controllers work with the headset without light houses.
If you are a simracer, Quest 3 actually runs more efficiently than any native headset since you can cut some of the vertical FOV and gain massive performance.
@@jamesmanning8767 I couldn't do it with OpenComposite or OpenXR Toolkit with HP Reverb G2. The FOV was getting smaller but there was no performance gain or clarity increase.

I've never been more sure that I want to keep using my Reverb G2 until Microsoft turns it into a brick (probably 2026.) We've seen major leaps in VR headset performance this year, and in two years I'm hoping we'll finally get everything we want.
One consideration against the quest 3 is that its controllers are absolute garbage to the point of almost being unusable for games that require precision like shooters. To get decent experience out of a quest 3 for non flight sim games you need to buy the quest pro controllers as an aftermarket addon and they're about 3/4 of the price of the quest 3 itself.
All headsets have image compression. Displayport does not have the bandwidth to run a VR headset. The idea that wireless compression kills the quest is just anti meta rhetoric. The compression on the quest 3 isn't noticeable. Indeed I have yet to even see any image evidence of it, and the people who I have seen claim that they can see it also say ridiculous nonsense so I doubt what they are saying is true.
Hey Steve, you and VoodooDE are the only two UA-camrs who have tried the Somnium VR1 at this time. You keep referring to the Pimax Crystal Light as the best go-to PCVR HMD. Does that mean that you personally prefer the lower price and DMAS off-ear option over the larger FOV, presumably better lenses, and options for eye tracking and MR of the VR1? Thanks!
I will stick with my Reverb G2, the performance of the Quest 3 is abysmal at best on the Quest 3. Love the pancake lenses but Meta really screwed up when they removed the Display port connection, and basically destroyed any possibility that it will run any modern flight simulator at an acceptable level. All the technology is available now lets see which company brings Mixed reality home with pancake lenses like the quest 3 and a headset with a display port for performance like the Reverb G2. Until then the Reverb G2 is the winner hands down.
@@Emir_de_Passy For me, they were quite close. though I didn't play too much with custom quadview settings. my experience was overall better in the Q3 which is what I stuck with, but there was this one time I looked at the P47 in an external shot over some clouds and thought.. man that's nice. but not enough for me not to return the Crystal. but that was the 1500+$ version. these lower priced versions I would recommend you try yourself if you have the cash and hardware to run it.
If they had to release it with DP, it would kill everything on the market.

Is the snapdragon upscaling only for below Godlike?
It can upscale the potato, low, medium and high settings to ultra resolution. So if you are already on ultra or godlike, there is no benefit.

Very interesting with the pass through feature. I really need to get the FS rig setup again and check it out.
Personally I have found the Quest 3 a massive step up coming from Quest 2 and Rif-S and have never had any issues.
The pass-through from day 1 was very impressive with just a little warping on the edges but could walk around my house, up and down stairs, read my phone etc whilst using pass through.
Being able to create pass-through holes could potentially be pretty useful being able to see your physical controls instead of feeling around blind.
With regards to DP, thats always been bit of a weird one for me as it's pretty old tech now and everything is USB-C or wireless.
Although from what I understand USB-C has some performance issues due to compression.
I've mostly used my Q3 wirelessly on sim racing with Virtual Desktop but using 6E Wifi routers.
Is it worth getting the Pimax light with a 4070? Can i take advantage of the clarity with that card? or just get the Meta Q 3?

So if you have the pc with a 4090 you’d say go with the quest 3 or the crystal lite.
The Quest got exclusives, better OS, better QC, better tracking, an integrated chip, and is wireless. Even if you have a 4090, go for it
When I tried the Q3 the first thing I noticed and prevented me to upgrade my G2 to Q3 was that I was able to see the pixel grid, especially when you move your eyes
You can see the pixel grid on all headsets. It's always going to be that way unless the lenses have soft focus in which case you'll lose your ability to pixel hunt.
For me personally the pixel grid on the crystal was actually more noticeable than that on the Q3. Also the crystal (at least the one I had) had very bad MURA, but some people say their headset doesn't have it so...
How does your VD show 4 options for frame rate? Mine only shows 72 or 90fps? Also snapdragon is available for you to select in godlike mode but for me I can only select this when Im in high mode? I have an 4080 card
How would you compare the Quest 3 to the Pico 4 right now?
I had a Quest 3 after owning a Rift S. In DCS it did ok... on Flight Sim 2020 it was 2 images every 10 seconds. with the same settings.
Please could you do a performance comparison of quest 3 and Crystal Light on a card other than 4090?!

Yeah, I'm not too happy about the complete lack of silence from Valve. It has me finally considering options I never would have a couple years ago. There still isn't a complete upgrade from Index without any compromises on at least one aspect of that HMD from 2019. Valve is the company that has shown the world it understands better than any other what a good VR hardware system is, but they have either given up or are keeping something extremely well hidden.
Valve is the Dad who went for smokes 5 years ago, and never returned.

Quest 3 with VDRX in VD, Godlike preset AND QuadViews plugin is in Pimax cristal ground.
With display port, i can't imagine what it was going to be. i get vertical fov to 0.5 and pixel per eye to 2 and in app 72 hz. Difference is huge.
Can you try with a thunderbolt 4 cable and a thunderbolt 4 port on your computer it should normally have the same quality as the displayport!!
i wish we could get better displays though.

The Quest 3 is not a PCVR headset, it can do PCVR, but that is not the primary function. The Crystal Light is a PCVR headset and that is it's main function and it is better at it than the Quest 3.

I don't know why but I get much better Frame rate (60+FPS, TAA mode) & much smoother at 120 Hz, except I can't use pass through which is a pain

Thank you for this video, just one question, you say that If only the resolution were better on the quest 3.... Are you using the max resolution in the quest link app? Some times it says 1.5x some times 1.3x.... If you're using the maxed resolution and you don't like it the pimax must some something out of this world. In my case, I can't tolerate the standard resolution that comes with the quest 3, but the maxed resolution is preety good
I upscale my Quest 3 to a crazy 4142x4142, but there's only so super sampling can do and it can start to look synthetic, against the native resolution of the Crystal, especially with its QLED colours. Thanks for watching 👍
The pimax has more than double the pixels, and QLED vs LCD blacks & colours.
Plus it can actually display native resolution without the ~40ms additional encoding delay. Which while not a deal breaker for flight simming, it's huge for sim racing and for some people's comfort levels.
I'm not saying the Quest isn't punching above its weight. It has advantages like being able to see your controls and hands in mixed reality.
If you have one and it meets your expectations, you should be happy. Just don't try and claim they're equivalent. And probably don't try a Pimax unless you're prepared to invest in a top end GPU.
As good as the quest 3's visuals are the pimax's resolution is just a whole other world. Seeing the branches of trees that are ~10 miles out in DCS for example. Quest 3's lenses are a lot better though (almost no CA or distortion), so its swings and roundabouts. I personally hate CA so I have to go with the Q3 but if you have good tolerance for it then the crystal is the better picture.

Update: My patience ran out 🙂 No update despite leave the headset powered up and on charge overnight several times. Further research indicated that Sleep Mode was the issue. I still had mine set to the default. Set it 4hrs and left overnight on charge again and job done 👍 It is mentioned on the Quest Support website, but not clear that the default will need to be changed. I just asummed that Meta would set up the headset by default to permit updates! RTFM as they say 🙂
It really can't be emphasized enough just how important the optical quality of the lenses really is.

A warning about the Q3 .
I have a Q2 headset that has been ok so i upgraded to the Q3 but the cable i used with the Q2 wouldn't work with the Q3 so i spent £90 on the meta cable that only gave me a yellow light and crackling sound on both my Q2 and Q3 headset my old cheap cable works fine on my Q2 but not on the Q3 .The support from meta was we couldn't find the faults so tough .
I'd avoid this peace of junk!!
I'm still using a Quest 2 and I'm not interested in buying another Quest headset unless it has a DP port, I've used a Quest 3 and even in regular PCVR gameplay, using Air Link, Meta Link cable or Virtual Desktop thats supports AV1 encoding, the compression artifacts just ruin the experience for me, I know most people are fine with it and that's great for them.
either Quest 3 has to step up to DP, or Crystal has to have pass thru. I'll wait till someone takes the bull by the horns. My Reverb is now "dead" thanks to MS. So the wait continues for the VR to return to my sim.

I wouldn't say they are needed for MSFS or DCS, I use the mouse for both but I guess that would also depend on your sim setup, Personaly I would skip the pimax controllers, they are quite lacking. though I'm not sure if other 3rd party controllers work with the headset without light houses.

Negative. Why would you think that? Crystal Light is the way to go for PC VR Flight sims
If you are a simracer, Quest 3 actually runs more efficiently than any native headset since you can cut some of the vertical FOV and gain massive performance.
you can do this with any headset. The difficulty varies
@@jamesmanning8767 I couldn't do it with OpenComposite or OpenXR Toolkit with HP Reverb G2. The FOV was getting smaller but there was no performance gain or clarity increase.

I've never been more sure that I want to keep using my Reverb G2 until Microsoft turns it into a brick (probably 2026.)
We've seen major leaps in VR headset performance this year, and in two years I'm hoping we'll finally get everything we want.
One consideration against the quest 3 is that its controllers are absolute garbage to the point of almost being unusable for games that require precision like shooters. To get decent experience out of a quest 3 for non flight sim games you need to buy the quest pro controllers as an aftermarket addon and they're about 3/4 of the price of the quest 3 itself.
Compression kills the quest. Plain and simple. If the next one has wifi7 and a codec optimized for it maybe it'll be viable.
All headsets have image compression. Displayport does not have the bandwidth to run a VR headset. The idea that wireless compression kills the quest is just anti meta rhetoric. The compression on the quest 3 isn't noticeable. Indeed I have yet to even see any image evidence of it, and the people who I have seen claim that they can see it also say ridiculous nonsense so I doubt what they are saying is true.
While watching the news a few days ago, I heard that Pimax is a Chinese company.

Hey Steve, you and VoodooDE are the only two UA-camrs who have tried the Somnium VR1 at this time. You keep referring to the Pimax Crystal Light as the best go-to PCVR HMD.
Does that mean that you personally prefer the lower price and DMAS off-ear option over the larger FOV, presumably better lenses, and options for eye tracking and MR of the VR1?

I will stick with my Reverb G2, the performance of the Quest 3 is abysmal at best on the Quest 3. Love the pancake lenses but Meta really screwed up when they removed the Display port connection, and basically destroyed any possibility that it will run any modern flight simulator at an acceptable level. All the technology is available now lets see which company brings Mixed reality home with pancake lenses like the quest 3 and a headset with a display port for performance like the Reverb G2. Until then the Reverb G2 is the winner hands down.
My quest 3 runs better than the Crystal in Dcs all day.
How do it look compared to crystal? I imagine crystal looks quite a bit better with quad views

I have a Crystal that I didn’t even pay for and still don’t use it, always use the quest 3.
@@Emir_de_Passy For me, they were quite close. though I didn't play too much with custom quadview settings. my experience was overall better in the Q3 which is what I stuck with, but there was this one time I looked at the P47 in an external shot over some clouds and thought.. man that's nice. but not enough for me not to return the Crystal. but that was the 1500+$ version. these lower priced versions I would recommend you try yourself if you have the cash and hardware to run it.
It should run good. Lower resolution, not pushing 1/20 of the bitrate.
