Steam Deck: Week One (LOVING IT!)

- The Steam Deck is really disrupting the PC gaming world, and it's one of the most exciting products in recent memory. I've only had it for a couple of weeks so far, but in that first week I already took it on one of the key scenarios that a portable gaming console might excel in: travel! It's probably no surprise that taking AAA titles on the go is a big feat for the Steam Deck. With just one week down in my time with the machine, I've not done much extra on the Steam Deck so far -- except gaming in Steam OS, which has been everything I need it to be and more already. Here is week one with the Steam Deck!

I think almost across the board, the Steam Deck has gotten a lot of praise. It's not perfect yet, but when taken at its base level, it's doing way more than I might have expected it to.
Did you get yours yet? What are your thoughts on it so far?
Got mine in Q2. Love it!!
Mine will arrive tomorrow
Yep! Love it.
I didn't think I'd like it that much. I have a powerful gaming laptop, I mostly play at home. Thiught I was going to sell the deck o a friend.
I now don't play on my laptop.
loos cool, but cant match with GPD WIN MAX 2 6800U for many ponits.
Brilliant review. My personal experience is that it’s the best piece of tech I’ve ever owned. Having these games on me portably is something that couldn’t even have been imagined 3 or 4 years ago. Amazing concept and device.
I was on the fence with keeping my reservation, but your excitement for the Deck convinced me to pick it up. Been watching your reviews since the early Android days and they have always covered the features I wanted to know about.
Thanks for sharing your personal experience! Long time follower so as someone thinking of the steam deck seeing your perspective was very helpful
Haha as a Steam Deck owner (obsessed owner? haha) It is hilarious how when I come to watch a review on the Steam Deck, I ALWAYS come down to the comments and see the majority of comments are from people like me, who already own the Steam Deck and are just here to gush or talk with other people about their experience... This should tell people everything they need to know about how amazing the Steam Deck is. I haven't put the thing down since I got it haha... I am a Linux Storage/System Architect, and I have had so much fun tinkering with the deck in Desktop mode, that I probably have spent close to the same amount of time in there as I have gaming.
So fuckin jealous, man. Ordered mine day 1 and still waiting. Apparently UK 512GB queue is a little longer. So far it's just promised for Q3. 😵
Enjoy your Steam Deck, can't wait to join the rest of you.
I get my 64gb model today can't wait !!!!!!
@@harrydavey9884 sorry to hear dude that's rough
@@XGN93 i got the confirmation yesterday!!! So hyped hahaha
Nice 👍what version did u get and how does the controls feel
I had my steam deck for 2 months and I love this to death. I've abandoned my switch oled since I've gotten this. It's a beast and I can't believe I can enjoy AAA games right from my bed, I love it and it's power. Valve did such a incredible job with this, the emulation, steam os and desktop mode is definitely an excellent treasure trove of a device. Who knows what they will do next!!!!!
Can not wait I got my email today ! So hyped

Got my 512gb 2 weeks ago and it's absolutely amazing especially for when I'm traveling and can't lug around my desktop.
Super articulate dude with top quality vids. Already decided to get the Steam Deck but it was nice to watch this review to kind of consolidate my choice.
Awesome perspective on this device Josh!
I just got my deck, and I have to say I am enamored. I have a vast steam library already so I'm definitely the target audience. I appreciate how much the steam deck has already got me playing some of the games in my steam library that I never got around to playing. I love the pause and resume feature and how well optimized steam OS is as well. I am also really impressed with whatever magic they have implemented that makes SD card load times so quick. I will say I do experience some frame drops with games that are listed as somewhat compatible. However, I am pleased to say that FSR actually works wonders for these games and I have not played a game that I can't tweak to run the way I need it to so far.
Wonderful video and info. I'm getting my deck on Saturday, can't wait. I also bought some games on the Steam summer sale to get ready.
Thanks for the review!
It actually works the other way round too: I'm a big PC gamer from way back and my library numbers in the thousands. There’s no way I’m buying a Switch just so I can re-buy all of these games again. And also I’ll play the big AAA titles on my desktop. But a small portable device to play all of my hundreds of indie games on the move? The Deck is _perfect_ for that - and easily powerful enough that battery use is very low on just about all of them. It’s an excellent design for my needs.
It is still Beta
Yup, i agree... This is perfect for indie games and emulators On the go..
love it too! just stumbled upon your channel and I am liking your style man. subbed! keep it up!
my first video of you and i saw the nujabes art on your wall. I love you already
Great video. Hope to see more Steam Deck contents from you soon
I'm getting mine next week sometime -- it's currently "shipping soon," and I cannot wait
Im looking forward to getting mine. Sometime q3. Ive always wanted to play fo3 and nv Tale of two wastelands and so i think im gonma try getting it to run on steamdeck. Never used linux but looking forward to it.
I loved the way you explained it I work offshore and I need something small to go with my switch
I get mine tomorrow!!!! All the reviews I've seen everybody loves this! Can't wait!
I don't know what it is about this - whether it's your script, or the way you talk about it, but this was a really calming, in depth review. You don't go on too much about the console or are overhwlemingly positive or negative. This is a really concise and excellent review. Thanks buddy.
I got my deck back in May and I was so excited to jump into my Steam library backlog. Around the 2nd week of having my deck I discovered emulation and since the deck runs PS2 games flawlessly I've literally spent the last 2 months doing nothing but playing PS2 games (Persona 3 FES, Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry 3, etc). At the moment I have to say that the Deck is easily the greatest console ever made.
Is ape escape: pumped and primed fully playable?
Still waiting on Steam to tell me my pre-order for the 512GB version is ready. Good review. Straightforward. No distracting comments. Subbed. Maraming salamat pare! Galing ng review mo.
I might be getting this on my birthday which is next year. Really excited, it looks amazing
Loved the review
Loving mine so far!
Well I know what I'm buying myself for Christmas xD
Had mine a couple weeks now and damn if I don’t love it even more than I thought I would
Just got the email mine is ready for purchase!!! Cant stop watching these reviews.
I see tales of arise in your library!
Been playing it solely on my deck and honestly it's amazing i recommend you give it a go :)
30 hours in and it'll be the first game i complete on the deck
got my deck last week. Every bit worth the year long wait. Actually lives up to the hype
@Travis Smith what
This video came just in time as my steam deck comes today! Can't wait!! Time to finally work on my backlog of games
I've been specifically ordering games on Steam to play on the Deck. It's coming soon.
It's in Holland.
I just got mine last week and im amazed at how great it is.
Nice video. Can’t wait to get mine!
Got mine today. Installed a few games that I would likely play with a controller anyway, and so far it has been awesome. I am excited to see what I can do with this thing. I have a feeling this will help me actually crack open my massive Steam game backlog...
i have the same hope. the portability will let me play MANY more hours than i already do and relax in times that i need.
I've had mine for about 3 weeks now. I use this thing ALL the time. It is hands-down the coolest gadget I've ever purchased. I even tinkered with using it as a development machine briefly. Not seriously, but just to see if it could do it. Yup. I can ssh into my server, deploy code updates, you name it. I'm thoroughly impressed by it. Mass effect legendary edition is great on it, so is doom eternal, and so is hollow knight. Gotta try more games, but ME has a lot of content.
Shoutouts to the Nujabes poster. You're a real one for that.
That being said, I'm surprised you didn't touch up on the ability to have a docked mode. While that may not be your preferred method, I do think the ability to quickly and easily put your games on a bigger screen and use desktop peripherals is a luxury that's really only also afforded by the Switch.
almost sad nobody was mentioning it until i found your comment!
@@cosmicegg1283 a lot of time has passed brotha. I'm afraid that below a certain age he doesn't exist anymore. 😔😔😔
Well, all those handheld PCs (OneXPlayer, GPD, Aya and such) can do that too btw, but I still prefer the Deck overall.
Great review I’m also considering just using the Mac for work and then purchasing a steam deck for gaming
Ah! Mines sitting in the box on my table right now but I'm being a responsible person and waiting until I finish my work before I can open it up, lol.
I’m with you, I’m loving this thing! I was a bit hesitant to purchase it once I got my reserve notification as the hype had died down since I reserved it and I thought that I’d simply use it in a manner similar to my switch.
I couldn’t have been more wrong. This thing is now getting more use than my Xbox series x, mainly because of the titles available, the portability, and the fact that I can use it to catch up on my PS4 titles that I have in backlog.
Some of the functionality of the steam OS can still be a headache, and it sucks that more games that I live aren’t verified or playable, but I am a very happy camper for now.
The packaging and back pouch leaves a little to be desired, but overall, no complaints! I can’t wait for more games to become available!
I don't know how you can say that. I can't get any games to play on it.
@@jordanbrooke5393 It may take a little time to find your niche, but once you find it, you’ll be happy IMO. It took me about 2-3 weeks to really get going but once I did, there was no turning back.
I have my steam catalog, Xbox game pass, and some strong ps4 exclusives all in one place. I haven’t even touched emulation mode yet.
New Games are being verified everyday, just stick with it, trust me, there is something there.
“Wait for it, wait for it…”
I hope your right. They seem to be a lot of bugs at the moment. I will stick with it and hopefully I will get rewarded.
I have been loving the hell out of my Steam Deck since got it on the 6th. Been playing lots of Batman Origins and Elden Ring on it so far.
All I've done is play pixel art 2d games on my deck I wouldn't even touch them type of indie games if it wasn't for the deck
The real WOW moment for me was when I started up a game that was not optimized for the Steam Deck or use a controller, but I was able to run it, customize controls and play it. It’s crazy how this Linux based machine is able to run many older windows only titles that have issues in windows itself.
Edit: the trackpad is amazingly accurate and tactile. Very good replacement for those games that only use mouse for aiming.
Looks amazing g
one thing that’s pretty cool is if you already have a game installed on your pc, even if it’s not steam- you can use steam desktop to navigate to a smb folder on your pc and copy the installed folder onto the deck and add it to steam library as a nonsteam game. then you can use proton to run it and it so far has gotten good results. i run epic games and gog games besides steam
What's an smb folder? And do you know where I can find the steps on how to do this? Like online video or site
@@somedude9590 smb is using your local network (all devices connected to your router) to copy files between your pc's or macbook without needing a usb drive. your iphone or android can also copy files to and from your pc like this as well. just search "smb file transfer" on youtube
bruhhh this makes me wanna buy one😭 looks so dope id prefer this over the switch i think im gonna slide on one soon
I just got mine last Thursday and haven't been able to put it down. It helps that I'm on my first playthrough of Skyrim, which I haven't run into any issues with. Battery life is surprisingly good from my experience so far with (100% vanilla) Skyrim @ 40Hz/40fps and low graphics settings, being able to play around an hour and a half with 72% juice left over from a full charge. I do tinker a little but a lot less than the average enthusiast, and even before I limited the refresh rate and FPS, I didn't face any problems (albeit on Low settings). Now the next thing I want to try is a slightly modded Skyrim which would complete the experience for me.
This is flawless timing lol mine should be here today 🔥
how do they contact you when you are up just an email? I don’t want to miss it lol
@@jacobvans9285 They do that and they also give a popup on steam that doesn't close unless you check a box that you read that your steam deck is available.
@@jacobvans9285 Mine arrived a day early which was yesterday. In Steam once shipped, you can click your user name (top right) > check your account details > view purchase history > view shipment details > track package to get a full breakdown on your Deck's journey. Enjoy! (Minus that excruciating wait...)
i just got my purchase notification and secured it! now just waiting on shipping. the waiting is killing me
Been using mine religiously, and that's with new Monster Hunter Sunbreak on Switch releasing. it's with me every time I charge the car.
I loved my steam deck so much I bought a second one on ebay. it's my daily driver for 90% of the gaming I do, and revived much of my steam backlog of games.
I mean you can always get back at it in that queue and reserve another
What do you use the 2nd one for?

My Steam Deck arrives tomorrow!! I can't wait!
I have a vinyl sticker on mine She's so beautiful I had to put fancy clothes on her 😅
AHHHHH YOU'RE SO LUCKY! As soon as we hit Q3 my patience hit zero 😂 been waiting a year and since I first pre-ordered and I just want it in my hands now. Hope you enjoy it.
Typing this on my Steam Deck, because I'm also mostly using it as a desktop machine (bit too warm right now to fire up the ol' space heater). It's really good. Thanks to an app called Heroic, I've also been able to install games from EGS and GOG with relative ease (hardest part was to get artwork to show in the Steam interface for those games. Definitely a bit of jank here and there, but that's certainly also the case on Windows.
If you're thinking about getting in line for one, I'd recommend either the top tier (biggest storage, anti-glare screen) or the cheapest model (low storage means you'll be restricted in how many games you can slap on there without investing extra anyway in a good sd card, but if you're mostly in it for the indie games that might not be too much of an issue).
Well, I got the 256gb one and it's working fine! Don't turn away people from the 256gb one. 64gb is the shittiest out of the 3. It goes from worst to best, not talking shit about the 64, just sayin.
at first i was unsure about the steam dec but i have now decided to reserve one i put my reservation in yesterday im now just waiting for my console to become available
With a dongle or even the official dock coming out soon, hooking up a display, mouse, keyboard and using the SD as a micro linux machine will probably become popular among new Linux users. With the constant improvements, using a Deck as a user friendly first daily driver linux machine seems like it would help a lot of people get over the fear of linux, especially since they made it hard to destroy the OS by accident, so you can't pull a Linus.
I'm doing that right now. In my free time, I'm mostly just in a browser anyway (when not gaming) so it doesn't really matter which desktop OS I use.
As a Linux storage and systems architect, I am freaking in love with my Steam Deck. I spend just as much time tinkering away in Desktop mode as I do in gaming mode playing. I am freakin obsessed with this thing!!
I love my deck the same way I loved my T-Mobile G1. It's got its quirks on the software side and it's a bit chunky but I feel like I'm holding the future in my hands.
That G1 was a Dream! Root it, slap a thick battery on it and show it off!
I miss having a physically keyboard!
I have an extensive library on steam. A lot of the indie titles that I have kinda get brushed aside.. Larger AAA titles like Forza and Call of Duty take up my time on pc. Since I prefer to play those games at high frame rates and high speed internet connections, I'm really looking forward to the steam deck so that I can play games like cross code and shovel knight on the go. 😊
Love the Deck! It got me into wanting to play video games again. Idk lately having to sit in front of a computer to play video games kinda feels like a chore, especially after having to work 12 hours a day 6 days a week. Now I can play laying on my bed till I fall asleep! FYI Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen says “unsupported” but it’s been playing beautifully on the Deck. No issues at all after 56 hours of playing. I didn’t even have to mess with the Proton compatibility settings 😁
Couldn't agree more
I love my steam deck it makes me play games I'd never even consider playing
Great and informative video
Great vid!
I got the Ayn Odin, when you factor in game streaming, and size? Ya know.
The steam deck looks heavier then it is the weight is really distributed great I love mine I expected to sell it and get another handheld but I can't part with it for shit
I got my link to buy today. just here watching more recent reviews to see if its worth it. They lost me a bit when we were suppose to have this in february
That Nujabes painting behind you tho *Chefs Kiss*
The issue you were experiencing with RDR2 crashing until switching to Direct X 12 isn't a unique issue to the Steam Deck. I actually had the same exact issue and solution on my desktop when playing a few months back too.
I want to tell you that the Steam Deck plays well docked on my new Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 curved monitor. The resolution is still 720p but it scales so well and doesn't look bad at all! I thought at first there might be issues since the G8 is a 4k/240Hz monitor but nope! Some of the games I tried are Bayonetta 1, Ender Lilies, Hollowed Knight, Cup Head, RedOut, etc. I still play the more GPU intensive AAA games on my main PC that has a 3090 to get the full 4k/240Hz HDR maxed settings experience but it can also be enjoyable playing these games on the Steam Deck when its docked. 👍
That Nujabes Art in the back is FIRE
5 months in still love mine! Elden Ring Work so well
Finally got my Steam Deck 512gb last Tuesday. Now thinking how to keep this charged while on a 22 hour flight to the Phils.
The back buttons are sick!
Welcome to the Family 👊👊
Mine is coming in 4 months I’m so excited!
I got my 256gb deck about a week ago. It’s been great! I would suggest getting a 1tb sd card. I am convinced that the best value setup is the 64gb with a 1tb sd card. I don’t really notice any slow speeds with games loaded on it.
Other than that, I’ve done some battle net gaming and other windows games not compatible with SteamOS using Lutris on desktop mode. Once you run thru a setup you can add these games as a non steam game and launch them with eh SteamOS ui. Pretty nifty!
I was totally blown away at how well games run on the SD card. I have the SanDisk Ultra 512GB and sometimes I can't tell if the game im playing is on the SD card of on my 256G NVMe. It looks as though even if you install the game on the SD card, Valve has opted to still put the games shader cache on the NVMe which is a brilliant idea, it allows for zero stutter due to assets loading in etc. I am friggin obsessed with this thing!
if you need even more storage the framework 1tb expansion card is a pretty nice option if you want even more storage but don't want a drive flopping around
What 1tb sd card did you get because I'm still deciding on one for my 512 steam deck
You're absolutely right. Prime has insane deals on 1TB SDXCs at the moment. I ordered the 512GB Deck, but honestly I'm not sure if the price difference is worth it. Hopefully it'll age well.
@@mitcHELLOworld it's because it pre-caches the game assets into the DRAM, which is honestly genius.

I feel your pain, man. Been waiting 1 whole year in a few days. Absolutely devastating. I haven't anticipated a hardware launch since the Nintendo Wii.

Don't feel too bad for now doing an unboxing. There are already so many videos of other youtubers doing an unboxing. We can watch those.
You can actually map each trackpads to 12 additional inputs. So that's 24 inputs just from the trackpads alone.
I also found a pretty good anti-glare screen protector which I use on my 64gb Deck.
I upgraded my 64gb with a 1 tb 2230 I was shitting myself the whole time with the screws back in and nearly losing them but job done in end
@@Anon1370 what was the brand/model of drive you put in? I'm looking at 3 steam models, and leaning toward 64gb as well.
@@luxomoore6711 took the 1tb 2230 nvme out of the CalDigit Tuff Nano saw someone on reddit reccommend it. It was the only way I could find a 2230 that was brand new...other people might of had other options I didnt at the time limited resources in uk.
Doing it this way also had an advantage though because i could put the 64gb that came out of the steam deck back into the external enclosure....and use that as a os backup

Hey Josh, love the Nujabes poster in the background. What is your favourite Nujabes track?
Just got my email, can't wait
Mid tier for me too. My is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I’m a little annoyed with myself for not getting the low tier due to the ease of replacing the ssd but didn’t want to cancel my preorder and wait longer. Still trying to figure out what exactly the mid tier brings with its exclusive community bundle. Supposedly some virtual keyboards and wallpapers but which ones exactly? I have lots of stuff in my profile that came with various games over the years but haven’t been able to narrow down what of it came from my steam deck purchase.
Hey I'd be happy to just play some of them nostalgia games and leave the theatrical games to my home console as well as the multiplayer focused games I love. This is pretty awesome.

Where is that super cool lamp in the background from? 😍
I bought a plastic diffuser/ anti-fingerprint from amazon that came from the Netherlands, and it works great. ::edit:: also magnetic usb-c adapters made connecting and disconnecting from either the plug or the usb-c hub much easier.
Careful with the magnet cables they'll arch if they get near metal/silverware, can start big fires
Nah right angle usb c for the win can't be taking chances on that magnetic shit

Good experience with all verified games and each one works flawlessly. Games lacking the verified tag can be frustrating and crash taking you back to the Steam menu. Geforce Now seems to run more games in my library than the Steam Deck, I use the Steam Deck for games Geforce can't or won't support.
