You can hold the three dots button instead of the Steam button for the shortcuts. That makes adjusting brightness less awkward
Love my steam deck! Had it for a week and it sleeps in my bed now.

Another tip: "steam button" when referring to shortcuts, can be the button on either side, not just the left.
Thought the right one was called Quick Settings.

OMG thank you! I was so disappointed about being stuck w Steam+LeftStick for controlling brightness, who would ever manage to do that! Now I can too :)
Also I don't think you have to press and hold A with it as the video says to do, just holding it down by itself brings up the overlay, correct?

I agree and I'm 6'4" with fairly large hands. Still a monster. The plus side, is when I go back to my Switch, it feels nice and small, lol.
This advice is obvious. What you might not know is: 1.) you can stream from your laptop/desktop to your Deck, 2.) tilt controls are available for all games, 3.) games that say they are not playable on the Deck could be playable. Although sometimes you might have to set controls in the game's settings or the Deck itself for buttons to even register. Don't be shy, poke around and experiment with it.

Have you tried connecting a NAS drive? That way you could have a lot of your deck's games stored on your main computer. It would probably only work with low memory games and emulator roms depending on the speed of your local network. I have yet to see anyone attempt this on a SteamOS but it's been done on Windows computers and other versions of Linux.
You can add any game to your Steam library and use Remote Play to utilize your PC processing to play on the Deck but you want to have a solid network for the best experience. This is also how I play CoD and R6: Siege when I'm just having fun without having Windows installed on the Deck and it works pretty well. It definitely offloads a lot of processing power and extends the battery life substantially.
I found holding the 3 dots and toggling up and down with the joystick will adjust the brightness too.
your microSD is very very likely not "bricked" and just formatted in a strange bootable way. Look up CMD commands to do a full wipe and reformat on it and it should work again.

The thing about the 64gb deck is it seems that the compatibility folders for Windows games gets stored on the internal drive. I have like over 20gb of other on my internal drive and all of my games are installed on the micro SD card. I need to go back into desktop mode and see what's up with the storage space
That's something you can clean up thanks to linux symlinking. There will be an extensive Guide on that topic on our Channel soon!
64gb down to 32gb is crazy. I thought linux was light weight. Its basically the same size as windows 11. Glad i got a 512 and ill be either buying a new sd card or just using the one out of my onexplayer.
he was probably exaggerating and linux is lightweight - but only if the distribution hasn't added a lot of stuff to it. linux itself is just an os kernel. SteamOS comes with the main gaming mode and the kde desktop plus some other stuff that valve probably did under the hood.

Does steam deck have built in battery protector? My plan is use handheld but also use monitor and keyboard mouse to so going be plugged up alot on Charger.
You can also use the right 3-Dot button instead of the steam button to use these shortcuts

Another tip, specially if you get your SD card after you get the Steam Deck, do not insert the card to the Deck when in Desktop mode. Make sure you are in game mode then insert the micro SD, then format the SD card from the Steam menu - settings format SD card. Obviously don't do this if you already have data on your SD card, but for a new card it will be properly formatted for EXT 4.
I had an issue where the deck wouldn't format my SD card. If you have a Linux installation handy (Use rufus to put Ubuntu onto a thumb stick, you don't actually have to install it on your computer), you can use gParted to force a format on the SD card and turn it into a ext4 file system. Pop your SD card it in after formatting it, and the deck will automatically accept the card. Hopefully save some folks on a headache.
@@Reavan07 Yeah that issue is what I am referring to. It seems like if you insert the card while in desktop mode something is written to it, then it won't format in Game mode. you can remove the SD card, restart the deck, then format which seems to work. Also there is no need to boot to gpartd if you have windows, you can just use diskpart to clean the disk which also works.

Your sd card for sure isn't bricked. Just open up the kde partition manager and create a new file system on it. You probably just wrote a image file to it or something with etcher.

Instead of an SD card, what's stopping me from getting a portable SSD and hooking it up via USB when the steamdeck is docked? Wouldn't that be better? I can then plug it into my PC and play the same games I have installed without needing them to be saved in two places. I guess the micro SD is only for portability.
Some people pointed out that the moment you get the Deck, that you should factory reset it right at the beginning for some reason. It apparently fixes a lot of issues...?
Your microSD card wasn't bricked, it's just that Windows can't read the file system that SteamOS uses, ext4. You can reformat it in windows using diskpart to fix the issue if you prefer to use windows.

It’s not ridiculous. Not at all. In fact I’ve contacted valve as I have 2 bricked cards now and multiple reports from other people. Valve have confirmed to me back that it’s a problem with the deck itself and they are working on a patch. So to both of you morons who think you’d somehow be immune to this. You are wrong, and valve has confirmed it. So grow up and stop thinking you know more than anyone else.
@@MajorBen Have you tried following the advice I gave? I legit don't understand where all this animosity is coming from, I never called you any names or said anything was "ridiculous". All I did was try to offer a potential solution, as this is something I've had to do with both my Steam Deck SD card itself and various USB sticks I've used with various Linux systems, including the one I used to transfer ROMs to my Deck.
You literally outright said it wasn’t bricked. It’s rude. You’re just assuming that I was wrong instantly, I have a computer science degree. Just sometimes maybe sit back and think that people know more than you do.
@@MajorBen Try using Gparted to examine yhe structure or SDformatter 4.0 to give it a low level format. Others have said they were able to recover. Doesn't make sense that it could cause a hardware failure in the SD Card itself. Sure a format/partitioning error which would temporarily make it unreadable... but bricking usually implies complete hardware failure which this certainly doesn't seem to be. Try that low level format using SDformatter 4.0 and make a video showing recovery and then profit.

Is there a proton GE video on how to get this in the Steam Deck?
Remember Games with Certain Anti-Cheat engines will NOT work with SteamOS (Linux) you must install / Dual Boot Windows 10/11 otherwise if caught you will be banned. e.g Destiny 2
other times games will just not launch, but yeah definitely dont run destiny 2. easy anti cheat games like rust (if they dont have a linux port) will not work under proton
if you get the 64gb version just get a 512GB NVME SSD 2230 off internet, they are about $80 dollars and just reinstall steamOS, I also see that the SD card has a lot of benefits its also a really good idea investing in a 1tb one this black friday/ciber monday.

People stating that they are Bricking the sd cards probably are not bricking them. The sd card needs to be partitioned and then formatted. I partitioned mine in windows then formated in windows then finally used steam os formate tool in the settings. Everything worked. I'm almost 100% positive people are not partioning new drives. Windows will not see unpartioned drives in file explorer. And steam os will not formate unpartioned drives.
You are completely incorrect. The SD card is bricked. I know how to format and partition. If you genuinely think you can fix it then drop your discord or Skype and I will screen share and you can take a look since you seem to know better

Windows 10 on Deck has been a godsend for me, gamepass, launchers,etc, odd you had an issue with your SD card. Also, Fortnite is getting support? I thought epic was refusing to make this so. Runs great on windows though.

heroic launcher works as a great replacement for epic games launcher and it also lets you use proton to play windows games on steamos
You should contact Valve Customer Service and ask them to update Arch.
Tip: You can format SD cards.
In windows a lot of times there are issues formatting using their tools. Typically when this “bricking” happens to removable storage you can easily fix it in Linux using mkfs. Just make sure it’s formatted in something windows can see like fat or exfat.

If i get the deck I'd get the 64gb model, then install a 1tb ssd, and get a 1tb sd card later, and install Windows, Because i want to play games online. Or i might just save up a bit more for Aokzoe.
By bricking a micro sd card do you just mean you had to reformat it? I have 0 idea how you could fully brick an SD card to the point you can’t use it anymore.
I've done it before. Went to update it and it failed. Nothing I did, just hardware failure. I have two sd card readers and neither would recognize it so I could reformat it.

Just dual boot windows OS with steam OS... Then you can play MW etc... I really don't get why more people don't just do that then have all your games on the MicroSD.
I think the Samsung evo one of the best sd cards for the price only downside is they only make it up to 512gb not 1tb. I have a 256gb deck and a 512gb card and while its plenty i will probably get a 1tb in the future.

Why do every company suck so bad at auto brightness ? iOS and Apple seem to be the only one that I leave auto brightness on. Every other device, windows, android etc, I turn that feature off immediately
I’m starting to have buyers regrets. The stupid thing seems to change configuration settings on its own. I have had to factory reset the damn device 3 times now. It’s not the great creation some would have you believe. It’s buggy as hell and you will get frustrated if you try to do anything except add verified steam games. I’d return it if I could.

Feel your pain. Exact same thing happened to me. It’s not been a year and almost a month since I reserved mine. Finally gave up and just bought one from someone online to very close to the actual price point from Valve. They confirmed this past week that they’ve “resolved” a lot of their supply chain, but the best they can do is ensure that preorders will arrive sometime. This year. Sorry, that’s not good enough and I’m tired of waiting. Valve will not be getting my money, a private seller will. It’s a shame but it is what it is.
