Men that bitched about long hair on guys, were usually losing theirs. My uncle was on a rant about it once, and I reminded him that our Founding Fathers wore powdered wigs and pony tails. I'm sure he bitched until about long hair on men until he died, but he didn't bitch to me anymore!

You are about to dive deep into (to me) the best American lyricist in rock and roll. You will discover how you foretold a very special event in modern advertising. "Like a Rock" will remind you of many times you heard a song in a commercial that just stayed with you. If you want a song that showcases his singing and writing talents, "Night Moves" should be next. I've seen Seger in concert at least 10 times, and he and the Silver Bullet Band never disappoint.

I loved his band. Before that in the late 60's it was "The Bob Seger System". I think i was in 8th grade when RGM was released. ( Now called "dropped" which i still need to get use to). I'm old school, that's okay though, dropped or released, have the same meaning. My last Seger concert was his first show after having to take 10 years off for health problems. I have heard Bob's band was the first band to perform at the Palace of Auburn Hills, as well as being the last band to play there in 2017.

Alto Reed on sax. I was at one of their concerts and Alto trapezed above the audience while playing. It was very cool. Alto has passed away but played in the Silver Bullet Band for probably most if not all of his career. Between his Sax and Bob's piano or guitar they gelled perfectly. I first heard Bob Seger in 1968, Ramblin Gamblin Man. I was 11 or 12 then. Bob has a very unique piano sound, when you hear it you know it's Bob's. The last time i saw him in concert was the early 2000's at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids Mi. Bob has always loved Michigan, he very much represents us. There is a road named after him at Pine Knob, a concert venue just outside of Detroit. If you have never heard his song " The famous final scene" it's well worth a listen. All of his music is great. Another wonderful songwriter/musician from that era.

Segar (see-gur) is a fusion of blues/rock like Stevie Ray Vaughn and blue eyed soul like Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers singer). This one is a crowd pleaser w/ that sax. His song "Night Moves" though is truly a masterpiece. I think that's one of his fan's favorites among us all. It's a song about nostalgia and looking back on our young teenage wiling ways - the older you get, the more this song truly smacks home.
Segar also wrote a lot of songs for other artists, including Kenny Rogers.
Metallica did a cover of this song, and it is quite truly good! I still prefer Bob's original; but the Metallica cover is great. React to the cover, and compare the two!
Segar was one of my dad's favorite artists, and his song "Like a Rock" was like my dad's theme song - he always turned that one up a little louder and always said this was written for him. We played it at his funeral, in 2013, and I haven't listened to the song since. I can't find the desire to do so.

This is a great performance. Love that Bob is willing to be self-critical. Great sense of the hard life on the road, particularly for a low-level performer without handlers or bodyguards. Intense scene being confronted in the restaurant, "Hey, is that a woman or a man?" In the 1960's that was common, mocking and threatening long-haired guys. Bob "just want's to explode", but "you always feel outnumbered, and you don't dare make a stand". Then Bob's tired voice sings "Well, here I am,,," I wondered if this time he was confronting them?

He's on a tour bus. The line, "The same old cliches. Is it woman is it man?" is a reference to his long hair versus clean-cut truckers who would snicker or incite "hippies" at truck stops. Also, his name is pronounced SEE-ger and his band is The Silver Bullet Band. Thanks!

You had it perfect in your first break for comment … he’s just “Bob” to all of us. A legend. “Get outta Denver” “Katmandu” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and a s--ton of other bluesy, tough songs, with some soft ones as well!

I have listened to many kinds of music all my life, and there are many instruments I respond to. The cello, the piano, the oboe, the clarinet, the saxophone. But my favorite of all time is the acoustic guitar, especially when it is playing Mississippi Delta blues. Listen to Skip James, Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Patton and others to see what I mean. Perhaps I love this so much because my late husband used to play this music to me, and I miss him so much. Google Skip James, Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues, for a great example. Bluesy and gut-wrenching and mystical all at the same time.

Reed laid down his most iconic sax part just weeks after joining the Silver Bullet Band in 1971 when he went into the studio to work on “Turn the Page.” “Bob said to me, ‘I hear sax on this song,'” Reed told Rolling Stone in 2011. “I said, ‘I hear it too.’ Tom Weschler, the assistant manager at the time, said to me, ‘Picture that it’s late at night. It’s a black-and-white movie, like [1955 film noir] The Man with the Golden Arm. There’s some rain coming down in the alley. You’re standing by a street lamp and there’s a light mist off in the distance and you hear this plaintive wail. What does that sound like?'”

I saw Bob for my 4th time in Shreveport on his final tour. Picture this all lights go out. Pitch black arena and that sax riff comes out of nowhere. CHILLS!

You've gotta hit up, Night Moves. No matter who you are or how you were brought up, it'll take you back to your High School days. ⚡️⚡️
Dude, I played sax in high school and I know EXACTLY what you're saying. 👍🏽😎 But my love is drums, which is what I play now.
Yes, Metallica's version is excellent! 🔥

An Army buddy turned me onto Bob in '73...and 'forced' me to attend the Saturday evening show at Cobo Hall in '75. Tears were streaming down my face by the end of this song, even though I'd heard it dozens of times before. Saw him three more times...each concert magic.
While I'm generally not a fan of 'remakes' you should take a listen to Metallica's take...masterful. The accompanying video stars Ginger Lynn in a remarkably touching view of a world Bob had never imagined when he penned this song.

"You walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road..." What a great line for anyone who has done a long road trip. It's usually a fastfood place and everyone is either a local or someone just like you who is tired of sitting in a car. The clock is ticking, but it's time for a break and to actually meet and talk to people, instead of sitting in a car watching the mile markers flow by.

    Great review. Love Bob Seger.
He is definately talking about life as a musician:
Out there in the spotlight you're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy you try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play
Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers ringin' in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette, rememberin' what she said

    It’s Sea-ger
The theme of this song, was reproduced by Bon Jovi, in the late ‘80’s with Wanted: Dead or Alive.
Both these songs epitomize the life of a rock star’s life on the road, and make you appreciate seeing your favorite artist in concert.
Here’s to those who sacrifice to entertain their fans!!

Thank you for the reaction to Bob. He has been one of my favorites since I was a young lass.
I played violin in my youth, but as far as the instruments that touch my soul to hear, it's sax or piano. They tend to hit me equally.
