Everyone has favorites. For reactions, the problem is, there are only a handful of Seger music videos. “Roll Me Away” has a decent video. “Like a Rock” is a good song and video but most people grew tired of the song after GM used it for so long. “Mainstreet” is a good story ballad. No video for this or anything below. “Hollywood Night” is a great uptempo song. “Travelin Man / Beautiful Loser” or “Ramblin Gamblin Man” from Live Bullet are good. “Fire Down Below” is fun. The ladies like “Come to Poppa”. The gents like “Sunspot Baby”
Oh Yes, I showed up for Marine Corps boot camp with long hair parted in the middle. That was a big mistake!. I never will forgive my recruiter who did not warn me.
If you didn't say it, I would have. People today don't know too much about that because it seems so irrational that anyone would care about the length of your hair. At the time, it was anti-establishment, which put you in a different camp. It would absolutely trigger some people.
Bob's sax player, Alto Reed, passed away recently. Bob has decided that he's not going to tour anymore, because he doesn't want to play a concert without Mr. Reed.
@@sopdox i saw one...but I was too freakin drunk at 17 I didnt remember it...all I remember he had a beaut white suit on. Jesus before we got into a bar! Tbe girl I brought was like 15! She was dancing onthe tables...did that with another young girl...places let u get away with it back then. And with this other girl...we stole this car to go on a joy ride, her idea....and right away we hit a car and got out and ran...got away with it. I got home at 6 am and was sure I would get beat by my horrible father...but snuck in and got away with that one too. But the ones I didnt get away with.... Anybody got some stories?
The first time I saw Bob do this song live, it was in the mid-80's. Imagine this: The stage is completely dark. When Alto Reed plays the first notes, he is lit up in a blue spotlight. He is entirely dressed in white and is on the right side of the stage. As Bob starts singing, he is at the piano and lit by a red spotlight. For the entire of the song, the rest of the band is playing on a dark stage. It was visually stunning. Very memorable.
The song being about a rock star and life on the road, is actually a simile for life itself - ordinary life which has ups and downs, excitement and tedium, reward and failure, love and hatred, pain and joy, beauty and ugliness. Millions of people can watch and listen to the song, and they are not rock stars and never will be, but the song still reflects the vicissitudes of their own lives and is relatable. Great art has wide emotional appeal - and this applies to music of course.
I always thought the part about is that a woman or a man was very relatable to many as well. If you went to a lot of areas in the Country, it was not so common. I grew up in West Texas and there were a lot of rednecks who just might have said it.
I’ve learned over the years that it’s not the subject matter that matters, it’s the way you present it. The saying, “That guy could sing the phonebook and millions would buy the album” has a lot of truth to it.
Written in 1972 before he became a big star. This was an FM radio staple throughout the 70's and its appeal has never waned because underlying what he's specifically talking about is an expression of longing and loneliness and just feeling lost sometimes, which is a universal message. Plus his vocals, his lyrics and the arrangement are just so damn good. Thanks Harri, your analysis and sensitivity are why I follow you.
This song is really about isolation and how it affects people. Some people feel they are in really good company when they're alone with their own thoughts, but a lot of people go nuts when they're cut off from the mainstream of life. The loneliness and aloneness eat away at their psyche. Being a touring performer, product demonstrator, salesperson, professional athlete, etc. just amplifies the situation and can exacerbate the feelings of isolation and lead to major depression. The solo sax, the understated keys and bass lend a melancholy feel to an excellent mood poem.
Harri you know how sometimes you struggle to hear every lyric. Never happens with Bob Segar he has the clearest and phonetically clear voice. I was blessed to see him 5 times before he recently retired.
This was my brother's favorite song he sang it at Kareoke night he was a very good singer... he left us way to soon at age 58 all of a sudden in 2011 miss him so...this song was played at his memorial ....Enjoy your reactions
Bob Seger is truly one of America's best songwriter/singers. I grew up with him as a teen in the 70's but really appreciate his music so much more today than I did when I was younger.
One of the best songs ever written. I loved it in the 70's, my children, ages 42, 40, 34, 27 and 24, ALL love this song to this day..It was my son's FAVORITE song.
I grew up listening to Bob Seger and I love his music. Turn the Page is on of my favorites because it describes being on the road. Another song about being on the road that you should check out is Jackson Browne's song Loadout/Stay. It's amazing.
Awesome reaction to one of my favorite songs by Bob Seger. Thanks for doing this great song. Bob is a fantastic singer songwriter and compelling story teller through his music.
Music of my youth. The man has a diverse catalog and IMHO not a bad song in the whole lot. He is a national treasure. Got to see him live back in the day...awesome!
Thank You! You gave me husband back for a few minutes! He did all of Seger's stuff! I was transported back in time, and watching my Husband again, He had the hair, the beard, and the voice! I so miss him.

I think this song shows Bobs humanity. “Here I am, up on the stage. Here I go, playing the star again…”. I think this possibly shows some of Bobs own insecurities, and a lot of us could relate to that. He is just a person, like the rest of us, elevated to superstar status, because of hit songs and he was expected to live up to that. He didn’t care for life on the road, and was tired. But he always gave us 300% in his live shows. No one was better, and we still love him to this day. Thank you, Mr. .Bob seger!
This is such a weary tale. Based on a real incident, when he was driving all over from gig to gig in a old station wagon. Was recorded first in 1972, but this is the 1976 Live Bullet version. That’s one of two albums in 1976 that broke Seger out into the mainstream. The concert footage is mostly from the ‘70s. This video was made in 1995 with Bob at the keyboard. There is a good Metallica cover of this song, that more angry and driving, but I still prefer this one. And Alto Reed on Sax is iconic.
And if memory serves (been a while since I broke out the old vinyl lp), the sax part in the original studio version is completely different. I prefer the "Live Bullet" version.
Bob Seger is one of the greatest musical storytellers to ever do it! The only white person to ever be offered a contract by Motown. A true American living legend!!
I think the draw is to the points where everyone can relate to loneliness, and feeling judged by those who don't know them while at their most vulnerable.
This song is not only about how to "turn the page" but also asks about what happens when you can no longer turn the page. It sounds like he stays where he is, and watches himself walk away from himself.

Nice list. a few more great early Seger songs are "Persecution Smith" , "East Side Story" and "Noah".
"Is that a woman or a man?" refers to the predjudice that people had for guys with long hair in the 60's and 70's.
its very ironic because in the 80's a lot of guys looked like female hookers from the 70's

The wonderful Alto Reed. Rest Easy.
Main Street is another good one.
Excellent reaction. The road, brilliant that's what it's all about every job becomes routine
We've all heard of Southern Rock, but there was also a genre called Northern Rock and Bob Seger and his Silver Bullet Band was a prime example.
Fire Down Below is another great Bob Seger song.

He was a master story-teller.
The best “life on the road” song of a rock star/musician IMO. Weariness and loneliness just ooze out of this performance.
