- The Steam Deck is an impressive handheld gaming PC, capable of running some of the latest and greatest games at playable framerates. But some genres are better suited for this device than others. Adam has been busy trying out over 20 RPGs on the Steam Deck to see just how well this hardware can run them. In this video he gives us some insights into how some of the most beloved role playing games play on the Steam Deck.

Steam deck is a backlog killer.
The sound for Persona 4 Golden will work if you change the compability to "Proton Experimental" in the properties of the game.
wow they already fixed it
Verified today!
Do cutscenes still have any issues?
@@nintendude794 No - this has been fixed. It doesn't even require the Experimental setting anymore, now the game just works out of the box.
Game would drop audio on anime cut scenes for me until I installed GE 7.20 newer 7.24 and 7.26 didn’t work for me. Note: It does take forever to launch the first time though.
Deck owner here. Persona 4 cutscenes work when using “Proton experimental” under compatibility
Great video. This is the genre I intend to focus on most while using the Steam Deck, so it's good to see that they work well.
Sometimes I feel like we forget the magic that is playing any game in your library portably like this, or that it's such an affordable device that people who could never experience games on good hardware before now have a good option for casual gaming
Gonna get one because of the games that are on pc but not on xbox, so many good and cool games with good performance is crazy. Plus EmuDeck gives it even more value
Great idea to use a single genre slate of different games, hope for more of these, thanks.
Tales of Arise is exactly the reason I'm getting a Deck. Thank you for the info!
The fact that FFXV run so well in the deck really suprised me, it's crazy that you can get a nearly locked 60fps with the Average preset!
I agree it is a feat to run it, but it was 600p and he did mention it didn't look good.
@@MadViking82 Also valid, so nowhere near perfect but in a pinch and bored in a weird area. Still good enough to play it if you wanted, so fair enough trade off I think
rly? everything will work with lowest settings and 720p or less.
because Gaben (the CEO of Valve)'s sons plays FFXV so that why it tooks priority. cause if his kids can't enjoy the things he makes why would the general masses would like it.
I agree with other commenters, trying out Proton-GE might smooth out some of the issues.
Also, I'm super hyped that Valve is working on a capped 40FPS+native refresh rate option. I can't wait to see tests like this with that available.
40fps mode would be truly fantastic. Is it confirmed the screen can actually run a dedicated 40hz?
@@poppys33d From what The Phawx has posted, the screen is capable. It required a custom EDID to set up the timings and clock rates to drive the panel appropriately, but it didn't appear to cause any issues, like strobing or smearing.
The issue for Valve is that loading an alternate file for Extended Display Identification Data forces the GPU driver to tear down and restart its monitor controls, just like plugging in a new monitor. That will cause quite a long screen blank on a running Steam Deck. That's unlike the present FPS caps that divide evenly into the panel's native 60FPS, where the game can draw 15 or 30 times a second, and the compositor can just double or quadruple them to get 60.
@@rhekman That's some great info, thanks you. It'll be interesting to see how the software progresses here. In many ways the Deck is a work in progress. Good thing it's so much fun as it is.
@@rhekman not that any reasonable person would die from waiting a few seconds until the display switches to 40hz. The only people I can imagine complaining about that should probably not even be taken into consideration by Valve.
@@lucascarracedo7421 smooth 40Fps seems visually like 60fps and save battery like 30fps
wow u tested a bunch of games that I ACTUALLY play or i'm interested in playing
very insightful tysm
Fantastic review. I like that you speak about settings and / or about quirks or control issues. Very informative video! Now I know, which games I can skip, which I can add to wishlist etc. :)
Great compilation! Thanks!
I think it was released after this video, but now there is an option for 40Hz (not only limit framerate, but change how the screen refresh) gaining both smoothness and battery life
This is painstaking work. Thanks man. RPGs are a good fit for portable play
Digital foundry has done some testing with games and they recommend using the built in 30fps cap if you’re going to play at 30fps. Apparently the frame times are better and it’s a much smoother experience in comparison to enabling it in-game.
nice! You might be interested in trying "Eastshade" on the deck. It runs perfectly, and at the DPI it just looks incredibly fabulously.
My order is going to become available sometime in the next month, according to the steam page. Really looking forward to it. I have a beastly PC and a PS4 Pro, but I'm still very much a handheld gamer at heart. Growing up, I've always played on my DS, PSP, 3DS and Vita. There's just something about it.
Heya, as far as small UI stuff goes, I've found on desktop that using RSR (AMD's driver level upscaling for 5000/6000 series GPUs) can actually help with that. Because you're rendering the game at a lower resolution initially, it actually makes the UI appear bigger! Which makes system wide FSR another win for the deck even beyond its performance gains.
The thing about the Deck I like is that it is Linux, so any bug or technical glitch will have an official or unofficial fix more than likely. I think for more technically inclined folks like the ones not afraid of switching drives, the sticks when they break, and playing with firmware/software.
The deck for those people will really be a bang for its buck I feel.
I saw a video of a person showing that you can Dock the Deck and actually improve performance when you upscale the game to 1080P, things like that show the potential of the device
I've been playing with FSR on the deck and I've yet to use my dock. It works great to gain frames, and can sit in for antialiasing as well on certain titles. I typically do NOT use antialiasing because I like sharp textures and images, but FSR can get rid of shimmering pixels as well.
Great run down man!
This is really informative thank you. Rpgs is my favorite genre
Hey what are your settings for Edge of Eternity? I tried it on Medium but could only hang out in the 30s range
Valve *needs* to add a "community covers" function/hub, just like we have artwork right now (they could tie it in!). Being about to set game covers from the community would fix so much and offer a wide range of variation.
Imagine being able to subscribe to a cover creator/collection and your library having matching game cover aesthetics! Would be a revelation!
Glad to see you finally got it!
More videos like this one would be nice while waiting for the queue to move.
Hey, is there any reason why you didn’t utilize the system level frame rate cap option?
If you're playing a game with proton and you find the video scenes are missing or have no sound, it's because Valve can't legally distribute the compression algorithms for them. You can get around this by using an unofficial version of proton like Glorious Eggroll.
This video and some others I've watched really have made me go like "That would actually be awesome to play on the Steam Deck". Absolutely can't wait until I can buy one! :D
Any chance for an updated Video soon? This is exactly the content I was looking for.
Those final fantasy games always look great, last remnant too. Nice vid
For me FFVIII Remastered runs great but if I try to load a save the Steam Deck throws an error and I have to force quit the game. Did you encounter this at all?
Great video thanks
Would love to see an update for these exact titles... simply to see how much patches have improved it!
Another option is is to lower the Steamdeck's hardware settings to cap at 50 FPS/50 Hz refresh (or a bit lower even depending on your preferences). This gives almost the same smoothness as 60FPS/60 Hz, but allows you to keep other graphical settings higher.
so, is this a work in progress compatibility issue with these games? or does SD not have good enough hardware to run these games?
I get mine on wednesday and this is exactly what I need! Thank you bro
Tales of Arise also plays extremely well and looks great on the Aya Neo, despite the Deck having generally better FPS in most games. Looks great on either handheld imo.
we want more videos like this...please :P
Thanks for this video! I have been considering jumping into Persona series and Monster Hunter games with the Steam Deck. I may get a few Yakuza games, they look like fun!
What controlls set up for Pathfinder Warth of the Righterous is good?
I wanna get the Trails of the Sky games on Steam Deck any pointers? I get my SD later today
You can use ProtonUp to install GE-Proton (Glorious Eggrolls custom fork) to get things like cutscenes and audio working in Persona4. Other noteworthy game/s affected by include the RE:Remakes.
The main reason being Valve avoiding redistributing Windows MediaFoundation codecs they aren't authorised to, they're working on getting around it by re-encoding all the affected media iirc.
Looking forward to more Deck coverage (:
Latest version of Proton, fixes the audio issue in Persona4 (:
what the name of 0:47 game is??
@@mrjean9376 Scarlet Nexus, it's covered at 10:43
@@mitthjarta5 ohh im sorry, i miss that part, thank you very much
As someone who only browses protondb, I notice that trouble playing pre-rendered cutscenes seems to be a recurring problem, not only with the Steam Deck but with any device running the Proton OS. There may be workarounds, such as booting games in GE or experimental mode, or installing extra plugins, but it probably works on a case-by-case basis.
@@pcworld I just pinged you on telegram per your direct message.
@@pcworld yes from what i could tell these issues are due to video codecs which are part of windows media foundation which Valve can't ship for legal reasons hopefully valve can convince devs to use some more cross-platform codecs
Did you try Proton GE on the games you have problems?
cool games for Steamdeck :) . What is the program you use to measure framerate ?
@@pcworld Oh I thought it was MSI Afterburner framerate monitor.
Great video, would love to see performance of action RPGs like path of exile, warframe, wolcen etc
want to try pillars of eternity on the steam deck, curious about the performance
Nice to see zodiac age run well. One of my favorite games ever will surely play it soon.
I read that Nocturne only runs at 30fps on pc, but when you played it, the deck displayed the fps at 60, what’s up with that?
Thanks. I am having issues with the Valve term of verified. Epic Fantasy 5 worked for a bit. Going back to it had issues with changing languages and controls no longer working. The biggest issue was that text was unreadable and no way to adjust. I think they need to set a standard on text size for verified. Again thanks.
Forgive my ignorance, I just got my Deck. Whenever capping the framerate is mentioned, do you mean doing it on the Steam Deck UI or in-game? And which one should I favor? Thanks in advance!
@@pcworld Thank you so much for the reply! I really appreciate you taking the time. :)
Why didn't you use FSR on games you scaled the resolution down?
Adam, great work !! Must have taken quite a bit of time to get these running and fiddling around with the settings to get a smooth experience going. You may be too young for this but this reminds me somehow of the Sega Game Gear in the 90s. That was too expensive and a luxury then, and for me this feels like a luxury now - but one I bet many will enjoy!
@@pcworld I never had either, only played on borrowed ones from friends. Keep up the great work on the show
Great video thank you. Just got a steam deck abd honestly blown away that i have a capable pc of playing AAA titles...irony is, i now don't know what to do with it or what games best to play on it and yes think RPGs which i love will be the best way to make use of its portability
For persona 4 try it with proton experimental or Proton GE.
So are those games not running as well a problem with the console or the developer not optimizing them well?
Loveeeee my Steam Deck also the game pass cloud app runs like a dream. I get almost 7 hours battery life on most games.
Another jrpg game for you to try on the deck that runs great is Tokyo Xanadu eX+
Also had massive issues with Chrono Cross but Proton experimental Bleeding edge fixed it.
When you say cloud app, do you get the app on steam deck? I thought you had to play it through Internet browser? Could you send me the link that you used please? My deck will come September so I've been just saving latest info
@@shan1333 Google it get official instructions from Microsoft.
It is an easy set up and you can add it as a none steam game.
This was the video I was looking for when the Steam Deck was announced
I would love to see a system software solution for the 720p issue it bugs me in Elden Ring
I am enjoying this type of review. Help me figure out what I need to buy for my new toy.
Did you say divinity 2 has cross save between PC and switch?
GREAT VIDEO
a game im interested in hearing about is the sword art online games do they play well if at all?
Alpha Protocol works on that device?
Also of note. Both college kings 1 and 2 were having the same issue of crashing at start up. Called steam. They had me re-download both games with the deck plugged into power. Which immediately fixed the problems with college kings 2. But college kings 1, I've tried multiple times and it just doesn't work.
PCWorld got the low tier job for performance on basic games vs switch. TY for the hustle.
RPGs was easily my biggest use case for my deck, and it's been great. Disco Elysium runs wonderfully, been sinking a ton of time into Planescape Torment.
Pretty much all the Soulsborne games run great, too. Bonus.
How's reading the tons of text in Disco and Planescape Torment?
@@stanbasov42 not bad, actually. They've both got size adjustments to at least some extent, and you're already holding it pretty close. I'm sure it won't be perfect for everyone, but it's certainly no Dead Rising 1 sub-titles.
That's what I'm doing all my Jrpgs and RPGs are going onto the deck.
Expect for big Gigabyte ones like Odyssey 100gb is too much. If the Rpg is more than roughly 50gb it probably wont go on my deck.
I bought the 64gb deck currently got a 256gb card in it and got 17 games installed. Got a 512gb microsd coming. Might grab another 512mictoSd later.
Shoutout to the syw mod for final fantasy 7. Makes the whole experience feel modern and runs fantastically on the deck.
I got a steam deck today and I would like to say to anyone on the edge of buying it but are put off by these videos, don't be fooled too much.
What you see on the display here is one thing, another thing is playing it yourself.
On the steam deck display itself, in real life, these games, even on low/medium settings - looks GREAT.
Yakuza Like a Dragon was such a nice surprise.. figured I would hate it since they changed the game so much but now it's probably my favorite Yakuza game :)
Thanks for the reminder on Last Remnant.. totally forgot about that one and never got around to finishing it.
@@pcworld Since you have Dragon Quest 11 on the list you might want to give Dragon Quest Builders 2 a spin.
It's a cute spinoff from the series with some minecraft/survival things thrown in.. Really hope they make a part 3 soon.
Why are all of the games listed super old? Thanks for the video!
How is Octopath Traveler better than the Switch version? Not being sarcastic I have a switch oled and steam deck and want to know which system to buy it on.
I’m so hyped to receiving my steamdeck
Planescape Torment runs really well. Didn't measure performance, but it being an old game, I doubt it has any issues - and saw none.
Two tweaks I did was bumping text size in game settings, and also remapping some of the default controls - although the latter wasn't really needed, just did it out of personal preference.
Does anyone know if you can play rts games on the deck? Ive never liked playing a rtx with anything but a mouse and keyboard.
As sad as it is , i still love the 2 lord of the fings rts games including the witch king dlc., finally my 3rd is "world in conflict" . Stjll awesome till this day
Check out NerdNest's UA-cam channel. He did a video showing his process of creating a decent control scheme for an RTS.
Once Guild Wars 2 becomes available on Steam I would love to see how it performs on the Steam Deck. I been playing GW2 since the first beta 😁
bruh that runs on a potato, the steam deck would have no issues at all
@@bradhaines3142 It finally moved to DX11 but GW2 is very CPU bound and I'm sure it would tax the Steam Decks CPU, especially when you have over 50 people at once doing an event 😊
@@-INFERNUS- Gw2 ran on my Surface Go 3. It was on the lowest settings on 50% res scaling at 720p, but it ran between 40 and 60 fps, even with world events with 100+ other people. Steam Deck will do fine and i can't wait until it's available.
@@Teddy_Bear312 oh then that's good news it should run fine on the lowest settings. I was thinking in my head setting's at max 🙂
@@-INFERNUS- I would guess outside of Lion's Arch and World Bosses, a mixture of medium/high would be perfectly playable.
i mostly been playing Final fantasy MMo, Fable 1 and Dragon quest echoes of an elusive age. They been sitting in my library of game's for so long i finally came around to play them on my Deck when i'm at work lol
You deserve a 1000 thumbs UP !
What you guys think? I'm looking to buy my first ever console. Torn between ps5 and steam deck. With ps5 I still need to buy tv or a good enough monitor so it seems like the steam deck is the way to go. But games I'm looking forward to is on the ps5 like wolverine or gow ragnarok. Do you think I should save to complete the ps5 setup or try steam deck where ps games are just starting to become available?
@@pcworld hey adam, thank you for the response, really appreciate it. I really don't care much on how big the screen is. Just want to get my hands on the games that I've always wanted to play. I've heard gow and spiderman runs fine on the deck. Dunno how true it is that TLOU will be coming to steam as well, but if it does then I might try steam deck hoping maybe gow ragnarok will come too soon. Plus, ps5 setup still is expensive.
I saw that you had wyldermyth. How does it play on the deck?
@@pcworld I appreciate the reply! Keep up the great content!
Why didnt you use FSR ?
Any fast paced combo fighting games
sorry if this is a super easy question, how did you get the last remnant on the steam deck?
@@pcworld ah all good, i saw it on the video and was very excited haha. Ill keep my eyes open.
The Last Remnant was on Steam years ago. Now the store page says it was removed "By request of the developer" so there's no telling why that is, but if you already owned it you can still download and play it.
how about maplestory on windows? (since i doubt it runs on steam os)
could you edit final fantasy games save file on the steam deck? specifically the mini games in ffx? lol
ha I know this isn't a rpg but can you see if the game Subotica is compatible or not. please
Great video! Thank you for giving us such a good gameplay sample of all those RPG games in a compilation, we love the format. Crazy idea here... The deck might be the worst platform for RTS games, but let's face it... We are all obsessed with good RTS games! Please do a video of games such as; Starcraft II, Company of Heroes 2, Age of empires IV, etc. on the Steamdeck. Basically, any RTS compilation that you can actually play on the Steamdeck, would be very much appreciated. And if the most recent releases of those games don't run properly, maybe their older counterparts will!?
@@pcworld You know we are just going to hook up a mouse on this thing, the second we start getting zerged, revenge! Super glad I found your chanel brother, game on!
Dropping the AO to half res in FF12 should iron out a lot of the drops. It's probably the most intensive setting in the game.
RE: Yakuza on Gamepass, can you stream the gamepass vs to the deck? Might actually get better framerate and battery life
can you mod fo4 on the steam deck?
So last I checked Dragon Quest XI S doesn't show as verified, but that may have changed. Either way, it runs fine. But man, what a beautiful game for the steam deck. For how nice it looks, it's also really light weight. And the steam deck has been the way I've gotten pretty far in it.
Me, a Grognard: "These aren't RPGs. These are shooters with swords."
Super stoked for blooodborne on steam deck
Awesome, I can install my Monster Hunter Worlds 2 now. Been testing non verified games and some games have run great and some not so much.
I have the OnexPlayer and I finally got around to Disco Elysium. I couldn't put my system down and I'm glad that my portable finally gave me the chance to beat it.
Instant sub when you said FF XII is one of your personal favorites. Deff in my top 5 favorite Final Fantasy games.
Honestly 12 to me was.. OK.
it just kinda fell short in terms of depth to me overall compared to the others I tried. And the weirdly uninvolved combat system was somewhat offputting really. I basically didn't have to DO anything once I had all my gambits set to heal/cure all status ailments and constantly reapply good buffs and attack weaknesses :/
It was such an odd game in the series for me overall.
I honestly think JRPGs is one of the most brutal tests for the Steam Deck since Japanese studios often don't stick to typical PC conventions when making a PC Port, often they come with all kinds of quirks, like fixed resolutions, limited amount of screen modes, framerates etc. I mean even looking at a new game like FFVII Remake, you can't actually choose between dynamic resolution and framerate limit, they are combined. So choosing 60fps will yield a very blurry image even if you force it to the new 40fps cap offered by the new Steam Deck firmware. The only way I could do it was to add a mod to remove dynamic resolution. Which is a shame, since it Dynamic Resolution isn't necessarily a bad feature. With that being said, I still find the Steam Deck absolutely BRILLIANT! :D
Yesterday i read somewhere, when you go down from multi cpu to only 3 cpu in use you should sometimes get much better performance. Have no steam deck to test it
Can you do this with mmo games or if you already have can someone link me
weird, i cant get my steam deck to launch edge of eternity. Can someone tell me why
I find the non-changeable 720p to be a thing on MANY games, and you'd think maybe Valve would have considered the resolution when factoring in just how many games can't do the full screen without small bars. Other than that the deck is pretty great. Just need that dual-boot support!
